"I understand your concern, Gwen. I truly do. However, I had to meet with Lord Venora. You're right though, I am tired." She sipped the tea Gwen had made for her and she pulled a face. "This is disgusting, you know."
"I know, Lady Andaris, but it helps you heal. Are you ready for bed?" Celeste could not deny that yes, she was.
"You passed on my apologies to Lord Krome and Baron and Baroness Krome? I had hoped to dine with them tonight." The 'tea' was already working and Celeste's eyes were heavy. "It's just... my chest is still so wheezy."
"Indeed, Lady Andaris. The doctor told you, you aren't out of the woods yet, do you remember? Still, you wrote it all in your note to Lord Krome and he sends his best wishes to you. He'll come and see you tomorrow." Celeste nodded, Xander must be exhausted she considered. Still, it was strange that he had not come to see her, he usually did.

Of course, Gwen had taken care of that. She had the note to Xander ready to go, folded in her pocket. She had seen and copied Celeste's handwriting enough times now. So, Celeste had written a note apologising for not coming to dinner but saying that she felt too unwell. However, he was welcome to visit, her note had said. Of course, the note which Gwen delivered said that Celeste was going straight to bed as she felt most unwell and that she would look forward to seeing him tomorrow. When Gwen had delivered the note to Xander, she had also reassured him that she was sure it was just Her Ladyship over exerting herself but she suggested that, should Lady Andaris not feel better in the morning, perhaps a visit from the doctor would not go amiss?

Gwen had been, in fairness, the very picture of concerned servant and she helped Celeste into bed. As she lay down, Celeste considered that her breathing still wasn't as improved as the doctor had said it would be, but she felt sleep overtake her even as the thoughts bounced in her head.

When she woke, or even why she woke, Celeste did not know. Maybe there had been a noise or maybe it was the same determination to not die which had meant that she survived the combination of the illness with the poison which her maid had been feeding her. However, the fact that she woke just a split second before the cushion was placed over her mouth meant that Celeste saw Gwen standing over her and she felt the cushion and the pressure on her face.

Brown eyes widened and in her drugged state, Celeste felt panic hit her. However, unlike previously, perhaps because of the drugs, or the fear, the fact that her attacker was a woman or even, because she was getting used to being attacked, her reaction to that panic was to strike out. Her hands moved with the aim of hitting and as she flailed in the bed, she realised that she was too weak to do what she needed to. However, her fingers curled around a small ornament and with a flash of irony, Celeste flung it at Gwen.

It didn't hurt the woman, but it caused enough of a wince for pressure to be release on the pillow and Celeste took in an enormous gulp of air and screamed one word.

"XANDER!!!"

Then, with all the strength of adrenaline, as she realised that the maid was recognising that her time here was done and was starting to move ~ Celeste flung herself at Gwen, tackling her to the ground. It wasn't a sophisticate move, but it was effective for a few trill, which meant that, as Xander burst through the door he saw Celeste and Gwen wrestling on the floor and Gwen backhanding Celeste away. As Celeste let out a cry, the maid turned and ran towards the window.

He had been disappointed to hear that Celeste would not be joining them for dinner. Although it was probably for the best with his father's unhealthy obsession. Xander was sure he had caught the man actually looking through her slightly open door one time. Of course he could not say that to her or to his father, the man might try to kill him if he did. No, now he was to be aware and vigilant, he would not confront his father but he would keep a close eye on his father's actions towards his fiance. For now there was no actual harm besides some discomfort but if the man were to take his strange obsession any further it would not be tolerated. Xander would not allow his father to have what he wants always especially if that thing is who he now cares for.

However, what had upset Xander more than her absence from the dinner was the request he not visit that night. It was most unusual and she had seemed to appreciate his company this far. He hoped she hadn't lost the feelings she was developing for him. He lay in bed as he thought about this, he was wearing the pyjamas Celeste had bought for him. Previously he had worn a lot less to bed but now he was changing and so were some of his habits. Celeste was having a surprisingly large effect on him. He wondered if he would continue to change in this way. These were his last thoughts as he drifted off to sleep.

He was roused from his sleep by the sound of a smashing, much like the ones he had heard just trials earlier when he fought with Celeste. Perhaps someone had told her there was no money left for dresses, he mused to himself as he sat upright in his bed. However, the joking mood was gone when he heard the muffled and weak scream. His name being called by Celeste, her call for him to rescue her yet again. It was much like a wolf pup would call for its lost pack, he had no clue what baby dragons did on such a situation.

There was no time to worry about what baby dragons did though, only time to act. In moment he was on his feet and pulling his sword from its sheathe where it hung on the wall. He heard another loud bump and crash come from the room and he quickened his pace more. Heading out into the hall and then to the door of Celeste’s room. He tried it with a turn of the handle and hard push but it appeared to be locked. He did not have time to get the spare key either and so came his only option.

He had never broken down a drop before but how hard could it really be. Apparently harder than Xander had thought when his first attempt just ended up hurting his shoulder more than budging the door. His using his body like a battering ram appeared not to work. Instead he stopped the ramming and run up and instead went with staying close and swaying in and out applying force this his whole upper arm in swings of his weight. Finally after the third hard and heavy bash the doors locking mechanism broke and it swung open to reveal the two women wrestling on the floor. His sword hung in his hand as he watched in amazement the maid slap the poor lady before seeing Xander and heading out the window.

Xander acted as fast as he could and in doing so just managed to catch her lower calf with the tip of his blade on her way out but beyond that was very unsuccessful. His poor bride to be seemed unable to catch a break this season. ”Celeste, are you okay, did she hurt you too badly?” He was full of questions for the woman as he let his blade clatter to the floor and he knelt down before her, wincing a little at his mostly healed wounds protesting.

"XANDER!" Celeste yelled again and then she let out the strangest sound she had ever made; a sort of whooping war cry as she tackled Gwen. The maid and she crashed to the floor as Xander tried to break the door down. Why didn't he just open it, Celeste thought wildly. She wrapped her arms around Gwens legs with a cry of pure fury. Celeste was drugged and she had no skill in such but she had the benefit of adrenaline and pure emotion; it wasn't enough though and Gwen saw the opening she needed, backhanding Celeste across the face and sending her spinning, just enough that Celeste let go of Gwen's legs and so the maid moved.

Not before Xander struck her with the blade, though, and he might notice in that moment that Gwen did not bleed. Instead, a light emanated from her leg as the maid literally exited via the large window, on to the balcony and into the night. Celeste lifted her head to look at Xander and he'd seen the look on her face before. She'd been flinging ornaments at him at the time, although the drugs she had been given were equally evident in her heavy lidded eyes and strangely dilated pupils.

"Hurt me? Hurt me? I'm going to kill her." Celeste half stood and then sat back down with a perplexed expression. The burst of adrenaline was wearing off and she could feel the exhaustion and wheezing in her chest again. It had been there the whole time, but fear and circumstance had made her act. "Xander?" She blinked a few times, trying to get him to stay in some kind of focus.

The sounds from outside and inside the house would let Xander know that pursuit was being given, that alarms had been raised. Guards came to the door but, upon seeing the Lord there and having made eye contact with Xander, they stood guard with backs turned. "She had a cushion over my face. I felt, I feel most peculiar." Celeste looked at Xander and sighed. "Third time was not the charm, it seemed."

As she looked at him, Celeste realised that she was wearing a sheer nightgown and was revealing more leg and flesh than she might normally, but then she realised on the back of that quite quickly that she simply did not care in this moment. "I swear, Xander. I feel worse. It's not doing what the doctor said." She looked up at him and she looked, and felt, lost. Her anger was gone and she was left feeling weak and vulnerable. "Will you help me off the floor, please?"

Sleep, she knew, would not happen now for either of them and, as the sounds of the guards searching increased, Celeste looked at Xander and said, very quietly, "I don't want your father to see me in this."

Xander of course was surprised when his blade drew no blood but instead a strange light. He had no clue what was causing that and would indeed need to do some reading, understanding that might be very important. If they were to search for the woman, like he was sure they would, that could be vital information whatever it reveals. However, he has no time to ponder the implications of a lack of blood. His fiance was on the floor beside him, that was more important. He had to see to her before anything else could be done.

There was clearly something wrong, something off about her then. Xander looked into her heavy and weak eyes, the pupils dilated. It wasn't right and it seemed more like she was drunk than just tired. Then he thought to what she had said not long before, when she was sick and had believed the maid to be poisoning her. The doctor had told him something else must have also been causing her to be hot hard by the sickness. As well as what the Bastard Warrick had said, he had no doubt now that she had been getting drugged by that 'tea’.

He was knelt next to her as he looked to the guards who got the message of facing away and standing guard. It appeared the extra security since the attack after the engagement were hard at work trying to catch the woman. Heavy boots could be heard running outside as well as horses and dogs. The two were by the door as well. ”It appears your sick self was right about the maid, I'm sorry I did not believe you back then.” He examined her eyes closely again, she was definitely being influenced by some kind of drug. Xander would collect that soon. ”I’m sorry it took me so long to wake and help you. We were lucky third time was not the charm, it would break me to lose you now.” He wondered if she would remember him saying that by morning.

He hadn't until now realised just what she was wearing. Only a thin nightgown, soft and silky and pleasing to look at. As well as revealing, it exposed more of Celeste than he had ever seen before. Had he been a southern noble he might have swooned at the sight of so much flesh. Not only flesh but perfect and unmarred, pale and inviting. Xander shook his head a little, dismissing any stray thoughts he had. Instead helping her to her feet like she requested and onto the bedside. Her fear of his father seeing her was well founded he has become odd around her. So he quickly moved and closed the door, pressing it heavily into place even if it would no longer lock.

”I won't let him see you, don't worry, let me find you something to wear.” Xander was no hand maid, he was no woman either. So upon opening the wardrobe he was met with nothing but confusion. He had seen women's clothes on but never off, he hadn't the slightest idea where to begin. He stared blankly at the closet and tried to think what to get. He saw a long dark blue dress and picked it from the hanger. It would cover all her legs and also her shoulders, it was not the most beautiful if items but it was practical and would suffice. ”Can you, do it yourself or do you need my help?” He hoped she'd say yes, his heart thudding in his chest. He had never been in this kind of situation before it was different and he felt strange feelings.

He held the dress out to her thinking she would most likely dismiss it and scold him for his actions and offer to assist her. He new how inappropriate it was for him to do so, it was socially wrong for him to even be in there. Not that he really cared and social convention and nobody within the house would spread rumours. He knew them too well for that and they were loyal like a wolf to its packmate. If she took it and did not request his help he would then stand by the door and look away. If she asked for his help well he would do his best not to see more than he should.

"Did I know?" Celeste asked, not remembering that she had told him that she thought the tea was poisoning her. Then she gave a slight giggle and frowned at the same time. "Xander, I feel drunk." She looked at him and smiled, then lifted her hand to touch his cheek. "I'm sorry I threw things at you. I've never cared about anyone enough to do that before." When he said that it would break him if he had lost her, Celeste smiled and shook her head. "You're silly to think that. You're strong. But look, I'm not lost, you know just where I am."

If she remembered in the morning, it was going to make her curl up in shame, but as he moved forward to help her, Celeste looked at him with her vaguely out of focus eyes and smiled. "You are so much more than I thought you were. You are my wolf pup and I'm pleased to be marrying you. We can make it work, can't we? I want to." She sighed and chewed her lip, wanting to say something but not quite.

He helped her sit on the bed and got her a blue dress from the wardrobe. She shook her head when he offered to help her and then looked at it and frowned. "Maybe a little bit? Just...unbutton it at the back for me and then button me up when I'm done?" After he'd undone it she could get herself into it without help so he turned around. Celeste removed her nightgown and pulled on her dress. As she did that, she considered. "I got mad at her, Xander. I wanted to hurt her. I was afraid, but as soon as I woke up I fought." She paused as she struggled to get an arm in, then smiled as she managed it. It wasn't usually this tricky, she considered. "I don't want you to lose me, either. I'm looking forward to our life. If I hold my hair out of the way will you do me up, please? I'm shaking."

Once her dress was fastened, Celeste looked down at herself and another giggle escaped her lips. Celeste had never giggled that she could remember. "I look like a frump. You chose me a frumpy dress. What should we do now?" She looked around and frowned. "Where's Gwen?"

Gwen, it seemed, had given Celeste a stronger dose than usual and she was confused, but it was fast acting and fast leaving the system. As lucidity started to return to her at least a little, Celeste reached out to Xander and clutched his arm. "Take the rest of the tea. You don't want it getting into the wrong hands," she whispered and looked at him to see what he thought. Besides, she considered, one never knew when a good dose of poison might come in handy.

He had never seen her this way, so young looking and easy going. She seemed more like a teenager who was drunk for the first time. It did not quite suit her or at least not in Xander's mind. He was attracted to her intelligence and her cunning mind, her stunning appearance did help too, but for Xander it was not why he was happy to be marrying this woman. [/B]”Not at all, no need to apologise for expressing yourself. I always hated those things anyway.”[/B] In reality he had no feelings towards the ornaments either way but for the purpose of now he had not liked them.

Her words made him feel good, that he had proved himself to be more than just another rich fool. He was glad she was interested and happy to be marrying him, it was much preferred to her hating him. ”I think we can, most certainly.” He smiled as he helped her onto the bed and then collected her a dress. Luckily for him he would have no need to help with the actual dressing besides the buttons. This was good not only because he would not be forced to lay his eyes upon the body he was not yet supposed to see but also he hadn't the foggiest how to dress a lady.

So once he had unbuttoned the dress he moved and stood over by the door. Yet, as is the way if heroes he could not help but peek. They are always told not to look but like them he fell victim to his human side and just briefly cocked his head to reveal the pale and moonlit body of Celeste. He only glimpsed it for a second, it was such a fleeting look he could not even recognise what parts he saw. Yet it made his heart race a little as he stood facing the door and scolding himself mentally. His heart rate had settled back to a comfortable pace when she called him over to help out. She spoke to him about how she had fought, which he had been witness too so briefly and also how she again looked forward to their life together.

He stood at her back and examined her thin spine, the flesh pulled lightly over the bones bellow. As backs went it was a nice back, if there was such a thing as a nice back, Xander did not know. So he moved onto the buttons, pulling the fabric together in the centre and buttoning from top to bottom. He for some reason always buttoned the wrong way. He was carefully around the lower buttons, making sure not to pinch the skin or appear he was touching inappropriately. He was far more wary than he may have needed to be. ”My apologies, Celeste, I am not the best with clothing and especially not with the clothing of women.” That was clear from the frumpy, as celeste called it, looking dress.

”Gwen was the one that attacked you remember, she fled through that window.” He pointed towards the still open window that was filling the room with cold air and moonlight. He was glad to see that Celeste had not forgotten how to be scheming and prepared in her drugged up state as she suggested he keep the poison for himself. It could be useful in the future no doubt. So as she suggested and after some rummaging through the dresser he found the small pouch. It contained the strange 'tea’ she had been giving Celeste. He held it up in the light before pocketing it to be stored away for later if it was ever needed. Then he took Celeste so they could go to the kitchen and get her some real tea to calm her nerves and sober her up.

Comment: This was very mysterious! I haven’t read all of your threads, so I don’t know if there’s some more background information on Gwen somewhere, and I have a lot of questions now. Did Gwen act independently or is she working together with somebody? And what about the light that is emanating from her leg? Is she an Yludih? Will she ever pay for what she has done?

Celeste, I wasn’t sure which unarmed skill you preferred, so I just wrote “Unarmed Combat”. Feel free to assign the knowledge about tackling somebody to the ground to a skill of your choice!

Anyway, I loved both of your writing in this. The story was engaging. Structure-wise there wasn't anything that really caught my attention.

If you have any issues with my review (e.g. because you think you deserve more knowledges/fame/etc. - or less) please don’t hesitate to send me a PM!
