Investing in Industry (Acadia)

Image
2nd-26th of Ymiden, Arc 718

The first homes would be those of miners. Not unlike Yurrova, Acadia - or its foundations - was surrounded by mountains, high and proud. Many of them held veins and openings ripe for shafts, with plentiful materials local to the area: stone, iron and steel, gold, and even gems. Of course, the wish was always in finding a vein of onyx, but it didn't matter what he found - necessarily - or in what order he found it. What mattered was building infrastructure below and around the base of the city, bringing jobs and opportunities to the area, and stacking laborers and their families into homes where they could shepherd the development of the city.

To that end, he had invested - almost literally - all of his gold into this project. Nineteen thousand and five hundred nel. It was a "community revitalization project", within which he'd funneled workers in from Ki'eiran, a place where he was considerably influential. Of course, these were men and their families who had no work to do and nothing to spend their idle time on, save for watching their copper nels winnow on a daily basis, falling deeper into the pit of drunkenness and unemployment.

Alistair, once again, had come through to provide them an opportunity... at the behest, apparently, of Kaelserad. But the wealth that would come from these mines, and these men, was not to be distributed directly to the hospital. It was merely an assurance, for not only the hospital, but for his other lofty goals.

The mining operation was not to be a business directly ran by him, but a funded investment contracted out to other, smaller groups of men, women and their direct family and friends. Alistair was much more a profit holder and lender to these groups, and so his profits did not in fact directly emerge from the rocks and gems, but the investment and interest payments allowed by the products. He determined that, ultimately, investing into the infrastructure of Acadia... its mines, lumberers and other mills, farmers and craftsmen, would ultimately do far better for both long-term revenue and regional influence.

As such, the task began, and already he'd had plans laid out to him by the laboring men.

The mountains around them - which were unknown to the people of Ki'eiran - were three, and massive in size. Though they provided Acadia with a robust natural defense, their slope made them difficult to reach into. Thus, the initial shafts needed to be built on the surface floor, directly westward, northwestward and eastward from the impending city. The western and northwestern shafts would be more approachable to the residents of the urban center and direct suburbs, while those living downhill from Acadia's upper heights could work and access the eastern mine more easily. There was also the potential for a mine directly under Acadia, across from the eastern one, though due to the uncertain nature of the mountain's internal infrastructure, Alistair did not follow this line of thinking.

Instead, he suggested that they harvest the large rocks overlooking the city as a method of building miner's homes and other equipment, whilst paving thin roads directly from the city determined solely on distance traveled from point to point. The shorter an entry point was in regards to distance from the eventual city square, the more desirable it was as a location. With this in mind, they built three points as they originally intended - and one interim excavation for materials - and Alistair provided names for the three mountains. One of them, of course, the greatest one that overlooked the city... was Mount Reyard.

The man had always been his idol, and he had always meant more to mages than simply a powerful, Revealed mage with exceptional dreams. He was a symbol of progress, and meaning. He sought prosperity, and the surpassing of mortal limits. Acadia was built not only on Alistair's dreams, but his. So of course, the largest and nearest of the mountains was his. The other two... Mount Damien and, of course... the one closest to where he'd place his castle, Mount Fridgar. It was juvenile to have named them all after people, he might've thought. But they all mattered to him... and they all brought him to this moment.

The mountain he would view when he peered out through his high windows was Mount Fridgar. That... was a refreshing thing to know. To think about.

Hopefully, within that one, they would find many great things - diamonds, seams of emerald and sapphire, topaz and amethyst. Ruby, and other gleaming gems. Sorelian steel... veins of onyx. He hoped that they would. He wanted people to view that place fondly. Within its name was a history of love, courage, and compassion. It would always remind him of the benign dreams he had for this place.

It would keep him... un-corrupted. Like Fridgar always had.

The funding was divided and distributed out. Three mining operations were formed, with three make-shift groups commanding their own. Already there were problems and complaints - everyone of course wanted Mount Reyard, but Alistair funded those who manned the mountains further with trivial amounts more in gold. Six thousand to the miners of Mount Reyard, six thousand five hundred to the miners of Mount Damien, and seven thousand to those who had the temerity to dig their picks into Mount Fridgar.

The laborers worked tirelessly to develop homes for themselves, building the foundations from night to day, and night again. Slowly, with his wealth as the trove on which they operated, the investment came closer to fruition. The first mining shafts were developed slowly, with Alistair helping to remove rocks through careful Rupturer's Nails stapled into the space of the caves. He was astounded by what men could do when they worked truly tirelessly. Many of them had not been employed for what must have been an entire season, and so their reserves of energy - and willingness to prove themselves - was fairly endless.

Alistair, too, helped... mostly with the miners of Mount Reyard, digging a pick into the walls as best he could, helping the laborers purely with his sheer strength, precision and endurance. He was no skillful miner, but he seemed to make all the difference, and provided many of the laborers with more time and opportunities to build their established places of residence. The only issue for them, in the long-term, would be agriculture. He supposed they would have to trade with the locals of Hyran, with farming settlements not far from here.

All in due time.

By the end of every eve, there was new progress. Alistair visited each of the mining shafts and eventually spread out his labor, assisting and motivating them with charming words and ancient stories. He taught the men of his past, his life. He taught them of magic, too, and its glories. Although many were skeptical, more and more they seemed to understand it... and their fear waned. Many professed willingness to live alongside mages in Acadia, if they were... "like Alistair". He understood what they meant.

He'd been working with these people, these locals of the region, for some time now. And he'd always loved them, and they had loved him back. To know such a bond transcended spark, mutation, and ether. They wanted to know mages - truly know them - and live among them. They wanted for society to not be divided by a class of mage above man, or for the two groups to simply segregate and collectivize. Alistair understood, after speaking to so many of these common men, what he needed to do.

He needed to not only invest wealth, but to bring these opportunities forward with an even and open hand. He needed to educate mages and non-mages in the same universities, learning the same lessons, coinciding with one another. He needed to dispel the idea of superiority among one group or another, and foster relationships between mages and the not-so-flagrant. To that end, his kinship with Doran was a wondrous symbol. It was proof of everything that was necessary to uphold Acadia as a city, and its ideals.

He had to be the example. He knew it.

Alistair needed to be the rolemodel. The common men, and the mages, they would all look to him as their leader. Lord Proctor, Deoch Daire, or simply Lord Alistair of the realm of Radomir... it didn't matter. His role was changing, once more, to that of a leader. He had people who were quite fond of him, in many different places.

He couldn't remain for more than the several trials he'd allotted, but with his oversight and leadership, the operations were primed towards success. When Alistair left to attend to the financial imperatives of this arrangement, he did so with completed homes behind him, and men pronouncing success in their first veins of steel. The first industry of Acadia was founded, and though it wasn't safe nor particularly glamorous, it brought laborers, their families, their homes and their dreams. The visionary he was, Alistair could scarcely ask for more.

But he would, anyway.

word is spreading of the near-philantrophic doctor of Kaelserad; from his donations, dreams, and even down to the fact he works side by side those he's been supporting, people are talking. While there are many who disagree with his ideology, most can't deny what he's doing for the region is impressive - though some are skeptical as to how long he might sustain it.

So, realistically, even with that many people, it would take longer to build established homes than four days - though if you mean they're more like shelter situations that will be expanded on with time and mostly just places for the to sleep, that seems fine. That said, this is a fantasy setting and the point of the game is the story; you've put in the work and the currency, so as long as Chronicle is fine with these developments, that's more than enough for me. Alistair is a busy bee! Though it makes sense IC, I definitely cringed for Mount Damien and Fridgar. Otherwise, very inspiring thread. Na'haer is going through a lot of changes, and it's neat that some of those changes are player inspired. I do think it's a little out of character for Alistair to be literally mining with the other people, but it was an inspiring gesture of a leader. Good stuff!
