25th Ashan, 705, Evening

It was evening, later than usual for Kali'rial. Most nights she was in her bedroll as soon as the sun set yet still light, early to bed and early to rise as Nonna would say. Tonight though, the hunt had run late, and so her grandparents had kept her up later to help finish off stretching and scraping the hide they'd collected before salting them for the ride across the ocean back to Desnind. They'd camped just outside the Gunvorton commons, in a familiar clearing that was often graced by travelling merchants.

As the firelight crackled before her, the young brunette scraped the soft rabbit hide staked out before her, using the back of her hand to wipe a stray hair from her face. Beside her, Dyn'rial and Xan'neua both worked on their own skins, whilst other traders sat talking and laughing at the main gathering a little further away. The Sevir looked up at the others with a smile as one of the older boys jumped up and ran to hide amongst the wagons circling the perimeter of the clearing, a couple of younger children laughing and running to chase him.

"Poppa, if I finish the rest of these hides, can I-" Her question was cut short by Xan'neua's sharp tongue.

"What have we told you before Kali?" The girl blushed, bowing her head in respect and talking in a low voice.

"Xanthean in Desnind, Common on the road." Lifting her head again, the blue eyed girl looked at her grandmother with a hopeful gaze.

"Can I go and play if I finish the rest of these quickly?" The older woman sighed heavily and paused her own work, giving Dyn'rial a look that silently said 'help me here', before putting a hand on Kali'rial's shoulder.

"What happens if I let you go play chasing with those boys? It's dark already, and you can't see your hand in front of your face behind those wagons. It would take but a moment for something to come up and snatch you away, and we wouldn't even know until it was too late." Dyn'rial grunted in affirmation, giving the youngster a stern look with a raised brow.

"Whilst those youngsters waste time running around like headless chickens, you will be learning better ways to tan these hides so you're able to earn better nel." The brunette opened her mouth to protest, to which the man raise a finger to silence her.

"Do not question us Kali'rial, that's final. Now pick up your scraper and finish your job." Closing her mouth tightly with tears of frustration stinging her eyes, the youngster picked up her tool and did as she was told. Over the brunette's head, the two elders looked at each other with furrowed brows, before quietly turning to their own tasks.

It was later that evening when Kali'rial snuck out of her sleeping roll, quietly as she could as not to wake her grandparents. The other children were still up, not quite ready for bed, playing a game of 'would you ever'. Listening silently from beside their wagon, the young budding huntress suppressed a few giggles as the youths came up with the most ridiculous things they could think of.

"Would you ever...mmm...ride a hafrein. Backwards. Wearing no clothes." Laughter erupted from the little group, before the next one was thought of. Kali crept closer, watching her step to avoid being noticed. Unfortunately she wasn't as stealthy as planned, knocking over a stray tea can in the dark. The group of children squealed, before the older boy from earlier jumped up.

"Who's there?!" He spoke in a voice that was trying to be deeper than it really was. Kali felt her heart in her throat as she stepped into the light.

"Sorry, I didn't...I mean sorry. I could hear you and...my name is Kali'rial." The group stared at her, before looking back at the older boy. He seemed to weigh up her worth, before grinning.

"Kali'rial. Nice. Would you ever...hrm...eat aye-aye eyeball soup?" The group broke into laughter again, Kali included. She scrunched up her nose in disgust with a giggle.

"Gross! Um...would you ever...wear your pants on your head whilst making a trade!" All the kids burst out laughing again, and Kali moved to sit with them, a wide grin on her face.

----

As the night wore on, the little group of happenstance friends laughed and talked, not noticing the figure that had come up beside them.

"Kali'rial, what in Moseke's name do you think you're doing?" A hard clipped woman's voice snapped out of the darkness. The children screamed, and Kali felt her stomach sink. Leaping to her feet, she stared at her Nonna in horror.

"Nonna! I'm..er...I just..." Some of the other adults had come from their own wagons to see what the fuss was about. Xan'neua ignored them all, steely green eyes fixed on her grand daughter.

"You were just disobeying your Elders, not to mention sitting away from camp with people you don't even know and not a single weapon with you! What did I tell you before? About how dangerous this is?!" One of the other merchants shrugged and chuckled at the woman.

"Hey, she's just a kid. Lenwyn here is old enough to take care of this lot, they're fine." Xan'neua glared at the man.

"You look after your young ones, and I'll look after mine." Pointing at Kali, she beckoned.

"With me. Now." Wide eyed the brunette scrambled to follow her Nonna, heart thumping in her chest, knowing full well the tirade she was about to receive.

"Nonna I'm sorry. I promise I won't do it again! I'll finish all the hides by myself tomorrow." Xan'neua didn't speak as they headed back to the wagon and inside, where Dyn'rial paced. He turned on the girl with angry eyes, a look of worry behind them.

"What in all the Immortal's names do you think you were doing?!" He said with a deep frown, bringing the youngster to tears in an instant. Dropping to one knee he gripped her shoulders and looked at her.

"This is why we don't let our emotions break our focus Kali. When we do, we get distracted and do things like disobey our elders. Anything could have happened to you, understand? You must never get distracted Kali'rial. Ever."

Zi'da 8th, 711, Midday

Breath frosting in the chill air, Kali'rial focused on the target in front of her, pulling an arrow from her quiver and nocking it with slightly trembling fingers. As she lifted the bow and drew back on the string, the young huntress hissed and released the shot, her arrow flying off course to land in the dirt beside the hay bale she'd aimed for.

"Again Kali. Draw and fire again." Flexing her fingers and breathing on them to warm the digits up, the brunette looked at her Poppa with a hesitant nod. They'd been practicing for breaks in the bitter cold of the Scalvoris Grasslands, and the tanned teenager's fingers were burning from each shot. Obediently however, she drew another arrow and aimed. This shot was worse than the first, her fingers slipping and the arrow clattering to the frozen ground under her feet.

"Poppa please, can we stop? My fingers are so cold they hurt." Dyn'rial frowned deeply and gave her a hard look.

"One day you'll thank me for this Kali. Focus on the target, not the pain. Imagine your pain as something you can float downstream for later. The target, the hunt, demands your whole attention. Breathe deeply Kali'rial and focus." Turning away from the elderly man, the Sev'ryn took a deep breath in through her nose, before releasing it steadily out of her mouth. Taking another arrow, she breathed as she nocked the bow, releasing on the exhale. Her shot flew true, embedding off centre but at least in the target. Beaming, she turned to Dyn'rial only to look sheepishly at her feet when he simply fixated her with a frown.

"Again."

--------

"If we move further up the coast, we might make the deer run." Xan'neua said to her husband and grand daughter as they huddled close to the fire. Dyn'rial nodded, before packing up the map and stretching.

"We will take the trail tonight, when the beasts come out to graze. Easy, quick and safe. Kali'rial, gather the bedrolls and put them away." The brunette teen nodded, jumping up and moving to do as he asked. Her fingers were bandaged and stiff, and her arms felt like they might fall off. Dyn'rial had made her practice till the sun had lowered, and everything hurt. But he did it to make her tougher, stronger. To teach her how to focus when the pain and aches set it. Kali knew that, she knew.

Still, it would be good to have a little sympathy.

Lifting the sleeping rolls and putting them in the back of the wagon, the sound of rustling grass caught her ear behind her. Turning, hunting knife fumbled from her belt to her hand, the young southerner stared at a man before her. He was perhaps in his twenty something arcs, taller than her - then everyone seemed to be - and decorated with a dreadlocked mop of brown hair. He grinned at her warmly.

"Kali'rial? Right? Nice." The Sev'ryn frowned, looking him over with a confused expression. The man chuckled, shaking his head.

"You won't remember me, but I remember you. It's Lenwyn." Kali raised an eyebrow, still not recalling him. Rubbing the back of his neck, Lenwyn grinned.

"Would you ever...take an evening stroll with a stranger?" Kali'rial's periwinkle eyes widened for a moment, before she blushed and put away the knife.

"I remember. Well met Lenwyn. It's been a while." Nodding politely, she turned back to the wagon to finish tying off the sleeping rolls. Behind her, Lenwyn made a wry smile and mouthed the word 'ouch' at the sting of her complete disregard for his sneaky suggestion.

"Not really Kali. We've been in the same camps on and off for arcs. I've seen you, we've all seen you. But you don't see us anymore." Sighing, Kali took a deep breath before exhaling slowly. And again. She'd seen them, heard them playing and laughing. She'd watched them growing up and drinking, making friendships and more.

It was all just distractions though. Eventually, she'd closed off any longing for joining them, and in turn had become unable to even begin to interact again. The anxiety of disappointing her grandparents again burned in her chest.

"Well, thank you for introducing yourself. Again." She turned and nodded to him respectfully, before moving to make her way back to her Nonna and Poppa. Lenwyn shifted, holding his hands up before him and blocking her path.

"You know you don't have to do what they tell you right? Come for a walk." He tried to reach for her hand, however the young woman pulled back with a deeper frown of anger. Now she smelt it, the foul reek of alcohol on his person.

"Yes, I do. They are my Elders and my grandparents. I must follow their words, and their teachings." Lenwyn rolled his eyes, before moving closer to her. The brunette took a step back, blue eyes blazing as he tried to take her hand again.

"If I could just get you to come with me, you'd see that-" Kali'rial pushed his hand away and set her jaw, staring up at him in defiance.

"Good night, Lenwyn." She said firmly, turning on her heel to go around the other side of the wagon, heart pounding slightly in her chest. The brown haired man moved again, this time to grab her arm as he slipped around in front of her. Kali tugged away, pushing his chest uselessly. The man was drunk, and determined.

"I don't want to hurt you Kali, I just want to help you. We could just go-"

Whack!

Lenwyn fell back on his rump hard, hold a hand to his jaw where her fist had landed. The young huntress looked down at him, chin held high and face calm.

"You're fucking crazy. Just like them." The man spat, stumbling to his feet and shaking his head.

"Enjoy your night Kali." He growled, before stalking off to join the rest of the campers further off at the main fire. The brunette watched him go, hearing a peel of laughter from his companions. Clearly he'd either been dared to approach her, or had been told that it was a stupid idea. Either way, she was obviously the butt of that laughter. Turning back to the wagon, Kali'rial closed her eyes to breathe. In and out. And again. And again. She wanted to cry, to go over and yell at them all. Let her emotions get the better of her.

No. She wouldn't do that. Focus. Discipline.

Opening them, the young woman returned to her grandparents. Dyn'rial looked at her silently for a while, before he simply nodded, as though he was acknowledging she'd done the right thing. Xan'neua touched her shoulder, looking into the younger girls blue eyes with a serious face.

"Let's go."
