Alex turned back over her shoulder, looking for Andraska. It hadn’t taken long to give her statement, and Alex had stuck to keeping the lies simple. She lived in Ne’haer, was taken from there by the man as payment for a debt. She hadn’t realized that they were squatting, and she had been used as a lookout for robberies. Threats against her mother, who still lived in Ne’haer, kept Alex from going to the Knights.

That was done, and Alex had been happy to get away from that many guards in a small space. It brought back memories of her almost going to the gallows when she first arrived in Andaris, and she couldn’t wait to leave the wretched city. Just till the end of this season, that’s it, she reminded herself. Just till the end of the season.

Idly, Alex wondered what Andraska wanted her to teach him. It obviously had to be something illegal- otherwise he could find an actual teacher somewhere else. He didn’t appear to care much about her squatting, though she was sure he’d care more if he knew her reason for being in Andaris. Killing was a line most people seemed to have issues crossing, though then again Andraska seemed to enjoy threatening her.

“So, what’s the deal then? What did you want? It’s obviously something... shady, to say the least, or something you don’t want getting back to your superiors.”

She paused for a moment. The way he had handled things, the other guards deferring to him.

His garb didn’t set him apart, so it was something else. Shrugging, Alex cast off the thought for the moment, though she resolved to keep a closer eye on him. There was something he wasn’t telling her, something important.

Written statements were always the worst part of his job. He asked the standard questions, filling in reports and writing details of the perceived situation, adding in the few descriptions of the man who got away and just exactly what had happened. It took the standard amount of time, but it gave Alex a chance to flesh out her lies. As he wrote down her words, he occasionally glanced up, trying to see if he could spot any ticks she might have that would give her away.

He had to admit, she was a good liar, “Alright, that's it,” he announced, throwing the pen down on his desk and rising to his full height. He stretched, arching his back as his arms reached for the sky, “Now, time for the fun part.”

Since they had finished his part of the deal, Alex seemed to be regarding him closely, and he smirked, “Always so cautious,” he remarked, glancing around as they headed down the street. When no knights came waltzing around the corner, he answered her question, “Shady?” he grinned, “So quick to judge a man who has just helped you. Hmm,” he rolled his shoulders, the burden of his leather armor reminding heavier now, as if to remind him he were the law. That perhaps he shouldn't be coercing with someone so clearly a criminal. In that way, the girl was right, but the less she knew the better, “It's not quite...” How should he put this? “Bad, so much as... frowned upon?”

He shrugged, “Let's just say someone took someone and I am going to take it back.” That someone being the king, and the noble houses, of course, and the something being the gold laden body of his deceased brother in law. He held up a finger, green eyes flashing towards her, “And before you say steal it, I'm simply retrieving it. It belongs to me and mine in the first place. I promised I'd get it back, and I never break promises.”

Andras rounded a corned, motioning her to follow, “So here's how it's gonna go,” People paid little mind as they passed, “No one is going to find out, because I'm not going to be in Andaris. I need you to prepare me, because where I'll go... I'm... a bit more likely to be recognized.”

C'mon. Venora faces weren't exactly easy to forget, “And look at you, coming up with lies on the spot. I need that sort of... expertise. Earlier you mentioned posing as the help to infiltrate. What is the success rate of that?”

Alex didn’t reply to his comment. She had never really considered herself that cautious, but with regards to this…unknown, she decided to take her time. To be slow. Perhaps she was being a tad overly paranoid, but better that than dead, in her mind.

“Frowned upon? If someone took something from you, you’re a guard. Just go arrest them or something.” Alex shook her head as if it were simple. He never broke promises? That was good to know, though for all she knew he was lying. She had been about to say steal, but his explanation stalled her. She hadn’t seen enough of him to know what kind of person she was, and she wasn’t about to leap headlong into trusting anyone right now, especially a guard.

“Oh… Unless the other guards took it? Or a commander?” She eyed him, trying to gauge her reaction.

His next words made more sense- it wasn’t in Andaris. His status and ability to use the law would be limited elsewhere, and she eyed him again. Where was he going?

She fervently hoped it wasn’t Etzos. That was the last thing she needed.

“Another lie. I’ve done similar things, though it helps if you make up a backstory to go along with it, and disguise is more than half the battle. A bad lie can be covered up with the right attitude and way you carry yourself.”

“So, disguises. Those are easy. There are a couple of major things you can do to change your appearance without actually changing anything. Your gait, for example, is a dead giveaway,” she said. She was more comfortable with this when she ignored the fact that she was talking to a guard. She wasn’t about to give away all her secrets, but being a Yludih helped a lot. “You walk like a guard; straight, confident steps with wide shoulders. You should practice rolling your shoulders in, almost hunching over. Try to get a very slight irregularity to your steps, or if that’s too hard, use a pebble in a shoe. It’ll keep you walking oddly, and make you less likely to be noticed.”

These were all tips one could get from anyone even remotely skilled at disguise, so Alex didn’t feel like she was giving away trade secrets.

“Watch.”

Alex strode ahead a few steps and altered her gait. At the same time, she shifted her hips so they rolled enticingly and pulled her hair back. Her shoulders were pulled back so her chest stuck out, and Alex appeared to be a confident younge woman who reveled in her sexuality.

Another half a dozen steps and Alex shifted into an old woman. Her back hunched over slightly and her shoulders rounded her upper back. Her neck stuck forward a little further, and Alex began to walk as if her knees were aching. Her speed hardly changed, but it appeared she was moving far more gingerly and carefully than she had been moments earlier. Were it not for her clothes, no one who had seen the woman from moments earlier would be able to connect the two.

Alex dopped the disguise and slowed her pace so she was beside Andraska.

“See?”

So, he walked like a guard.

One could argue he walked like a noble – confident and tall, but he nodded at her observation, “Interesting.” He had noticed commoners doing... different things, but was never quite good at putting his finger on it. As she instructed him about his shoulders, he threw them forward, lowing his center of gravity and pushing out his knees. It felt uncommon, a bit uncomfortable, and he couldn't help the smile that started tugging at his lips.

Alex continued her demonstration, mentioning a pebble, which seemed ingenious to the novice. It was definitely a good solution, and he straightened when she demonstrated two personas – a young woman in her sexual prime, and an older, more delicate matron. The red head seemed to transform in front of his eyes and he had to give her credit.

He clapped, smiling in appraisal, “I do. You're very good. You know of Tristan Venora? He's a playwright, had something playing last season. If you ever want to be an actress, you should get in touch with him.” Learning some of the ways people could change them would allow him to know what to look for in future investigations, but for the moment, he was enjoying the lesson, “Alright, let me try.”

He rolled his shoulders, bouncing on his toes as if he could shake out the essence of himself from his fingertips. Who am I? According to Alex, he needed a backstory, and idea of who he wanted to play. He pondered over this for a moment, changing his breathing when the image of a gruff sailor pushed into his mind. He thought of how they walked, physically trying to fit the mold in his mind. He squinted his eyes in a hardened expression, squared his shoulders and pushed them forward like bracing against an imaginary wind. He took a footstep, but not liking the way it felt, made it heavier – to imitate a man used to solidifying his steps, as if commanding the ground to hold him. Unlike the more precise, graceful and confident movements he usually took, Andráska thrust a hand greedily into his pocket and yanked out a cigarette, and then started aggressively patting his pockets. He looked around and then let his eyes fall on Alex, suspiciously, “Oi, lass!” he said loudly, his jaw jutting out. He was imagining all the men at the taverns, how they addressed women. How they spoke confidentially, but angrily, almost like an annoyed yell, “Ya gotta lig't?”

He stared at her face for a moment before breaking out into a boyish grin, the facade shattering like glass, “I don't know,” he began, “Feels silly,” he grinned, his playful nature coming out along with an embarrassed redness to his cheeks, “Kinda fun, though.”

Alex cocked her head at the name- a noble. Maybe he would know of her target, Evelyn Andaris, or know someone who would.

"I don't know if I'd ever want to do that. Standing up in front of all those people... I usually prefer to hide, not draw attention to myself. I appreciate the information, though." She sounded slightly regretful, though Alex would never want to act. Even a disguise that brought attention to herself wasn't designed to keep the attention fixated on her, and that was a significant difference. Plus, standing up in front of all those people...

Alex supressed a shiver. No thank you, she thought.

She watched, entertained, as Andraska adopted a different pose. It was decent, though rough. His frame adjusted itself well, but the footstep was off. She knew what he was going for, but it was somehow too.... Alex didn't know what exactly was off about it, but it seemed too forced. She let out a small chuckle at his over exaggerated accent, a grin spreading across her face.

His face fell out as he began to laugh and Alex joined him. He had some talent, though it would be long before he was at her level.

"That, that was good. It feels odd at first, but you'll get used to it." This part was pure speculation. Alex, from the time she was born, had always been playing in a disguise. To a Yludih, the change in pacing or posture was as natural as breathing, and far too useful to be scoffed at. "I think you need to observe more. It's good enough to pass if no one is looking at you, or for you, but the moment someone specifically chooses you to examine, it'll fall apart. I think it boils down mostly to your gait, for that disguise anyway. It seems too...forced, which is odd considering the steps need to be forced, but I can tell its fake. I'd advise watching those who you wish to mimic. By observing them you can notice small patterns that help sell the role."

She cast an eye around the street, looking for an example. "Like there. See that woman?" She pointed out a small woman with bright red hands clutching a basket of freshly laundered clothing. "Notice how she ducks and darts around people, but her basket always stays on the street side of her body? She's a real laundress- first, her hands are red and raw, and second, she knows that all it takes is one chamberpot to ruin her day. She'd rather take it on the head or shoulder rather than in the basket with her livelihood."

She looked back to Andraska. "That kind of thing isn't obvious to those who first try to disguise themselves, and will make them stand out to anyone who knows what to look for. See if you can notice anything from the people we pass that might give away someone trying to pass as one of them."

Her little speech done, she walked next to Andraska for a few bits before turning to him once more.

"So, anything else you need to know?"

“Ah, well, luckily I still have some time to get it right.”

After their laughter had died and Alex began leading them, her lesson continuing, he glanced up to allow his eyes to follow where she pointed. The way a woman moved, holding her basket away from her... it was interesting. He hummed in acknowledgment, looking for his own details. He hadn't noticed these things because, well.... he never had to. Andráska was high born, mingling with common folk because it was fun. He never paid much attention as to why they did things, only that they were different.

She asked if there was anything else he needed to know.

“Plenty.”

The cigarette in his hand was suddenly remembered and he pulled out a match from his back pocket. He struck it, watched the light dance before inhaling the flame into the tip of his treat. He grew quiet for a moment. He pondered over her question to give specifics, but instead of answering, pointed to a fat man waddling down the street, “That man.... Rich. Has too many rings on his fingers otherwise. Thinks he something special, untouchable.” The man in question was looking around for someone, a little impatiently. He pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket, dabbing at the sweat of his neck. “He's...nervous.”

Why?

Andráska's brows furrowed and he watched another, much thinner man stroll up. This man kept his eyes straight a head and had something in his hand. A coin purse, “Hold on,” he whispered, taking a quick draw on the tobacco, “I know him.”

The smaller man. When he lifted his face, the collar of his coat pressed down, revealing his profile. “He beats his wife,” Andras rushed, the memory coming back. At the time, the noble had pulled his wife off the street and gave her refuge in Sabbaisant, threatening the man if he used her family's money. According to the coin purse in his hands, he had decided not to listen.

A dark shadow lowered itself upon Andráska's features, and he glanced at Alex, debating whether or not to include her, “You know how to fight?” expelling a large plum of smoke above their heads, Andras turned his body away so as to not be recognized, and nodded towards the thin man, "Follow him, I'll give you gold." Wasn't that the quickest way to hire a criminal? Throw money at them? "I'll meet up with you, but if he sees me, he'll run. Do you understand?" Finally a faint grin, "It's time to fulfill a promise I made."

Alex watched, entertained, as Andraska pointed the man out. She nodded along- he had an eye for those things, when he was looking. She got the impression he didn't care enough to do it on a regular basis.

Somehow, however, he didn't talk about anything that would have been useful for a disguise. He was more...dissecting the man. Breaking down his actions. She supposed it was his training, his work as a Knight, that was colouring his detections.

When he said he knew the man, Alex furrowed her brow. He knew him? Was this some setup? For what, she had no idea, but the tone of his voice gave her pause. She watched as he did, noticing the purse that was passed between them. Alex knew not what it meant, but as she turned to Andraska, she could tell he did.

The shadows that crossed his face left little room for confusion. Whatever his relationship, it hadn't ended well with the men.

"Y-yes?" Alex said cautiously. She never was a fan of fighting, but if she needed to...

"Fair enough. Why not." After all, she need not actually fight. A stray foot tripping someone might be enough. The grin that spread across his face was infectious, and Alex felt it sweep across hers. The gold wasn't really that important, but the chance of having something actually decent to hold over the guard? That was worth far more.

Teeth bared, Alex prepared to follow his lead.

Andras honed in on the men before him, more concerned with the skinny one than than the fat merchant and then cursed under his breath. Of course he couldn't have Alex fight. With her arm injury, she was in no condition to, and he hesitated. Like a cat honing on prey, his green eyes leveled on the two, and he tapped her on the shoulder, “Never mind. Change of tactics. Follow me,” he said nothing else, fading into the passing group of peasants, ducking his head and mingling with the crowd. He used a man about his size for cover, falling into step beside him, eyes briefly flickering downwards to sync up their footsteps. He might not have been able to imitate the man's mannerisms, but he used Alex's lesson to work on imitating pace. He hoped the guilty party wouldn't see him, that his plain colored clothing – even if it was leather armor – would be able to fit in.

The noble lifted his eyes, ducking behind the cover of an alley wall, and reached out to grab Alex and pull her beside him, “Having fun yet?” he asked, a slight smirk playing on his lips as he used his height to his advantage. From the shadows he could scout above the heads of the others, and he noticed the target approaching. The coin purse was no longer in his hand, and he looked more relieved. Sweat still decorated his brow and in the chilly weather, he shivered. From relief or nerves, Andras couldn't tell.

He had to gauge this right, and with luck, watched him walk along the side of street they were hidden on. Andras slowly began to count, gauging distance and how many tics it took for the man to walk it. He disappeared back into the alley, pressing his back against the stone wall, and motioned for Alex to move deeper into the shadows. He began his counting under his breath.

'One, two, three, four... Andras pushed himself sharply from the wall at last, spinning out of the alley way and came face to face with his old friend.

“Zachary!” Andras beamed as the man's eyes widened in horror, and the noble slung his arm around the man's neck, pulling him close and yanking him into the grimy darkness. His arm was tight around his victim's collar, and to an onlooker, it might have looked like a friendly embrace between two old pals. Andras leaned close, his voice cheerful with an unmistakable edge, “How's the nose?”

In their last engagement, Andras has shattered the cartilage, twisting the site of pain until the man cried. Now, he felt less compassion, seeing the man openly go against his order. All he had to do was not touch the money – money that very clearly didn't belong to him. “I want you to meet a friend of mine,” Andras held out a hand, putting Alex on display, “Isn't she lovely? The funniest thing just happened to us. We were out on a stroll, and I could almost swear I saw you doing something very unfortunate.”

Andras finally shoved the abuser away from him, watching as his body stumbled backwards and smacked into rotting barrels, and he turned his attention to the red head, “You've put me in quite the predicament, Zachary,” he sighed, stopping in the center of the alley to stop the man from running, “Tell me, Alex darling, what would you do with someone who broke your trust? Who spits your mercy back in your face?”

Andras began cracking his knuckles, the grim shadow still cast over his eyes like a curse. He had remembered his promise. He had vowed that if the man went against his orders, death would be his blessing. He was already steeling himself mentally for the beating he was about to give the man, thinking of the battered wife and child he had pulled from the streets and sheltered. He had seen the destruction – the cruelty displayed by such a person, “Does that type of man deserve punishment?”

He stared blankly at Zachary when he asked this, turning his head only slightly in the girl's direction. Despite the anger, the dark side of him that wanted to claim him in this moment, he craned an ear. Would she try to convince him otherwise? Would he want her to?

Alex nodded- whatever the change was, she approved. She pulled her cloak tighter around herself and ducked into the alley behind Andraska. She noted his steps, and followed the line of sight to where the men were.

Smart

She was impressed. Though he didn't have much skill, he had great instincts, probably helped by his career thus far. Instinct was something far harder to teach than skill, and she felt a stab of worry for what he would get up to when she left. How many people would be caught because of her lessons?

She wasn't looking when the hand snapped out and grabbed her, but she didn't resist. Alex didn't bother responding to his question- she was pretty sure it was rhetorical. Flat against the wall, she looked over at the Knight who was busy peering out of the alley conspicuously.

She slapped a hand on her forehead. This man... Just after she had been thinking about all his talent and instincts...

Everyone who passed by the mouth of the alley noticed the pair lurking in the shadows, though hopefully the sight of Andraska's guard uniform would be enough to dissuade any bystanders from being involved.

A sigh escaped her lips. She hated this... sloppiness. It had too many ways for things to go wrong. Then again, she wasn't used to working with a guard. Almost without thought, she shifted into Valyeria, the hood hiding the most obvious of the features.

She made a note of how Andraska moved, subtly hauling the fat man into the alley. It was something she'd keep in mind, though it required someone far taller than herself to pull off. Perhaps she could do it with an arm around the waist? No, Valyeria decided, she didn't have the strength to do what he had just done.

Valyeria nodded her head quietly to the man who looked at her with fear evident across his face. She smiled ferally as he caught sight of her eyes and flinched- the all black orbs were unnerving, to say the least. She watched as he pushed the man, trying to piece things together. The two had obviously met before- otherwise, Andraska wouldn't have known his name. It must have had something to do with the purse being handed off. Something Andraska had taken personally.

When Andraska finally spoke to her, Valyeria didn't look at him. She kept her gaze on the fat man, who looked as if he were about to wet his trousers. Andras began cracking his knuckles loudly before Valyeria answered.

"Well Andras dear, it seems to me that one bad turn deserves another. He broke your trust...it's too bad there's not a trust bone in the body...Perhaps a leg bone will suffice? Or maybe a rib or two?" She let her voice become light and sweet as if they were talking about their favorite dessert. She let out a quiet, lilting laugh and cocked her head.

"Of course, I could always find something less... Obvious. Did you know there is a species of frog that lives in Rhakros who's skin secretions can cause your muscles to contract? That in itself isn't anything spectacular, but do you know what happens if you inject that on either side of someone's arm?The muscles rip themselves from the bone."

She laughed again, falling into the role easily. The guard's pet Avriel. The sadist. This was a disguise she could handle. This was one she could excel at.

"Well? What do you think, my love? What should we do?" At long last she turned her gaze to Andras, forgetting for a moment who, and more importantly, what she was.

Andras' attention was focused on the male, that when he turned to face the now Avriel, his eyes widened. He had to steel his mind and remind himself of the target present, to not react. He didn't want his victim to think he wasn't in control of the situation. Forcing a smile, that must have look strained from anger at the man, and hopefully, not because the woman behind him had been a human moments ago. What... what was the name of the people who could shape shift?

He cleared his throat, “Tell me, Zach, do you like your ribs?” He said this mostly to intimidate the man, and in fact, when she talked about the poison that made your muscles rip itself away from bone... even he was partially unsettled. Smiling... smiling helped.

“I had no idea. Interesting.” Andras grabbed the man's shoulders, causing him to jump, and tightened his grip to settle him into place, “The more you know,” he shrugged, sighing wistfully. “I'm a little low on resources at the moment, soooo...” He glanced towards the alley opening. No interest.

Andráska pulled back and threw his elbow towards the side of the man's skull, angling the hit. The man dropped to the ground, unconscious, and Andras grabbed at his arm to make sure he didn't fall too hard. The man was a thief and an abuser, but he didn't want him permanently damaged. He released him, and once his body settled, looked at the Avriel, “What is this?”

He shook his head, “You're...” Was this real? “Is this why you're so good at disguise?” Oh, he felt so stupid, and he glanced between the two figures, pinching the bridge of his nose, groaning, “Magic or Yludih? Can you change back?” He hadn't even notice her shift. That was how fluid it was. Man, he felt like such an idiot.
