History: This oversized abomination is perhaps one of the least understood creatures in yaralon due to it’s reclusive nature and the depth at which it usually stays. Only a handful of these fish have ever been caught with rather unpleasant results. The rot fish is assumed to be undead for a myriad of reasons for starters the smell of one of these creatures is more rancid than a week old battlefield. Furthermore it’s eyes and whole body is covered in a viscous slimy film that speeds the rotting process of anything it touches. Lastly they are almost always covered in half healed wounds that never seem to change. On the few occasions these fish have been caught entire crews responsible for the catch have found themselves near dead from disease and illnesses from interacting with the rot fin. However the guts of the rot fin were discovered to be filled with gold and other various treasures. However the cost of such a catch was hardly worth the bounty it hauled in. Thus rot fin’s are considered to be a symbol of bad luck, and jobs that look like they are more trouble than they are worth are occasionally compared to them thusly.
Appearance: these overgrown fish come in mottled greens and beiges but always in sickly tones. They are covered in red markings that look like open wounds or sores but don’t appear to bleed, and they have similarly dark markings that look like blood or ichor coming from their eyes. Similarly their eyes range from black to dark red
Habitat: These deep sea creatures live their entire lives in the depths of Yari waters only coming near the surface on rare occasions for particularly choice meals. Not much is known of where these fish live as nobody has pursued them to find out.
Lifespan and Development: It is assumed they are birthed from eggs (and that’s true)
As far as lifespan goes upon hatching from a clutch of about 20-30 siblings those that hatch almost always immediately consume the remaining eggs, most clutches bear 1-3 surviving hatchlings which start life at almost a foot in lengthAfter which their life trawling the bottom of the sea begins as they swim mouth agape consuming and rotting anything that winds up inside of it’s gaping maw.
The rot fins reach puberty and are capable of breeding by their third year. However they never reach true maturity. The scariest part of the rot fin’s nature is their never ending growth or ending life span. These trawlers infinitely growing as they age. Luckily they don’t surface often and breed even less often due to their loner and territorial nature.
Diet: Literally anything that ends up in their mouths, with the exceptions of gold and magically protected artifacts. Anything else is rotted into much and digested by these behemoths of the deep. They constantly trawl the bottoms of the sea showing no preference for what ends up inside of them including each other.
Temperament: Docile they have no natural predators than each other so generally they just mill about eating that which they can. It is rumored that there is one large enough to eat ships that has done so however nobody that’s seen it has lived to tell of it.
Abilities: Effectively immortal, Super fast scar tissue regeneration, Resistant to disease. Their covering film and digestive slime is highly toxic and filled with all manner of bacteria capable of corroding flesh and steel alike.
