Description: Some find Biarne Slatersen a handsome man. He is tall, broad-shouldered and fit. A short brown beard frames his face and he wears a traditional Embla on the left temple. The embla is not painted but made of an intriguing shimmering green metallic material.Biarne prefers Melrathi attire, functional garments of fine wool, with elegant details of leather and fur. He isn’t a poor man and it shows.
As a renowned master alchemist in Melrath, Biarne is respected although not always well-liked. He is born and raised in Melrath (in Vorkund) and has many contacts around the region. He is known to be able to keep secrets. Biarne would never betray Melrath or the wealthy customers he caters to. He has proven himself for many arcs and is known to always keep his word in business. Typical customers are nobles, wealthy merchants and the military. They buy alchemy products of all kinds, custom made on-demand. Biarne’s excellent main laboratory is located in Vorkund but he does business everywhere in Melrath.
Biarne’s political opinions lean toward the traditionalist wing and his religion is Melrathi shamanism. Melrath’s four great induks Myrkvior, Vynmur, Ymir and Svariella are holy to him. He attends at least one ritual sacrifice every arc, which of the major sacrifices he goes to depends on where he is in Cylus. He also shows great respect for the smaller spirits. His attitude to immortal worship is indifferent. He is too intelligent to believe that all worship of all immortals is always evil, but he doesn’t sympathize with it.
Biarne is neither a flat good nor a flat bad person but something in between and thus not predictable. Positive traits (to Melrathi standards) are his ambition and diligence, his loyalty to Melrath and his high intelligence and skill. A very valuable citizen. He can be very pleasant and charming sometimes but mostly he isn’t so agreeable. If people oppose him the less nice side of Biarne tends to shine through. Negative traits are a much higher than average degree of competitiveness, pride and prestige. This can sometimes make him demand to get things his way even when it’s counterproductive to himself. If he finds himself competing with somebody he can get nasty and play foul. Biaren is definitely capable of bad deeds, although he isn’t limited to always being bad.
Being an elitist, he isn’t interested in collaboration with those he sees as lesser alchemists. Collaboration with select alchemists of higher skill can be considered though. But, if he fears that somebody might outshine him he may still be tempted to end the collaboration or even stoop to subtle sabotage of his supposed competitors.
Collaboration with a specialist in medicine and herbs is however a must for Biarne. He takes little interest in knowledge about healing and caretaking but finds them useful complements to his professional profile. His partner Berry Buxwood provides these skills and is also a convenient love partner. Biarne feels that it is a very practical arrangement! This isn’t to say that Biarne lacks feelings for Berry. He is just not one of those “overly romantic fools”. As a love partner, he is inconsiderate, domineering, possessive and jealous. He finds it best to keep Buxwood at short reins.
