20th Ymiden, 717
They had come to help, to discover and explore. To find people who were lost and in trouble. There had been some issues along the way and they had seemed to have come to an uneasy truce.

And then, Delta had attempted murder.

At that point, in that moment, the dynamic changed and there began a series of events which led to a probably inevitable conclusion. Arguing, disagreeing, having differences of opinion or philosophy ~ those were all things which a group could manage. However, violence was never likely to be somewhere they could come back from as a group.

As Delta had attempted to kill the terrified and vulnerable girl, Padraig had reacted. This had led to a standoff which split the group down the middle. Delta had tried to kill the slave girl for reasons which were complex and about Delta's pain and anguish, and as Delta's own mind crumbled and she whispered a few words, no one except Pash could begin to understand why she had attempted to murder the most vulnerable amongst them.

Yet Pash was somewhat busy with dealing with his own emotional state to be able to explain.

So, Delta whispered snippets which made, in all likelihood, little sense to anyone else. She crumbled and fell. Pash, too, was hanging on to coherent by the skin of his seafaring teeth. He had a medical kit with instructions from Padraig and a sheer determination not to abandon the expedition.

Varn shared no such determination. Padraig kept hold of the sword of light and, with his other hand, took hold of the slave and led her out. His sword didn't lower and he and Varn started to move.

As they did, Lakia turned her bow and pointed it at Varn. There was no doubt that she was taking her shot, as Varn kept walking. He wasn't going to listen to any nonsense, he had come close to his edge previously in the tent, but the sight of someone trying to harm the shivering and vulnerable girl who had been tied to the door was too much for him. Varn considered that, as he saw and reacted on pure instinct to having an arrow pointed at him for what he decided was the last time.

And by every Immortal, he was fast. The difference between Varn's skill and Lakia's was immediately and briefly evident. Lakia turned and was pulling back the arrow ready and Varn had already aimed and released. His arrow flew, straight and true and Lakia felt it embed in her shoulder. The pain was exquisite and intense. Varn had chosen that point on her body for a specific reason; there was no way she would be using a bow for the foreseeable future. The arrow entered her body and pierced right through.

Her own shot was knocked off course by that, embedding in Varn's armour on his chest.

"You ever point that at me again, I'll kill you. Twice." Varn said and he walked. He didn't listen to Delta's whispered words, Pash's or Lakia's spoken ones. What he did was simple; he kept moving and he made sure that he was between the slave and the three who were remaining. He didn't lower his bow and he didn't drop his gaze.
Off Topic
To be clear, I've checked with Lakia's player that Lakia would take the shot if Varn kept walking.

Varn Varn has left. I need to be completely clear ~ if anyone follows or attacks, he will use his bow and he will aim for killing blows. He's reached the point of no return and will no longer be going to crippling shots. If you choose to fight him, you are entering a situation where your pc might well die. Padraig Padraig has left and won't be posting in the thread again. He has taken the slave with him. She has gone, willingly. Prophets' Notes updated and slave NPC acquired.
► Show Spoiler
Lakia: You just got shot in the shoulder. It is very painful and you have an arrow in you. Lifting your arm is near to impossible and you are in need of medical attention. The three of you who are remaining, please let me know what you plan on doing. In your next post what I need to know is if you will be continuing into the remains or not. If you choose to go into the ruins: Be aware - this was a high risk thread when there were 4 pcs and 2 npcs who were all fully fit. If you choose to go ahead, the risks are much much greater than they were

“Wait, what? No, I can’t—you can’t just—OI!“

Pash looked down at the medical bag in his hands as Padraig finished his instructions and made his decisions. While he was sure he could figure things out in a pinch, this was not a pinch. Anything but. This was a vise. Or the taloned grip of some huge monster, made up entirely of shadows and fear. The tall Biqaj groaned, and Delta would feel a surge of helpless frustration, anger, and doubt that most likely paled in comparison to her own but also probably was not welcome in a tangle that was already so damaged and over-burdened with negativity.

Maybe this was a bad dream. If it was, it would be damn nice to wake up right now.

He opened his mouth to say more, stormy gaze watching both other men in their broken group begin to leave the way they had come, Varn bristling, his whole self an extension of the taut bow in his hands. Pash didn’t even need Empathy to feel the tension, so oppressive and crushing as it had become. He felt his resolve crumble under the realization that he was about to be truly alone—the only barely sane living creature for breaks of travel. He already felt like he was drowning, the Biqaj slave woman’s emotions so much cold water in his lungs, but he didn’t even feel like he had enough sanity to make a complete sentence that made sense.

Lakia spoke up, snapping Pash’s attention briefly to her as Padraig and the archaeologist’s slave walked away, hands washed of everything else, their guard lingering to cover them. While her theories were wild, nothing wasn’t here. He, too, was suspicious of everyone, but if there was one person he hadn’t been, it was Varn. Not because they shared a heritage and certainly not because of his personality, but because in spite of his own loud chauvinism, he still valued life. Pash valued life, too. Intelligent, breathing, thinking life.

It was when she turned to him, specifically, that he blinked. Her question about brokenness was, in fact, not even the last straw he thought it was.

For a moment, his expression was blank, as if it took him too long to put her words together into a thought he could actually understand. He bit his lip as if to hold his tongue, and stood, wavering a little on unsteady feet. While Lakia could only hear his tone of voice and see the twist of anger that creased its way into his salty features—a rare expression for the musician, though no one here knew him well enough at all to know that—Delta would feel the swift undertow of hurt, of anger, of defiance. It rose above the surge of the Biqaj slave woman’s own thread shared despair, a fire that surged from within the hull of his chest and into his words,

“’S far ’s I know, everyone else’s broken mind isn’t because o’ what’s goin’ on here. It’s because they’re crazy. It's because y'all came here that way—crazy. I’m no’ strong enough a man, no’ strong enough a mage, to fix what’s happenin’ here, alone. I broke m’self, reached too far, did too much, an’—wait. Are y’ jokin’ right now? Here? In this mess? For Immortal’s sake—Me? Fix her? I didn’t break her. You did. She’s your property, an’ you’ve done this all yourself. ”

Pash all but growled his words, accusatory, biased, his Ne’Haer-born blood boiling at the thought. He didn't know their history, didn't know where they had come from or what they had done. He didn't know anything about Lakia or Delta save that one owned the other. But that was enough. Everything else, at this point, was madness. Calloused fingers moved to reach for the pouch that contained his coins, ready to offer to buy her freedom right now on the spot. He couldn’t fix her here. At all. Possibly ever. But he could take her somewhere else, find someone who could. He opened his mouth to snarl an offer, jangling coins for emphasis, to beg Lakia: how much could Delta be worth, broken? He’d take her. Right now. And go, too.

Then, as if there wasn’t enough to break his resolve completely, wasn’t enough blood, wasn’t enough chaos, Lakia’s tension, her accusations, whatever hurt inside of her bubbling forth in her actions in the time it took him to blink—

Varn shot first.

The tall Biqaj stood still. He couldn’t even breathe. His combat experience was limited to bar fights and self-preservation, it was true, but he’d never been in a situation where the sides were even more unclear than a tavern full of drunks, where those who were meant to be together had been so torn apart. His eyes were dark, rimmed with gold, and he finally gasped for air as if he truly had been held underwater for too long, exploding in feelings that weren’t his own.

That was it.

That was everything.

This was not at all where or how he wished to die.

Bravado bled out of him like the liquid stardust in his veins and he stared in helpless bewilderment at all that continued to unfold in front of him for what felt like an eternal expanse of time, even if it was only a handful of heartbeats.

No.

There was nothing to fix. Whatever was happening to his body was not worth staying for. Whatever was happening was not worth fighting for, if only because he was even more helpless than he’d ever imagined himself to be.

Nope. No. No way.

“Immortals, have mercy. This place is death.” The warm current of Rakahi was all he managed, tearing his gaze away from Lakia to speak directly to Delta one last time, “I cannot fix you, I have nothing, nothing to offer anyone right now, if ever again … but staying here is wrong. Staying here is going to kill all of us. There is more I’d like out of my life, damn it all, and more you deserve. I’ve only stolen feelings, glances, drinks, and kisses. Useless baubles. A few hearts. I’ve never stolen a person, but we should leave. Now.”

He gave them both a lingering glance, hugging someone else’s bag to his chest with hands that shook with mental agony, fear, and sadness for lack of anything that at all seemed comforting in all of Idalos in this moment.

Then, he tucked his jib and turned to walk away.
OOC
”Aw. Hell nah. There’s shots fired and my brain's goo. NOPE. 200% NO. The party is over and the lights are turned off. DUDES. HOLD THE BOAT. I CHANGED MY MIND. PLEASE. I promise not to touch anything else … for … a little while, anyway. Okay, I can’t promise that but … don’t leave me here.”
Sorry, kids, but this is officially over Pash’s head. I will say he considered kidnapping for a split second. I am happy to address the issues of slavery, thread sharing, Empathy magic, addiction, and even have well-meaning, Ne’Haer ignorant Pash offer to buy Delta’s freedom, but not now. Not for several trials. Not until he’s no longer a man-shaped terrarium. I’d definitely like to deal with it, but Pash is out. OUT. Broken. Spent. Terrified out of his music-loving wits. To stay with crazy people is death and he loves himself far too much to put up with any more madness and danger. I tried. I did. To convince him. OOC, I wanted to stay, but no. It’s just not him. I can’t force what isn’t there. He’s too full of feels, his own and now someone else’s, he cares too much. Nope.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in. PM with questions!

[Moderated Thread] Digging in the ruins: Flora

Pash's reaction to her request shook Lakia and she turned to him slightly. She hadn't been responsible for the original damage done to Delta, but her actions had worsened it, prevented it from healing. She hadn't expected his accusations or his demand that she fix the damage. When Varn reacted, she turned back to him but she was far, far too slow. Her turn put her bow in the path of the arrow, and the bow was far too weak to stop it. The arrow broke the bow and hit Lakia's shoulder causing a cry of pain from the naer as she dropped her bow.

As Varn, Padraig, the slave girl, and Pash left, Lakia dropped to her knees. She had failed utterly, any chance to stop whatever disease Pash had from getting off the island was already gone. The best thing she could do now was get herself and Delta out of there. Reaching up with her free hand, she pulled most of the shaft of the arrow in her shoulder off. She didn't know enough about medicine to know if she'd be better off removing the whole thing or leaving it be. Common sense told her that leaving the shaft to be knocked about by branches would be a bad idea, however, so she knew to remove that.

Her arm was mostly useless, difficult to lift. She'd have to use her other one to help Delta, which would leave her defenseless if something happened on the way back to the boat that had brought them from Almund. "Well, that's what it'll have to be." she said quietly as she walked over to Delta. Wrapping her arm around the biqaj, she hauled her to her feet. "I'm so sorry I got you into this mess, Delta. I'll fix this, somehow. This, you, and me. I'll fix it." she said, only loudly enough that Delta could hear her, talking as they walked. Stopping near her bow, Lakia considered it, considered her actions. A paranoid, raving madwoman with a bow, trying to convince others that they had been targeted. She had believed she was right, but in cold blood, did any of it make sense? She wasn't sure, especially about Yolande, but that she couldn't tell what was just her paranoia bothered her.

Lakia's expression turned grim and she brought her foot down hard on the remains of her bow, breaking it. She would not become her mother. She'd never been a great hunter anyway, so she'd be able to learn a new trade fairly easily. "I'll fix us, Delta. I'll fix us, I promise. You'll be free of the drugs, free of the damage. I'll be whole." she continue to repeat those words as they left the ruins, as if saying it would make it come true. The others were already out of site when they made it out of the ruins. No matter, she hadn't come on their boat anyway. Her and Delta had been on the boat from Almund, none of the other three had been on it that she recalled. "I'll fix us. I'll fix us." she said, over and over as she helped Delta get back to the boat.

Tears filled the slaves eyes as Lakia’s friend, in whose eyes she thought she saw disappointment, turned and, slave in tow, left. Delta’s gaze fell back to the floor as the world spun on its axis and a ringing filled her ears. The air suddenly felt much thicker, much heavier. Maybe the Naerikk mantra was right about her after all.

Delta was only vaguely aware of Pash’s apologetic words to her, though she registered the kindness of his voice. The foreign words sounded harsher, but Delta did not bother to check who he was speaking to, merely tuning them out. She heard Lakia’s anger and she felt someone fall to the ground and indistinguishable amount of time after. Bits, breaks, trills - it could have been any of them Trials? Delta was suffocating. Was it possible for someone to last for trials with this turmoil raging inside them?

Then the biqaj felt an arm reach around her. The ringing grew louder before stopping altogether and Delta returned to the present. Lakia kept repeating herself. Fix. Fix. Fix. As Delta was hauled to her feet and gently tugged forward, her feet started moving, on in front of the other. Much like the words echoed from her Mistress’ mouth, Delta heard the words replaying over and over in her mind. Slowly, she came to understand what the word ‘fix’ meant. Lakia thought she could make things better. She thought she could make things right.

Delta blinked back the tears, trying again to clear her blurred vision. But for each tear that fell, more appeared. Her choked sobs were now little more than occasional hiccups. Her breathing had calmed, her heart rate gently slowing down. The constantly moving landscape reminded Delta that they were moving. The hand remained around her arm, guiding her forward, always guided by Lakia. The bobbing told her that she was not being carried. With a detached, vague interest, she realised that she could barely feel her legs. Was she moving them herself?

the pair shuffled along slowly. For whatever reason, Lakia was in no rush to hurry her companion along faster. Delta didn’t know where they were going, but she trusted that Lakia did. Home, maybe? She didn’t ask. She didn’t care. The heaviness of the air seemed to be blown away by the warm, light Ymiden breeze. Delta surfaced as the churning in her stomach began to settle. But it was short-lived as the gravity of what she had just done descended upon her.

Someone had almost been killed. By her. She trusted Lakia… but no one could fix this.

Lakia

Overview

Well, this thread went darker places than I thought it would! Lakia seems to have made a transition, which I started to see during the Ice Caves. She has grown in confidence whilst also growing in her tendency to act in the moment. You write that really, really well and her strange, staccato way of being here was great! I look forward to seeing where you take her.

Overview

Overstepping in the way that Pash did was really intriguing for me to write and I hope you enjoyed the consequences of it. I love how you write Empathy and how well you play to Pash’s skill level – the touch-fest was chuckle provoking, I have to say. Separated from his friends and facing stuff he really didn’t understand or like has at least lead to an increased understanding of how his magic works. Looking forward to seeing what other trouble he gets into.

Injuries

When the Moseke’s Moss finally drops off, Pash has a very feint scar on his arm. It is like a very light metallic green outline of parts of a handprint. Like the green has mixed with his silver blood.
The scar itself itches whenever Pash feels intense, especially negative emotions. He will discover that the skin there is particularly thin and prone to bleeding more easily. Conversely, he has developed a resistance to common herbal poisons.
