50th Trial of Zi'da,
Arc 716
Vega was still on the first glass and seemed to be developing a backlog. She was used to drinking, but she was used to drinking slowly and as Arlo drained his second glass, she grinned. "If I end up puttin' you to bed dead drunk, yer sleepin' in the bath." She didn't mind the dead drunk in the slightest, but she wasn't wasting a perfectly wonderful bed on someone who couldn't appreciate it, and she told him so quite clearly. Dead drunk was fine, he just wasn't doing it in the first bed she'd slept in for an arc. Then, though, when he explained what a trinket wife was like, Vega listened and nodded, apparently seriously. "Yeah, see? Jus' like me. Seen, not 'eard. Never got opinions and even on those rare moments where I do, I never say 'em. An' disagree with you? Me? I can't imagine it, can you?" Her eyes were twinkling as she considered it. "You wouldn't know what to do with me, an' you'd spend yer time tryin' to work out who I was, an' what I'd done with the real me." In truth, he'd be right to.

The fish was like nothing she'd ever tasted, and she told him so. He wasn't paying attention, though, he was staring off to the empty table next to them, behind her. Vega had her back to it, but looking in the window she could see the reflection and there was no one sitting there. Yet, Arlo smiled and was staring. That gave her an opportunity and she moved her glass of water, giving herself a clear trajectory, then swiped a piece of his fish, quite content to accept the 'you snooze, you loose' school of fish-stealing.

But then, he purposely set his finger on fire and Vega told him to stop but he didn't listen. "What do you mean, you can't? It's your finger, stop it!" Vega's voice was a low whisper and then she frowned as he put his finger in her water, moved there in order to facilitate her fish-stealing in fairness. "Gerroff my water, stick yer finger in your own drink." She picked up her napkin and dropped it on his hand, but nothing stopped it.

"Who?" Vega said and first looked in the reflection in the window and then turned around, again, to look at where he meant. "That group of four? Think they're 'ere for that kid's birthday? Maybe it's a trick. Want me to go thump the kid till they stop?" She was entirely serious, although she looked at him with a look which suggested that perhaps he was going mad. "I mean, 'ow do you know it's them?" The group of four in question were two tables away and didn't really seem to be involved.

The waiter glanced over, checking that everything was alright, since there seemed to be a commotion. Thank Xiur he hadn't noticed Arlo's flaming finger, Vega thought and she smiled at him. Then she turned back to Arlo. "You know, I don't know but maybe put it in yer mouth? Then, if you close your mouth around it, then yer cuttin' off the air an' that kills a fire. It don't burn. If it burns you, don't do it." The elderly couple who Vega evidently didn't see were still pointing and the lady of the pair was waving.

The thing was, to Arlo, they looked entirely solid and normal. How Vega couldn't see them must seem like a mystery until they stood up and walked towards the young couple. Now that, in and of itself was fine, but people didn't usually walk through the table, so much as around it. So, of course, because it was them on their first date Arlo found himself in the most expensive restaurant on Scalvoris, perhaps for quite a bit further than that, sitting across from his girlfriend who had stolen a fair portion of his dish as two ghosts walked up to them and, completely unknown to Vega, the older man said, "I wonder, may we join you? Lovely young couple." Hopefully Arlo said yes because they were sitting at the table with the two of them as Arlo blinked.

Oh, and his finger was still, very much, on fire. Vega looked at him like his head was spinning around on the spot and then she grinned. The older woman was examining a strand of Vega's hair, not that the redhead had any idea, nor could she hear the "oh, it is beautiful. Soft too." Vega's grin, though, was entirely genuine as she asked "Arlo, wot in the name of Xiur's perky nips is goin' on?" Three pairs of eyes, two dead and one very much alive looked at him.

He wouldn't be stumbling out of the place drunk off his heels, Arlo had promised Vega. And he wouldn't be sleeping in the tub the night through either. He could get drunk any old time. How often was it that they hired a fancy room with an over sized feather bed for the night? He had plans. Not that they needed the luxurious surroundings at all to hold their interest, one with the other. They did more than well enough without all the trappings. Cally's wasn't the best sort of place to point that out however. His expression would tell her all she needed to know.

But then his finger caught flame and the rest was temporarily forgotten. Her glass was closest and his finger was on fire. He'd have wondered aloud, if all of him was on fire would she split hairs, was it her bucket of water or his? He didn't notice her swiping the fish off his plate. It was the last thing on Arlo's mind. "I mean I can't stop it," he repeated in a whisper across the table while trying to snuff out his finger with a napkin wrapped around it. It neither worked, or caught the fabric itself alight. "It's never done it before."

As for who, he shook his head. "No, not those four. Them," he insisted while the couple in question kept watching, smiling, waving. Didn't she see that? By the time Paul approached again, Arlo had flatly refused to put the offending finger in his mouth, and in fact hid his hand under the table to hide it from view. He looked again after the man was gone, and yes, still lit and yet not burning.

It was only when the couple got up and walked straight through their own table that it dawned on him what he was seeing. The question was, why was he seeing them and not Vega? He dared another glance below the table and frowned, missing their request to sit. Didn't seem to matter, they sat anyway. And how was Vega remaining ignorant of that woman toying with her hair? "How is it I'm seeing you, but not anyone else?" he whispered to the pair, then looked at Vega. "Ghosts," he figured, under breath. "Don't freak out or look obvious about it. Play it cool. They seem friendly," he said, then told her that the pair had joined them at their table.

50th Trial of Zi'da,
Arc 716
"Depends on if I was plannin' on drinkin' out of my bucket," she shot back, quick smart. She was unnerved by the finger of flame thing he had going on, but in truth, he'd started spontaneously glowing at least twice now, so that he was just weird and did stuff like that was starting to be something she accepted. "What's my Papa gonna say if I 'ave to tell 'im you've got a finger on fire an' can't switch it off?" Even as she whispered the question, she realised that perhaps what her father was going to say or think wasn't high on Arlo's agenda right now, but there it was she'd said it. Her eyes, though, betrayed her emotions as always and were a deep vivid purple; she was worried and concerned for him. "You don't feel weird or anythin' do you? Yer alright in yourself?" Her worry was evident on her face and the frown she wore.

"Who?" she hissed back to him when he insisted, them and Vega shook her head. "Arlo there's no one there. Yer imaginin' people an' yer finger's on fire." Her gaze on him was concerned, worried, flustered and all of them mixed together. But he was insistent, there was a couple there, he said, sitting right at that table. "I don't see them." Vega said and then, of course, Paul came. She smiled, complimented the chef on the fish, said "It's right lovely. Thanks, really." Then when he went, finally, she turned back to Arlo. "This is all your fault, I wasn't gonna talk to 'im so you could pretend yer girlfriend was posh, too. Bloody stupid finger." Shrugging slightly, she was entirely genuine when she said, "Sorry." She really should learn to speak properly, she considered. But she looked at him with concern for him outweighing anything else.

"What?" Vega asked as he said he was seeing her, but not anyone else. "Yer not seein' anyone else now? Not even the waiter?" But then, he seemed to be talking to her shoulder, not her and Vega looked at him with a look of utter confusion on her face.

And then he turned to look at her. Vega had to admit that she was rather relieved that he didn't have a twitch in his eye or a tic or some such. Ghosts? "Are you 'avin' a giraffe?" Vega asked and Paul, who was close enough that her heard that exclamation, came over and said. "I'm sorry, miss, no, we don't have giraffe on the menu. Would you like me to ask Faith if...?" Vega shook her head and smiled at him, trying her best to look like she was joking. As she did she took off her shoe (because keeping it on would be mean) under the table and kicked Arlo.

But no, he wasn't "having a giraffe" and Vega looked at him with a swirling mass of colour in her eyes. "Ghosts?" she whispered. "Freak out? Why would I? Play i' cool? I'm so cool you could store yer side of lamb in me for a ten-trial. I mean, what's not to be cool about?" The ghosts in question looked around and both smiled. The woman, who seemed to have at least finished with Vega's hair, turned to Arlo.

"We come here every night. The nice lady sees us and chats with us. The owner. But she's here less these trials. In the family way, you know. You two are a very lovely couple. What are your names?" The woman looked up and beamed at him. She had incredibly bright blue eyes. "My name is Pilar. This is my husband, Waldo," she said and she smiled. "I used to have hair just like this, didn't I?" Waldo nodded his head and the ghosts held hands in the middle of the table. Actually, in the middle of Vega's plate, but she didn't seem to notice.

"Arlo, are you tellin' me, really now," she was building up a head of steam, there was no doubting it. "I locked myself in the bathroom, an' squeezed myself into a corset thingie that's all satin an' lace an' does this to me," she gestured to her chest area, her brow furrowing in displeasure as she continued, " an' then I did my 'air an' make up. I'm wearin' stockin's, Arlo. With lace an' silk, an' these suspender things. All of my underwear is satin," she whispered and Waldo proved that ghosts could blush while Pilar chuckled to herself. "an' it's slippery. I even bought a black satin nightgown. With lace. I did. I planned on not sleepin' all night, I thought the nightgown migh' be nice for a bit of a second wind." No doubting it, he was sleeping in the bath, although her voice did not raise. "an now you, you are tellin' me...." She was about to explode in angry, whispering away, but then suddenly Vega grinned. "that yer response to this is to set yer finger alight an' we're bein' haunted?" Her grin widened and Vega couldn't hold back the chuckle which left her. Drinking the remains of her wine in one go, she looked at him and beamed. "This is the best first date. Only you, Arlo Creede. But whoever they are, an' nice to meet you an' all, but if they're plannin' on anging around all night, you'd better be alrigh' with that, or sort it out."

Of course, Pilar and Waldo watched with interest and Waldo grinned. "She's feisty. Lucky lad." Pilar gave him a companionable, and even familiar-looking, thump on the shoulder. And just at that moment, Paul came to take their plates.

"He'll figure you've found yourself a one of a kind," Arlo shot back when she asked about her father, and his strange and sudden affliction. "He'll value my presence aboard any ship, his or ours, knowing that on the darkest of nights, I can act as a beacon to lead the way, just by raising a finger to the wind." All joking aside however, it unnerved him as much as it did her. He hoped it would stop soon rather than becoming a constant. Something like that was bound to get in the way.

Anything weird, she asked? "You mean aside from the fact that my finger is lit up like a candle and apparently I'd seeing people who aren't there?" he'd asked her, and scowled a little at the absurdity of it all. He was even more unnerved when the couple invited themselves over and took a seat at their table. "Of course I'm seeing the waiter. I'm not blind. He's right there." Ow! he mouthed across the table at her when she kicked him, though even that didn't change what he was seeing. If only it would.

There was no question about it. The pair were ghosts that only he was seeing and hearing. And while a part of him, later, might think that was a fairly neat trick, at the moment and even then he wasn't sure he liked it at all. Faith seemed fine with seeing and interacting with ghosts. It was her thing, but not his. Truth was he'd rather not. But there they were, chatting him up as if it was the most natural thing in the world. "Their names are Pilar and Waldo," he whispered to Vega, after looking at the pair while they introduced themselves. And why shouldn't he translate for her? She thought already that he'd taken leave of his senses.

"This is Vega, I'm Arlo," he said to the pair when they asked, and then awkwardly added, "Nice to meet the two of you. She says she used to have hair like yours." Back to Vega that was. "when she was younger. They're here every night." But then when Vega began to remind him of all the preparations she'd gone through prior to that evening, Arlo both frowned and worried a little. Black satin? Lace? Slippery underthings and suspenders on silk stockings? It was all enough to remind him just how much he didn't want to spend the night sleeping in the bath.

But just when he thought she was going to blow, right there at their fancy table in public, Vega laughed instead. It wasn't expected, and his expression was a confounded one. He'd never quite figure her out. "You're not mad?" Paul was right. He was the lucky one and he grinned just as Paul came back to switch out their plates. And when he was gone, Arlo turned to the couple, determined to translate for Vega whatever they said. "I'm curious, what is it about...this?" he asked, pulling his hand out from under the table just long enough to see that yes, it was still flickering away. "And why do the pair of you hang around instead of, well, instead of being wherever folks like you usually are?"

50th Trial of Zi'da,
Arc 716
She was starting to think that Arlo was going soft in the head. "Then what did you mean when you said you weren't seein' ... 'ang on a bit." Her eyes darkened dangerously and she repeated his words of a moment before. "How is it you're seein' me but no one else? Did you mean.. what did you mean?" He wasn't talking about seeing somebody with his eyes, so there was only one other meaning of 'seeing' that Vega knew of. "Is.. what are you sayin'?" Was he suggesting that they start seeing other people? That was the first rule she'd come up with and he'd said that he thought it was implicit, but maybe he was changing his mind? But then, just when she was about to get genuinely upset, she realised what he was talking about and Vega kicked him again. "You mean the ghosts, don't you?" Her voice was a low hiss. "Why didn't you say that you... you.. Why didn't you say that?" He didn't like it when she called him names in front of people, and she wasn't sure whether ghosts counted, so she decided that it was best not, all things considered. "I thought you were askin' me why you weren't seein' other people. Like, you know." She sighed. This whole relationship thing was very tricky and she really wasn't very good at it, most of the time.

"Pilar and Waldo?" Vega asked and the look on her face was enough, she was half a glass of wine away from a commentary on those names. Something which probably started with ever faithful 'are you 'aving a giraffe' and might actually also include some never-before heard Vega-isms. But hair like hers? "Red? Or long? Or red an' long? What's it like now?" Maybe he should have those exploding fruit caviars any more, she thought. They were making him hallucinate ghosts. It actually made sense ~ she hadn't had as many as him but they were both hallucinating the flaming finger. That must be it. "Maybe the explodin' stuff in the drinks makes you see stuff?" That made sense.

As much as anything did.

In fairness, Vega had lost her temper plenty of times. Probably more than she should have, if she was entirely honest and she knew what losing her temper felt like. It felt like what she was doing. As she explained to him in detail just what she had done and why she had done it, Vega was genuinely angry, or building that way. But then, the more she explained, the more he looked positively pained and the more she thought about it, the funnier it got. So, when she grinned and he looked relieved, confused, confounded and pleased all at once, Vega shook her head. "No, I'm not mad. There's nothin' yer doin' to be mad at, is there? Except 'avin' an adventure an' that's our life, innit?" Paul took the plates away and Vega grinned at Arlo, her foot nudging his leg, much like her shoulder would bump against his were they in a different place. "An' I love our life."

Come to that, she added very calmly, his fish had been particularly good too, she'd loved them. However, Waldo and Pilar smiled at Arlo and it was Pilar who answered. "Well, you see, it's the grandchildren," she said, very clearly. Waldo nodded. "Our daughter was pregnant and, well, we thought we'd just hang about and make sure that she was alright. So we told that nice young chap," Pilar seemed to think that Vri, the Immortal of Death, was a pleasant fellow. "well, thank you but no. Then there was the lady. She was nice. But the birth had been difficult. So, we lost the chance really." They nodded and then Waldo gestured out towards the kitchen. "That nice lady, Faith, she's tried to get us to pass over, but our great-grandaughter, well she's having a baby, so we've agreed to hang around awhile. She'll help us then, so we pop in and see her. She's here tonight, cooking for a friend, she said" They explained that, as their third course arrived, plus of course the drinks, and Vega smiled and thanked Paul. She'd spoken to him now, what was the point of worrying, she figured. Then, as Vega was looking down at the third course, Pilar added. "Oh, and that finger of yours? I'm not sure but when you tapped it against the table, it lit up and you seemed to notice us. Maybe try that?" Vega looked up and raised an eyebrow at him, questioningly. Then, she picked up her glass, offered it to him for a toast. "Here's to never managin' anythin' ordinary, you an' me."

That was never an assumption that she ought to be making, Arlo had told Vega when she'd asked about them seeing other people. It would never happen after all and it would be better for her to assume that he'd taken leave of his senses and was seeing and hearing others that simply weren't there. If it was one or the other, that one was how it would be. Except that in this case he wasn't imagining it. Or at least Arlo didn't think he was. But that was the thing wasn't it, with people who were out of touch with reality. They tended not to know it. He was seeing and hearing the couple. They were there and probably would be, was he not hearing and seeing them. Was this going to keep happening, he wondered? If he was honest, he hoped it wouldn't.

"Pilar and Waldo," he confirmed when she asked. "Her hair she says was like yours once, but they're old," he whispered across the table. "It's long and white now, but still like yours except its not red any longer." He'd thought she'd be angry, that she was angry, and she'd seemed to be heading in that direction. They'd spent enough time together that he recognized the signs. Except that now she wasn't. He grinned a little and shrugged. "I like our life too." And it seemed to be getting more and more interesting with each passing trial.

When the third course came, Arlo fell silent until Paul had come and gone again, before he translated for Vega what the pair was telling him. "They stayed behind when Vri came for them, because of their grandchildren. They said Faith will help them with that later." Arlo wasn't surprised after all to hear that Faith was there that evening. He'd suspected as much, given the nature of the food. He raised his glass to Vega's then and grinned. "To us. And good company too," he said to the mostly unseen pair before taking a sip of his drink and setting it aside. Of course what Pilar had said, trying to explain the reason he saw them, gave him pause.

Could it be that? Had he inadvertently tapped his finger on the surface of the table? If he did it again, would they be gone and out of his sight? "I hadn't thought of that," he admitted. "If I try it and it's the case, then it was nice meeting the two of you," Arlo said, and pulling his hand out from under the table he tapped the offending digit on its surface. And in a blink, the flame was extinguished and..."They're gone," he said to Vega. Or, well, it was just as likely that they were still there and he just didn't hear or see them.

Either way, he whispered to her for different reasons completely. "We've got three more courses. I say we enjoy them and then get ourselves back to our room at the inn." This wasn't the most appropriate setting after all for what had lingered on his mind since she'd first mentioned it. Before the evening was over, Arlo determined he was going to find out just what she meant by slippery silk, lace and stockings.

Hoo boy did I have a great time reading Vega in this thread. She's so hilarious, especially when she's not trying. I love her enthusiasm for all of this, I love the vulnerability she showed early in. Well done, extremely entertaining.
