Lightbane. It had been something which she was motivated to cure anyway, since four men had come into the clinic where she worked and all of them had it. That wasn't usual and Faith had focused on making sure that she began to understand how it might be. The condition wasn't contagious so, she wondered, how did four men get it together, at the same time. That had led to a long consideration of the circumstances around catching it and Faith had come to what seemed to be an inescapable conclusion.

Lightbane was caused by the blossom of the gingko tree. It was a reaction, akin to hayfever. She had realised this just the trial before and, in that realisation, she had come to some others. The very treatments which were given to treat lightbane were exacerbating it and Faith very much hoped that early treatment of the reaction might prove to be at the least an alleviation of the symptoms and, just maybe, a cure.

She had spent the last trial doing her best to make sure that she had read up everything she could. Without a doubt, she had to be careful of the contraindications here, in order to ensure that she got it right. So, Faith had spent her time reading, checking out the dosage and looking at what to use.

Chamomile, of all things, was the best anti-allergen for hayfever, along with ginger and green tea. Faith had worked all night and she had created a proportional recipe for eye bath, drops, a tea and, just in case, an incense which could burn. She wanted to make absolutely sure about this and so she had tested out a number of different combinations and had come up with four which she felt would be optimal. That was done for a specific reason, of course, she would give each of the four men a different combination. It was cruel, but it was a necessary cruelty. Surgery, after all, was cutting. Yet, what it did was cut in order to cure and this would allow her and those who worked alongside and after her to refine the process. That would benefit the men and women, children too, who came afterwards.

So, she pulled the names out randomly for who got which combination and then Faith went to see Galena. She tapped the door and went into her office as she was bid to. Galena looked up and raised an eyebrow. "You look tired." There was no doubting the truth of that but Faith pushed it to one side.
"I'm fine. I have what I believe will help." Galena didn't ask who, she didn't need to.
"What did you use?"
"Chamomile, ginger and green tea." Faith looked at her mentor and Galena nodded.
"What ratios?"
"I've read different theories, especially in the use of chamomile. So, I've made four. One with no chamomile, then in low, medium and high quantities comparable to the other ingredients." Galena smiled and asked with a soft voice.
"And how have you determined who will get which one?" Faith breathed in and smiled, but the smile was tight and went nowhere near her eyes.
"Randomly. It was the only fair way to do it."

If Chamomile helped, or did not, and this was time sensitive, she was condemning these men. But without her testing, they were doomed to not be cured. She had to try. Galena nodded her head.
"Then go try. How quickly do you think you might see results if there are any to see?" Faith shrugged and for a moment she looked, and felt, hopeless.
"I don't know." It was the simple truth.

She had the four combinations and she moved into the preparation room in order to begin the process. Making the eye bath and the eye drops was fairly straightforward and she did that with her usual level of precision and meticulous focus. Faith had considered the measurements, she followed them precisely and she put together the two things which were most likely to work. Each one, she did in four different ratios and labelled them carefully. After all, there was no point in doing this if she did not do it as efficiently and effectively as she could.

So, having made the two of those, it was on to the tea and that required the working out of how much raw tea she needed to make in order to seep it in water and achieve the right potency. As she remembered her first lessons in mathematics with Padraig, Faith felt emotion threaten to overwhelm her but she could not risk it. She could not. He needed her to find this cure, he needed her to put this right and so she took all of the fear that she felt, all of the doubt and uncertainty in herself and she pushed it, firmly, into her hands.

Glaring at her hands, a deep frown furrowing her brow, Faith knew that she could no more push her love into her hands than she could voluntarily cut them off. However, what she could do was to take doubt and all things negative. She had to. Looking at her hands, Faith prayed to Famula that the light of her lantern might lead her. To Vri, she beseeched that the love which she felt was sufficient and strong enough that she might be able to do what needed to be done here.

Having made everything which needed making, Faith prepared the tea and then made her way into each of the four rooms. Each man had been given a private room because, as the disease progressed, even opening the door was painful in the extreme and so, if there was only one person in there, then they only had to endure necessary openings of the door.

She made her way in to the four of them. Making sure that she tapped the door each time, she gave the patient the time to cover his eyes. Then, Faith went in to each one of them, explaining that she had started the search for a cure and she had come up with her first attempt. It was a tricky balancing act between being hopeful and cautious and Faith needed to manage it with each individual, considering their individual way of being, their general personality and their mood at the time. This, she did and, as she closed the door from the fourth of the men, Gavin, Faith sighed. She had done all she could and now, her only option was to do the hardest thing of all.

Now, they had to wait.

She wanted to pace and fret, to spend her time worrying about what was happening with the four men she had treated. However that was not service and so, Faith instead made sure that none of her other patients were suffering because of her investment in this situation. The serious young woman who seemed to Galena to be far too young to know as much about medicine as she did got about her shift. One of the patients they had there at the moment was a young woman whose infant daughter was unwell. Faith spent some time with the two of them, talking through the mother's concerns. It seemed to Faith that the issue was that the child just kept getting ill and so her ability to fight diseases must, Faith considered, be compromised.

The issue, of course, was the fact that the baby was unable to digest most things, so they were limited in what they were able to deliver. However, she and Padraig had worked together quite a few trials ago now. "Is she still not eating at all?" Ffion, the young mother, shook her head and Faith considered it. "I'd like to try and deliver some of the medicine through vapours. Things that we can't feed her, because of her age, I can extract the oil and combine it with a base carrier oil, then heat that and deliver the vapours to her." Would it work? Faith wasn't entirely sure but she had tested it enough to know that it certainly wouldn't do any harm. When Ffion agreed, Faith smiled and squeezed the young woman's hand. "We'll make it work. None of us are giving up and she's a real little fighter. Stay with it." Faith put her hand on the infant's head and prayed that Famula might protect this child and give her a longer lifetime than this.

Then, she moved and arranged for the treatments to start on Ffion's baby. She wrote it all down and collected together the equipment. It wasn't pleasant, but if it delivered the medicine the child needed, then it would have to be done. With a bit of luck it would make a difference, and she prayed that it did. Galena came to stand next to her as she got the equipment and Faith smiled to her mentor. "Faith," Galena asked, "what are you doing?"
"We think that Ffion's baby has some kind of an infection, yes?" Galena nodded, "So, I want to not just deliver the eucalyptus to clear her congestion via vapour, but the yellow dragon tree leaf too." Galena looked at Faith and raised an eyebrow. "I've extracted the oil and I'm going to put it in with some base oil. Then, deliver it in as condensed a fashion as possible, directly up the nose."

"Where did this idea come from?" Galena looked at Faith and wondered what went on in the short young woman's head.
"Cooking. Reductions in gravy and freezing alcohol. I tested it with Padraig the other trial." Faith smiled. "He's a professor at the university. Physics and chemistry. He's studying both of them, too." Her face showed the depth of feeling she had for the man she spoke about.
"You must be very worried about him." Galena's voice was gentle. Faith, however, shook her head.
"I have nothing to worry about. He'll be alright." Galena seemed a little surprised and Faith explained. "I know he will. I have faith in Famula and Vri that, if he is meant to be then he will be."
"And if he is not meant to be?" Galena asked, kindly.
"Then we will be." It appeared that Famula and Vri weren't the only beings she had absolute faith in, but she got no chance to say anything as one of the nurses there came up to them. With urgent tone she said that Faith and Galena should go and see Gavin, one of the four patients who had come in with lightbane.

Faith looked at Galena and the pair of them hurried. Gavin was sitting in his room. He had the mask over his eyes, but the room was dark. They made their way in, Faith leading Galena; with Famula's mark she could see fine in the dark, after all. He turned his head to them and smiled, "Faith?"
"Yes, Gavin, I'm here. Galena, too, the head of the Order." Faith moved over to him and put her hand on his arm. Since he couldn't see, it was important that he had contact she knew. "What is it, are you alright?"
"Is the door closed, Faith?" Gavin had a smile on his face. Faith nodded, then realised what a stupid thing that was to do.
"Yes, Gavin, it is. It's very dark in here." He started to lift his mask and Faith frowned. Even the low levels of light should be painful and she opened her mouth to speak and then let out a gasp as he lifted the mask and smiled at her. "Gavin...." Looking at his eyes she realised that he had a small amount of visible iris. It was working. She beamed in delight. "I'm so glad. I am. I have to... Gavin, I have to go. I will be back, I promise you." He nodded and smiled, reaching out to grab her hand. He held on to it for a moment and she could not deny him that, the two of them stood and her delight was evident on her face.

Then, he lowered the mask to protect him eyes again and Faith turned and exited. Having grabbed the ingredients she needed, she left the Order of the Adunih and ran all the way home to give this to Padraig.

Your writing has been improving a lot since I last reviewed you! Just one problem with this snippet:

Galena looked up and raised an eyebrow. "You look tired." There was no doubting the truth of that but Faith pushed it to one side.
"I'm fine. I have what I believe will help." Galena didn't ask who, she didn't need to.

"What ratios?"
"I've read different theories, especially in the use of chamomile. So, I've made four. One with no chamomile, then in low, medium and high quantities comparable to the other ingredients." Galena smiled and asked with a soft voice.

Having Galena react in the same paragraph when Faith is speaking, as the subject of the paragraph, made the last statement here confusing; it was as if Galena had spoken the words, forcing me to go back and read to make sure I wasn't wrong. You do the same thing with '"I'm fine. I have what I believe will help." Galena didn't ask who, she didn't need to.' and voice.
'"And how have you determined who will get which one?" Faith breathed in and smiled,'

Another: Galena nodded her head.
