[OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

Image
Siren's Embrace Write-Up

72nd of Zi’Da 719

Kalortah had landed in Almund in the days between his studies at the Scalvoris University. He had heard of the roughneck town on the western coast of Scalvoris from a pair of locals who were swapping tales of a place called the Siren’s Embrace. When he heard of the title of the place, he didn’t think to inquire further but presumed it to be a theatre of some kind.

This was a good chance to spread his reputation across Scalvoris.

So days later, he arrived in the western town, and swiftly found the well appointed establishment. There at the door he was met by Madam Yuloen, who he presumed to be a stage manager of sorts. And an avriel to boot! Kalortah could feel his luck shifting already. ”Hello Madam. I have the honor of being Kalortah Satravial, from Athart. I’ve come to ask about performing at your fine place. I’m a master vocalist, with a wide selection of my own songs to sing. If you’ll let me, I’ll give an audition right now…”

”Ah…” She hummed, crossing her chest and looking him up and down. He wore a deep red, fancy velvet suit with matching valance that had black lining. His cosmetics were of good quality, yet haphazardly applied. Still, they were lacking a singer.

”Alright, sire. We’ll give you a chance…” She cheerfully beamed at him, taking him softly by the arm and leading him into the common area, where the workers were entertaining the guests.

She led him over toward a raised section of the floor, that was typically held for burlesque and strip shows by the women and men who worked there. Right now it was unoccupied and ready for him to perform to the patrons.

”So,” She whispered to him, ”Go ahead darling songbird. Give us a song.” So saying, she took some steps back and then turned to give him a listen.

Kalortah nodded in her direction, and cleared his throat in an effort to try and calm his nerves. Within a few moments, he began his song. It was one he’d devised in Egilrun, while sparring with the Naer Navyri. Albeit with a small alteration, based on information from her:

"Through windless fields
and scouring sands
Zma sought the heart of wind."

"Though by his creator spurned,
and His brothers exiled
Zma brought judgement to Him."

"Divine breath upon the grasses
of that distant plain,
Zma bore no ill thoughts
Nor burden of sin."

"When the Calamity saw Zma wingless,
though he came not to offend,
The Unbroken One's fate
Brought shame only to his kin."

He continued for some moments, repeating the ballad at times and chanting between refrains. He gave a good amount of variation to his vocal range, to give Yuloen a sampling of his prowess at singing.

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

72 Zi'Da 719
Balthazar had been spending more trials in The Siren's Embrace this season than he'd ever spent in a brothel in his whole life- and as a private investigator he found himself going to them frequently regardless. Be it coincidence, fate, destiny, or just bad luck, Balthazar's many investigations throughout the season had lead him to The Siren's Embrace where he could always manage to find information at a price. On the seventy second of Zi'Da Balthazar found himself in the Siren's Embrace asking after Isabella of all people. He'd deduced rather swiftly earlier in the season that he'd gain no other leads about the killer of children from the workers here but they had other information to give. He had allowed too many distractions into his life since he arrived in these new lands and consequently he was afraid he'd given her too much time to get further from him. But he also hadn't dared to try and look through her eyes again because he could tell that she'd known the first time.

Balthazar was sitting at a table in the common area with not one, not two, not even three, but four of the less trained workers. There was an avriel female, a lotharro male, and two human females sitting around the table with Balthazar who's mutations would set him slightly apart from the others. His warm skin emit a soft glow that was more noticeable when surrounded by individuals who didn't glow quite as much. Balthazar had his hair pulled up into a bun because he was having a high static day and he wore rather plain clothing. Dark pants and a light top without the layers most would wear during the season.

Balthazar was in the middle of questioning his four paid-friends when he caught a glimpse of Kalortah entering the brothel. The bard didn't draw his attention immediately, Balthazar was far more focused on finding out what his new friends had heard about Isabella. Yet when the singer stepped onto the stage and began to deliver his song, Balthazar couldn't help but lend the artist his attention. Balthazar quietly ushered his paid companions to watch the singers performance and they seemed more than content to have a break from the questioning.

The singer's range was impressive but Balthazar was not the most harsh critic when it came to the arts. He appreciated when something was created with effort and care. When the song came to an end Balthazar would be the first to applaud it and those at his table did so shortly after.

Mutations

  • Once Paradigm Is Removed: He glows faintly, his skin is warm and sometimes hot to the touch, and when he gets angry sparks literally fly off him. He's a the middle of a field of static electricity so every once in a while when you touch him, you get shocked. Fire leans towards Balthazar and droplets of water seem magnetically attracted to him. He has a series of cracks on his right pectoral that glow of soft emerald. His eyes and the cracks reaching down to his cheeks glow a dark blue. The etheric cracks spiderwebbing up his arms glow orange.

Scars

  • Oops, Oops, Ouch: Balthazar Black has twenty scars across his back from a lashing as well as scars on his hands and arms from jagged rocks in Faldrass. There are two scars on the sides of his abdomen from being stabbed and a slash across his back which blends in with the whip scars.

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

Devin was incredibly bored. University bored him. Being at home bored him as well though. His friends were still in Desnind, dealing with the aftermath of their treasure hunt, so his only company were his pet zombie and his parrot familiar, both of whom couldn’t really speak. He could only hold so many masses in his shrine, and he couldn’t con the people of Scalvoris Town as easily anymore due to his increasing fame as a bard and priest. So, he decided to travel to Almund and visit the brothel, among other things, in order to distract himself (the brothels in Scalvoris Town all sucked in his opinion.). He wanted to check if Nalin still worked there. He’d quite enjoyed his services.

The first time he’d been at the Siren’s Embrace he’d been a little insecure, even though he’d tried to hide it, having never visited a brothel or paid for a prostitute before, and he’d lingered in front of the door for a while. This time, he walked straight through it though, with a spring in his step and a happy smile on his face because he was quite looking forward to the things that would happen soon.

That trial, the Mortalborn who had no idea of his divine heritage yet, was dressed in black and royal purple, with a fancy hat with a real Avriel feather on his shiny black hair. His eyes that used to be brown were purple due to an encounter with a magical tree now which some people mistook for an actual magic mutation, there were feather-like markings on the back of his arms, and a lute was strapped across his back (he never travelled without it).

Smiling from ear to ear, he let his gaze drift over the room. When he couldn’t see Nalin, his smile faded for a moment – until he spotted Yuloen. His smile instantly brightened again, and he was about to approach her and ask her if she’d go upstairs with him because he was quite fond of her as well when he noticed the man that was standing near her - the Avriel man. Was he a client? A stripper? He watched him closely. As he stepped onto the stage where men and women usually took their clothes off and started to … sing? … he furrowed his brow in confusion before he sat down at a nearby table in order to listen to him, frowning as he did so.

The man was good! Was Yuloen smiling at him? Why was she smiling at him? If he didn’t intervene, he realized, she might go upstairs with him. He couldn’t allow that to happen. Once Kalortah had finished his first iteration of the ballad, and everybody had applauded, he abruptly stood, grabbed his lute and jumped onto the stage, bowing to the audience as he did so. When the Aviel repeated the ballad, he joined in. At first, he simply accompanied Kalortah’s song on his lute in order to get a feel for it, and then he began to add all kinds of elaborate notes to his melody, improving on it, trying to surpass the other man, trying to turn his ballad into something truly amazing, going slightly faster modifying the rhythm, and occasionally looking at Yuloen to see how she reacted and smiling flirtatiously at her.

He would impress her so much that she would go upstairs with him!

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

Kalortah was minding his own business, singing his song and tapping his drum on occasion for effect. His heart soared as Yuloen really seemed to enjoy the song so far, and he could see her eyes tracing the vibrations his voice made on the air. There was something special about the relation between avriel and song, and he knew he could win his way into her affections if he only persisted pitching songs to her.

But halfway through his performance, something terrible happened. Something so beyond comprehension that it almost interrupted his performance. A... a human jumped up on stage, and began riffing on his lute. Worse... It appeared he wasn't at all that bad! Had he not kept tune with every change in pitch and tone with Kalortah, it would've been a simple matter to usher a heckler off the stage. But this one knew what he was doing, as if it was planned.

Between refrains, Kalortah's eyes pitched to either direction, looking for any help from the bouncers, but they all bobbed their heads to the human's horribly good twanging. Red rushed to the ivory of Kalortah's cheeks, and he contemplated attacking the human. Yet Yuloen was watching. She was the one with the keys to this job, and if he didn't finish it properly without causing a scene, he might just find himself in trouble.

At first, when he finally finished the last verse, he didn't notice the applause that flooded in from the rest of the rabble. And here at the Siren's Embrace, it truly was a menagerie. Patrons of so many species and races, Ithecal, mer, avriel, as well as the more pedestrian sorts of near humans. There was even an obvious mage sitting at one of the tables, his mutations giving him away immediately. He was among the first to clap, however, so Kalortah felt compelled to bow to him, grudgingly.

He then turned to face the bard that joined him on stage... the fool the... Was that an avriel feather in his cap! in his hair! The gall! The unmitigated nerve of such a creature to wear the down of an avriel as if it were a peice of jewelry. Kalortah decided then, he must make a covenant to reacquire that feather, to repurpose it so that it came back to one of his own kind. And who better a steward for avriel of all kinds than Kalortah himself!

The avriel sharply inhaled through his nose, lidding his eyes for a moment before opening them, and smiling thinly at the man that joined him on stage. "Welcome, you've quite the skill with that lute of yours... Care to make a wager?"

Kalortah smiled smugly at the human, his mouth twisting in consternation with every trill as he attempted to reign in his arrogance for the fortitude to speak to this human, as if he were an equal, on equal terms!

Glory what a thought!

"I'll wager one of my own feathers chosen by you, against the feather in your hair. I'll wager, that you will break tune before my voice cracks! And whoever wins, gets the feather, and gets the loser to pay for this lovely lady to accompany them upstairs!" Kalortah waved a hand at Yuloen, and she seemed to enjoy this idea, which fortified Kalortah's resolve.

At Balthazar's table, the courtesans clug to the mage, all vying for his attention and trying to get him to take one of them upstairs. One of them, the avriel woman, cozied up to him, letting one of her wings graze his shoulder lightly, "Oh, my good sir, did you ever find the people who were harming Nelly's girls? I'm afraid to go home at night, for fear that one of them may come for me... Perhaps later you can take me upstairs, and comfort me?" It was a bit of a weakly delivered ploy, but the patrons of the Siren's Embrace didn't come for a good bit of play acting... usually.

The Lotharro male pounded his chest and laid a hand on Balthazar's shoulder, grinning from ear to ear, "Nah, this one is mine sister, lay off." His hand tightened on the mage's shoulder, though it was not meant to be threatening.

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

72 Zi'Da 719
A contest seemed to brew on the stage and Balthazar grinned with intrigue. The singer alone had been quite something but when the man with the lute arrived their combined melody surpassed expectation- even if it took a few trills to get off the ground. Yet Balthazar would find his attention drawn away from the two musicians by the courtesans he'd paid merely to sit and drink with him. While he understood it was not the typical request he was certain they had been paid for far less entertaining things before. Yet unfortunately for the fine avriel woman, she'd chosen a topic that sat rather uncomfortably in Balthazar's mind. Discovering the truth of those attacks had been a victory for him, but they'd also filled him with the false confidence that lead to a painful failure which he was still recovering from.

"I'm sure the Elements have dealt with it." Balthazar said, distancing himself from the credit he did not feel he deserved... even if he kinda did. Yet it then became more clear to Balthazar that the avriel's question had merely been a ploy to get him in bed when the lotharro staked his own claim. Balthazar gave them both a once over with his eyes and then pointed back towards the two musicians. "I'd be more impressed if either of you managed to get one of them in bed. Though they both seem a little distracted." Balthazar mumbled the last part to himself as he looked around the crowd. He was certain that the two players were looking at some common object of affection which was only confirmed when Kalortah challenged Devin and proclaimed Yuloen the prize of their contest, among with a feather which Balthazar found less entertaining.

Part of him wondered if it would be worthwhile to try and persuade Yuloen away from either of the two men while they performed. Music was beautiful and it was to be admired, but admire it for too long and you might find that others did not listen for as long as you did. "Excuse me, or accompany me- I'm rather enjoying the company." Balthazar said before rising and moving slowly across the room to Yuloen. He didn't say anything to her, he wouldn't dare interrupt her opportunity to watch the two fawn over her affection, but Balthazar was very curious about what he might say if temptation pushed him further... and temptation only cost a few nels a glass in this place.

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

When Kalortah addressed him, Devin turned to face him and looked him over again for a moment. He didn’t find him particularly impressive. Kalortah was short! He was much shorter than he was, and he was also much less muscular – and Devin had never been particular muscular in the first place, a consequence of his growing up in poverty and teetering on the brink of starvation at least some of the time. He did have nice wings though! In fact, they were so nice that the Mortalborn could barely resist touching them. He was incredibly envious of him!

Of course, he would never say so out loud. Devin was not only envious and jealous and such, but also incredibly prideful. He really wished he were able to grow a pair of wings of his own though, preferably purple ones as those would go incredibly well with his eyes. Maybe he’d be able to persuade him to part with his wings somehow? He could be quite persuasive!

“Sure, I’d love to make a wager!” he told Kalortah, smiling brightly and just as smugly, or perhaps even more so as the other man. Unlike Kalortah, he didn’t try very hard to reign in is arrogance though. He was of course superior to the other man. He was taller, more talented, stronger and better looking … apart from those wings, those beautiful, amazing, glorious wings! And he would of course win their little duel. He always won!

“Sounds good!” he decided as Kalortah proposed the prize. “I want your longest feather though!” He wasn’t that attached to the feather on his hat, even though it was a pretty nice one (he could always get a new one). Besides, he wouldn’t lose the duel anyway, and Kalortah’s offer to pay for his amorous tête-à-tête with Yuloen was just too tempting!

“This time, I’ll play something, and you’ll accompany me though! You can sing whatever you like – as long as you can keep up with me!” he told him in no uncertain terms before he bowed to their audience again (interacting with your audience was important if you wanted to become a successful bard). And then he started to play again, without a warning, barely giving Kalortah time to even take a breath.

This time, he made no attempt to go slow. Instead, his fingers nearly flew across the strings of his lute, faster and faster, so fast that he barely seemed to touch the instrument anymore. At first, his song resembled a merry dance song. After a while, he suddenly switched from a major key to a minor key and slowed down considerably though, so that his little dance song became a somber and surprisingly emotional ballad.

It was the kind of ballad that might bring tears to the eyes of more sensitive people.

“How was that?” he asked challengingly and grinned at his rival once he had finished his song – only for that grin to disappear abruptly when he noticed something, something that he hadn’t even considered. “I think that weird white-haired guy is looking at our girl!” he pointed out, his eyes wide with shock, and pointed at Balthazar who seemed to be about to take advantage of their busily trying to outperform each other and approach the beautiful Yuloen.

Kalortah didn't like this mud-walker, not at all.

The way he smiled at him, the way he played his lute and how his words oozed out of his mouth like honey. Then, he had the gall to dictate which of Kalortah's feathers he would put up for wager! What?!

"You DARE!? You mud-walking, petulant, greedy raggamuffin! You would like my finest feather would you!??" Kalortah looked from Yuloen to Devin, and all but ignored Balthazar and the moves he was putting on Yuloen. His interest in the avriel whore was all but forgotten in that moment.

"The LEAST of my feathers is far superior to that, that... chicken ruff you have sticking in your hat!" A furious blush rose to Kalortah's cheeks as he was beginning to blow a gasket at this point, "If only we were in Athart, you wretch, you filth-walker..."

He bit his tongue, however, remembering too well the lesson of Navyri. He wasn't in Athart, and was weak. He couldn't very well make threats that he couldn't back up... yet. Still, he was sorely tempted to throw down his glove and challenge this human to a real duel right here and now!

"Our wager is off. Enjoy all the whores in this place you like. I bid you good night, I said good night!"

Thus saying, Kalortah stormed out of the Siren's Embrace, fluttering his wings to get Devin and the mage out of his way. He hoped he didn't have occasion to meet that other bard in the future. Kalortah wasn't sure if he could keep a lid on his temper should such another meeting happen!

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

72 Zi'Da 719
The drama that unfolded so fully before the mage was perhaps the most entertaining melodrama he'd seen in some time- not that Balthazar frequented many plays. He had nothing against the arts he just found it difficult to sit down for extended periods of time when he didn't stand to gain anything tangible like a clear mind or a deeper connection to the elements. Seeing the Avriel explode upon the other bar elicited a look of surprise first, then a little adjustment of how he was sitting, and then a lean forward from Balthazar. A mud-walking raggamuffin? Balthazar had never heard such insults before but he was sure to catalogue them in his mind for future use.

Balthazar had been drinking rather consistently throughout his visit to the Siren's Embrace, which was admittedly not the usual case, so his judgement wasn't at it's best when Kal stormed out and Balthazar began to clap his hands like an audience member applauding the end of an act in a play. Oddly enough, two others joined in on the applause. Together the three of them seemed to encourage a little applause from another group of more or less sauced patrons in the corner and with the combined might of them, the rest of the venue began to applaud as if they'd just watched two great performers performing a show. Admittedly anyone who worked the establishment knew the truth of what had transpired but there was little doubt they would seek to draw attention to it again. Hopefully the applause would spell the end of the mess and they'd all continue going about their nights.

Balthazar, for his part, ordered and began sipping from another drink. The night was still young for him and he was beyond the pale in drinks now.

Re: [OPEN] [The Siren's Embrace] The Unfeathered Account

Unfortunately, Kalortah’s words didn’t have the intended effect. When the Avriel called him a greedy ragamuffin and a few other things, Devin laughed out loud, grinned all over his face and remarked, “Thanks for the compliments! I know a few more swearwords that you could add to the list, by the way. How about rookid, for example? I’m definitely morally lacking!” he proclaimed, silently wondering if the Avriel had not seen the markings peeking out from under his shirtsleeves. He literally worshipped greed!

When Kalortah proceeded to inform him that their wager was off, Devin grinned even more. “Oh, I’ll definitely have a good night!” he replied. Having said that, he reached for his lute again and played a few more chords on it, lighthearted, incredibly fast chords that sounded as if he were making fun of his colleague. What a fool! Now, he’d be able to enjoy Yuloen’s company without having to worry about Kalortah being in his way!

He didn’t even really mind that he’d have to spend his own money, at least not particularly …

He bowed to the people that applauded, like a good showman should, before he jumped off the stage and marched straight towards Balthazar’s table in order to make sure that the strange white-haired man wouldn’t get the beautiful Avriel prostitute either. He remembered how he had looked at her again. He hadn’t liked the looks that he had given her at all!

So, without further ado, he informed him, “Yuloen’s mine. I pretty much won that duel by default because my opponent left the stage. You can have him if you want!” he generously offered and pointed at the Lotharro that had been interested in Balthazar before and that was looking at the white-haired mage rather suggestively now.

“He’s too hairy for my taste!”

Having said that, he put an arm around Yuloen’s waist.

Overview

A song and music contest about a prostitute in a brothel derais to drama and insults while a cool mage watches the events unfold. The ballad Kalortah sang was indeed very special and so was Devins flamboyant attire. Both of them deserve the label Diva. Don't know why but it felt like "Prince meets Bianca Castafiore in a bard duel". Great fun and it made me laugh. Balthazar's calm observations and his play with the thought of snatching the prostitite Yoluen from them added a lot to the fun. It's a pity that he didn't do it!

(The end felt a little bit abrupt. From a pure story point of view it would have been nice to end it with one more post by Balthazar. )
In total a very fun read! The PCs may not want to meet again but I actually hope they will!
