33rd Vhalar, 718

It's trials like this when you know that Vhalar is truly here. Lei'lira mused as she cleaned up the dishes from the morning meal.

The nights were cold, and the chill lingered well into the mornings, which had been crisp and cool for the last several trials. But as the trial progressed, the temperatures gradually warmed until the trials themselves were quite comfortable. Warm, but the heat of Saun was well and truly gone for another arc. Lei'lira loved trials like these.

A hunting horn sounded in the distance, and as Lei'lira dried her hands off, she wondered what the hunters were hunting. Sound could travel for quite some distance, and Lei'lira guessed that the hunters were in the Ywyngyll forest out to the west of Rharne. She wished them well in their hunt as her mind drifted off to another hunt that had taken place many arcs ago.

It was a crisp morning in Ashan, and people were gathering at her father's farm for the First Hunt. Lei'lira was nine, and her father had decided that she was old enough to come with them this arc. Lazuli was very excited about being allowed to come. Lei'lira wished that she could share her twin's enthusiasm. But she hated the idea of killing anything, even if she knew that people needed to hunt to eat. She didn't object to other people doing it...but she couldn't bear the thought of taking an innocent life herself. The animals they hunted had every bit as much right to live their lives in peace as she herself, did after all. Who was she to steal the life of another? And her imagination was all too ready to picture how terrified and confused an animal must be when people hunted it. How it must suffer as it tried to escape, and how much agony it must feel as it died in terror. No. Lei'lira knew that there was no way that she could cause an innocent creature to suffer in such a way.

But what choice did she have? The First Hunt took place in Warrick for a reason. Her own ancestor had started it. And as a Warrick, no one would understand that she couldn't bear to take the life of another, even if it was "just" an animal. Not even her father would understand, and he was the one who always told her that she could be whatever she wanted to be as long as she was willing to put in the work needed to fulfill her dreams, even if she was a noble.

So it was with sick dread that she waited for the signal to set out. When the hunt began, Lei'lira followed the others reluctantly. But it didn't take her long to realize that no one was paying any attention to her. They were all focused on the hunt...and Lei'lira used that to her advantage. She snuck off when her mother was peering into some bushes that had rustled promisingly.

After making her escape, Lei'lira found herself alone in the woods. It had rained recently, and she breathed deeply, enjoying the rich earthy scent in the air. Birds chirped to each other in the trees, going about their lives. Some of their calls were familiar to the young girl, and others were not. As she looked around, a small, brightly colored bird landed on the forest floor, not far from where she was standing. It had bright blue feathers with a white cap on its tiny head, and black bands on its wings.

Lei'lira watched it in fascination as it hopped around on the ground, searching for food; worms or bugs, she guessed, or perhaps seeds. When it noticed her, it cocked its head at her curiously, completely unafraid of her presence. After a while, it went back to what it was doing. Lei'lira watched it in awed amazement until it flew away once more. Once it was gone, she decided that her "hunt" had been successful after all. Instead of hunting for an animal to kill, she decided that she had been "hunting" for something she had never seen before...and she had found it. The bird had left a feather behind when it flew away, and Lei'lira bent down to pick it up. It would be her trophy from this hunt. With that thought in mind, she headed home.

Lei'lira smiled at the memory. Her parents had been frantic when they had discovered that she was missing, and she had been scolded soundly when they found her safely back at home. But even that had not been enough to dim her enjoyment of the trial. Instead, it had started a tradition of sorts. As a Warrick, she had to participate in the First Hunt each arc. But she was the one who chose what she was going to hunt. And rather than hunt for food, she would hunt for a glimpse of something she had never seen before.

"Are you okay?" Teia asked anxiously.

Lei'lira turned to see her friend watching her with concern. Liu'yerin and Ryu'lian stood behind her, and they looked concerned as well. Lei'lira nodded, and smiled to reassure them.

"I was just remembering something that happened when I was a child. It was a good memory."

Teia smiled.

"I think we will make a lot of good memories here, too."

Lei'lira nodded. Her friend was right, of course. And Lei'lira looked forward to doing so.

"Are the kids ready to get started on their chores?"

"They're all waiting in the living room to hear what they'll be doing this trial." Eri said as she appeared in the doorway.

Lei'lira smiled at the others.

"Then what are we waiting for?"

She led the others into the living room where the children were waiting for them. The kids waited expectantly while she took a few trills to think things over in her head. She knew that all of her kids would want to help; even Tiran and Taerin were starting to enter the phase where they wanted to "help" her. But it was important to make sure that she wasn't asking any of the children to do more than they could handle.

"Sai'ryl, I would like you and Kei'iru to take Tae'ryn, Teirue, Tiran, and Taerin and collect the eggs. Teirue can help you by holding the baskets while you work, but the twins are too young for that. They will want to help too, though, so maybe you can help them feed the chickens when you're done collecting the eggs?"

Sai'ryl nodded.

"We can do that." she promised as she grinned at Kei'iru.

They both liked the idea of being put in charge of the younger kids. Lei'lira turned to the older kids next.

"Lil'ari, if you and Evan could milk the cows, and feed both them, and the ox, that would be a big help."

The two children nodded.

"That leaves Eri, Ei'ryn, Ei'ryl, and I to muck out the stalls, and feed the horses, right?"

"I would like the four of you to help me with that, yes. But I would like it if you could feed the sheep first, and make certain that they are adjusting to their new home, I would appreciate it. That will give me time to inspect each of the stalls again."

They had been fine when Lei'lira had inspected them for loose nails and splinters that might hurt her horses before she ever put them into the stalls, but it never hurt to be absolutely certain that she hadn't missed anything.

"If you show me how to inspect the stalls, I can help you with that." Teia offered.

Lei'lira smiled, and nodded.

"Thanks, Teia." she said sincerely.

"I'd like to ride out and inspect the land, if that's okay. If we have an acre or two that would be good for crops, maybe we could consider growing more of our own food."

Lei'lira nodded again.

"If it does turn out that we have some good crop land, I will leave that part up to you. You know a lot more about growing crops than I do, and I have my hands full with the animals."

Ryu'lian grinned at her as he nodded in agreement.

"And I can watch Kaien, Mei'rune, and Ryl'ari while everyone else is working. If I tried to help out with the farm work, I would only get in the way." Liu'yerin said ruefully.

"Maybe, but watching the kids is just as important. If it makes you feel any better, you're much better with a needle and thread, or spinning wool than I am. We can teach you how to take care of the animals another time if it's something you're interested in."

Liu'yerin gave her friend a grateful smile for the attempt at making her feel better.

"And I can give you lessons in spinning and sewing in exchange." she offered.

"Then it's settled. And when we're all done with out chores, we can groom and exercise the horses and Scalvwing Steeds."

It was a bribe...but it was an effective one. The work had to be done one way or another, and everyone enjoyed helping with the horses. Why not use it as a reward for doing the rest of the farm chores?

Lei'lira inspected each of the stalls carefully, and was happy to learn that they were all safe for her horses. Once she was done with that, she took a few bits to pause, and watch her herd. The seven Scalvwing Steeds seemed to be getting along well with the horses as they grazed together peacefully. The horses accepted them readily enough, seeming to think that they were fellow horses despite the wings that the others had. It had taken a few trials for the horses to get over their nervousness at the strangeness of the Scalvoris Steeds's wings, but that could have just been the way they would have reacted to anything new. By the time they had left the farm in Saun, her new additions had been accepted by the herd, and Lei'lira was relieved to see that that hadn't changed.

It was still strange to see a blue or purple coat mixed among her herd, but it did serve as a reminder that one of the differences between Scalvwing Steeds and horses was that they came in many different colors. When she was working on the ranch in Egilrun, she had seen plenty of black, white, and grey Scalvwing Steeds, but there had been just as many blues, greens, and purples. Lei'lira allowed herself a few more trills to admire the beautiful animals before getting back to work.

Atreyas and the others had already started mucking out the stalls, and it wasn't fair to them for her to stand around and let them do all of the work. As she pitched in, she quickly found out that mucking out the stall of one of her Scalvwing Steeds was the same as mucking out any other stall; hard, dirty work.

But like with any type of work, the more people working at it, the faster it was done. When they were finished mucking out the stalls, Lei'lira sent the kids to get the grooming supplies while she and Teia rinsed out the buckets they'd used to muck out the stalls.

"The kids really seem to be enjoying farm life, aren't they?"

Lei'lira nodded.

"Some of them are used to it, so it's familiar to them. But even the others seem to enjoy it. And I'm glad. Farming in general is a good trade to get into. Good, hard, honest work that produces something valuable at the end of the trial. Breeding horses is just as important. And it feels good to know that some trial when I am too old to keep working the farm, I will have someone I can trust to leave it to."

It was Teia's turn to nod.

"That trial won't come any rime soon, fortunately. And I think you promised to let the kids help groom and exercise the horses after they finished their chores?" Teia asked with a grin.

Lei'lira laughed. It felt good to laugh.

"We'd better get going. Knowing them, they will start without us if they think we're taking too long."

The kids were all waiting for them when they arrived at the pasture. They were watching the horses and Scalvwing Steeds play. Two of the Scalvwing Steeds were rolling in the grass while a third was blowing at the water in the trough, creating ripples in it. It was clear that they enjoyed playing as much as any horse did. Lei'lira was glad to see it.

Atreyas handed each of the adults a curry comb, and Lei'lira told the kids to pick out which horses they wanted to groom first. The older kids moved to help the younger ones without having to be told, and it warmed Lei'lira's heart to see it. They really were coming together as one big family. After a few trills, she walked over to one of the Scalvwing Steeds. The mare nuzzled the brush in her hand before settling down to be groomed. When it came time for her to groom the mare's wings, Lei'lira could see how much the mare loved it. If she were a cat, she would be purring loudly.

With as many people grooming the horses as they had, even the large number that needed to be groomed were dealt with quickly. Lei'lira watched as the kids ran to put the grooming supplies away, talking excitedly about which horses they wanted to ride as they went.
