Desperate Times

19th Vhalar, 719

Tei'serin settled into her seat, and quickly got her journal out so she could take notes. The teacher arrived as she was getting ready for class, and took attendance. Then she addressed her students.

"We're going to be discussing barberries totrial. The herb is a tall shrub that has thorny, grey branches. It has bright yellow flowers that bloom in late Ashan. During mid to late Vhalar, the branches will sag with red berries. In the wild, Barberry shrubs are most often found in sandy soil along the coast lines and swamp land areas. But you can also grow them in a garden. Barberry plants like full sun or partial shade and are very adaptable to a wide range of soil types as long as it drains well. If you are growing them in a garden, it is best to start them in pots then transplant them into the garden once they outgrow the pots. This should be done just after flowering or in late Zi'da. They like temperate climates, and will not do well in tropical areas where there is a lot of humidity."

Tei'serin took notes as quickly as she could. One of the women who was sitting next to her was drawing a picture of the barberry plant based off of the way their teacher described it. Tei'serin wished that she could draw as well as the other woman could, but she quickly dismissed the thought in favor of paying attention to the lecture.

"Barberries are edible, and they can be used in a wide variety of ways. They have a tart, slightly sweet flavor. Barberries can be eaten raw, or used to make jams, jellies, wine, and sauces. They can also be added to salads, or used in rice dishes to provide both color and flavor. They can also be juiced or used to make tea. When using them in cooking, they are usually used when fresh, but the dried berries can be used to make tea. When making jams, jellies and sauces, the best berries to use are the fat ripe ones. But the smaller undeveloped ones are best for salads and rice dishes because they can be used whole instead of having to take the seeds out of them."

The teacher paused to ask if anyone had any questions. No one did, so she went on with the lecture.

"The roots, bark and berries can all be used in making herbal remedies. It is also important to know that this herb has two kinds of bark that are used; the root bark and the tree bark. The root bark should be harvested in Ashan or Vhalar, and the tree bark should be harvested in Vhalar and early Zi'da when the sap is moving. The berries can be harvested at any time. The root bark is collected by carefully shaving it off of the roots. And the tree bark can be harvested by peeling it off of the branches. But it is vital to peel only one side of the tree or branch. Doing this allows the tree to heal and continue to grow. Never peel a ring of bark off of a tree or bush as this will kill it. Once harvested, the bark can be dried by spreading it out in trays and leaving them out in the sun. The berries can be picked individually to decrease the risk of getting stung by the thorns, or by grasping a branch loaded with fruit near the bottom and pulling up toward the tip removing the berries along the way. Since the thorns point forward, you can remove the berries without getting pricked if you are careful."

Tei'serin raised her hand.

"Yes, Tei'serin?" the teacher asked after a few trills.

"Would wearing gloves help to reduce the risk of getting stung by thorns while picking barberries?"

"Unfortunately, no. Using gloves while picking barberries is too awkward. You can reduce the risk of getting stung by thorns by being careful, but there is no way to ensure that you won't get stung at all."

Tei'serin jotted down the answer to her question in her notes while the teacher move on.

"This herb can be used both internally and externally. Barberries can be used to treat digestive problems such as heartburn, stomach cramps, and constipation. They can also increase blood circulation and appetite, and boost a person's ability to fight off illness. The roots, bark, and root bark can be used to reduce fevers, and purify the blood. The root bark can also be used to treat
diarrhea, indigestion, hemorrhoids, gout, jaundice, joint pain, arthritis, and both mid and low back pain. When used externally, this herb can be used to treat sores, burns, ulcers, acne, itches, ringworm, cuts, acne, canker sores, and bruises. It can be used as a compress for inflammatory eye conditions. Finally, when made into a bitter tonic barberry has mild laxative effects. Because of this, barberry has been used by weak or debilitated people to strengthen and cleanse the system."

Tei'serin finished with her notes just as the teacher dismissed the class. Some of the other students left quickly, but Tei'serin lingered for a while so she could organize her notes.

While Tei'serin was organizing her notes, a woman burst into the classroom and told them that the Order outpost had been attacked. Tei'serin didn't recognize the woman, but her blue cloak told her that she was part of the Order just like she was. Some of the other students glanced at each other uneasily as the woman continued speaking, but Tei'serin chose to focus on that the woman was saying.

The woman told them that a large group of people had come into the outpost, claiming that they had sick people among them. But when healers had come to help them, they were attacked. Three people were killed in the resulting fight, and the thieves quickly split up as they invaded the outpost. A lot of supplies had been stolen, and several healers and patients had been injured. Some of them were children and elders.

The classroom erupted into a chaos of sound as all of the students who had lingered after class voiced their opinions of what they should do. The teacher allowed this for a few trills. Then she whistled sharply, drawing everyone's attention to herself.

"Gathering more herbs to replace what has been stolen in important, but there are more crucial things to deal with now." she began, speaking to one of the suggestions that one of the other students had made.

"We need to help the injured first. Then we can take stock of what has been stolen, and what we need more of."

Their teacher took charge quickly, and divided the remaining students into groups. Then she led them out of the classroom and into the main part of the outpost.

It was chaos. People were injured, and healers were racing around, trying to gather the things they needed to treat them. Some of the healers themselves were injured, but they were ignoring their own injuries in favor of trying to help their patients. Tei'serin hesitated, not sure where to even begin. But even as she hesitated, her teacher moved into the center of the room, and took charge. Before anyone knew it, the woman had the patients at one end of the room with two healers assessing their injuries. Once that was done, the patients were moved into treatment rooms depending on the severity and type of injuries they had. The injured healers found themselves assessed just as the patients were. When they tried to object, Tei'serin's teacher told them that they wouldn't be able to give their best efforts to treating the injured if they were injured themselves.

Once the chaos had been sorted into some semblance of order, Tei'serin's teacher assigned her and three other students to work with the patients who had the least severe injuries. She cautioned them to come get her immediately if something went wrong, or if they had any questions. Then she left them to get to work.

Tei'serin glanced at her fellow students, wondering if one of them would take charge. Instead, Ri'ku, Ai'ris, and Kel'ryn simply split up and began helping patients. Tei'serin watched them for a trill, then approached an elderly woman and asked her what was hurting her. Tei'serin wasn't good at diagnosing a patient's injuries and ailments, so she relied heavily on what the woman told her and what she could see herself.

The woman had a nasty gash on her leg that was bleeding sluggishly. The skin around the injury was red and slightly swollen. Tei'serin didn't think that the wound was deep enough to need stitches, and it wasn't bleeding heavily, so she cleaned it out with soap and water. Once she was done with that, she went to see if they had any plantain leaves left. The fresh ones had been stolen, but they did have some dried plantain leaves, so she used a mortar and pestle to grind the dried leaves into a fine powder. Then she added a little water and mixed it until it became a paste. When it was ready, she spread the plantain poultice onto a bandage, and carefully applied it to her patient's wound.

Tei'serin looked around to find another patient, and it wasn't long before she found a young boy who was crying in pain. As Tei'serin began to examine him, she noted that he looked to be no more than seven arcs old. She couldn't find any signs of bleeding, but the young boy had dozens of splinters in his arms and legs. Her mind raced as she tried to decide what the best way to treat his injuries would be. She knew that plantain had drawing qualities that would make it easier for her to remove the splinters, but the boy was terrified, and in pain. It was pretty obvious that she wasn't going to be able to convince him to stay still while she treated him.

"Ri'ku, if you're not busy, I could use some help over here."

Ri'ku hurried over, having finished with her own patient. Tei'serin explained as much as she had been able to determine about the situation, and Ri'ku approached the boy carefully. While Tei'serin prepared the plantain poultice, Ri'ku calmed their patient and asked him questions about what had happened to him. Tei'serin listened as she worked, and learned that the boy had been thrown into some shelves that had broken upon impact with his body. Once the boy whose name was Ju'enji ws calm enough, Tei'serin began applying the plantain poultice to the afflicted areas. Then she carefully removed each of the splinters while Ri'ku talked to the boy and kept him calm.

When they were done, they looked around to see if anyone else needed help. But the other students had already taken care of the other patients so the four of them found their teacher and asked if there was anything else they could help with. Since the other injuries were far more severe than the students could be expected to help with, their teacher told them to write an essay on their experiences and bring it to their next class. Then she dismissed them for the trial before turning back to her own work.

Comments: I quite enjoy threads that involve a bit of teaching.

I liked in how much detail you had the teacher describe the barberries.

I thought that the thread would continue like that, with Tei’serin learning something, so I was rather surprised when a woman burst into the classroom in your second post.

The teacher impressed me with her being level-headed and taking charge.

Tei’serin was quite impressive as well though. She doesn’t think that she is good at diagnosing a patient’s injuries, but in my opinion she did a great job!

Enjoy your rewards!
