There is Always a Trace

Arc 712, Ymiden 12
"What are we practicing today papa?"

It was a given that if the fledgling huntress was being sent out with her father, it was a lesson. He'd likely spent the night before discussing with his familiar what they would cover.

"And is Degotoga with us?"

Awo'san glanced back at his daughter, before offering her one of his slow smiles and looking ahead into the Makubwa Lori.

"Yes, he is with us."

He extended his right hand, fingers tangling in the fur of the great bear that was his familiar. Degotoga was an old spirit, old and wise, a fast friend to his bonded. Tose of course, saw none of this, beyond her fathers hand reaching out, but it was enough. She was used to those around her interacting with creatures she could not see, hear or feel. What would be madness in many parts of Idalos was commonplace in Desnind. The great bear did not always actively accompany his bond during a hunt, but he often did when the man was also teaching, helping to keep an eye out for the many dangers that lurked in the Makubwa Lori while his bondeds attention was split.

"Good morning Degotoga, thank you for lending us your aid."

For the most part, neither she nor any of the others tried to interact with someone elses familiar, but since those of her mother and father had been around, helping them keep track of their daughter and watch over her since infancy, Tose felt she owed them as much recognition and politeness as she could manage.

"And we will be working on your tracking. You have improved, but I think you are doing it intuitively, which is good, maybe best, but you must know what you are doing and why, so if intuition fails you, you have knowledge to depend upon."

"Yes papa."

"First, you know we hunt at any time of day, depending upon what prey we are after. Obviously for true tracking, daylight hours are best, but if stealth is not an issue, even night with a good lantern is better than high noon."

"I don't understand, is it not better with more light?"

"For best tracking, you need light and shadow. This is why at night for a lantern is sometimes easier, the shadows are exaggerated. But this is more for finding one who is lost. Obviously if you were hunting your fire would be seen and scented and your prey would easily evade you."

Tose thought about this, brow furrowing. why would you need shadow? Often under the great tree canopy you wished for more light, rarely less. Her father remained silent. This was often how he taught. He gave information, and thenhe waited patiently for her to digest and understand it. If she remained stumped for too long he would elaborate, but he felt that knowledge one came to on ones own was retained better than that which was simply given.

"Because.. it helps pick out the contours? Helps show you indents or ridges that without shadow you might miss when colour is all the same?"

"Just so! Good! It is not a problem we have often, within the Makubwa Lori there are almost always shadows, but if you have need of hunting elsewhere.."

She nodded, understanding. When her familiar set her upon her quest, if it led her far from home, her father would see to it that she was prepared.

They reached a stream that wanted to be a river, but wasn't quite. It was well known to the girl as it was close enough to Desnind that children were often allowed here to play in the waters. No one was present at the moment, but this was not surprising, it was later in the day as people got hot that they would want to come here to splash and play. Tose curled her toes in remembrance of many happy breaks here with the cool clear water running over her feet.

"What tracks do you see?"

She looked at the ground. There were many, and often well defined in the muddier spots, but..

"Mostly ours. Sev'ryn I mean."

"Just so. I brought you here because the tracks are many and they are easy to read. You need a stick, a little higher than your waist is safest."

This said he crossed his arms, assuming his waiting stance. She knew from experience that he could maintain it for breaks. She wouldn't have been surprised if he could stand unmoving for Trials, like one of the great trees of the Makubwa Lori. There were many saplings that were the perfect height and would likely do for what he wanted, but that would be nearly as bad as cutting down a tree without first checking with the elders and making sure you had a plan to use every part of it. Casting her eyes about, Tose saw no convenient fallen wood on the ground, but she did see a tree that looked as if it would be climbable and had some dead branches further up. It was small compared to some of the giants of the Makubwa Lori, though many times her height, Tose figured she would be able to wrap her arms all the way around it if she tried.

Eyeing it, she figured the lowest branch to be just out of her reach, but if she jumped she thought maybe.. Doing was learning, so she backed a bit further away and took a running start, jumping, arms outstretched. This would be much easier were she taller, but she was not. Her fingertips hit the branch and she immediately tightened the tendons in her hands, she didn't have a good grip, but she had a grip even if it was just her fingers and not her hands.

There was still momentum causing her to swing back and forth, so might as well use it rather than letting it dump her to the ground, she let go with one hand, immediately bringing it back on the other side of the branch so she was now facing in towards the trunk. With each swing she inched one of her hands a little further up until the rough bark was on her palms and straining fingers were given a break. Then feet were raised and walked up the trunk, soon wrapping around the branch. This done it took a bit of scrabbling to get herself up right and sitting on it, where she took a moment to catch her breath.

The next bit of climbing was easier, the branches closer together. It wasn't long before she was on a relatively solid branch, just starting to show some signs of succumbing to whatever the other dead branches had died of. Tose assigned blame to Lisarras plague in an off-hand manner. As long as it wasn't the sort of sickness that spread to all the other trees no one would fuss too much about it. All things died eventually. As long as too many didn't die out of turn it was all right. The tree might die, if it was still usable the Sev'ryn would harvest it and it would in its own way be reincarnated as a myriad of useful things. If it wasn't it would be burnt and provide warmth and help cook food, and if it was unsuitable even for that it would be left and would make a home for bugs and would decompose and other life would grow from it. Such was the way of things.

This branch was not her target however. Firstly it was too thick, and secondly it wasn't fully dead yet. It might recover. The branch above it though, was quite straight, no thicker than the width of two thumbs and undeniably dead.

Standing carefully, Tose edged further out on her current branch. Beneath her, unnoticed, her father padded carefully and quietly out so that he was beneath her before resuming his waiting stance. Just in case. The branch was bending with each step, careful as she was, and a slight creaking noise made itself known. Judging that she was far enough out that the branch she wanted was thin enough to break, she halted. Reaching up carefully, moving slowly, sweat starting to bead on her brow and trying to think light thoughts, she took hold of it with both hands, leaving about another fist between them. With her right hand, the one nearest the trunk, she pushed up slightly, trying to hold it steady. Her left she brought down quickly. For a moment she didn't think that it would break. Perhaps it wasn't as dead as it looked, but then with a sharp crack, it came free. The suddenness of it, jolted her, throwing her balance off, and she leaned dangerously backwards. Hand clutching the broken branch pinwheeled, and brought her forward just enough that she could throw herself face first into the trunk, clutching it and breathing hard. She was high enough that a fall while likely not deadly unless she was very unlucky, could easily have broken something.

The rough bark dug into her skin, but for the moment she didn't mind.

"Center yourself Tose."

Awo'sans voice floated up, calm and even. You'd hardly have guessed from hearing it the surge of adrenaline she'd given him when it looked like she was falling. Of course it hadn't been the first and it likely wouldn't be the last.

Tose blew out through her mouth in an even stream, fully emptying her lungs, expelling any panic or disquiet that might lurk within. Breathe in the scents of the Makubwa Lori. Good clean air. Slow your heart. Everything is fine. Be calm and steady. She gave herself about a bit of this even breathing before she began her descent. Down was easier, but with one hand occupied with the stick, it still took some concentration. Finally, she dropped from the lowest branch down onto the ground, knees bending as she did. Better to fall on her behind than to try and land straight legged. She kept her feet though, which she was glad of, before turning to face her father, stick raised in victory.

"Good."

He commented with a nod.

There is Always a Trace

"Now, find a good clear set of tracks."

Obediently she studied the ground, often there would be one perfect print, but then they disappeared or were messy and smudged. A few bits of searching however turned up a set even the most novice tracker could follow for a fair distance.

"Here."

She said, indicating her find. Awo'san approached, giving the tracks a slow considering look over before nodding in approval once more.

"Now, line the end of the stick up with the heel of the print. Move the stick so it goes through the center of the next print. Set it down. Now with either charcoal if you had it, or a notch made with your knife, mark the spot on the stick that's about halfway through the second print."

Tose did as he instructed, notching her stick.

"Now you have the rough stride of what you're tracking. You can use it to find the range the next step should be in when the prints are less clear. Of course if they change their pace, for instance start running, it will change. You may wind up with more than one mark on your stick. It gives you somewhere to start searching however."

One hand rose to stroke his chin absentmindedly as he thought of what else to add.

"For a hunt that truly matters, it is best to have three trackers. One with the stick, two on either side to range ahead and search for trace should the tracks falter. When the Center point, the tracker with the stick falters, both of the wing-hunters are sent out in a wide arc to see if they can pick up the trail up ahead. They must be careful not to accidentally ruin track. This way, with the center staying with the last known track, what you have already is not lost. The Wing-Hunters also help keep the Center safe, for it takes much intense concentration to be the Center, and you may be less aware of your surroundings. This is also why on a longer hunt it is good to trade out positions every break or so. All of this is possible alone of course, but you must take more care to be aware of both the trace you follow and your surroundings."

His voice was grim and somber on that last point. Awo'san had been hunting for long enough he had seen many accidents, and most of them could be put down to not paying enough attention to surroundings, to not respecting the might of Nature.

"You understand?"

"Yes Papa."

"Good, then let us go and bring something back for dinner."

With a decisive nod, he strode off into the Makubwa Lori, moving with grace that belied his larger frame. Tose followed, sometimes literally in his footsteps as she strove to imitate the easy sureness with which he made his way through the forest.
