Even the skeptics can be suckered into a con.

Almund is a thriving township with a dark side. With houses made from the wooden bodies of decommissioned ships, there are many opportunities here, coupled with many dangers.

A tentative hand pushed the unassuming wooden door tucked down the alleyway. It creaked ominously upon its old, worn hinges, seeming to be as reluctant to open as the visitor was to enter. Nervousness was likely warranted. After all, it was above this domicile that cracked and yellowed skulls donned the lintel like warning crossbones upon a black flag. The very sight of the place was enough to send skittish children running even without the stories attached. For the superstitious in Almund, however, The Bones was practically hollowed ground.

Maxine stepped across the threshold into the dimly lit room, the wind that came in at her heels gently disturbing the flames on the candle wicks scattered about the inside. Her eyes focused on an aging woman seated at a table fixed in the center, staring back with an unsurprised gaze. The woman's hand reached down into a small black sack. She withdrew a white oval, which she subsequently placed upon the table in front of her and flipped it over. A sideways triangle peeped out from the center of a line. The stranger's eyes brightened at the very sight of the symbol.

"You're here for a fortune," Efah Chazon, Almund's prolific rune reader stated with a smile. Another gust of wintry wind snagged the door and slammed it shut behind Max, startling the Mixed Race a bit. The Rusalka swallowed and shook her irrational trepidation away. She marched forward and placed a single gold nel before Efah, who then gestured to the seat across from her.

"They say you can see the future," Max accused the peculiar woman as she eased down into the chair, arms crossed.
"I just interpret the runes, dear," Efah clarified, pocketing the coin. "That's all."
"And the runes presume to know someone's future?"
"So it's been said."
"People say a lot of things not worth my coin," the Rusalka said while she eyed the reader skeptically. It was as though she believed the invasiveness of her stare alone could break her. The old woman failed to waver. Instead, she looked right back at her almost expectantly.
"Have you ever lent your ear to the dead?" Efah said with a cock of her head. Max's face contorted with confusion and Efah chuckled at the sight. "The bones of Scalvorian captains passed are willing conduits with much to say. They may speak to you if you don't fear them looking back at you from beyond." It was a chilling challenge. The possibility anything or anyone could communicate from beyond the grave was unsettling enough. Drawing the attention of any sort of spirit was something most tended to avoid. Her eerie threat only worked if one bought into her abilities. So far, Max wasn't convinced.

"I'm not afraid," Max responded fiercely.
"Of course you're not," Efah said with a polite, knowing smile. She briefly vacated her chair to shuffle toward a shelf mounted upon her wall. It was littered with all sorts of odd things. Skulls, animal bones, trinkets, and wooden boxes lined it in no particular order. From the collection she removed a well-abused wooden box with odd engravings Max hadn't a hope of deciphering. Efah returned to the table and placed the box before her. Gingerly, she opened it and removed another black sack, shoving the first one aside.

"Give me your hands," the reader instructed. Max sighed but did as she was bid. Efah pressed the black sack in both her hands. "These are the bones of a sea scourge indeed. Tylinne the Terrible, they all called her. She was a mean wretch that ruled her crew with an iron fist. So cruel was she that they claim the first and only mutiny to rise against her was crushed so hard, the port water was red for an entire trial. Frightful hag as she was, she was one of the best damn pirates the island had ever seen. Smart. Insightful. Blunt as a hammer!"

I could use something as blunt as a hammer to the head right now...

"The point is," Efah wrapped her short story up as though she could read Max's mind. "Tylinne The Terrible was one of the nastiest captains, and with her bones serving as runes, she'll be the one to tell it true. What's your name, dear?"
"Max," the Rusalka answered.
"Max...?"
"Just Max."
"Max then," Efah shrugged politely. The older woman placed her hands around Max's and bowed her head. When she closed her eyes, Max felt oddly compelled to do the same. "Tylinne O'Harra, captain of the infamous Widower, we call to you from where you rest. Return to your remains. Reveal the fortune of the one here that calls herself Max!"

When the otherworldly request was finished, Max and Efah raised their heads and opened their eyes. The reader removed her hands and parted Max's to scoop up the black sack. She loosened the ties and promptly turned the bag over. Two dozen pieces of bone spit out onto the table. Some revealed sharp, black symbols facing upward, the rest were blank besides their off-white, chipped exterior. Max sat back in her chair while Efah stared down at the outcome, a finger tapping her wrinkled chin. After a few trills the woman began rearranging the order of the runes. When she was finished she blinked wide eyes from the runes up to the face of her customer.

"You're going on a dark journey, my dear," Efah said with heavy foreboding.

Oh, here we fuckin' go.

The reader's hands extended out over the runes, shaking a bit before she withdrew them almost protectively back to her lap.
"Something is coming," she continued with eyes locked upon the runes that displayed symbols. "Something bad. Soon. A change you don't want." She tapped her finger upon an "M" shaped rune and then moved onto the next: one shaped like two pointy mountains flipped sideways. "For this change you must be careful. It will come for and from within your own home." She moved the symbol-bearing runes aside as she read each in some sort of sequential order Max couldn't decipher. Yet while she regarded the entire thing as bullshit, she found something inside her chest tightening with each word Efah spoke.

"Be wary," the reader added with a tapping finger upon the desk. "The forces that bring this change are like ghosts. You do not know their names. You will not see them until they come for you." The door rattled on its ancient hinges and the candles flickered. While the unexplained interruption had Max instinctively looking over her shoulder, Efah persisted without a care. "When they come you will lose."
"I'll lose?" Max piped up suddenly, indignantly. "What the fuck do you mean I'll lose?"
"You will lose something of value to you," Efah elaborated weakly. "But in this loss there will still be choice. This journey will be full of choices."

Immortals be damned! Did I just pay to hear a lot of bad fuckin' news?

Maxine shoved herself away from the table, somewhat disturbing the runes upon the table. They rattled in place and Efah looked up at her with that same, stupid, worried expression.
"Bullshit!" Max exclaimed as she rose from her seat. "This Captain Tyler, or Tilda, or whatever the fuck The Terrible is bullshit! These carvings on bones from whatever or whoever? All bullshit." She had half a mind to wring the woman's neck and demand her gold nel back. No, two gold nels back to compensate her for her wasted time. Instead she was more keen on making her way to the door.

"Wait!" the reader's voice rose with unexpected urgency. "There's something else you must know!" Max paused mid-step, and that hesitation alone was all Efah needed to press on. The Rusalka glanced over her shoulder. She wasn't even exactly sure why she was still humoring the old, delusional hag. "The change is not the only evil that is coming," Efah implored her to understand. "This evil will come like a wolf in sheep's clothing! But like a wolf, it will sink its teeth into many poor souls. Some you will know!"
"Merces?" Maxine found herself demanding with curled fists despite herself, turning in place to face Efah. The woman shook her head, which only served to anger the Rusalka more. "Tell me, dammit!"
"You will look Death in the face more than once in one night. You will experience strength, but you will be wounded by sacrifice as its price. You will see red. Your sword of justice will grow heavy. And when it is all over and the bodies cool, the only evil left to face will be you."

Max backed away from Efah's pointing finger with a slow shake of her head. She was crazy. No way had she gotten all of that from some old bones. There was no chance she hadn't made the whole thing up as she likely always did to rile her customers. This had to have been her marketing strategy. It was certainly something most would think worthy of telling others about. Efah's words had pierced something in her soul that Maxine couldn't quite articulate. Either way, her prophecy was not one Max would hold as true. It was all bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. She kept telling herself that even as she exited, slammed the door behind her, and made her way home.
