Silence and Shadows (Vivian)

Image
2nd of Saun, Arc 718

Rolling golden hills of grassland stood before the Lighting Knight. This was what the Stormlands of Rharne were known for; gorgeous sweeping landscapes bursting with life. In the distance, to the far north the woman might be able to spot a thin green line that signified the edge of the Ywyngyll Forest. A few curling plumes of smoke could also be seen to the northwest where farms were clustered around the township of Caervalle like huddled children.

But here Vivian was in the wilds of the Stormlands, and she was here for one very important reason. She had been chosen to capture a Zephyrus. These great cats were prized by the Lightning Knights and Thunder Priestesses of Rharne. They were a symbol of their strength and their patron Immortal’s command of Lighting. Zephyrus are massive felines that roam the wildernesses of Rharne. They possess sharp claws, massive fangs and a gleaming singular horn on their foreheads that can be used to launch electrical strikes at their prey to produce stunning effects. These cats are masterful hunters that also boast an impressive predatory intellect and they make excellent companions and mounts for specially chosen Lightning Knights.

It was near dusk when Vivian had arrived at the appointed meeting place on a lovely green hilltop. Jagged foothills lay behind her to the south, hiding the sea town of Volta just from view. Her contact and guide were riding out of Volta to meet her here and assist her with the capture of her new companion.

However it seemed that Vivian didn’t need to wait long as with utter silence a man in a stiff gray and azure coat stepped silently from the tall grass surrounding the hilltop. The exterior of his clothing was scratched with wear and use but the inner lining was the bright royal blue known to adorn the armor of many Lightning Knights. His face was hidden by a dark indigo kerchief and his head was covered in a steely colored cowl. Everything about this individual suggested that he was both a talented huntsman and an expert in stealth. An ash short bow rested on his back along with a quiver full of arrows, and at his waist was a sheathed longsword.

He circled around Vivian to allow her to catch sight of him before he spoke, his booted feet barely making a hint of sound as he walked.
“You must be Vivian.” He said with a smooth deep voice. It was hard to tell his age with his face concealed beneath the kerchief but he seemed to only bee a few years older than the woman.

“The name’s Rael .” he uttered gruffly with a pointed motion toward himself before gesturing toward a particularity tall stand of grass behind Vivian that shifted slightly as if moved by the wind.

“And this, this is Cera; do mind yourself around her.”

At the moment that he said her name, a massive dark shadow slipped her velvety nose from the grass to sample Vivian’s scent. After a couple trills the fully grown indigo and cerulean Zephyrus slinked from the foliage with even less sound than Rael had. Her footfalls were silent, even her swishing feathery tail barely ruffled the stalks of grass as she passed. Bright violet eyes peered at the Lighting Knight woman with a cold predator gaze. Her beautiful feline body dwarfed Vivian, and Cera was a female of her species; the males could be even larger and heavier. Cera purred contentedly while she circled back around toward her rider, and rubbed her neck affectionately against Rael’s shoulder, nearly knocking him sideways.

He chuckled at the cuddly predator before giving her a well-earned scratch between her long angular ears, being mindful not to touch the gleaming spire of a horn extending from the Zephyrus’s forehead.

“Their sweet enough if you train em right. Right girl?”

Cera purred rather happily in response.

At closer inspection Vivian would notice that the rather well behaved Zephyrus was outfitted with a lightweight harness and saddle that was equipped with straps and small carrying cases; suitable for someone like Rael that might be out in the field for extended periods of time. Cera was a lovely svelte thing, not at all like the musclebound males that Vivian may have seen passing through Rharne before. That was how things were with the Zephyrus, the males were larger and more powerful but the females were the hunters and they were perfectly suited for stealth. They lacked the conspicuous mane and saber teeth of their male counterparts but they were no less deadly.

Silence and Shadows (Vivian)

Image
Vivian held back her excitement as she walked up to the meeting point, eager to get started. She had seen several of the large, electric felines about the city, and when she had been given the chance to get one of herself, she hadn't been able to say yes fast enough. She was wearing her armor and had her sword and shield, though she doubted she'd need it for getting the cat. On the other hand, there were quite a few other threats in the Stormlands, and preparation never hurt anyone, after all.

When her guide appeared almost out of thing air, Vivian's hand lowered to her sword out of instinct, but when he spoke, she relaxed again. "Yes, I'm Vivian." she said, before turning in the direction he indicated. She let out a low whistle of appreciation as the indigo and cerulean colored zephyrus walked out of the grass. "Oh, she's beautiful." she said, her voice showing her barely constrained excitement. Vivian loved animals, she really did. The size, the body shape, the horn, and they could even be affectionate, though she noted the need to brace oneself if a zephyrus wanted to cuddle.

She noted the saddle, but she also noted the size difference to some of the ones she had seen before. "So the males are bigger, with the mane and the bigger teeth." she said, pondering in her head. "But I bet the females are quieter, better for stealth. If I had to guess, maybe even slightly faster." she said, her tone pondering. Granted, all things considered, she was probably looking for a male. Given her role in Rharne's military, and her typical fighting style, a male would probably be far more suited to her than a female.

Truth be told, she really wanted to pet Cera, but she figured if that were allowed, she'd have been given the offer by now. Besides, she was getting her own tonight, assuming she didn't screw this up. "So, I'm guessing you're here to provide guidance, but I'm going to be doing the actual legwork myself? Seems like it'd be the best way to start the bonding process, after all." she said, her tone serious. She was ready to get started, and it showed in her body language, but she'd wait until Rael said it was time or gave her some other instruction.

“Oh she knows she is lovely.” Rael said with a chuckle in response to Vivian as Cera purred with delight at the compliment. The felines spent so much time around their riders that it was no surprise that she seemed to immediately pick up on the meaning of Vivian’s words.

Rael pushed past Cera while the Zephyrus took up watch at the edge of the clearing.

“Aye, the fellas are big blokes and the ladies are the lovely hunters of the pride.” He said with a curious fondness clinging to his voice.

“The females are lighter and far better at sneaking up on their prey but I certainly wouldn’t want to face down a full grown male, they are brutal.”

Cera was suddenly very alert and had dropped to a crouch from her perch overlooking the sea of grass below. Her dark azure fur bristled faintly at her neck and she let out a low soft growl that sent her rider to attention.

“Yes, we will get you to the pride, and you will do the rest. It’s vital that you are the one that does the choosing” The Lightning Knight said firmly as he took off toward his Zephyrus and vaulted up into her saddle.

“And it seems that Cera had found them for us.” He said before looking back toward Vivian and extending his hand to her. There was just enough space for her on the elongated saddle behind him where it butted up against several leather packs. Clearly the apparatus had been made with passengers in mind.

“Hop on.”

Riding a Zephyrus was far different from riding a horse or and normal hooved land mount. These massive cats had a sharp rolling gait that constantly jostled the rider up and down. Upon seating herself in the saddle Vivian would find that there were a series of thick, easily releasable ties that she could attach to her calves, ensuring that she wouldn’t fall out as soon as they started moving. Cera also was not the sort of Zephyrus to go crashing through the underbrush like a bull. She crept forward in silence, her paws padding gently on the ground below.

Out in the distance the tall golden grass could be seen shifting around several shapes that were presumably members of a Zephyerus pride. Cera carried Rael and Vivian forward with a steady patience that might have eluded others of her species. She was calm and comfortable even in this situation.

“There are three cubs, we saw them yestertrial.” Rael whispered beneath his kerchief.

"Two boys and a girl, you will have you pick if you can get close enough.”

Vivian took in what Rael said about the Zephyrus, now pretty sure she was after a male of the species, as they suited her better. When Rael told her to hop on, she did, binding her legs in the same fashion Rael had before Cera took off. The cats gait was odder than a horses, but she figured it would be. After all, a cat was nothing like a horse in terms of body type, so of course the way it felt to ride one would be different, though it would take some getting used to before she was fully comfortable in saddle.

When Rael told her what kind of cubs were available, she nodded. "Good to know." she said, before nodding at her instructions. When Rael gave her the signal to get started, she slipped off the straps that were holding her on Cera's back and slid off the big cat. "Thanks for the ride, Cera." she said, smiling slightly at the cat, before she looked up at Rael. "Whelp, better get started." she said, heading into the underbrush. The knight was not, by nature, a quiet person, but for this she stayed her instinct to rush forward. Scaring the cubs or alerting the whole pride would not even remotely help her with this.

So she moved slowly through the brush, keeping an ear out for any possible signs that she had been spotted by the great cats. Eventually, she found her way through the underbrush to three small Zephyrus cubs, the two males and one female that Rael had told her about. Vivian watched the cubs for a bit and eventually, they spotted her. Two of them hissed and ran off towards the rest, but one of them, a blue male with scarlet streaks about his neck, approached her. He was bold and unafraid, but he didn't seem to be aggressive either. Reaching out, Vivian gathered lightning in her hand. The cat approached, his horn absorbing the lightning from her palm.

Eventually, the cat got close enough to rub his furry head against her hand. Eventually, he flopped onto his side in front of her, allowing her to pet him a bit. After a brief bit of this, she took a deep breath and picked up the Zephyrus cub, holding him in her arms. The cub nuzzled against her, but then a loud roar sounded from the rest of the pride. "Oh hell." she muttered under her breath. Vivian headed back into the bush and started heading back towards where she had left Rael and Cera. The cat she had chosen hissed at the roar behind them, evidently he didn't care much for his family. When the second roar sounded from much closer, however, Vivian dropped into a crouch and launched a lightning bolt into the brush away from her, hoping the electricity would draw her pursuer away.

Fortunately, the noise did get the prides attention, and Vivian used the gap to slip away towards where Rael and Cera were waiting. It took a while, since she kept pausing to make sure she wasn't being heard, and the sky was starting to grow dark when she made it back. When she did, she let out a sigh of relief and looked down at the Zephyrus cub who had fallen asleep in her arms. "He actually came to me. No fear in him, though he didn't seem to like the pride much." she said, letting out a weary laugh as she scritched the Zephyrus cub behind the ears. The cub started purring in response to the scritch and she looked up at Rael and smiled. "Let's get going, shall we?" she said, still holding the cub close.

Re: Silence and Shadows (Vivian)

Vivian finally has her Zephyrus cub! I'm sure she will have a blast giving him lots of snoogles! This was a quick thread but it gave me a chance to see Vivian in an unfamiliar setting. She seems to be more of a city girl, but her love of animals came through and she took the risk to earn a new companion. Great job!

You will find that as your Zephyrus grows that he is something of a diva and relishes in being spoiled by Vivian. He does not tolerate strangers well, and has a tenancy to snarl and paw at people he is unfamiliar with. It will take a great deal of training to keep this little one in check.
