The Sweet Scents Of Home

8th Zi’da, 717

Looking down at the hand Charlie offered, Darcy smiled shakily and gave it a squeeze of thanks, before letting go as the waiter returned, turning her head away from the young man to wipe the last of the tears from her cheeks. She didn’t catch the glare the Warrick gave him, but if she had the Venora would have been grateful. It was the last thing the people of the barony needed to see, one of nobles of their township having a teary in a bar.

Taking the glass of moscato, Darcy turned it slowly back and forth on the table, staring at the gentle bubbles instead of Charlie’s face, but listening all the same.

“Doesn’t deserve me? I think he’d probably argue that he doesn’t deserve the issues I cause. I...” She hesitated again, taking a deep drink of the light dessert wine. It was sweet, and pretty, and the pianist didn’t drink but this was definitely the time for it. Frowning at the platter before them, the wisp of a woman reached out to take a neatly curled piece of cured ham and a slice of hard cheddar, raising them so Charlie could see them before taking a small bite.

Her stomach rejoiced, growling for it’s master to consume all of the delicacies. It was not happy when she seemed to nurse the rest of the bite sized piece in her hand. Darcy smiled again at the mention of Oliver, taking a sip of her wine.

“Did he now? No one else I can remember has ever called him Oli and come out the other side unscathed. Even mother and father.” Lowering the glass, she tucked her hair behind her ear with a soft laugh.

“You must be pretty special Charlie. If I’d ever known, perhaps as a child I may have been jealous, but as an adult...I think it’s sweet. You should visit him again, reintroduce yourself.” Even in her depressed and lost state, the younger blonde had her brother in mind. She recalled how hard Oliver could be sometimes, how much responsibility he wore on his shoulders regarding the Venora empire. Perhaps a friend, or something more, would be good for him.

“I just fear that if I see him, he will ask me so many questions that I cannot answer. For my own safety, and his sanity.” Looking down again, the blonde was almost surprised to see that her wine was nearly finished. Unlike the creeping, sinking feeling that the various narcotics she took seemed to create as they kicked in, the win instead made her feel lightheaded and slightly fuzzy. With no food to absorb even the small alcoholic content in the drink, it went immediately to her head.

“Oh my, I might not have another one of those.” She said with a slight laugh, finishing the glass anyway before pushing it towards the centre of the table. She took another bite of the food in her hand, instincts and self preservation over riding her lack of appetite.

“You’re too kind to me Charlie, and I say that with all honesty. I would love to talk but, some things I can’t...” Rubbing her arms, as though shielding herself from the past, Darcy turned her indigo gaze away.

“Bad things happened to me, a long time ago...and I didn’t...I haven’t coped.” Sighing heavily, she shook her head.

“I don’t drink, but I have other vices. Other things that let me forget all that...all the things that happened. It started simply enough, you know they give you some pretty amazing medications those healers. I just...everytime I take a hit I don’t think, I don’t feel, I just...it’s just...nothing.” Darcy’s voice was quiet and low, not wanting her voice to carry around the bar. She looked up at Charlie then, head fuzzy and cheeks warm.

“That’s why my friend left, I’m sure of it. I’m a broken, reevi addled mess. I came to his own home, high beyond anything I’ve ever done before. He was scared, I could see it. I told him...well...I said stupid things that I hope to the Seven he doesn’t repeat.” The Venora refrained from telling Charlie about the Sunshine she’d damn near died taking. The woman was, after all, still a Sergeant. Darcy blushed suddenly at that realisation.

“Sarding hell, I shouldn’t have told you that.” She said, putting her head in her hands again.

Fuck, she was a mess. A fates be damned mess.

Charlie flushed at Darcyanna's words, smiling a little at the memory of young Oliver Venora in her garden. Shaking her head, she refocused, telling herself now was not the time to indulge in childhood memories. Her focus needed to be on the woman opposite her. "If you have another, you should eat something more. We can get another drink, but make sure you have some more food. Here," she said, pushing the antipasto closer to Darcyanna. "You look starving."

Charlie leaned back in her chair, taking a sip of the cooling amber ale, such a different drink to the pink one Darcy had drained so quickly. The woman before her seemed to still be caught up in old memories, and she looked away from Charlie as she spoke, as if she could see them played out before her in the middle of the small bar. She wanted to say something, anything, but it seemed a better idea to let the girl exhaust herself before she interrupted.

Her heart sunk at the words that came forth from the Venora's lips. She had known, looking at the sunken eyes and skinny collarbones, that something was wrong, something seriously wrong. And hearing about the addictions that Darcy admitted to having, Charlie bit her lip and tried to think of what she could say. But she had no experience with this, no knowledge of addictions, never having craved anything to stop her from thinking. Suddenly, Charlie felt embarrassed for even thinking she could relate her own life to Darcy's. How could she? But maybe, maybe she could listen...

"It's okay," Charlie said, reaching out a hand to touch the woman's shoulder gently. "I'm glad you told me. I know it must have been hard, but thank you... for trusting me." Charlie paused. Where to begin? What could she say, to help this woman? "If that is why your friend left, Darcyanna, he is not a good friend at all. Honestly... fuck him." Charlie laughed a little, trying her best to get a smile from the woman before him.

"Look," she said, sighing, running a hand through her hair. "I don't know what I can do. But I want to help. I'm being stationed in Andaris ten trials from now, and I'd like... I'd like to be there, for you, if you wouldn't mind." The words came out of her in a rush. "Only if you want me to be, of course. But you should have someone there with you, someone who won't judge, Darcy. If you take too much, or you need someone to help you through the craving, or even just someone to sit there quietly with you... I'd like to help. You don't have to tell your brother until you are ready, but it doesn't mean you have to be alone."

Charlie couldn't explain why she was offering to help someone she had only just met. But one look at the thin, broken woman, and Charlie knew - she couldn't leave her.

Looking up at the food that came closer, Darcy reached out to pick at a piece of bread, not quite eating it but fiddling with the morsel instead. Her dull eyes didn’t lift again to look at the Sergeant, not until the brunette swore colourfully about her missing friend. It was so abrupt the Venora couldn’t help but burst out with a laugh.

“Sergeant Warrick! Such language.” Taking a deep breath, she sat up straighter and pushed her hair behind her ears with a slow sigh. Everything was a mess, a big sarding mess, but the time spent with Charlie had helped. Ironically, her abandoned visit to Oliver had turned the right corners. To meet someone familiar, someone she could talk to before doing something incredibly stupid.

Stupider than Sunshine at least.

“You’re being stationed at Andaris? That’s wonderful! I...it would mean a lot to have you close by Charlie. This has been...it’s been nice.” The blonde said with another smile, before it faded a little with guilt. The Sergeant shouldn’t have to feel responsible for the sister of a man she’d met as a child.

“It would be good just to have someone else. Someone who won’t disappear without even a note, or isn’t asking for my presence because they want what’s in my bag rather than my company. You would be surprised the amount of people in Andaris who enjoy a bit of...extra curricular activity.” Shaking her head, Darcy reached out with a pale tentative hand to touch Charlie’s again.

“Thank you Charlie, for taking a moment in time to show kindness to a stranger. I should probably take my leave soon, it’s a long trip back and...my friend..he might...he may come back? I don’t know.” Biting the inside of her lower lip, the Venora drew a few gold nel from her purse and placed them on the table.

“For the food and drink. It’s the least I can do. When you get to Andaris you absolutely must come to the University and find me. I reside in the Arts Wing, second floor, room thirteen.” The blonde said with genuine fondness, hoping to get to know the Warrick better when she was less of a mess.

“I’ll take you out next time, although nowhere in Andaris has this view.” She said, gesturing to the wide open doors that showed off the rolling wintery fields, either dressed in cold climate flowers or fruits.

Bellesoir truly was a spectacular place, and it deserved Darcyanna at her best, not at her worst. So did Charlie, and Oliver.

And Caius. If she saw him again.

Charlie inclined her head at Darcy, turning her palm to hold the Venora's hand briefly. "I mean it, Darcy. Anything you need. I will be there for you, and I will listen. I ..." She hesitated. But Darcyanna had been honest with Charlie. It deserved honesty in return. "To be truthful, I do not really have many friends outside of the Skyriders. My offer is a little selfish, honestly. It would be nice to have someone I can turn to, as well." Charlie smiled ruefully, before releasing the woman's hand.

"Absolutely," Charlie said, standing as the Venora did. "I promise you. I'm already looking forward to seeing you again, Darcy." She tried not to show her worry at Darcy's returning to the friend that abandoned her. But she hoped that she was wrong. "Darcy, if that is why he left...
just. Be careful with your heart. We only have the one, after all."
Charlie smiled weakly.

She was about to protest at the money on the table, but did not want to seem rude. "I'll return the favour next time. Second floor, room thirteen. I'll be there, Darcy. I promise." And she would. The girl deserved someone that she could trust, and Charlie was determined to be that person. Charlie stayed standing as she watched the woman leave. Sinking slowly down, she felt her heart sink.

Addiction. Grief. Loneliness. But what could Charlie do for her?

Draining her beer, Charlie jumped to her feet, and jogged outside. It was time to revisit her acquaintance with Oliver Venora.

Ugh. Charlie is so amazing in this thread, stepping in and making sure that Darcy is alright. And Darcy is really suffering, so close to home and yet still so far away. This whole story line is crazy good, but I'm a little biased.
