40th of Ymiden, Arc 718

There were a small amount of things that made Shl’Drei angrier than animal abuse and mistreatment. His father had done both - and he ended up dead for it. With his help, most of his fathers animals had gone free. He’d set them loose to roam and do whatever they pleased. None of them had attempted to follow him - he couldn’t blame them after what they had gone through, though it had been sad to part with them.

The blond was deep into the stormlands with Liam at his side. He didn’t know what had brought on such thoughts - his days with his father were long gone, and even if he felt bad to leave his mother to deal with his mess he never found it in himself to return home. Hell, he barely remembered ‘home’! Liam leaned into his legs, sensing his distress most likely and seeking to comfort his human partner. Shl’Drei had barely thought to conceal his emotions from the Caracal, it was a way of lying to most beasts after all. He reached down, bending slightly to reach the overgrown cats head. He smoothed the short fur there as he felt his tension ease.

It wasn’t long after that the Caracal froze in place - his shoulders tense in warning. Liam let out a low growl, deep and guttural causing Shl’Drei to put a hand to the whip on his waistband. Liam crashed into his side, knocking him over just in time to push him out of the line of an arrow. Bewildered, he watched a Lumen Wolf jump from the bushes and out into the open. It had a wild look in it’s eyes - it posture was tense and stiff, something having frightened it and separated it from it’s pack. Shl’Drei didn’t have time to speak as a man came lumbering after the wolf - a small crossbow fitted on his arm. The contraption weighed him down, but he made good pace despite that.

It was a blur of movements - the wolf probably saw him as a threat, he reasoned - the Lumen jumped at him, canines bared as Liam growled and stood in front of him. The blond stood quickly to move, but in the next instant the wolf collapsed - and arrow deeply punctured into it’s side. It whined - a pitiful sound of pain and sadness as it tried to push itself up. Eyes wide Shl’Drei didn’t have the chance to approach the fallen creature to provide aide - the stocky man was quick to pierce it’s skull with another arrow. A flash of his father killing the large tiger in his mind -

”Worthless! I told you to jump faster!” The tiger cowered, a wild look of fear and apprehension in his eyes. Bao was a Bengal Tiger - and a very well behaved one. He always worked hard for Shl’Drei’s father, Azeraj. But that day Azeraj showed a cruelty he couldn’t handle - he shot a arrow into the scarred tigers neck and left him for dead.

- Shl’Drei saw red before he whipped the mans back, his bull whip snapping forward again at the sound of a pained yelp. Once, twice..! Several cracks on his back and the stocky man was writhing on the grass, a mess of tears, drool, and pain - his shirt open in places the whip had cut through. Liam growled loudly - the sounds leaving the man his sadistic side. The blond haggard in his breathing and stopped just long enough for Liam to begin circling the one who had caused such rage in his alpha. The man laid there - sobbing and begging for mercy while asking Shl’Drei why.

Why? Why?” His voice was ice to the stocky mans ears which caused him to shake as the blond stepped closer. He was enraged - the fire in his veins itched and fueled his annoyance. “You’re the lowest type of scum…

Shl’Drei spat venomously - ripping the contraption from the mans arm as he yelped and ripping off his shirt completely. The blond stood back as a dark look gleamed over his features. “Whipped to death wouldn’t let you atone for what you’ve just done - but I’ll mark you so badly you’d wish I had.

And just like that he whipped the man - uncaring of where on his body the leather met skin.

Shl’Drei didn’t stop until the man had lost consciousness and even then he was sure he’d continued to torture him bits after. By then his breathing had returned to normal as he feel back on his ass and looked at the grass. The whole time he could only thing of the pleading look on Bao’s face as his father had shot him. But now he had to face yet another case of animal cruelty. He was quick to send a prayer for the wolfs soul - but something caught his attention as he removed the arrows from the Lumen’s body. It was female…

And she was nursing.

Damn it - he’d need to find the pups and make sure they were okay. After cleaning her up to the best of his unskilled abilities he set forth back into the brush the Lumen had jumped out of. He could only hope that the unconscious man hadn’t killed them. He’s pay if he had. Liam followed him obediently albeit hesitantly do to the fresh smell of blood from the man he’d witnessed being beaten. Shl’Drei was careful to follow the path were it appeared the man and Lumen had come from - females didn’t stray to far from their pups after all.

Just then he heard a soft yip - more of a whine and mewl mixed together. He froze - his shoulders sagged in relief as he noticed a small pup working it’s way from a hole in the ground. It was quite young - and it was having trouble getting out of the hole dug for it. She hid it, he admired her intelligence - she must’ve know the man would’ve killed the pup. She must have put the pup in the hole and ran knowing the curious beast wouldn’t be able to get out on it’s own. She thought she could come back for it, he let of a shaky breath - but knew couldn’t leave the pup behind.

The small Lumen barked - but it was more winded than and borf sounding. He smiled - amused by it’s tenacity as it attempted once more to free it’s self from the hole. He walked over and stuck out a finger - startling the pup back down causing him to chuckle a bit. He waited a few bits for the pup to feel he wasn’t a threat and poke it’s head out again. Once it did - it experimentally grabbed his finger which he allowed.

It has teeth, so it’s probably close to weening. He sighed - it didn’t have long until it would be able to eat regular meat which was good. He gently pulled his finger back, but the pup - smart and determined - clung to it and used it to pull himself from the hole. Once fully out, Liam inspected the small creature before stalking away uninterested.

Good job, pup. Don’t mind him, he knows he’s not the only one who’s getting attention now.” Shl’Drei inspected the pup - and though dirty it seemed unharmed. Looking more closely revealed it was female - and she was very curious creature. She was sniffing everything! He observed her as she crawled around a bit before grabbing her by the scruff on the back of her neck and lifting her into his arms.

We’re going home, pup, Liam.’” He announced causing the pup in his arms to tilt it’s head. He gestured to himself with one hand. “Shl’Drei.” Then to the pup. “Leora.” The excited yip that left the pups lips caused him to smile - Leora hadn’t understood a thing.

He would start training her immediately then. First on the list would be bathroom habits and names - the more pressing matters. He’d need something to carry her in - Lumen’s were known to like open spaces and freedom to roam. Keeping Leora in a house for long periods of time was out - her health would quickly deteriorate and she’d die.

So he’d by something to carry her in - just to be sure she could travel with him safely. Once he reached a destination she’d be let out to run around and such. First thing when he arrived home though - Leora needed a bath. Once he was out of the clearing he headed home - shielding the view of the pups mother form her - though he knew she could smell the blood and her scent mixing, if the whine she let out was any indication. He’d take good care of her.

Comments: Great show of the dynamic between Liam and Shl'Drei. It felt like a really close partnership. Also interesting that your character would care so much for animals but not so much for people. If you haven't already done so, please let a local prophet know that you are acquiring a wolf pup in this manner. Thanks!
