Standing alone on the deck of her father's ship, Vega continued to practice the movements and breathing he had taught her. It was amazing how calming it was, the feeling of focused gentle movements used as a meditative tool. She had never quite managed to meditate this well before, although she had always needed to have time, each trial, where she was alone and quiet and with her own thoughts. But as she felt her body relax, the calm in her core something she was finally starting to tap into, Vega opened her eyes. Her irises were deep brown, flecked with gold and she was moving her hands to in front of her, right one in front of the left, elbows bent and palms open, facing each other.

As she did that, Vega concentrated not on the movements but on moving. On the feeling of her body, of the heat at her heart and her core. Each movement became part of the whole, part of her. With each in breath, she felt herself pull in calmness, with each out breath she released previously held aggression, confusion, tension. It seemed very straightforward, to say that, but Vega was learning that there was nothing simple about it. The breathing she had practiced was key to this and she was just starting to consider the depth and complexity of what she was doing.

And there, in front of her, Vega saw her. Just a fleeting moment, maybe even her imagination, but there she was. Two things, neither of them fitting, but yet put together to make something else. The creature in the periphery of Vega's vision, just for a trill, was a multicoloured creature, like Vega's eyes her familiar had a range of colours. At first glance, it seemed to be a bird maybe. A bird of paradise with bright plumage, but it was obviously a rabbit. Or, more precisely, a Scalvoris flunny with wings for ears and on the body where the wings would be if it was a bird. In the brief glance she got of it, she could see that it was all feathered but with tufts of fur poking out here and there, the back legs were rainbow-feather rabbit legs, front legs much more tufty fur, but with feathers too. It was possibly the strangest looking thing that Vega had ever seen but, at the same time, as the vision flashed in front of her, she felt a draw to it. Like her soul was hurting, she supposed.

She blinked and it was gone, the vision which had pulled her to it. It wasn't here, but it was close. Very close. She could feel it, that pull was almost physical to her and Vega closed her eyes and focused on her breathing, aware that it had quickened in the moment. Yet she was sure, more sure than before that this meant, simply, that her familiar was here, on Scalvoris.

"What is it, Eva?"

Jo'qan, Vega's father, was standing on the deck and watching her. Vega turned to look at him and smiled; the only person alive who called her by her true and given name. "I saw her, Papa," Vega motioned to where she had seen what she had. "My familiar. I saw her." Jo'qan nodded his head, looking at his daughter and wondering, again, how and when she had grown up. Surely, he thought, she was still ten arcs old, fierce and fearless, willing to fight anything and angry at the world? Somehow, though he had not realised it at the time, that had been easier.

"Your mother's was a bird." Jo'qan said and Vega looked at him in surprise. He chuckled at that expression. "Do you keep secrets from that boy of yours? Or do you tell him everything?" Vega raised an eyebrow, well aware that there was the correct answer and then there was the truth. "Well, if I'm 'onest, I probably would 'ave to go with keeping secrets from him." Jo'qan looked at her and his disapproval was obvious. "That is no way to have a relationship, Eva. There should be nothing but truth between you." Vega rolled her eyes and Jo'qan said no more on that topic, choosing instead to take another tactic. "You seemed surprised that I know what your mother's familiar was. We had no secrets between us."

Vega nodded, not quite sure what to say and then, in fairly typical fashion for her, she blurted out what she felt. "Well that must 'ave been bloody nice. Don't go gettin' all 'igh an' mighty with me, I don't know anythin' about 'er cos you won't tell me." Jo'qan looked at her with some surprise and then sighed. Her delivery was reassuringly poor, but her point was fair. "So, no, I'm not surprised that you know. You know all about 'er, but I'm surprised you're telling me." Vega was surprised, it must be said. She hadn't heard him speak about her mother, except for just lately. Jo'qan motioned for her to move and sit with him, there on the deck as the snow fell around them.

"I'm sorry, Papa. I shouldn't lose my temper." It was typical of her, Vega flared in temper and then calmed as quickly. Jo'qan smiled a slight, amused smile and he shook his head. "You have your mother's temper, Eva." Vega looked at him in surprise as the pair of them sat, backs against the side of the ship, side by side where he had urged her to rest with him. Vega pulled her knees up and rested her hands on them as she tried not to ask. As a child, asking anything about her mother provoked a response of silence from her father; she didn't quite know how to handle him when he was talking about his wife so Vega made the decision to do something very unusual and she kept quiet.

"Her sister has hair like yours, but it is your mother whose temper resides behind your eyes, Eva. What I saw between you and Arlo in your camp, that could have been her and I." Vega looked at him and a frown settled on her face. "I've never 'ad so many feelin's Papa, an' I can't hold them. An' when he does somethin' that 'urts me, I could just." Jo'qan smiled and leaned over to kiss his daughter on the top of her forehead. "I know, Eva. She was the same with me and I with her."

Vega looked at him and a hesitant smile lit her face. "Really? I mean, Arlo's much calmer than me, he's much more rational." Jo'qan chuckled and shook his head. "Your mother used to say the same about me, but it was not true. She was the most frustrating woman in the world." He said nothing about the pot-kicking or pure frustration he had seen on Arlo's face when he was in their camp the few trials prior. That was his business and Jo'qan would not share it. Looking at his daughter, the biq'aj man reached over and put her hair behind her ear, then looked critically at her face. The bruises were still very evident, from where she had fought with her cousin.

"I'm sorry he called you that, Eva. It is not true, you know." Jo'qan had been horrified when he heard that his nephew had called her a whore, but of all things, Vega smiled slightly. "I know. Or, at least, I've thought about it, Papa. As far as Reese is concerned, he's right, isn't he? I mean, I should find a biq'aj who is prepared to ignore 'alf of me." Vega shrugged slightly and shook her head. "I should feel sorry or 'im. I mean, I don't, I wanna pound 'is stupid face into the deck," Jo'qan looked at her and it was a hard job not to show his amusement at her words. "But he's a bigot an' an idiot an' you know, you're 'appy with my choices, an' I'm more than 'appy." It was true and her father knew it. "For whatever weird reason, Arlo's masochistic enough that he 'asn't run off," unless the U'frek thing was an elaborate lie, she thought with a slight smile. "My worry is you, Papa. If he pushes it..."

With a sudden realisation of what she was concerned about, Jo'qan looked at Vega with an incredulous expression. "Eva, I am not concerned. Not least, because I am the head of this family and if he wishes to make a fuss, then he is welcome to leave. No one will force you from this family, my daughter, nor will they force me." She was worried for him, Jo'qan recognised and he shook his head. "Reese will leave the family a dozen times before you do, little bird." Vega said nothing, because she couldn't speak exactly without having an emotion and so, she rested her head on her father's shoulder and smiled. Relief, she thought. It was relief that she was feeling coursing through her.

Overview

Lovely sequel to the Eggs & Training thread. The meditative immersion in the combat tecnique is spot on and the interaction between father and daughter is so heartfelt. Love without big words. Exquisite. I’m also curious what the vision meant and what the familiar will turn out to be. I’ll have to stalk your threads.
