7th Ymiden, 718
This trial was the Feast of the Heavens, and since it was an important festival, it was all that the kids wanted to talk about. The warm weather, and brilliantly clear skies did little to make her students any less restless. Later in the trial, she and her class would be baking something for the feast, and that would hopefully curb some of their energy. Or at least put it to good use. The kids were really looking forward to the experience, and it would be good for them to be able to contribute something to the festivities of the trial. Tei'serin just hoped that her lack of baking skills wouldn't hinder the group effort too much. She herself had never baked anything in her life...but how could she say no to something her students wanted to do so badly? She just couldn't, that was all. Maybe it wouldn't turn out as badly as she feared. She could hope, at least.
For now though, she had a spelling test to give the kids. In the attempt to make it a little more fun for them, she was doing it in the form of a spelling bee. That way, she had at least a small chance of getting her students to concentrate on the morning lesson. As she gazed out at her students, Tei'serin noticed that Sorin looked like he was ready for the spelling bee, even eager for it to begin. So she chose him first.
"Sorin, please spell phantom, and use it in a sentence."
She gave him one of the harder words since he was especially good at spelling. Sorin grinned at her as he stood.
"Phantom. P-h-a-n-t-o-m. Phantom."
"Very good, Sorin. And the sentence, please?"
"The story about the phantom that lives in the well is a scary one, and isn't suitable for little kids."
"Very good. You may sit down now."
Sorin beamed at her as he sat down.
Tarya was another of her older students, so she chose the sixteen arc old girl. She would be graduating this arc, so Tei'serin wanted to make certain that she learned everything that she could before she graduated. Spelling was a part of that. And having a wide vocabulary could only help her in her work as a trader, so she gave her one of the harder words as well.
"Tarya, please spell dullard."
Tarya stood and obeyed.
"Dullard. D-u-l-l-a-r-d." Dullard."
"And if you could use it in a sentence for us, please?"
"Only a dullard can't spell these words."
Tei'serin frowned at the girl. While the sentence showed the correct usage of the word, it was hardly nice to call anyone a dullard, and she told her student as much. Tarya apologized meekly to the class as she sat down.
The next word was wonderland. Tei'serin gave it to a boy named Sean. He was new to Treth, so he hadn't been her student for long. This was as much a test of his ability to spell as it was an expectation that he could handle the word since he was one of her older students. Although Sean was able to spell the word correctly, he wasn't able to think of a sentence to use it in. Tei'serin gave him half credit for his effort before asking him to sit down. He did so dejectedly. Myra was waving her hand eagerly, so Tei'serin grinned at her, and called on her next.
"Myra, please spell the word heartbeats, and use it in a sentence for us."
Myra frowned in concentration as she spoke.
"Heartbeats. H-e-a-r-t-b-e-a-t-s." she said at last.
Tei'serin nodded, and gently reminded her that she needed to use the word in a sentence too.
"Um...his heartbeats sounded louder than a drum as he hid in the corner, praying that no one would see him?"
Tei'serin nodded again.
"Yes, that is an appropriate use of the word, Myra. You may sit down."
One by one, Tei'serin ran through the words on her list. Then it was time for the last word; tango. Since it was one of the easier words on the test, she gave it to Cally, one of her younger students. The young girl froze for several bits as she desperately tried to remember how to spell the word. But she managed to do so correctly. Her sentence, "My parents like to tango." was a simple one, but still correct. And since Cally was only six arcs old, Tei'serin praised her for her efforts before asking her to sit down.
The children were getting even more restless now that the spelling bee was over, and Tei'serin knew that it was useless to try and teach them a normal lesson. So she simply gave them their homework assignments for the trial before calling an end to the class and telling them that it was time to start baking for the feast that the village would be holding later that evening.
