"Whadaya think he's up to?"

"Dunno. Dun' wanna, ee-vuh."

Kasoria didn't smirk as he walked out the store. Not on the outside, anyway. He didn't want to give any hint that he'd heard the two men behind the counter, for one thing, but for another... it didn't gratify him to know he was feared. Not personally. Oh, it was a boon, for sure, when people knew not to be so stupid as to break into your house or menace you on the street. But that was a practical consideration. There'd been a time when his reputation was all that mattered to him. Back when he was young and stupid, of course. That was all you cared about, when your whole world was your friends and your enemies and how your name echoed down the streets you lived on. But now-

"S-Sorry, sir."

Kasoria's free hand went straight to his purse as the sprat bounced off him, laughing run around the corner interrupted by a man-shaped roadblock. From his back on the cold cobbles he stared, as if expecting punishment, divine and cruel. Kasoria looked down and saw recognition in those wide eyes. The boy knew who he was. Had heard the stories. The woman who rushed up clucking pulled him away as if he were a leper, tone snapping to conciliatory right away.

"S-Sir, I'm sorry, he didn't mean to-"

Suddenly she was speaking to the back of a departing man. One walking a little more stiffly than before, she noted. She'd heard the gossip, over clotheslines and store shelves and market stalls. Quite the bloody outrage in the south of town. A house of villains laid waste to, all but burned to the ground, a dozen or so, they said. Deliah would wager there was an element of exaggeration there, but she was Etzos born-and-schooled and knew that since it was likely power-peddlers and the like, an investigation wouldn't go anywhere.

They don't care if they kill each other, she thought with a fierce, primal squeeze of her son, back on his feet and staring at the little man who seemed solid as oak when he'd run into him. No. They don't care if we kill each other, the bastards.

"Was that the man Dad talked about, Mum?"

"First of all, you're to watch where you're going, and second of all-"

"Ow, Mum?!"

"-don't be listening to your Mum and Dad when they're talking private, like! Now bloody well move!"

Kasoria didn't smirk, didn't shake his head or roll his eyes. His leg ached and his back was sore and they'd be worse once he got his supplies back to the house. Odd enough that even the two blokes at the store looked him over curiously as he'd picked it all out. But all of it essential. He just had to get back home and put it all together.

After your medicine, he reminded himself, turning a corner and ignoring a flurry of whispers murmuring from a passing group of urchins. Bugger cut you up a treat with that thing.

The thing sheathed now, at the small of his back. Curved and wicked and sharp and small.

Kasoria's mouth twitched at a memory, fresh as his stitches. It was almost a smile. Being feared didn't excite him. Other things still did.

+++

He didn't exactly need to be an engineer to construct what he wanted. He'd been making little repairs and improvements around his house for a couple of decades, so he knew the basics, but his talents... well, they weren't in carpentry and construction. He remembered the dummies at the academy, though. Worn and smooth where fists and knuckles across the arcs had pounded into them. There were others that had to be replaced or repaired every season, so often were they hacked and stabbed and bludgeoned and brutalized by the cadets. He wasn't expecting anything so polished, but for what he had in mind...

Planks of wood. Rolls of cloth and old clothes. Plenty of rope.

A hammer and a little bag of nails thumped down next to the whole assemblage, laid out like soldiers on parade under the bright, chilly Zi'da suns. He was down to his breeches and shirt and bare feet, stretching out the kinks in his limbs. Randolf may have been a drunk, a bore, and a hopeless gambler, but he knew his healing. The herbs he'd prescribed had been helpful, a spoonful of each one every trial. One for the pain, one for the bleeding... and as he touched the fresh dressings around his arm and leg and back, he found no stickiness greeting his fingers.

About bloody time.

"Think we're up to this?"

The black cat basking luxuriantly on the wall above him blinked swished his tail, and blinked with aristocratic slowness. Kasoria took that as an affirmative. It wasn't much of a backyard, just a rectangle of dirt and brick with a door leading out to the alley, but it had high walls and all the space he needed. He rolled his shoulders, felt them pop and click and rode out the motion all the way down to his fingers.

He was healing well. Best not to fuck it up building a mannequin.

Training dummy.

First things first: the body. He took two of the planks and laid them overlapping at the ends. Taller than him when he laid down next to it for a comparison. Which was intended: most people were bigger than him, after all. Once he had them where he wanted, he took the nails and hammer and... well, did the obvious thing. A steady rap-rap-rap beat out through the brisk air, making a few housebound old folks wonder what the evil little sod was up to. Six nails did it. A solid, almost-straight line... and he had his body.

Next came the arms.

Two more planks at the top corners of the "body", and... Kasoria frowned. Even nailed it they'd be loose, or unsupported. So it would be better to have-

The cat blinked again as the human that fed it and was nice to it put another big, flat stick behind the "body", another length for the arms to get nailed to. He was pleasant, as humans went. Didn't pet too hard or fuss over them, but would it kill him to leave food out? He only ate when the human did, and that wasn't near often enough. But the fluffy little parasite yawned and scratched and kept watching.

More hammering. Etzos cats didn't flee from noise, though. Much like the humans, they stuck around to watch what all the fuss was about.

Finally, the head. The simplest part of all. A short plant sticking out the top of the rectangular body, between the splayed out arms. Kasoria was sure he'd probably drawn better when he was a drooling child, but he wouldn't be seeing much of the planks. Not once he dressed his new "friend".

He stood the mannequin up against a wall and began wrapping cloth around the body and arms, even the head. Once the bones of his project were covered by a nice, thick layer of meat and skin and sinew, the old shirt and jacket went on, too. The cat rather enjoyed the sight of that: his pet human cursing softly as he struggled to get a shirt onto a wooden man. The jacket was much easier

Kasoria felt the arms of his masterpiece, feeling thickness and solidity there. Cloth and rags, of course, but they were cheap. Which was handy considering what would happen to them. Cloth was wound around and around the head, too, until it almost looked like a bandit's mask, only the silly sod forgot the holes. The rope was the last thing. Half of it going around the body and arms and head, keeping everything tight and secure... and the rest he used to secure the dummy to the wall.

He stepped back, and looked at his work. Then he blinked, and breathed, felt the frost tickle his nose and the sound of contented purring from above him. The roaring ruckus of a city beyond that, this high-walled oasis where he stood and-

-opened his eyes-

-saw a man there. An Etzos tough, like the nameless legion he'd faced. Bearded and marked by pox or scars. Clothing cheap and steel in his hand expensive. Hair cut short to fight the lice, or left long and dandy-like for the whores. He blinked and the man did not go away. He was there. That was who he face, and his hand went back to the small of his back and-

-before he'd finished settling into a fighting stance-

-the karambit kissed the sunlight, and he was ready to practice.

Kasoria wasn't so arrogant to think that any blade put in his hands would be wielded as if he were a master of it. Skill at arms demanded practice, patience, and the discipline to apply both those things over a period of seasons, often arcs. He knew he'd have to do the same to master this new weapon, smaller and lighter than his gladius.

He thought he did well. Made a fine start. But once he starting thinking like a killer, not a fighter, things got much more interesting.

The neighbors appreciated the lack of hammering, but the noise didn't completely go away. Grunting, Banging. Wood being pounded and kicked and then the quieter yet distinct sound of cloth and rope being torn. Kasoria liked this new trophy. The forwards-curving blade meant that one it dug into flesh, all you had to to was push ahead, and it would rip and tear with ease. What would be a cut or a slice suddenly began a gushing gash, ragged and impossible to staunch, or ignore.

Damn sure felt that way when he was cutting me up.

He slid away from the latest cut and time flowed back to where he always began. The man standing before him. Not a tall, ragged, haphazardly constructed collection of wood and nails and clothes and rope, but a man. Snarling and sweating, stinking of booze and hate and Blight, or Fuzz, or Reaver, any of a dozen drugs that made a man fight like an Immortal (at least until his heart gave out). A dagger was in his hand and as Kasoria darted forward he thrust-

-Kasoria twisted away to his left, right coming up at the same time-

-slamming his fist into the dummy's chest, curved blade below his hand punching into it as well, and when he withdrew his hand-

-it was a jerk to the side, not a snap of his arm back to the side of his face-

-karambit ripping it's way out of the hole it had made, and the man howled silently in Kasoria's mind, slashing-

-little killer stepping forward, jerking up his arm to block the imaginary blow-

-legs bending as he slashed low, almost like... a punch that he intended not to connect. That was how he approached it and cataloged it in his mind for later use. Instead of a punch to the knee, Kasoria punched to the side of it... and the curved blade under his hand ripped through it instead-

Not enough to break it, but it would be fucked up good and proper. Bang, down to one knee.

-followed it up with one, two three, swift jabs to the stomach and chest as he straightened back up-

-each blade-tipped blow punching another hole through the coat-

-finishing with a sideways punch that was in fact a slash-

-that would tear out the bigger man's throat almost to the bone. Kasoria stepped back and let the phantom gurgle and cough and claw at his wounds and then fall. They did all of those things. Very few exceptions. A precious few just lurched back after him, hate and rage burning so strong the didn't seem to notice the damage... but their body did.

Knee. Guts. Lung. Heart. Throat. Lose one, two, or all, and you're done.

He stepped back and the corpse faded from his mind. The cold wasn't so much a chill on his skin now, as he was simply aware of it. A sheen of sweat was protecting him, his muscles were not aching but nicely swollen. Barely half a break and already he felt intoxicated, bubbling over with the energy a good, solid training session would give a man.

Then he felt his back, and his hand came away sticky. Always a cost...

It was an exertion, all right, but instructive, and useful, and... it didn't feel right. Kasoria paced up and down the rectangle, idling musing if he should consider planting some vegetables in the bare earth as he pondered the problem. This was a fighting weapon, of course. It was designed for the ripping of flesh while held in a fist, and yet there was something missing. Some other utility he was ignoring.

The little man stopped and frowned. Surprise. An element he relied on as much as skill and training and disguise. Because an assassin didn't crow out his intentions and call for honorable combat. His attacks came swiftly, from a blind quarter, as bereft of warning as they were chivalry. For every brawl in the streets Kasoria had triumphed in, there'd been two or three times a gladius through the back had concluded his contract.

He flexed his hand around the karambit, pointer finger kneading against the ring it was looped inside. Small. That meant concealable. And designed for quick, brutal slashing.

Kasoria walked back towards the target, and halfway over it became a wander... then a shuffle... and he was The Beggar Man again. His favorite disguise, for it came so easily and fit him so well. He could feel his cloak over his shoulders, his coat under it, hood up, words slurring out from his lips... and suddenly they were, nonsense and gibberish from his childhood, his memories, his musings, babbling in two languages. When he peered up at the dummy, he wore that slack-jawed expression of the lack-witted and mind-addled.

He could see the disgust. Feel the disdain. That revulsion and superiority that disarmed people, made them pause-

the karambit, gripped tight to his side, hidden by a cloak and coat that was not yet there, his other hand out and palm up, asking, begging-

Then he moved. Slowly. Arm coming up and diagonally-

Remember, they'll be taller. Get your elbow up higher.

-aiming for the throat-

Swing your hips. Not so much it puts you off balance, but enough to give your strike more speed and force.

-a punch that was not a punch, knuckles not making contact, but the blade-

Step into the blow. Close the distance. Cut deep, and sever as much as you can in one blow.

SKRRRRTCH

Disbelief. That's what he saw in that featureless cloth face as the karambit blade ripped right through the "throat" beneath it. Not a memory, more a prophecy. Because he knew others would bear it, in those last trills of their lives, when the beggar became the killer became the last face they would see. He jerked back the blade, sliding into defensive stance before his hand stopped moving... but it was hardly necessary. Looking at the gash he'd made, he'd estimate... two inches inside. Maybe more. Everything severed save the backbone.

So he did it faster. Strode back, focused, ambled back over. Same gibberish in a different order, karambit at his side and-

SKRRRRTCH

That time was faster, but less than he could go. The third time he was almost bent over, working on a hacking cough he could conjure pretty much immediately after arcs of practice. Karambit flashing up faster, the time it took to blink-

SKRRRRTCH

Kasoria switched to his left hand. No telling what limb you might have available when you needed it. More awkward, of course, taking more focus to line up the blow, but it was the same-

SKRRRRTCHTHUNK

-until the blade ran out of fresh cloth and bit into the plank behind it instead, force and physics yanking the whole nailed-together structure away from the wall-

-at least until the rope went tight and Kasoria went stumbling away as his karambit stayed put, stuck fast in the plank and he had to flail to steady himself, keeping on his feet but tightening everything up to stop-

He hissed and the cat's ears pricked up. The human was in pain. That was a problem. If he was in pain, who would feed him? Well, plenty of other humans, but the cat liked surety. It kept him fed. The human panted and hissed and there was redness dotting the white slash of bandage around his thigh. He touched it and cursed himself for a fool.

Too much, too soon. Idiot.

He straightened up and found his balance again. Staggered back to the dummy and yanked the karambit free, sheathing it. Grabbed the hammer and nails, not leaving anything behind or a task undone for when he opened the backdoor-

There was an impatient mewl at his feet, and a hungry, snooty bundle of fur darted in before he could even cross the threshold.

"Shut up. Could have been worse."

Overview

Even your generic training threads are masterful, wonderfully detailed, and halfway towards a character study -or at least provide some proper insight- into the windows of Kasoria's soul. It's been a good stretch of reading.
