Saun 1, Arc 720
On the 1st of Saun, Devin Thorn, thief, conman extraordinaire and not entirely clueless incredibly skilled and experienced Becomer was doing a headstand in his garden while he was reading a book. He was leaning against the thickest tree in his garden for a bit of extra stability so that he would be able to do the headstand longer. He was just trying to turn the page which turned out to be almost impossible in spite of the tree that he was leaning against (he basically had to do the headstand one-handed) when he heard the rather amused voice of Aidan, his roommate who was also his bedmate sometimes.
“Devin, what are you doing this time?” the student wanted to know.
“Reading”, Devin replied in an incredibly dry tone of voice, rolled his eyes and secretly wondered if the slightly older man had a problem with his sight. Couldn’t he see the book that was lying in the grass in front of him?
“Yes, but why are you reading a book while you are doing a headstand?” Aidan wanted to know. “That’s a bit counterproductive in my opinion. Wouldn’t you be able to focus better if you were sitting on the couch or on a chair or something like that?”
“Yeah”, Devin conceded and looked up at the older man (or down at him? He wasn’t sure which way Aidan was since his entire body was more or less upside down at the moment, which was a bit confusing, to be honest). “But the book is so dull that I’d probably just toss it in a corner or burn it if I had to read it the normal way. Trying not to fall over keeps me from thinking about how much I hate it too much!”
“What’s the book about?” Aidan wanted to know, came closer and finally sat down in the grass in front of him, cocking his head a little to the side.
“Graft”, Devin grumbled. “We are finally talking about grafted body parts in class, but this bastard managed to make my favourite topic ever sound completely uninteresting. It reads worse than a math textbook! Aidan, why did he do this to me?” he asked.
“I don’t think that he has anything against you personally”, Aidan replied. He was trying hard not to smirk. “Maybe he’s just a really bad writer? Can I take a look?” he wanted to know and reached for the book, looking at Devin questioningly as he did so.
“Sure”, Devin replied and stopped doing the headstand because his muscles started to hurt, and all the blood rushing to his head didn’t feel particularly good either. A moment later, he sat down next to Aidan, an absolutely frustrated and disgusted look on his face.
“I know what you mean”, Aidan admitted after he had skimmed across a few pages. “It’s very dry and scientific. Maybe it will be more tolerable if we study together though?”
“Why do you have to read that book anyway?” he asked.
“The professor wants us to be prepared, and he told us that he’ll question us about specific chapters in this book. I’m not sure why I have to take part in this. I probably know more about grafted body parts than he does, and if they let me, I could get that diploma right now. I actually have some personal experience when it comes to grafted body parts”, he complained and wiggled his fingers that sported fancy (and sharp!) black nails that had been attached to a Dubaebo once upon a time a little.
A moment later, he moved very closer to Aidan, leaned against him and asked in a somewhat sly tone of voice, “So, how exactly shall we study? I already have a couple of ideas!”
“Put your head right here”, Aidan replied and pointed at his lap. “I’ll read the book to you, and you’ll try to repeat what I said, and then we can criticize that man’s horrible writing style together – and maybe I’ll make dinner for us tonight for a change!”
“I can even do different voices when I read the book to you, like this, for example”, he offered and lowered his voice so that it rumbled deep inside his chest which caused Devin to laugh out loud for a moment before he lay down in the soft grass and rested his head in Aidan’s lap. He had to admit, that was much more enjoyable than doing a headstand!
