The Vorkund Experiments
31 Ashan 721
The letter from Ashling's mother Sol'ange had arrived a bit earlier in Ashan. Ashling had decided to ride to Fensalir and find out what was up but instead she was in Vorkund. Not even in her wildest imagination had she figured that she would end up as a guest in the house of Biarne Slatersen and his assistant Berry Buxwood. A small accident on the road had caused this situation. Ashling's horse Granegal had injured a leg, not by much, but enough to make it best to not ride on her.
Ashling had been leading the mare along the road and looking for a place to make camp for the night when Biarne and "Buxom" had appeared in the company of a group of Ragnari. All of them had been on horseback and headed to Vorkund. The Ragnari had immediately decided that they must save Ashling. No debate. They had a spare horse she could ride on. Granegal could walk beside it without having to carry anything. Even as the soldiers had told her this they had moved Ashling's saddle bags to the spare horse. It would be better to stay in a tavern in Vorkund than under a tree in the forest, wouldn't it? And Granegal would be safer in a stable where no Grendels or other predators could attack the horse.
But, when they had arrived in Vorkund, they had found stables for the horses but the taverns had been full. Hence. Biarne Slatersen had offered to house the Ragnari and Ashling alike. His house was big enough for a few guests. No problems. In lack of other options, Ashling had accepted this and so, moved into a guest room on the upper floor.
