The very error of the moons

Pash may have agreed that Kali’rial hadn’t lived, but it was for different reasons. She was alive and breathing, but the walls of her defenses were so high and so thick, that it was a wonder to him how so much light had gotten in. Underneath the fearful, overcautious dourness of so much unspoken hurt was a very bold, feisty woman. He had seen her, more than once, and yet she was elusive. What glimpses he had seen were like the ancient wonders of the Immortal’s Tongue or the incomparable beauty of living creatures in the Scalroth Jungle—lovely and unique.

This was why. Ah, to change it all, to help her be free of this literal, bloody mess.

“You did live.” He replied softly at her objection, not glancing at her right away as he kept his hardened blue gaze on the creature, “You jus’ didn’t know ’t. Maybe now you can see.”

Kali looked up at him, quietly thanking him for he didn’t know what. He’d just said what he felt was obvious, what he figured anyone with half a brain and at least one eye could see—anyone, except for her. She had felt warm in his arms, a hot brand of existence that had somehow swiftly blazed a mark inside the hull of his chest, but even as she pulled away to hold his hand, the warmth she radiated lingered between them. She turned to the gory beast and yelled. She shouted no with all of her very being at the bloody creature of her nightmares, the terrifying anchor that had held her at bay for so long.

Pash smiled, strangely enough, at the fiery outburst of defiance and change.

Everything began to unravel: the beast glared at them and fled, chased away by sound and people. The dark-haired Sev’ryn turned toward him, but she looked past him. He heard, but only faintly—
—His name, said in fear, woke him, Kali’rial reaching for him in the half light breaks before dawn. His sloop and the familiar sounds of water and the docks filled his consciousness, washing away the forest and the bloody scene he’d been witness to in his dream. Slowly coalescing into wakefulness, Pash rolled towards the lithe huntress who had taken rather kindly to sharing his bed. She’d sat up but he simply curled in her direction, arms moving to touch her, warm hands seeking to wrap around what he could grasp,

“Aye, still here—’m here.” The seafaring musician mostly mumbled, his sleepy voice far deeper than when fully awake, though his tone felt distant, still wrapped in a bit of dreamscape. Where would he be going at this break? Where had he been? The dark-haired Sev’ryn’s body was comfortable and real, and while he could swear he’d just been holding her, it was an odd feeling to wake and find he was not, “Jus’ had th’ wildest dream, though. Y’ a’right?”

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in. Grasping one of the bards hands as he found her in the dark, the Sev'ryn felt the panic wash from her like running water, taking a moment to just sit in the tossed sheets and allow her thoughts to come back together. His voice was mumbled, but not muffled, not like it had been just trills before. The brunette remembered things vividly, like someone had pulled a blindfold off her eyes. Not so much the full dream, but the important things. The teeth and the terror, the sounds and smells. Her parents, faces that had been so clear in her dream now slightly blurred. She could remember now though, what she'd never really forgotten.

"I had a dream too...I thought it was a nightmare...but I think...it was something else." Kali's voice shook slightly, as images she didn't really want to remember burned into her mind. Frowning, the brunette took a breath to try and calm her still thumping heart.

"I've had the same dream before, for years. I'm in Desnind, and I see my parents wagon...only it's bigger. I always go inside and after that I can never remember, but I know that I usually wake up tired and terrified." Bringing her knees to her chest, the huntress hugged them with her free arm, unwilling to let go of Pash's hand. His warmth was a reminder of how the seafaring minstrel had appeared in her dream, and how he'd been a shelter in a storm of horrors.

"This time it was different...Immortals I don't know...I can remember things but...I don't want to." Closing her eyes in the dark, the Sev'ryn sighed and shook her head as tears welled in her eyes. She moved her hand from her knees to run it through her hair.

"It was awful, Pash. I think I saw...I saw my parents? Something else too. Something...monstrous." Kali whispered then, resting her elbow on her knee and keeping her hand buried in her dark hair, gripping it tightly as though to remind herself she was awake. Opening her eyes again, the Sev'ryn glanced at his form, dark on dark.

"I dreamed you were there too and you'd somehow gotten to Desnind. You were...you helped me? Told me I wasn't alone. We could face..it..together." She smiled briefly, before letting go of his hand and her hair to cover her eyes with a broken sigh.

"Thing is, I don't think it was all a dream Pash. I think some of it was memories, from a long time ago. I've never seen anything like it before, and my...parents. Immortals...I remember her face. Why didn't they tell me? Why didn't anyone just tell me?" The young woman broke down, openly weeping with shock and grief from wounds freshly opened after years, never really being closed in the first place but just covered by her grandparents coping mechanisms and the wonderous workings of a child's mind to make the unbelievable just that - a buried, intangible nightmare.

Kali felt betrayed too, as though the years of terrifying nightmares and stern upbringing were all torment for nothing. Had they just told her what happened, helped her grieve with them, then perhaps her life with her grandparents could have been different. Her life could have been different. Hands balling and drawn to her chest Kali cried heavily, too angry and hurt to be embarrassed by her current company.

The very error of the moons

“Aye, we dreamed th’ same.” Pash found admitting that strange but not outside the realm of what he believed possible, given magic and Immortals were just part of their acceptable reality already. Sharing dreams? Why not? He sat up with reluctance, if only because he wasn’t quite ready to be more awake, not because he had no desire to comfort the Sev’ryn huntress as she came to terms with what was reality and what was fantasy, what was dream and what was memory, “I was there.”

He moved to hold her with both arms, warm and somewhat clumsy around her in his sleepiness, his cheek against her hair. The tall Biqaj felt her body tense for a moment, listening to her words of confusion before she began to sob, and while he had things he could have said, he waited and simply made sure he held her tightly through her wave of sadness. It had been a horrific scene and the creature was, indeed, terrifying. How much of it had been real and how much of it had been twisted by the mind of a child who could never have been prepared for such a massacre? For witnessing the terrible deaths of her own parents?

“Kali, your grandparents, they lost a child, too. Two, through th’ union, eh? They had grief, sadness, fear, jus’ like you. But they had y’ left, an’ they loved you. They wanted t’ protect y’ from what had happened, they wanted t’ make sure that y’ lived, that they didn’t fail t’ keep y’ safe lest they lose you, too.”

In saying those words, Pash understood them, the elders who raised the dark-haired Sev’ryn to be the way she was. He understood the fear of losing someone, in his own way, and so in the trills after he gave his words to her, he sighed, the baritone of his voice hushed but heavy,

“Sometimes, m’haps, y’ can protect somethin’ too much. Like m’ heart from you, so, too, did your grandparents think they were doin’ what were right. They didn’t know any better. They just … wanted y’ safe because you’re all they had left.”

Pash let his lips brush her hair, closing his eyes in the familiar near darkness of his sloop’s cabin breaks before dawn, “How would you tell anyone ‘bout what happened, let alone a child? ‘Bout that creature ‘r all those dead folks? ‘Bout your parents? They were afraid, I’m sure, an’ it hurt. It must still ache—“

Kali had some right to be angry, to have lived her life thinking some stupid, mortal mistake had killed her parents instead of some twisted, magical beast, to have been taught to live a certain way in order to protect herself from all the wrong things. Those were, most definitely, two totally different scenarios in the Biqaj’s mind, but in his heart of hearts, he understood why one story had become favorable to the other and how easy it was to cling to the lie in order to safeguard the truth,

“—Forgive them, jus’ like you’ve forgiven me. An’ your’e no’ alone. Whatever’s next, I’m still here t’ face it with you.”

Pash, we were just talking about how weird, yet awesome, dreams are xD and this is definitely both those things! Sitting here reading this like "wait, what?"
I feel for Kali here... she seems so vulnerable. And Pash - I need a man like Pash in my life!
