The Tunawa Captain

Glass Viola

Type: Mixed wind/string instrument made with Egilrun glass

Details: The Glass Viola started out as an experiment but quickly started a trend. Crafted in Egilrun, it is unique to the island of Scalvoris and sparked a number of other instruments made from Egilrun glass. The "horn" section has a mouthpiece where the musician blows and which, when played correctly emits a deep and resonating sound. There are strings on the side which are plucked as the instrument is played. The plucking of the string causes a vibration in the glass which changes the pitch of the sound. It is a truly beautiful, soulful and almost always melancholic sound.

Gilra

Type: Stringed Instrument

Details: The Gilra is a beautiful instrument which is seen commonly throughout Scalvoris. It is, to a guitar, what a cello is to a violin. Although it has only four strings, the gilra plays at an extreme bass and the deep body of the instrument means that it reverberates in a truly beautiful sound. The deep pitch at which this plays means that it produces haunting melodies or works as an excellent accent / accompaniment to group music.

The gilra is also known as the smugglers' gift as the deep and hollow body of the instrument means that it is often used for hiding small, illicit substances or goods. However, the more that this is done, the more that the authorities know to look out for it.

Glass Flute

Type: Egilrun Glass Percussion

Details: Despite it's name, the Glass Flute is a percussion instrument. A series of glass 'bowls' sit in a specifically designed glass and metal frame. These produce music in a manner akin to the way a fine glass will when the rim is rubbed. The musician has what looks, at first glance, to be something akin to three long leaves which they use to create the sound, but these are made from another kind of glass, known locally as "liquid glass". The "liquid glass leaves" are used in a circular motion around the bowls, with different parts producing different sounds. Generally speaking, bass notes are towards the bottom of the instrument, higher pitches further up, but each Glass Flute is unique.

The sounds produced by a glass flute are delicate, but what really makes these instruments unique is the fact that they can produce such variety. In well-trained hands, they can echo the sound of rain, laughter or harmonize in beautiful melodies. A truly versatile instrument, the glass flute needs a good level of skill in order to make it sound wonderful.

Plucker

Type: Stringed

Details: An unusual stringed instrument which is played by someone sitting down who lays it flat across their legs. With fifteen strings which each curve around on to the fret board, this is not a beginners instrument. The plucker gives a wide range of notes, spanning twenty octaves in pitch. It is that variety which is its strength and which causes difficulty in playing.

Because the strings are not straight, but curve around to the fret board so that they can be accessible, this instruments real strength is in the playing of long, drawn out notes. More staccato notes need to be plucked rather than strummed, hence its name.

Harmonika

Type: Egilrun Glass: Wind

Details: The Egilrun Glass Harmonika is a wonder. They range in size from tiny to very large and they consist of a number of pillars of Egilrun glass, of varying height and thickness. These produce sound in response to air. Smaller harmonikas are played by holding them in a wooden frame and blowing, others have to be stood behind and yet, the slightest breath plays the notes from the instrument, no matter what the size. It isn't known why as it is a closely guarded secret, but the sound made are beautiful.

The sounds from a Harmonika are reminiscent of a clarinet mixed with a flute and it is a haunting instrument. Of course, the fact that it responds to the slightest out-breath also means that often they are simply placed on the ground and the winds themselves play a beautiful melody.

Tapper / Finger Piano

Type: String / Percussion

Details: The tapper / finger piano is a wonder of Scalvoris engineering and ingenuity. No two tappers are alike, being made out of things and stuff which the individual considers pleasing on the eye or has no more use for. Functioning on the same principle as a piano, there are prongs which must be tapped or flicked and these hit strings, just as a piano. The sound produced by each tapper is unique, with it's own idiosyncrasies in terms of tone and pitch, but as a rough baseline they tend to sound like small, usually higher pitched although not always, pianos. Due to the nature of the instrument, they tend to lack the depth of sound of a piano, but some of them produce music which is truly wonderful.

Strumpet

Type: Wind

Details: The strumpet is a firm favourite among street performers and around the many campfire parties which happen on the beaches of Scalvoris. It is a harmonica-like instrument with small trumpet horns which amplify the sounds which come out of it. Most strumpets are cheap and cheerful and tend towards a rather high-pitched almost kazoo-like sound coming out of it. However the more expensive strumpets (from street-trumpets) can make a beautiful, haunting sound.

Lap Fiddle

Type: String

Details: The lap-fiddle is almost a violin but isn't. It is usually worn with a strap, like a guitar or lute. It is played with a bow, like a traditional fiddle, but the fingers on the non-bow hand press the keys to the side of the fret board, rather than pressing down on it. This means that there are usually only three strings, but there is a greater variety of notes as the keys allow that. It is a beautiful instrument and some of them seen around Scalvoris, especially in Almund, are works of art.
