A Hunting Trip

Trial 17 of Cylus, 717
"I still don't know why I'm here." Navik sighed, scratching the ground with a stick. The fire in the Hunters' Fire Pit the only source of light. "It's not like I can hunt."

"You can hunt." came the answer, short, as always, but spoken with such a soft voice that Navik doubted his father was angry. "You might not hunt well, but you can hunt."

"Yes, well." Navik rolled his eyes, smiling. "This doesn't change things."

"The city needs the food, Navik. We can provide, and we should."

The scratching continued, as Navik frowned, refusing to look at his father. He kept drawing shapes in the ground, listen to the sound of the fire and the chatting of the ones who were gathered around the pit. He didn't really mind hunting with his father, even if he truly wasn't good at it. What was bothering him was that they wouldn't be hunting alone. His father never hunted alone on Cylus if he could avoid it, saying it was too dangerous. So he liked to stay at the Hunters' Pit, talk to others and sometimes schedule huntings together. Only this time he wanted to bring his son along with them. The scratching intensified, as the anxiety built up inside him. Hunts always brought up instincts and memories he would rather forget, and to have another one see him in this raw state was enervating. What if he ended up loosing control, yet again? Navik shuddered when he felt a heavy hand on his shoulder.

"I know it bothers you, but you will do fine. It's a chance to learn. And this hunter is a nice person."

"Everyone is nice to you." he whispered under his breath, but his father didn't - or pretended he didn't - hear, and Navik grew quiet again. There wasn't really much he could do, except to wait for this other hunter to join them and hope that his complete lack of skills with a weapon didn't ruin everything.

"You will soon find out that cooperation can make things easier, son. Even if it doesn't feel like it." his father squeezed his shoulder lightly, before removing his hand. "She is here."

Navik sighed, dropping the stick and taking his bow before finally rising up, wings trembling almost involuntarily behind him.

A Hunting Trip

17th Cylus 717

Vega had agreed to go on a hunt with some of the locals and she had done so with pleasure. It was the way this place worked, you gave and you got back and that was more than good as far as the young halfbreed was concerned. So, she made her way to the firepit and she had come prepared. The woman who approached was tall, six foot in height with long red hair down her back. It wasn't neat or nicely styled, it was a mass of curls which would fall in her face had she not worn a hairband to hold it back. She was dressed for the weather with a thick red dress beneath which she wore trousers ~ the thick stockings and socks were hidden in her high boots which were lined and flat. Over the dress she wore a coat with a hood, which was pulled up and she had a hat, gloves and a scarf. Perhaps more immediately relevant was the longsword strapped to her waist and the shortbow at her back.

As she stepped closer, the first thing that Vega noticed about the man poking at the floor with a stick was that he, and the other one with him were short. This place was filled with short folk, she deduced and she smiled. As she stepped forward, she couldn't miss the wings, but she smiled and offered her hand to them both, his father first, then the him. "Ibiti sarkin. Vega ies srer sọ eo. Miu tìte ies tä laiyara ke’u" her Xanthea was not great, she knew, but she was making an effort to learn the language of that half of her heritage. As she drew close enough that it was able to be made out, Vega's eyes could be seen to be a vivid purple colour with flecks of orange in them. She didn't look at all Sev'ryn, between the height, the eyes and the hair.

"My Xanthea is not so good. I am learning, though." She gave a grin to them both and lifted her shoulder as the warmth from the fire pit hit her; she smiled. "If we're going to work together, we might want to know each other's skills, strengths and weaknesses on the hunt? I'm better with a sword than a bow, but I'm alright with both, at best. I can survive well in the wilderness, I guess, and I hunt." She considered if there was anything else that she should tell them and her eyes shifted colour as she looked from one to the other. The gaze she turned on them was deep green by the time she'd finished speaking. Then, she waited to see what they said. It had to be said, Vega didn't ignore his wings, it wasn't her way but equally, they were as interesting to her as any other part of him, and he was as interesting as his companion. So she looked at them both, took in all of them and waited to hear their names with a slight smile.

A Hunting Trip

While Navik considered himself to be a tall man among his people, he had seen taller men and women, and perhaps that was the only reason that he wasn't surprised by the height of the woman that approached them. What impressed him, though, was that her hair seemed made of flames, exactly like Naureey's, except more wild, seemed to be barely contained by the hairband she used. Along with the weapons she carried, the woman seemed like a true daughter of the woods, ready for the hunt. It was impressive, in a way, and Navik once again wondered why he was needed at all. Surely his father and the woman would do just fine. As she introduced himself, though, Navik noticed she must not have been raised in Desnind, the words put together in a strange order, but still understandable. It would explain how he never noticed her before. Navik accepted her offered hand.

"Sev cae'rouj ke’u awujo: Ibiti sarkin. Miu srer ies Vega. Sev'm tìte tä laiyara ke’u." he corrected, frowning as he noticed the color of her eyes. They seemed strange, coloured in purple and orange. She was surely not a Sev'ryn.

"Navik!" his father voice interrupted his thoughts, his tone severe, and Navik looked at him, frowning.

"Dẹọdọ?"

"Aceh'ar bou'eri ikọkọ!"

It was only then he noticed that he had corrected her without even introducing himself. Navik blushed, releasing her hand, torn between feeling embarrassed and feeling annoyed with his father.

"Sev'm kïnä. Sev tireaioang snẹyä tä ise agbese." he offered. "Sev'm Navik."

Then Vega began to talk in Common, and at first Navik tried to follow what was being said. The words were being spoken too fast, though, and he kept missing one or another, until the point he simply gave up, looking at his father and waiting for the man to translate it to him.

"I'm Ti'wang." his father introduced himself, smiling. His Common wasn't perfect, spoken slowly, and Navik could follow his words way easier."Do not worry about Xanthea. Navik cannot speak Common correctly as well."

"I understand you." Navik scowled at his father, the words weird in his tongue as he tried to talk in Common as well. His father shook his head, before quickly telling him what Vega had said.

"I'm better with traps and tracks than weapons. In fact, this is one of the reasons I ask you to come along." Ti'wang smiled again. "However, my son is not very good at many things related to hunting, so I ask you have patience with him."

"Sämu ïsẹ" Navik half whispered to his father. He was about to say something else to the hunter, but Vega's eyes distracted him. Had they changed colours? He was sure it had been purple, and not green. His frown deepened. "You eyes are weird."

"Navik!"

"I mean..." he blushed, noticing he probably said something very wrong. "Lokacin. Sorry." he sighed in frustration. The hunt was going to be hard enough already, and he could barely talk with the woman. There was no way things would go smoothly. He hoped he at least hadn't offended her.

"I wanted to track and hunt some Icraphern." Ti'wang spoke again, and Navik was grateful for the distraction. "If that is alright with you."

A Hunting Trip

Shaking the hand of the younger one, Vega heard his words which corrected what she said and she nodded, first with a frown as she worked out the differences between what he said and what she did and then she smiled. However, there was a communication between the two which Vega half understood and she shook her head, raising her hand in a gesture of peace. To the older man, she smiled and said in a very respectful tone, "Syayvi, sev snẹyä iberea. Sev tireaioang iberea idakẹjẹ sev ailewu dẹọdọ sev did takip tọjẹ", before turning to Navik as her smile turned to a grin. "Ọfïïsï ke’u, yïyän thank you, teacher."

The elder one, who turned out to be the younger one's father thereby explaining quite a lot to Vega was called Ti'wang and the younger one Navik. Vega repeated both names and smiled at them. When Ti'wang explained that Navik was not good with Common, Vega nodded and spoke to Navik directly. "Eyawr ke’u ärïwọ eo, sev ärïwọ ke’u? Perhaps we could teach each other?" she spoke the Common as carefully as the Xanthea from here on out, knowing that he did understand it, just not as well as her. Hopefully, he would do the same with Xanthea and they could learn.

It had to be said, Vega was rather surprised at how critical of his son Ti'wang was; she had been raised by her father and he would never speak in such a way about her to a stranger. She didn't say anything, however, it wasn't her business. When Ti'wang said that Navik wasn't good at much of anything to do with hunting she shook her head at his request for patience. "As long as we are all working together, that's all that matters to me."

At Navik's comment about her eyes though, Vega let out a genuine laugh and shook her head at his apology, waving it away with her hand. "Different. Lokacin is different? You said ke’ua ligok awt dẹkun. Both are true. Different and weird." She was not in the least offended, quite obviously. "I am.. snumìna ceh'aj?, is that right? Mixed blood. My mother was Sev'ryn. My father, Biqaj. So, my eyes change colour, my ears are" Vega considered, this was hard in a mixture of the two languages, but it might well teach them both. "My ears are inan pípàdẹ? pointed?" She lifted her hair out of the way to show him. "And, my blood is silver. miu ceh'aj bou'eri nigbawo? All Biqaj. Is nigbawo silver? This.." She held her arm out to show them. At her wrist, where her pulse would be, there was the slight but noticeable glow of her silver blood.

Then, with a grin to Navik, she pointed and spoke with a good natured smile on her face as she did. "Also, I should say Sev bou'eri dẹkun? ke’u jasi afinju! I'm weird? You have wings. Is that right?" At the father's suggestion of what they were hunting, though, she shook her head. "I don't know what they are, I'm afraid. Can you track them?" She made sure that she asked them both that and seemed quite content to make their way from the firepit or to stay and talk as they wished.

"Dav takip kanom av èrè." Navik answered, his fingers moving through his hair, embarrassed, as the other called him teacher. It was a great compliment in his ears, even though the other probably didn't mean it as such. When she spoke to him again, Navik frowned. He wasn't sure how much he could actually teach her, nor if this was even worth the trouble for both of them. However, if the other was going to live in Desnind for a while, it would be useful to know how to speak their language. If he were honest, he could use some practice as well. "Aceh." he smiled. "Sev aumoj'ath anou maa, ọfïïsï ke’u. It is helpful. Thanks... Thank you?" Navik frowned, trying to remember how the other had thanked him. It was strange, to say the same thing twice, but since the other was trying, probably to help him, he could try as well. He could see a small smile on his father's face and had to resist the urge to scowl at him. At Vega's answer, Ti'wang's smile only grew.

"It is good you think this way. Work together is what makes life in Makubwa Lori possible." he looked at his son, and Navik once again had to remember himself they were in the presence of another. Had they not, he would probably have scowled. Again. It sometimes felt like he was just a kid when he was near his father.

A feeling that only intensified when Vega laughed at his mistake and corrected him. At least she wasn't mad.

"Kïnä." he whispered, embarrassed with his mistake. "Different." he repeated, trying to get the pronunciation right. He then shook his head. "Not weird. Different. Different, but beautiful. Ke’ua ligok awt takip dẹkun. Ṣïṣẹ awt bu-eaz. Tireaioang lokacin." he added, just to make sure. He smiled when she told him she was a mixed blood. "Yes. Snumìna ceh'aj. I am one. Teri." he said, making a swift gesture towards his wings. Navik did move closer, though, when she showed him her ears. He had seen a few Biqaj in the Mutums, but he had never got close enough to one to notice their eyes. Nor the ears. When she showed him her arm, his eyes widened. He placed a finger on her wrist. "This is silver?" he asked. "Rïkïcï. Silver is rïkïcï. Nigbawo is..." Navik looked up, at his father, eyes questioning him.

"Gold." the answer was short, like it often was, but Navik could see the softness in his features. His father was very pleased, although at what Navik didn't know.

"Gold." he repeated. It felt silly, repeating words like that, but at least he was trying. His wings moved a little when Vega pointed at them, and he gave her a half smile. In other circumstances, he would probably feel offended. However, his wings were perhaps just as interesting to her as her eyes had been to him. It didn't make him feel any less embarrassed, though. "Afinju is feather. I think." he looked at his father and he nodded. "Wings is holpxaype. Èrè ies dẹkun, ïrẹtï."

"Icraphern are... animal. This size." Navik moved his hand to show her. "Small, but fast. They are similar to... karshe. Deer?" he shrugged, not sure if it was the right word. "My father can track. Miu yeztlik'o' diuv ïgbẹyäwọ epọv."

"If you give Navik time, he can track them." his father spoke, and then motioned to the direction of the Itọju. "Can we go?"

The man began moving, fast enough that he wouldn't interrupt nor get in the way of their talking, but slow enough that they didn't need to worry about hurrying up. Navik sighed.

"Tẹ ies tìte. He is happy." he smiled. "Tẹ jägunjägun tä ärïwọ eo Bayyanannu bav'rit. He try to teach me... this..." he motioned between them, unsure how to say language. Hopefully she would understand. "When I am child."

To be a teacher was a great thing in Vega's ever-changing eyes, but she did not say that and instead listened to him speak. It was dificult to follow and she frowned in concentration, nodding her head to show that she understood, but only just. "Aceh?" is that... OK? Alright? It is one word for yes, yes?" She smiled and nodded, though. "Thank you is more formal." She considered how to explain that. "Thank you is more.."eku, ääbọ?" She pulled a stern face and then considered. "Ke’u ïrïn hasey ke’u bou'eri aṣayan inan tättärä. Ummm. Tä ngumu tìflrr swizaw faoi ke’u laiyara?" She didn't know the word for formal, so that would have to do. But then, "Thanks. More informal. Ke’u ïrïn tä alailesin?. Informal"

When she laughed at his assessment of her eyes, though, Vega thought that perhaps he was embarrassed or even cross and she smiled at him with a good natured grin. "Different. We are both," she gestured to herself and then him, "both of us are different and weird here, yes?" Considering it, she added. "Sev syayvi snẹyä tä bou'eri taru azuk tìkakpam. Tioni bou'eri eo", she spoke the words slowly, thinking about it as she did. Then, she added "Lokacin ies aceh? Dẹkun ies aceh?" It was a definite question she asked as she tried out the word that he had taught her but moments before. Then she smiled and added "Daneth bu-eaz? bu-eaz ies sẹyrï ibiti tä gbóògì."

He was intrigued by her blood, in a way that was more than interested and Vega watched in surprise as he put his hand where her pulse was. She looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Are you a healer? Umm.. I don't know the word, Kïnä" The young woman turned to his father and looked. "Please, what is the word for healer or doctor?"

When he told her what the correct word for silver was, Vega nodded and stored the knowledge away. "Yes. My blood is silver. Ara anou mwenzu", she smiled and nodded to his father and then turned her attention back to Navik. "Eyes change like the sea. Ears sharp like our wit. Blood silver like the stars. Miu yeztlik'o' upalowa eo ïdäkẹjï"

But they were tracking what sounded more or less like a deer? Vega nodded. "Yes. Good. I am ready." She fell into step and it must be said she was a little surprised at the older man and his skittering off ahead but not too far. Until Navik explained that he was pleased that his son seemed to be happy learning Common. "Language? Common language. I don't know the Xanthea word. Snafpìlfya ke’u ïrïn èrè? Bayyanannu.... dẹọdọ?"

She smiled at the thought of being taught this as a child. "My mother was Sev'ryn..Miu ọwọpọ." She sounded unsure on the word for mother. "Mänyän mulki hasey sev ceharav. Sev swizaw tä paruwo," Vega gave a slight shrug. "Not very good. Sorry." Frankly, she could talk about the similarities and differences in the two languages all trial, but she did recognise that they needed to concentrate and she started to try and do that, too. Hopefully, his father was paying more attention though.

"Aceh is yes." Navik thought for a moment. It wasn't exactly yes, but it meant the same. "Käsatseng is yes. Aceh is alright. Ok. Not know difference." he shrugged. To him, both words were the same, but he was sure there was some nuance he was missing. There were a lot of different words for yes in Xanthea, as well. As she explained the difference between thanks and thank you, Navik frowned, but nodded. Such similar words for so different treatment. "Formal is nikan." he offered. "Thank you. Ọfïïsï ke’u. Thanks is ọgágun. Informal? Firiji." it was beginning to get confusing, even for him, so he grew quiet for a moment, to try to understand the exact difference in the two forms.

Navik chose to make no comment about her saying both different and weird were alright. They weren't, not in his eyes, but her use of the word had been correct, and so, he smiled and nodded, to show her she had used them right.

When she asked for his father the word for doctor, Navik smiled.

"Wajen." 'doctor' had been the first word of common he had been taught, the first and the one he knew he would never forget, no matter what. "Wajen is doctor. Käsatseng, I am doctor. Not a good one, käteng. Still?" the pride was evident in his voice, even if the words were difficult. Navik knew there was still a long way for him to go before he could even consider himself a good doctor, but the fact that he was trying was important to him. "You are hunter?" she certainly looked like one.

Silver like the stars. The phrase was a beautiful one, and definitely accurate.

"Ke’ua yeztlik'o' ärä tä bou'eri av hultstxem kukuru." Navik offered, before thinking a little about how he could translate it. "You father. A wise man." it was awkward, but good enough for understanding.

"Language." he repeated, slowly, when she told him. "Common language. Language is ipanukan? Or Bayyanannu?" he heard a soft chuckle coming from his father, but this time, the older man didn't interfere. Navik sighed. "Sorry. I am... lazy? Nï." he shrugged, before repeating the word Vega was asking him about. "Bayyanannu." he said yet again, this time slower, pronunciation as clear as he could, to make it easier for her.

"Sev aji kïnä av ke’ua ọwọpọ..." Navik voice faltered for a moment, distracted enough that he didn't even remember to try and translate it. Vega had said it so naturally, that made Navik wonder how strong she was. He had never met his own mother, and the topic still brought him pain, even after so long. "Sev sweylu arọv miu ọwọpọ auk tọjẹ." he said, his voice barely more than a whisper.

During the time they were talking, they had already passed through the Itọju. His father took this moment to turn to them and intervene, and Navik wasn't sure if it was because it was time for the hunt or if he had noticed the tone of his voice.

"Icraphern footprints look like these." Ti'wang drew a shape in the ground, similar to a deer's footprint. "They are abundant around here, but with no sun, difficult to spot. They are fast and good in hiding, so no point in trying to run after one in this darkness. Our chance is to not be seen."

Navik nodded, fingers trailing in his bow. He wasn't particularly interested in it, as he knew that he would only scare the prey away if he tried to shoot. But his father wanted his presence, and so, he would at least try.

The devil was in the details and, it had to be said, the details were fascinating but at the same time Vega thought that her brain was starting to ache a little. They were getting into territory of nuance and minute difference which would help both of them, no doubt, but equally was complex. She grinned at Navik and she, too, lapsed into thought.

He was a doctor? Vega looked at him and she nodded. "That is a very good thing to be. You must be proud." And clever, she thought with a wry grin. Doctors were book-learning clever people; a thing that the young woman certainly was not in the slightest. What was she? Was she a hunter? Vega shrugged, slightly. "I don't know what I am yet. I came here to find out about my Sev'ryn half." Even though she had switched to just Common, she spoke clearly and slowly, but not shouting or like he was a fool to be patronised. "Learn about me. I will leave in Ashan, see more of the world. I am a wanderer, I suppose."

His soft words caused Vega to look at him with a soft smile. Her expression was stoic but her eyes told a different story. "Mänyän mulki murädï ọsïsẹ sev pataki. Murädï sev hìtua pataki." Searching for the word, somehow and then she got it. "Cun'ahee dabi. Sev hìtua pataki cun'ahee dabi." When he said, though, that he did not know his own mother, Vega just put her hand on his arm for a brief trill. All sassy and teasing and obnoxious was gone as she said, "Èrè didara ise sise. Syayvi wajen mu jade ọsïsẹ."

Then, the father spoke and it was welcome for Vega, it must be said. She moved and looked at the tracks, examining them and she nodded her head. "I understand. Walk slow and quiet and not move if we see one." She grinned at Navik as she readied her bow. He looked about as pleased to be here as she would be delighted to attend a formal function.

Still, he was a grown up and he could chose to be here, or not as the case may be so Vega did not try and persuade him. As they walked together, she kept an eye out and then glanced at Navik and spoke again. "I am trying to find out what I can of the Sev'ryn, my mother's people. My people. What was it like to be a child here?"
