57 Ashan, Arc 719

“Wh-what do you mean she ran away?” asked Zarik, his voice raising to a shout. “Where to?!”

“I’m not sure, Lord Venora,” answered the headmistress of the orphanage. “The gateworkers saw her and a couple other of the children head northwest.”

Northwest meant the far coast, the strip of beach that was mostly untouched and next to the dangers of wilderness. Zarik shook his head and said, “Why haven’t you sent anyone after them?”

“I only found out just before you arrived,” she insisted. “We were about to put together a group. I didn't expect you to arrive so soon in the day. And… I… found this.”

Zarik took the piece of parchment from the woman. He looked at scribbles of a child’s penmanship that were illegible next to what looked like a small map. “Is this where they are going?”

“I think so, one of the boys said that Hazel has been planning on…”

“On what? What is it?” asked Zarik, encouraging the woman to finish the sentence.

“On a hunt.”

“They’ve gone hunting, alone?” He shook his head.

“I told them they couldn’t, that they needed to focus on helping in the village. But Hazel, as you know, her uncle used to take her out, she helped him with his trapping, so… it’s been difficult for her, but I didn’t think she’d… simply go like this.”

“I’ll find them,” said Zarik. He pocketed the parchment in his silver surcoat.

“Did you want me to gather some of the others to help, Lord Venora?”

“No, no… watch the other children and make sure no more stray,” he answered. “If I’m not back by morning, then send a search party.”

He didn’t wait to listen to her agreement. Zarik turned swiftly on heel, then left the orphanage through the front doors. He hurried with a fast clip in his pace, through the streets of Marcovera, out the gates that were almost finished being rebuilt, and along the path over a grassy knoll. He knew, roughly, where he was headed. Zarik broke into a sprint, his crystalline legs sent him fast over the terrain. In several bits, he found himself near the mouth of a cave.

Zarik took a deep breath, then he called out, “Fridgar?! Dosan? Are either of you in there? I require your aid.”

He detected movement to the side. Zarik turned and looked down the other way of the shore. He caught sight of a familiar man. He waved immediately upon sight of the Quacian. “Dosan! Thank the gods you’re here.”

The biqaj ran over and his translucent wings fluttered behind him. Whether obvious or not, Zarik’s features were softer than usual. His blond hair was golden in the sunlight rather than icy pale, and no Mark of Faith adorned his forehead. He said, “Some orphans from Marcovera have gone to the far side coast to hunt alone, and I fear they might not be able to find their way back before night falls. I thought perhaps if Fridgar could smell them or… is he not here? Will you help me track them down, please?”

☵ The viper had been along the beaches of Koros, near the cave he and Frid were staying in. His mate was away for a bit so he decided to keep himself occupied with training. He didnt want to lose any of the strength he had gained over the trials.

The viper was fairly used to the weapon now and had a good grasp of how to use it effectively in battle. He was good with it now, having used it in training with Frid, and during that battle with the guilds. So he didnt think he needed all that much training, but it helped keep his mind off worrying for Frid.

It's not like he needed to, the man was a revealed mage and a powerful one at that. He always felt silly worrying for the Protean, but he couldnt help it, he saw Frid as someone special to him, despite if the feelings weren't reciprocated. This all swirled in his mind as he trained, practicing sword swings, trying to make them more serpent-like in nature.

Immediately he felt a presence, his predatorial senses kicking in, someone was coming. Turning he saw a figure in the distance, their features blurred by how far they were from him. The voice itself seemed familiar but he still wasn't sure who it was. As the person got closer, the scent became clear.

Surprised serpent eyes looked as the blonde approached, frantic it seemed and seeking help. Hearing the situation Dosan nodded and went to grab some clothes before returning with his sword in hand.
"Lets go save some kids Zarik."

Zarik sighed, a moment’s relief when Dosan merely nodded in agreement to help. He fidgeted, carelessly picking at his fingernails while he waited as the Quacian got ready in quick time to join him. As soon as the other Becomer was at his side, he started on their path along the coastal line. “They went northwest from Marcovera, or that is what the workers said.”

He kept at a fast pace, and he said, “Th-they probably are fine. I’m sure. Children are excellent at taking care of themselves sometimes, especially ones willing to go out into the wilderness like this. Maybe they already started on their way back to the town.” Though he said it, almost rambling, his voice wavered, and he didn’t sound certain. In the pit of his stomach, Zarik had a terrible feeling. He knew the only way to be rid of it was to find the children as quick as possible.

“I don’t have any useful totems for this,” he mentioned – and even if he did, he couldn’t change out of his current form, not without threatening the potential life growing inside of his current blended body. He wanted to be absolutely sure that he didn’t accidentally ruin the process by transforming. Zarik looked over at Dosan and asked, “Do you have any? Perhaps something that could fly and help locate them quicker? I can run along the coast if you want to fly inward or… something else you might have?”

Zarik picked up his pace more so, then, as he started to jog along the spot where the sand turned to grass. He scanned their surroundings, looking past boulders and trees, to catch sight of any small moving bodies. The blond called out in a desperate hope that the orphan would be close enough to hear and respond. “Hazel?! Where are you?”

☵ Dosan looked to Zarik, seeing the worry in the biqaj's eyes, hearing the concern in his voice. He really did care for these people, which the viper found admirable at best. He placed a hand on his shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze.
"It will be ok I'm sure, we'll find them."

He hoped his words helped ease the worry in his friend as they searched. In the time they had been moving along the beach Dosan was using the bloodvision of his first totem, scanning the area for signs of life. When Zarik spoke of not having any the viper quirked his head in surprise.

"I had no idea you were a becomer now, who initiated you.......Fridgar?"
he asked, curious as to who it was that gave him the spark. Though not waiting for the man's answer, he tapped into the echo of the Nemician Stalker totem and leaped quite a distance ahead, hoping to scout the area for the children.

Part of the viper was truly concerned with the kids, he honestly could care less. Besides, Zarik said it himself that they did things like this usually, so why worry. But he wanted to help, even if he didnt care. As looked along the shoreline he spotted a couldnt of red fleck in the distance. And as he approached it became clear of the figures.

Several small red bodies were grouped together, and he could hear the snarling of beasts in the distance. This had to be them, and from where he left Zarik, they were at least another 30 bits away from them. Rushing back he, leaping across the terrain, he landed next to Zarik as he was running along the beach.

"They arent oo far up ahead, they are safe for now, but i dont know for how long, lets hurry!"

Zarik tried to allow the other man to ease him, but he found it difficult. He had arrived in hope to simply spend some nice time with the orphans, make sure the newly acquired resources of Marcovera were being consolidated correctly, and to start the paperwork for legal adoption of Hazel. The latter of which was likely unnecessary, but he still wanted a record of it regardless… in the case of future misfortune.

“Oh,” said Zarik when asked about initiation. He’d forgotten that he hadn’t seen Dosan in such a time that he’d initiated between their visits. Briefly, he thought of the last encounter he had with the Protean – the injured Stekir – and the hatred for him that had been unveiled finally. Zarik murmured, “No, it wasn’t Fridgar.”

It didn’t matter so much though because Dosan leaped ahead. The Biqaj ran along, still surveying his gaze over their surroundings. He caught sight of a shadow, but found it was just a rock among the grass. His search wasn’t going well and he called out a few more times, his concern and fear rising with each unanswered shout.

Zarik momentarily stopped in his sprint when Dosan returned in a rush. He started again, however, as soon as it was shared that the children were up ahead. “For how long!? What is it?”

He kicked his heels up, faster, and his wings fluttered. Lifted by swift flickering of his gossamer wings, Zarik suddenly sped forward at a quicker speed than he could ever run. He could barely control it, however. He crossed the coast so fast that he soon saw the children huddled on a jutted rock in the middle of a cliff beside a shallow tide that led into the ocean.

There were five orphans. All but one huddled to each another, feet trying to keep the crumbling rock edge from giving way under their combined weight. He recognized Hazel, and she looked to be the oldest. She, also, was trying to climb to a higher rock – presumably so she could help lift the younger boys so they could get farther away and perhaps escape once at the top of the cliff.

Below them, stalking through the seafoam and trying to find a way to follow up the cliffside, a pack of Saltfetchers had gathered.

Zarik’s heart sunk. He landed in a somersault roll against the sand, the momentum out of his control and the landing rough. It gained the attention of one of the children who pointed and cried out. Zarik hurriedly got to his feet. He had a dagger hidden under his surcoat, but what good would that do against a Saltfetcher? Devin wasn’t with him, left to navigate newfound sentience. Zarik scrambled away when he saw one of the monsters notice him as well.

He swore lowly, his mind racing with potential ways to subdue the multiple deadly beasts. "Hazel, stay where you are! Don't try to climb any more." Zarik glanced to see where Dosan had gone. He didn't have to worry about the beasts understanding what he told the other man and called out, “Hope you can fight, Mister Saito! Keep them distracted from the children... let's round the 'fetchers up on the shoreline.”

Zarik placed a hand on his own clothing. Ambient ether rose around him, iridescent as if reflecting the sunlight, and what had been fabric bolstered into the stiff quality of armored steel. He held out a hand, gathered ether in the palm and prepared as two of the Saltfetchers broke away in a rushed charge in his direction. By the ferocity of their movements, it seemed as if they had the desperation of monsters who were starving. He started to move backward, to guide them away from the tide pool and onto the coastal shore.

☵ Dosan watched as Zarik began to run then......fly? Did he sprout wings since the last time they were together? Seems everyone was gaining something new on Helice. In any case, he followed behind the blonde leaping over the distance, seeing the children as they tried to escape the monsters.

His main priority was keeping those kids safe. So He needed to place himself between the kids and the sea beasts as quickly as possible. By the looks of the foaming water, it would reach up to his waist, which meant moving in the water would be hindered. Then it hit him, he could use that rune. When he thought of the idea the white snake hissed in his ear playfully. He began to etch the Mark of Prowess into the back of his left hand.

【"Ooooo rip this disssssgussssting beastsss to shredssssss!"】It hissed, snickering in his ear as he realized he could cut loose a bit. With a nod he drew the mark on his sword hand, making sure not to screw up the design. When he finished both imaginary snakes hissed in delight, and he went forward, feeding off the invigoration of the mark and the power he believed it gave him.

With a leap, he landed right next to one of the monsters, and with his sword arm arched, he bisected the beast in half with one swing. The force was more than he thought it would be, and he could feel the immediate strain on his forearm, but the adrenaline from the newly gained strength made up for the pain. With a devious look, he began to tear through the monsters, his blade gliding through them like hot steel through butter.

he didnt even realize that he could have looked to be more of a monster than the saltfetcher, but he was having the time of his life, so much so he didnt care. He continued to hack through them one by one, till the rest seemed to retreat from sheer bloodlust he was exuding. That was not fair to the viper and he wanted more, and seeing Zarik had some of his own to deal with he decided to give his friend some help.

Leaping out of the water, he came crashing down on one of the beasts that were charged, driving his blade into its skull and forcing it to the ground with great force. Rolling out of that stab he launched the Chokoto at the other.
"Zarik duck!!!!"
he yelled as the blade went soaring from his rune enhanced arm and straight through the saltfetcher. The beast ran and then collapsed onto the sand sliding to a halt.

Dosan let out a sigh of relief then fell to the sand himself. The black-headed snake peered around his shoulder and hissed in his ear. 〖"Now that wasssss fun wasssn't it?"〗it commended, to which the viper chuckled, sitting up and watching just to make sure no more of those damn creatures came back. The one closest to him he decided to make a totem of, his spark excited for the new acquisition.

As Zarik would check on the kids, Dosan would be making a new necklace totem out of the sea beast, watching for more. ☵
Mark of Prowess
A slash in the shape of a cosmic star identifies the Mark of Prowess.

Believed to be a fleshy sigil which allows the Wounded God to funnel power into the person who possesses it, the Mark of Prowess supposedly grants a greater degree of skill and ability to its user. Typically, this increase in skill exerts itself in a martial competence, though it may also apply to less violent works such as artistic pursuits or craftsmanship.

This had the makings of a decent thread, it's too bad it was cut short just as things were getting tense with they just about to find the kids when they were set upon.

But such things happen, enjoy the points you two.
