18th of Cylus 721

The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for.

Spider Silk and Radiance

18th of Cylus 721, Twilight.

They arrived at an unlabeled pier in Egilrun, one, two, three of them. Gloom assured them that he'd join them shortly after he finished packing lunches. Woe, his adopted son Iago, and the Diri of Sorrow, Breen. Iago looked up at Woe, and asked, Pai, onde foi o Fargis? Vamos mesmo vê-lo aqui?”Father, where did Fargis get to? Are we really going to see him here?” Woe turned to face Iago with a flat expression, yet trying to sound reassuring to calm the boy. There was little else he could do but use his silver tongue, while wearing the steel band of Paradigm, as was his custom when arriving in a new place he wasn’t familiar with. It chaffed his finger terribly, and he wished that Egilrun was welcoming to his kind, so he could reveal himself. Yet he would not be so brazen as to put all of his excessive mutations on full display before the populace.

He patted Iago on the shoulder, and shook his head, Iago, Fargis avançou com botânica, para estabelecer a nossa residência aqui para nós.”Iago, Fargis went ahead with Botany, to establish our residence here for us.”

Iago’s mouth twisted in distaste. He didn’t care much for Fleaface. But then, few really did care for the old Webspinner agent. Woe found his services overweighed his lacking social graces, however, so he was still very employable in his opinion.

Não te preocupes, rapaz. Ele não vai viver connosco. Não me parece.” Don’t worry, boy. He won’t be living with us. I don’t think.” Woe wasn’t entirely certain. Fleaface always did make himself at home, when under contract or mission for Woe. So he couldn’t be certain of his own promise he made to his son.

Nevertheless, they walked into the center of the town from the Pier, which led onto a main central road. There were many barrack-like dwellings, where people seemed to live in apartments and flats of one sort or another. Fargis had told him he’d found a multi-roomed house, that was disconnected from any larger complex, as he preferred.

Even so, he was hard-pressed as he made his way toward the Residential district, to imagine that the densely packed buildings would allow much privacy when it came to any home set in this town.

It was then, he heard some woman nearby, calling to others like him who wandered the streets in this twilight gloom of Cylus. Speaking of Gloom, the strange tunawa appeared next to Woe, surprising him with his light-footed gait as he walked up to him and Iago, wrapped from shoulder to shins in Woe’s cavani cloak to ward off the cold. Breen meanwhile, turned his head, tilting it at the strange black tent that stood underneath a tree.

Woe walked a few paces but stopped when Breen refused to budge from his spot. ”Breen?”

Heedless of Woe’s commands, which was quite an oddity, the dog approached the tent. ”No, Breen! Someone…”

But he slipped inside the opening, and Woe had no choice but to follow to apologize to its occupant. Iago and Gloom followed close behind, shrugging at each other before walking into the tent themselves.

Inside the tent, it was as strange as the outside. A black tent nestled under a tree was not a usual thing, but there it was. As Woe and his companions made their way in, they saw that there was - in the darkness - a woman sitting on silken cloth which lay on the floor. The fabric was shimmering slightly and the woman looked up at him with - apparently - sightless green eyes. As his gaze moved around the tent, Woe would see that there were lots of spiders. Lots of them.

It was odd, because the tent was black, but he could see them even in the shadows cast by the circle of flickering candles. The reason they were visible was because each of the tiny spiders was glowing. Different shades, different intensities, a variety of colours. In front of the woman, laid out on the ground, were a number of things. Cards, mirrors, a bowl of water ~ in a circle around her were candles, but there were others at her side which were unlit. Runes and bones in bags and boxes, there was even a crystal ball.

She lifted her head, although it was turned slightly as though she was listening for him as much as she was seeing him. She seemed to smile, but it was hard to tell because her face was almost entirely covered by cloth - more of the shimmering silk which shifted from black to grey to silver and back again in a slow and random manner, depending on how the candles were flickering.

"Hello," she said. Her voice was soft, gentle and almost amused. "I've been expecting you. My name is Pandora and I am a speaker of fortune, teller of what may be," her hand gestured to the cards and other accessories in front of her.

"Would you like to hear your fortune?" She touched the cards in front of her as she asked. They were turned face down but the back of each one had the image of a spider on it. "If you wish it," she added, "it would be my pleasure."

Woe found the ceiling of the tent fairly cramped, and there were lights, many of them. It took his eyes a moment to adjust, but when they did he saw many of the brethren, spiders glowing and crawling all over the fabric of the tent. This put him at ease, to be under the watchful eyes of his mother. So when bid to enter and hear his fortune, he sat in front of the woman’s fortune-telling tools, or so he took them to be.

Iago went silent, but Gloom spoke up. Breen had disappeared upon entering, perhaps going into the beneath or spooked by something. The dog had always been a little odd when it came to spiders. He rarely enjoyed remaining in their vicinity, which would certainly become a problem as Woe set up a nest and properly dedicated himself to his mother.

”Hello, Pandora. I’m Woe.” He said simply and quirked a brow when she said she’d been expecting him. Was she a webspinner? It would perhaps explain the company she kept.

”How much do you want for my fortune? Golden nels?” Woe felt a lingering pity for the blind seer, wondering if he should open up his pocket to her. He supposed Chamadarst would be pleased that he’d spread the wealth around. Not that his patron was one for charity, but generally it was permitted and even encouraged to exchange services for nels. Every deal came back to Chamadarst in the end.

”What kind of fortune will an Onyx Nel find for me?” He asked, taking it out of his coin purse, and holding it in front of the woman. If she reached out her hand, he’d place it in it. Surely a blind woman would be able to tell that it was the genuine article, given the texture and different signature that onyx had to other types of nels. It would probably be unlike any nels he’d handled in the past.

Iago meanwhile, clung swiftly to Woe’s side, slightly uneasy about the spiders surrounding. Meanwhile, Gloom examined them, closely, very intrigued by the glowing spiders in so many attractive colors.

”Please, tell me my fortune. Continue.” Woe hoped it would be something not too unsettling or setting his son ill at ease. At best it might pass for a good amusement.

Woe looked at the accessories she’d gathered in front of her and watched the mummery of a fortune teller’s trade.

Pandora simply sat there, waiting for Woe to settle and answer her. He spoke of currency. Such things did not interest her, truth be told, but he would know that soon enough. Blessed with Sombran, this one. That was easy to see or feel, as it were. The woman betrayed nothing as Iago settled quietly at his father’s side…for the boy was not the purpose.

Purpose was a funny thing really. One could think they knew their purpose, being so certain of it that they would swear they knew…only for one thing to shift and have the whole idea crumble in their hands. Such a fickle thing, purpose. But did the man with her know that? Hard to say. She felt the shadows surrounding him. Some things were clear – very clear. Some, not as much. Then again, she still did not know what he wanted to know…and that would tell her much.

The spiders frolicked a bit, doing as spiders do. As they moved, glints of iridescent wonder shimmered, although one would be hard-pressed to see where the shifting colors were coming from. A few joined them at the table, crawling up upon Pandora’s hands to visit their mistress.

“I seek not your money, although one would not stop you should you feel so inclined. We shall leave that decision up to you.”

Ever calm, she gathered the curious cards and held the stack out to him. “Touch the top card, please. They need to know you before they can begin to tell me your secrets. I sense you have quite a few, Woe. As well, what answers are you most seeking?” Maybe she would have answers. Maybe not…but much could be understood about someone by knowing what it is they sought.

Grinning a rather unpleasant smirk, seen between folds of shimmering material as she teased the man, waiting for him to either do as she asked or for another situation to present itself. It bothered her not what he chose to do, for she would get what she needed either way.

Re: Spider Silk and Radiance

Normally Woe wasn't one given to such frivolities as fortune-telling and soothsayers. It all seemed a bit of base mummery, but Woe could see Iago's eyes light up in wonder at the spiders surrounding them, and the woman appeared to entertain the boy. So he merely shrugged and picked the top card. He unflipped it on the blanket, and looked at whatever image appeared to him. Regardless of what it was, it wouldn't mean much to him, apart from whatever interpretation the fortune-teller gave.

Woe kept mindful of Iago as he knelt there. Breen, inexplicably, had slipped into the Beneath almost as soon as he entered the tent. The damned dog had its way of leading him into shenanigans, that was certain. Gloom looked suitably flummoxed by the situation. Iago alone seemed intrigued. And given that the boy found so little of interest lately, Woe took to translating the strange woman's words for the boy, to Vahanic. "Não procuro o teu dinheiro, embora não te parasse se te sentisses tão inclinado. Deixaremos essa decisão ao seu critério. Foi o que ela disse."I seek not your money, although one would not stop you should you feel so inclined. We shall leave that decision up to you.”" Woe explained to him.

Then he went on to tell him the next few phrases she uttered, Woe glanced apologetically toward Pandora before he did so however, "Apologies, the boy doesn't speak a lick of common, so I must translate for him."

So saying, he went on to repeat her words to him. "Toque na carta de cima, por favor. Eles precisam de te conhecer antes de começarem a contar-me os teus segredos. Sinto que tens bastantes, Woe. Quais são as respostas que mais procura? Vou dizer-lhe que quero saber como está a minha irmã Labrae.”" “Touch the top card, please. They need to know you before they can begin to tell me your secrets. I sense you have quite a few, Woe. As well, what answers are you most seeking? I'm going to tell her that I wish to know how your Aunt, Labrae fares."

With that said to the boy, Woe looked up at her, wondering if she really had any answers at all. Shrugging to himself, he supposed this was all a bit of mummery for the ignorant's sake, and the boy. Not for heavy questions that weighed upon him. Yet he still wanted to know how the Scarecrow fared, "Do you have any news of the Scarecrow?"

The chittering of the glowing companions, moving across the fabric of the tent intensified, clickering If Jacks says it's a word, it's a word.... as if speaking to each other, or even perhaps to Pandora herself. It was evident to those in the tent but Pandora minded it not, keeping her attention firmly where it was.

As he explained to her about the translation, she nodded her head and spoke gently. "Como quiser. Você quer que eu fale em Vahanic?"* Then, quickly switching back to common, she issued a brief warning. "I am happy to do so but know that some of what is said may not be appropriate for him. It is your choice."

Once that was settled, he did as she asked, touching the top card and flipping it. Pandora didn't even need to look down to see what card he drew. "Ace of Wands...symbolizes a pivotal act or fateful step that will set loose the chain of events leading toward the desired goal. You are entering a time of inspiration and motivation. The trick is figuring out how the card you drew has anything to do with what you stated to seek."

Her gaze, or apparent gaze, remained fixed on him, breathing in...breathing out. Reaching a hand out, she touched the card Woe had drawn, letting her fingers caress the face. "And in this case, they are two separate issues, because, in truth, you are divided. Personal, intimate goals haunt you. Things you've not yet acknowledged...yet this yearning to know of the Scarecrow. Why is it you seek knowledge of Labrae? Ignorance, Hierarchy, Scorpions - and yet, both these parts of you, conflicting. Interesting."

A few more controlled breaths...and more words. "How does hearing about the Scarecrow relate to this other...issue? They are related - of this there is no doubt or else you would not have found that card."

Or maybe she didn't know what she was talking about....

Like many fortune tellers, this one speaked in vagaries and riddles. This didn't surprise Woe, so he was not disappointed. And yet for all that Iago was entertained, and Woe could see that he was enjoying the process. He spoke up in Vahanic, "Woe, can I have my reading told after?"

Woe looked to Iago and shook his head, "You're too young and impressionable for such things. Look to me for direction, at least until you're ready to make your own way."

Iago seemed to chaff at this idea, but settled down and was quiet. Woe suspected that the boy would rather Woe was more theatrical about his lessons to the young teenager. But his mind was still raw and unrefined.

Woe turned to watch as she plied her mummer's craft with the cards. Woe had to admit that she was on point with her reading, some of what she said made a vague kind of sense. But he supposed that was part and parcel of a good fortune teller. They all had that ability to cold read, and be just vague enough to not be incorrect. Woe had to admire the art of deception. He was further intrigued by the idea that she knew of the Scarecrow.

Woe shrugged at her claim of a contradiction. Yet again she showed unnatural knowledge of him, that she shouldn't have. Yet he didn't questio it. Stranger things have come clear from Woe's interactions with such kinds of people. It wasn't out of the realm of possibility that this one was connected to the Webspinners and his mother. "Isn't it the nature of Ignorance to want to be filled in? Even if with the incorrect knowledge? Ignorance is an eager void, a black canvas upon which even the barest glimmer of light can play upon to bring some semblance of enlightenment."

He shrugged, and thought more on her final words. What other issue was she speaking of? "What issue is it you're talking about?"

She listened carefully to what he said, chuckling at his response.

“Child, you may claim Ignorance as a Domain but do not be fooled that you know everything about it. You understand lack of knowledge can lead one down a dangerous path and for now, that is enough.”

Gazing at him as he spoke of the ‘issue’, she reached out her hand to the cards.“Let us see, shall we?” Tapping the top card, she flipped it over. The chatter of the glowing spiders grew louder, prompting her to stop and listen for a moment.“10 of Cups, as I suspected. Relationships.”

Casting her vision to Iago for a moment, she hesitated but continued.“The cards can have various meanings. In this case, I believe they indicate a strong desire for balance and stability. A place to belong that feeds that need. The suit of Cups is associated with water – a gentle element most times. Don’t be fooled. Water can be a gentle, bubbling stream, or a tidal wave.”

Appearing to consider things a bit more, her voice came again. “You are traveling a tightrope. Your past, present, future hanging in the balance. The key is simple – honor all of them. In doing this, you will find what you are searching for. Be true to yourself. Your goals, aspirations, desires, needs. Commit. See them through.”

Rising, she offered him one final thought.“Do not allow Ignorance to control you. Once it does, its hold is infinite and all you've worked for could come tumbling down. Unseen forces will try to accomplish just that. Don't let them.”

The chittering of the spiders intensified yet again, as if to punctuate her words.

Woe

Overview

This thread was about a continuing journey for Woe and I'm so happy I get to be a small part of the story in the capacity of GST. The way you've written Woe on this journey of self-discovery and truth is very touching and genuine. The interactions between Woe and Iago are lovely, and one can tell how much the relationship itself means to both of them, even though Woe's tangle is still broken at this point.

Fantastic job!

Thank you for letting me GST this for you! - Avalon
