The cottage was out of the way idyllically set in the hills a couple hours beyond the river. It was the hereditary home to some shepherds. Gennadiya knelt next to the laboring mother. The mother was breathing hard as she pushed again. The young healer knew that the mother was doing great and that soon this newborn would fully enter the world. The water had just broken and already the Lyosian woman could see the nose and of little creature.
“We need to help her.” A tenor voice said from besides her, concern dripping in the voice. Even as the man spoke he reached out to help. Genadiya’s gloved hands reached grabbed the young man’s and she turned to look at him nose to nose. “It is healthiest for the mother and child if you let them do the work. If something goes wrong then we help” Her blue eyes looked intently, but kindly at the shepherd as he pulled back his hands and continued to watch. Satisfied Gennadiya turned back and comforted the mother as another contraction came.
As predicted the delivered came to a quick close as the little lamb was firmly pushed out and found itself on the cold ground. Gennadiya then stepped in and looked over the gooey creature while trying to keep minimal involvement in the creature’s instinctual responses. She looked over at the young shepherd, Tuliard, and then looked over at his pregnant sister, who was normally Gennadiya’s patient. A couple seasons earlier the families patriarch had died of sudden heart failure leaving the brother and sister in charge. Yendalla did have a husband, but he was gone working often so it was up to her to watch her younger brother who was eager to be a shepherd but was still learning.
The young healer stood and stripped off her gloves and carefully placed them in her medical kit so that she could get them cleaned later. She left the young man to coo over the ewe and her lamb as she walked over to her real patient. “Now that, that has been taken care of let’s check up with you.”
Yendalla laughed and lead Gennadiya back into their house. She sat down as Gennadiya checked her pulse. The young doctor quietly counted to herself as the two of them sat in that one side awkward silence happens when the doctor is lost in their own world. “Your blood pressure is doing well. Lets get you on the couch to make sure the baby is okay.”
Once the request was complied with Gennadiya carefully exposed the woman’s swollen abdomen and using a measuring string checked out the woman’s womb size and looked at it before nodding. “You growth is normal. Have you felt the baby move a lot.” Gennadiya asked as she returned the string to her bag and then carefully placed her hands on the womb.
“Oh yes I feel her kicking especially right after I eat.” Yendalla said waving her hand to indicate there was nothing to worry about. “This morning she was kicking faster than a country dance.”
Gennadiya smiled at her patient but kept her hands in place counting the kicks from the baby. Yendalla continued to chat as they waited. Gennadiya wished there was some way to actually hear the heartbeat of a baby well but for now this was the best option. Once she felt comfortable she removed her hands and nodded. “Well baby is looking well. Now how are you feeling Yendalla?” Gennadiya listened and taking mental notes as the woman explained about the back pain, normal, her stomach rebelling, normal. She didn’t have any fainting spells, excellent and so the list continued. “Tell your brother that if you are craving something you need to eat it. Unless its something odd like chalk. Then you need to get to Rharne so we can keep an eye on you.”
“Tuliard couldn’t keep milk from curdling. If I want something to eat I have to make it.” Yendalla snorted.
“Well if you lived in the city you could just buy it from a shop.” Gennadiya teased. It was an old joke between them.
“If I lived in the city I would be run over by all those carts.” Yendalla laughed.
“In all seriousness though if you want me or another member of the Order at the birth then you will need to come to Rharne or at least a village close enough to get us a message faster.” Gennaidya said calmly.
“I know. My mother in law will be here in a couple trials to help me make the trip.” Yendalla said with her signature way of the hands.
“Good. Now I need to get back to the river in time to catch a boat.” Gennadiya said coming up and giving the young woman a hug.
The two siblings both followed her to the yard gate and waved her away as she started down the track to the river. Gennadiya enjoyed the walk across the country. The blond woman was a city girl, but she enjoyed going out and visiting the farms around Rharne. The rolling hills for pastures or the fields and vineyards growing plants was new and different enough that it added some verity to her life. There was also a cleanness to walking in the dirt and mud. The city had both as well, and other disgusting refuse.
Gennadiya walked for about an half a break before she could see the village of Caervalle. She saw how late it was in the trial and figured she would have to spend the night here in the inn. The healer moved quickly wanting to get out of the cold and the twilight.
Gennadiya entered the center of town and would have made straight for the Inn when she noticed and old woman in the middle of the square. Gennadiya paused as and watched as the woman spoke to someone holding something out to the person. The woman just ignored her and walked on. Gennadiya sighed at the prejudice of other people and then walked over to the elderly woman.
"Hello. Is there something I can help you with?" the healer asked as she came up next to the old woman. Even Gennadiya had to admit the woman was old and time had not treated her well.
"I am cold and tired and looking for shelter for the evening." The old woman said looking up. Gennadiya could sense something in the woman’s eyes, but it wasn’t madness, and the woman was just old, and the young woman wasn’t particular worried about dieses. Besides even if she was Gennadiya could have turned her away.
“Well I am about to take a room at the Inn and you are certainly welcome to join me.” Gennadiya offered the elderly woman.
“Thank you kind lady.” The old woman said and tried to hand Gennadiya one of her perfect roses. “Please take one as payment.” Gennadiya at first tried to turn it away, but then paused realizing what season it was. She took the rose her eyebrows coming together in concentration. In that brief moment she would was fairly sure it was a living rose, but now, at this time.
“Why thank you.” Gennadiya said as she turned away from studying the rose. “My name is Gennadiya,” the blond woman said as she held out her arm to support the older woman. The older woman took her arm but didn’t offer a name in response to Genna’s introduction. Gennadiya walked slowly towards the Inn feeling a bit like a juggler. On one arm she helped the elderly lady as the slowly walked, in the other she held the posed and had her medical bag which seemed to be growing heavier.
Eventually she made it through the front door and helped to women sit down at a table. Carefully placing the flower in her bag she set said bag on the other chair and walked over to the Inn keeper. He was staring at the older woman as Gennadiya approached. The young woman stepped in front of the man forcing his gaze to move away from the ugly woman.
“Good Sunrise sir, I need a room for two and dinner for the same number.” The man looked at her as if the sight of her was a relief to his eyes. He smile broadly as if trying to apologies for staring.
“I can help you with that Mam,” He said and scurried off to get them some of the simple soap that was for dinner.
Gennadiya returned back to her seat and looked at the woman and smiled. “Are you feeling warmer?”
“Yes, thank you.” The older woman said and then grew quiet.
Gennadiya sat looking at the woman. She suspected that the woman had cataracts that would explain why her eyes were white, but something about the gaze seemed to indicate they weren’t as bad or she had just become really good and dealing with a hole in the middle of her vision.
“May I ask where you got the roses from?” The healer asked.
“You do ask a lot of questions.” The older woman said in her raspy voice.
“I heal people, we do that a lot.” Gennadiya said, luckily then the owner brought over their food. He whispered then to Gennadiya.
“Is she okay.”
“Yes she is just old.” Gennadiya said trying desperately not to roll her eyes. Sometimes disease could make you look older then you were, but so did working out in the sun regularly. She understood for these simple people they needed to be careful and so she smiled at him instead of rolling her eyes.
The cook nodded leaving Gennadiya to a very quiet dinner with a weird old lady.
