Part 1
Zi'da 2, Arc 719
“They were out of horses and donkeys”, Talieson explained as he noticed Devin staring at the goat incredulously and shrugged his shoulders. The goat stared back at the Mortalborn before it started to munch on the partially trampled grass in front of the cart.
“The man that sold her to me assured me that a goat is perfectly capable of pulling a small cart”, he continued. “I figured that a goat is better than nothing. Or do you want to pull the cart yourself?” he asked in a somewhat challenging tone of voice.
Devin made a face as he heard the bard’s question and shuddered slightly. Being a follower of Delroth who was the Immortal of Vanity, among other things, he avoided work that was demeaning and that made him look bad or stupid. He looked at Talieson, at his other companions that seemed just as surprised as he was and then back at the goat.
It was a rather ugly animal. It was white with black spots, and it had horns and some sort of ridiculous little beard. It didn’t look particularly intelligent either. While he couldn’t do anything to improve its mental faculties though, there was something he could do about the rest, he realized.
He briefly put his backpack down, rummaged through it and produced a bright red ribbon that he had originally planned on using to tie his hair back if the need arose (it was a bit messy and tended to get in his face sometimes). Having done that, he approached the goat somewhat warily, wondering if it would try to bite him and quickly tied the ribbon around its neck before he moved back.
The goat didn’t even raise its head.
It was slightly less ugly in Devin’s opinion now though.
“The man said that her name is Heidi”, Talieson explained and proceeded to attach the goat that already had a harness on to the cart. As he did so, Heidi complained loudly before she went back to eating the grass that didn’t look particularly appetizing in Devin’s opinion. “She eats pretty much everything, even leftovers, so we don’t have to get some sort of expensive animal feed for her.”
“A horse would have cost us a fortune!” he claimed which improved Devin’s mood to some extent. How did you get a goat to move though? Did Heidi understand Common? Should he use gestures? Should he use some sort of whip in order to get the point across? He didn’t have a whip!
He looked at his companions, hoping that they would be able to help.
