How much is that...Enormowl in the Window?

Image
When Faith told Karem it was an honor to meet her, Padraig knew her well enough, to know she'd have said the same had the woman not been an Immortal. Friends were friends, especially trusted ones. Kura fell very neatly into that category, therefore her mother who she'd spoken well of last time they'd met, was as welcome as she herself would have been.

Still, it wasn't every trial that one found an Immortal outdoors in their garden. True enough for anyone, though ironically similar had happened to them on a number of occasions. Except not all of them, one in particular, had been as welcome as this one was.

When Karem stroked the bird's wing and looked it over carefully, he wondered if she was able somehow to communicate with the creature without speaking. Possibly, considering her realm. Still, it didn't come as too great a surprise that the enormowl wasn't familiar with the wilds, or even able to survive there for long. "As we understand it, someone has been turning the animals loose from a local menagerie. We don't know for sure," he explained, "but we've assumed that that's where he's come from."

Now though? He was starting to think he didn't care much for the idea of caging a creature like this through it's whole life, when it was meant to fly free instead. It didn't sit quite as well then as he thought that it might. The idea of returning the enormowl to the place they'd assumed it had come from. But what else could they do?

It was an interesting theory however, that their previous time spent with Kura had left a trace of her behind with them, and that's what had attracted the bird. As a scientist, he might like to have a closer look at the question. Then again, it seemed as if there'd be some sort of magic or divine...'stuff', involved, which would be difficult even for someone familiar with physics and chemistry, even alchemy.

"Do you think he might have come from somewhere farther away than the menagerie?" he asked, frowning as he also glanced at Faith. Something Karem had said made him wonder. And they'd never actually visited the place, or knew if it actually had an enormowl.

Still, they didn't have enough food in the house to fill this thing's belly. But nonetheless the appearance of the huge wolves startled him. It shouldn't have. He'd seen one before alongside Kura. But it struck him somehow that his and Faith's garden was suddenly filling up with some very large individuals. Their Immortal guest seemed to have a way with all of them however, and he was much less worried now that the owl might start eyeing them as a possibility for a meal.

So lead the way? "The menagerie is that way," he said, pointing in the general direction they'd intended to go. Faith had the food, and it ought be enough if doled out in small bits, to at least get a start before the wolves returned with something substantial. So with that in mind, he opened the gate for all to pass through, though he figured the owl was wide enough to make it impossible, and he'd have to hop over the fence instead.

How much is that...Enormowl in the Window?

"My apologies," she said to Karem with a smile, "The honour is to have Kura's mother here. She is our friend and we both understand the importance of those." That was the simple truth to Faith; the honor and respect due to an Immortal was, just like mortals, dependent on who the Immortal was. Having flung a hairbrush at Aelig and attempted to skewer Lisirra, Faith felt it was very much on a case by case basis. But Kura's mother? Well that was a different thing entirely to the former slave.

The owl was domesticated, it turned out and Faith nodded at Padraig's description. "They train them there, I believe." If she had opinions, she had something of a tendency to keep them to herself. "They're used as mounts for the local military, in the air division." She smiled slightly and looked between the two. "We do medicals on the troops at the Order of the Adunih. They talk." She hadn't heard about people releasing the animals until Padraig had said it, with a somewhat dry delivery, moments before and she had to admit that she had assumed he was joking.

When the wolves came into the garden that Faith's expression changed again, though. Her face lit with delight at the sight of them, her eyes widening with amazement. "Oh, they're so beautiful" she whispered to no one in particular and wondered how Padraig, Quattro and Cosmo might feel if .. no, best not go there she thought and she gave Padraig a wry grin. She didn't need to say anything, she was sure, he already knew. He was doing much better at that mind reading these trials, she thought with a smile.

The plan Karem had was clear, though, and yes, they could do that. Lead the way, that was fine, Padraig did that. Faith could see him, ticking over thinking about what sort of 'stuff' Kura might have left behind, whether he could measure it, weight it, determine it's chemical make up. She said nothing, just raised an eyebrow at him. He was so quick to accept that she was a complete mystery, why he felt the need to dissect everything else, she simply did not know. But she would have him no other way, so she smiled and touched her hand to his as she walked out of the gate.

She kept feeding the owl, walking with them towards The Menagerie where the mounts for land, sea and air were trained for the Scalvoris military. As they walked, Faith spoke to Karem with a curious voice. "You wanted to speak to us about something? Is there something we can help with?" If there was, there was no doubt that the earnest young woman would help any and every way she could. She'd do that for a stranger, after all, so there was no doubting that she'd do it for the mother of her friend.

Karem simply nodded as Padraig explained where the animal had likely come from. The truth was, she didn't really care that much how the enormowl had gotten to be where it was, she was more focused on getting it back home safely. At Faith's correction of herself though, Karem gave her a warm smile, an expression that mirrored her daughter almost exactly. "That I can accept." she said, her tone showing she was happy.

When Faith explained what they used the great owls for, Karem blinked in surprise, then grimaced. "Owls as a combat mount? I'd have suggested something sturdier or faster. Still, it is an interesting idea. I wonder if Kura could manage it without having to train one." she said, her tone turning curious at the end. When Faith called her wolves beautiful, Karem smiled again. "Perhaps one day I'll show you my forest. I live with hundreds of the great furry beasts." she said, laughing as she spoke.

When they left, the owl followed them obediently, sticking to short, easy glides. Every so often it would land next to Faith and hoot pitifully at her, but never did more than that. At Faith's question, Karem laughed gently. "You know, I've heard about the two of outside of Kura. From what I know of you, Faith, if I asked you to do the impossible, you'd give it a shot. Fortunately, from what I've heard about you, Padraig, you'd be there to stop her before she gets herself killed." she said, before shaking her head. "Also, Padraig, if you wish a career in weapons development, the Empress has expressed an interest in those explosives of yours. And more specifically, how to counter them."

After pausing a moment with an abstracted look, as if she were focusing on something neither mortal could see, Karem shook herself. "My wolves are preparing some food for our friend." she said, before looking back at Faith and Padraig. "But I want from you two at the moment has little to do with either my role as an Immortal or as an Imperial Councilor. No, I'm more here as a mother." she said, before taking a deep breath. "My daughter left home an Arc ago, and when she left she was...not well. Broken and hurting. The two of you are the only two people I know of who have spent any extended time around Kura." she said, before pausing. "So...how is she?" she asked, her voice showing her worry for her daughter.

Something still struck him as not quite right about keeping a creature such as this enormous owl in captivity. Perhaps an odd contradiction for a scientist, who often dealt in logic and practicality rather than gut or heartfelt responses. He could see the usefulness of such an animal as a mount. But ultimately, Karem had been correct that the animal couldn't survive in the wilds at this point, had he ever been part of them at all. Better then to return him to what he was most familiar with.

The mention of not just a few, but hundreds of the enormous wolves brought a curious smile to his face. One had filled a room, back in Rharne. Padraig could only imagine that many in one place, and wonder at it. At any rate the owl seemed content enough to follow them where they went. Surely in part to Karem's influence. But he also suspected that it had bonded quickly with Faith, and considered her to be a good and ongoing source of treats. After all, when Faith was cooking in their kitchen, neither Cosmo or Quattro either one had much use for him.

He grinned though when Karem referenced Faith's very nature. "There is no impossible," he agreed and glanced at Faith and winked. "I wouldn't be able to convince her if I tried, and I very rarely do." Why would he, when he'd seen how much she could truly accomplish once she set her mind to it?

The mention of his explosives though took him by surprise. Padraig hadn't thought of those in quite a long time. The Empress? "You mean the Eternal Empire?" he asked. Was that who was interested? Truth told, weaponry had never been a favored focus of study for him. Nonetheless, "Thrown, I'm not sure there's much of a counter expect good shielding, thick walls and better armor." Magic, maybe, or a counterblast?

On the other hand, "I've observed Cosmo, our pup, digging in the garden after something or other. He seems to be able to smell and identify things, like a ground squirrel for instance, that we can not. A much better sense of smell, more refined," he added. "It occurs to me that a canine, dog or wolf, might be trained to sniff the explosives out, and identify their placement before someone comes along to step on them."

But then it appeared that Karem's arrival had less to do with the owl, than something far more personal to her. She didn't seem to be here so much as an Immortal, but as a mother. He'd never really thought about it. But why wouldn't it be the case that Immortal's worried about their children too? "Kura has been a very good friend to us," Padraig said as they walked along.

"She came along when we needed one of those. I hope we've been similar to her." As for what might been bothering Kura, Padraig felt that Faith was probably more equipped to address that than him.

"Oh, I'd like that!" Faith replied, honestly, at the prospect of seeing Karem's forest. She was entranced by the beauty of the wolves, it must be said and she glanced at Padraig and gave him a slightly rueful smile. He knew her tendency, she liked to feed, to care for; animals and people both. The owl seemed to be quite content and Faith continued to feed it every time it wanted a snack. "There you go, it's all scary, I'm sure. We'll get you home soon," she said in a soft and hopefully soothing voice.

Karem's reply to her question and Padraig's response to that caused a smiled to light her face and she looked between the two of them. "I don't believe in impossible. It's a very unscientific term." One eyebrow arched at Padraig as she explained that. "There is no such thing as 'never will', just 'not so far'. If there's always a first time, there's always a reason to try." At Padraig's next words, though, she shook her head. "Very rarely. Only in moments of extreme lunacy." Like on a rooftop as she charged an Immortal, she thought to herself and smiled as she remembered that, in fact, he'd then done what she was going to do. With a smile to Karem, she added, "He's as bad as me, you know. Worse really, he just hides it better."

The conversation on the explosives saw her remain quiet, but he made a good point about the dog. Cosmo seemed to be able to sniff out most anything. Especially trouble or her cooking, she thought to herself but then she turned her attention to Karem's question. Padraig spoke the absolute truth when he said what Kura had been for them. "She has. When we were at our darkest moment, I think." Faith just touched her hand to his, a brief touch but the physical contact was something she felt they both needed in that moment. "And before that, for me. She was a hopeful dream. In the situation I was in then, that was the best and only gift I could receive." She didn't know if Karem knew about who she had been, but that wasn't relevant to here and now and Faith didn't wish to muddy the waters with it.

To answer the question, though? "I think that.. Faith sighed, trying to forumlate the words in her mind. Then, she decided that there was only one way to say what she thought. "I think that she is so busy helping others and caring for others that she sometimes forgets to care for herself. I know that she has her companions, but she cares for them." Faith looked at Karem as she spoke, her silver eyes serious. "She is selfless and that must be exhausting. I'm trying to help her because of Cally, I don't know if she's told you but Cally is a spirit who is attached to Kura. There are others, angry ones. But Cally just wants to care for her. I've been researching into ectoplasm and spirits but..." Faith smiled and her smile was just a little sad.

"I think that Kura looks after those around her, not herself. She needs someone who will accept her for that, know her for who she is and will care for her in the same way." It was sad, Faith thought, that Cally might well have fulfilled that role for her. "I don't think she's unhappy, I think she's focused and determined. But I think, in her heart, she's lonely. I wish I could make it so that she could hear Cally. I think that would help her, help them both."

Faith stopped and gave the owl a treat. "She's not broken, I don't believe. But I think that she's moving, doing, constantly looking after others so that she doesn't stop." Continuing to walk, she ended her thoughts. "Because if she stops, then she'll be hurting again." Without pause, though and without hesitation, she added her absolute bottom line. Of course, these trials, she knew that it was theirs not just hers.

"She's our friend. If there's anything we can do to help her, we will. We keep in touch with these scrolls, so please, just name it and if it is possible, we'll do it."

When both Padraig and Faith agreed that there was no such thing as impossible, Karem grinned slightly. "Not many people who actually recognize and accept that. A lot of people seem to need some things to be impossible in order to function. Never understood why, really." she said, her tone slightly amused. When Padraig asked if she meant the Eternal Empire though, she gave him a very amused look and nodded.

As he explained the problems with countering his invention, she listened quietly and nodded. "You might want to look into ways to counter them when thrown. If you two are going to keep getting involved in the Immortals conflicts, you might come upon a situation where your own invention is being used against you." she said, before she went silent to listen to Padraig and Faith's description of how her daughter was faring.

She was silent for a bit longer after that, clearly deep in thought. After a moment, she stopped moving completely as the air in front of the trio started to shimmer. Reaching into that shimmering spot, Karem pulled out a large back that looked...a little damp. "One of the benefits of my wolves is that they know how to do things regular wolves have trouble understanding. They made this for our friend. It's all raw meat and not very neatly prepared, but it will keep him fed." she said quietly, handing the bag to Faith to replace her largely depleted bag.

"Cally following Kura around as a ghost does not really surprise me. Cally felt, not without reason, that she owed Kura everything. I half-expected her to show up as a Wisp following her death." she said quietly. "You aren't wrong about Kura, however. She has always been more focused on others than herself, for all that she has a very strong sense of self. Very likely you are right about why she never seems to stop helping people to a degree, but she was like that before she broke." she said, before shaking her head. "As for whether or not Kura is still broken, well, do either of you know whether or not she was sleeping well?"

What a strange sight they must make, in the eyes of anyone passing by and looking on. An ordinary man and woman, a gigantic owl hopping along after them and an Immortal. Though chances were a random passerby wouldn't recognize Karem for what she was. Still, better nobody asked. Strange enough to be experiencing it himself, without needing to explain it to somebody else.

"I'm not," he argued, for Karem's sake when Faith declared he was as bad as her. Truth told, he probably was. And if the Immortal didn't know it, at least Faith would recognize his dry sense of humor for what it was. When Karem warned him about immortal conflicts, however, he smiled, but nodded an acknowledgment all the same. "Well I can truthfully say that I've never gone looking for an Immortal conflict to get caught in the middle of. And have no plans to seek more out anytime soon."

She made a good point however, and he'd take it under advisement and maybe look into it. Warfare and the machinery that sometimes powered it wasn't really his area of interest as a scientist and scholar. The hand tossed explosives, the creation of them had been a necessity in response to a specific need. But a way to counter them other than stronger walls and better armor? Well it was an interesting question that he might like to answer, even if he'd no plans for using such things himself.

As for Kura, she'd been a great help to them. A good friend and if they could help any, then of course he was more than willing. She hadn't struck him as the type that would ask. But as for whether or not she slept, Padraig wasn't at all sure she'd mentioned it around him. Not specifically anyway, that he could recall. That one maybe was better left to Faith to answer.

When Karem spoke about coming up with a way to counteract Padraig's explosive thingies when thrown, Faith considered. "If it's impact that does it, then keep them flying." She gave a slight grin, very aware that this was far easier said than done, but then she considered herself more the ideas person and him the implementation. With some seriousness though, she considered. "An alchemist is able, I believe, to mimic what a mage can do, to a certain level? Could you create a shield which is a portal, then the explosive flies through it? Have the opening come out a hundred foot, or however far is appropriate considering the explosive distance and so on, in the direction the shield is pointing. That way, it lands back behind the people who threw it at you." It made sense to her and seemed like an obvious solution. Which probably meant that it wasn't possible or logical and she shrugged slightly.

In terms of Immortal conflict, though, it was true that they didn't seek out trouble so much as tripped over it every other time they left the house, it seemed. She gave a slight wry grin as he assured Karem that he wasn't as bad as her. They both knew the truth of it.

In terms of Cally and Kura though, Faith nodded. "Cally and I share many aspects of our lives, many similarities. I can understand how she must have felt that way, and still does." It was a shame, Faith thought, that it could not be like it was for her, for Cally. Did she feel incredibly grateful to Padraig? Yes, she did. However, Faith was a free woman in love with a free man. She remembered something and smiled slightly at the memory of it; she'd never told Padraig that, if it had come to it, she'd considered asking him to hold her papers rather than her have to take the freedom brand. She was more than grateful and she breathed a heartfelt prayer of thanks to Moseke for the removal of her brands and scars and another to Famula for the strength of conviction not to have asked.

It was Vri, though, that she prayed her thanks to for the man she walked alongside and for what they shared. That was the difference, she thought. She and Padraig shared a life, and the early ending of Cally's meant that she could not have that opportunity. It meant that Cally would always be what she was when she died, which placed another responsibility on Kura, of course.

On Karem's questions, though, about Kura's sleeping patterns, Faith frowned slightly. She remembered something that Cally had said, the first time that they had met in Rharne, about Kura not sleeping. "A friend's betrayal to recover from and a broken soul stopping her from sleeping." Faith looked at Karem and Padraig and explained. "Cally was explaining to me how she feels about Kura, why she hasn't crossed over instead choosing to stay with her. That's what she said. You both used the word broken." Faith looked at Karen and she had a frown of concentration, of thought on her face. "Is that because you are being literal, not figurative?"

Karem laughed as Padraig said he didn't go looking for Immortal conflicts to get involved in. "And yet, Immortal business seems to keep finding you, from what I hear from Kura. Better to be prepared for trouble and be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't find you than to simply hope nothing happens." she said, her tone calm before she fell silent to listen to Faith's suggestion about defending against thrown explosives. "It sounds possible, but then I am neither scientist nor mage, so such things fall well outside of my areas of expertise." she said with a slight shrug. Karem was, by Immortal standards, a fairly simple and straightforward being and such complexities as magic and science held little sway over the Immortal of the Wild.

Karem gave Faith a long, quiet look when she said her life shared many similarities with Cally's. "I would hope, then, that those who put you through such pain are still alive when my daughter tracks them down. You are, no offense intended, gentle hearted and sweet natured. Kura is neither of those, and she would take great pleasure in educating such in the error of their ways." she said, her tone still utterly calm, but with an edge to it that hadn't been there before.

When Faith spoke of a "friend's betrayal and a broken soul" however, Karem went a little pale and stopped moving entirely for a moment. However, the enormowl following the group bumped into Karem after a moment and the Immortal shook herself and started forward again, allowing the owl to pass so that it could hoot at Faith again, clearly begging for more food. "In a sense, yes, we are being literal, though it is more an attempt to explain that which is not easily explained." she said, before taking a deep breath.

"Kura's father was a Sev'ryn, and while Kura was never raised with Sev'ryn culture or values, she does still have Sev'ryn blood. Yet, for seventy-three arcs, there was no sign of her having a Sev'ryn Familiar. However, that changed after Kura's best and closest friend betrayed the Eternal Empire, murdered her aging father, and tried to slay her own mother." she said, before letting out a long sigh. "What made it worse was that Valtharn was Mortalborn as well, the daughter of Raskalarn herself."

"After that, the dreams started. When a Sev'ryn familiar decides it is time for the Sev'ryn to seek it out, they speak through insistent, constant dreams. But Kura, she felt she had her duty, didn't have time to go gallivanting all over Idalos chasing a familiar." she said, her voice quiet. "She held out for forty-nine arcs, during which the dreams got worse and worse, until she couldn't go a night without waking up repeatedly for the strength of the nightmares that haunted her. Finally, they drove her to leave the empire, to seek her familiar. That was roughly an arc ago." she said, before shaking her head. "And according to Cally, there's been no change. Lovely."
