The trial had been set and the place had been planned for and arrangements made. Jasper stood before the shabby mirror in his house looked at the image before him. He had on a white cotton shirt, with black pants. The clothing was comfortable but Jasper still felt a bit odd. It was a new outfit and frankly wasn’t something the young man would wear. The white shirt was could get dirty to easily for his taste and he had spend most of his life wearing either the bright clothing of his home town or the darker colors of the Aesir.
He then looked at his hair which he had carefully combed so it was neatly on one side. Then he checked under his chin for to see if there were any stray hairs left over from when he shaved. No that at least had only taken three times to get them all, and it appeared that at least for now they were staying gone. The man who spend his trials being an Aesir stepped back and with it also left much of what he was trial to trial. On this particular trial he was a young man. He was also a man in love who was going on a special trial with the woman he had discovered himself in love with.
Jasper stepped out of his home and quickly made his way down the streets and towards Astra’s lodgings. He actually had one stop before he came to her lodging. He paused at one of the simple taverns where he regular got meals and picked up a basket for the coming lunch. He liked the place because the cook was originally from the south and so while not true Alivilda cooking it was very close to it. Jasper stood in the common room of the inn feeling himself being fiddling with his sleeve. He took a deep breath then and tried to focus and enter a meditative state to find that calmness. He discovered though that he couldn’t chase out the prevalent thoughts of the days possible events. He felt doubt about what she would say.
Luckily for the none offended sleeve that he didn’t have to wait long before the proprietor and his wife stepped out of the kitchen with the basket. Jasper felt the blood rush to his cheeks at the grin on the woman’s face. “Thank you.” He said with a slight stutter as he took the basket from them.
“Have a good trial.” Said the proprietor as Jasper stepped away. The young man got the funny feeling that the man was laughing at him behind that smile.
Stepping out of the building Jasper hurried down the street unaware that the two who had just given him the lunch had stepped out to watch him trudge down the street. Nor did he notice there broad grins and joking conversation. Jasper was a bit confused why was so skittish about totrials events. He had known Astra since they were children. They had laughed, fought, played, and worked together. As a young boy his parents and hers had made there wishes clear. True Jasper hadn’t let it affect his life, what would happen would happen.
In the midst of these thoughts he was interrupted when the door that he didn’t remember knocking on was thrown open. Like a fish out of water Jasper found himself standing there open mouth gapping as Astra stood there clearly have been waiting for him. The handsome young man looked upon the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Astra stood there in a brilliant green shirt with a rich brown skirt. Her brown hair which was normally in braids or a bun was now cascading around her face in a way that Jasper had never seen her in all there arc’s knowing each other.
Jasper wanted to say something, even just Hi, but he was robbed of the power of speech and just looked at her with wide eyes that spoke of his wonder and amazement. Though he had shut his mouth, and then lessons carefully drilled into his head by a concerned mother kicked in and he offered this young woman his hand. Astra did say anything either but just took his hand and stepped out of the door and next to him on the street. In a dance as old as humanity their hands didn’t let go but instead slipped down to their sides each hand wrapped around the other that formed a tighter bond then chains of iron.
The two didn’t say anything just walked down the streets enjoying each other’s presences. Neither had planned anything more about this trial then that they would spend it together. Yet they both spoke volumes with there silences. Jasper had during his years of training worked with many beings of wonderous ability, but no water spirit was as smooth as skin against his own hand, and not even his companion Eldloga’s warm was as satisfying as the warmth that came from her hand to him.
Astra did pause a moment when she realized that they were at the docks standing by one of the row boats. “Can you hand this down once I am in the boat.” He said. She nodded her head and took the basket. Jasper quickly climbed down into the row boat and then smiling reached up and took the basket from her and secured it in the boat, before offer to help her down. She grinned at him and began to climb down. Jasper felt his breath catch as he saw the flash of exposed legs. He felt he should look away, but he didn’t want to and the brief glimpse was already covered by the skirt. He looked up to those blue eyes and those grinning lips. There was a challenge in that expression and Jasper meet the gaze even as he fought to control his breathing.
Like any good farm girl Astra managed the ladder just fine and was soon positioning herself on the opposite side of the boat. Jasper sat down in his own seat and smiling began to row the boat. There destination was one of the little island around the harbor entrance that were to small to be of use for anything other then events such as this. Jasper maintained is rowing pace so that his efforts moved as much water as possible with as little strokes as possible. It took him a few tries to get the rhythm but once he had it they were well on there way across the harbor.
