Rainbow Glowing Birds!? (Part 2)

Image
Continued from here.

Saun 16, Arc 721

The little brown bird had told Devin that there were a lot of pretty birds around all of a sudden – which he had deduced were probably the multi-colored glowing birds that he was looking for. Since there were a lot of pretty birds around, he decided, he wouldn’t have to ride in a particular direction in order to find them. He’d probably come across one or more of them automatically before long. So, he just continued to ride down the road on his winged goat Keke at a moderate pace for a while before something occurred to him. He abruptly exclaimed “Whoah!”, applying light pressure to the reins at the same time in order to make him go even more slowly.

If he rode too quickly, he realized, he might miss the glowing birds regardless of how many of them there were! He couldn't focus on his mount and pay close attention to the trees and the air at the same time!

Keke bleated loudly and somewhat exasperatedly when he noticed Devin’s signal – he did not appreciate being asked to slow down, especially not when he was so excited to be out and about – but after a few moments, he finally complied and began to move in a very light trot instead only in order to suddenly stop completely when he noticed a bit of especially delicious looking grass at the side of the road. He was a well-trained goat, and quite obedient most of the time, but when there was food to be had, he forgot his training sometimes.

Devin muttered something under his breath, before he decided that he would forgive Keke – there was no rush, besides, his winged goat looked so happy and content now. He simply waited until Keke had finished eating, and then he gave him the signal to move forward and finally left, releasing the pressure slightly on his left leg, because he had just noticed a very interesting shimmer in a tree at the side of the road. Maybe, it was one of those glowing birds!

Except that it wasn’t a glowing bird or even another glowing feather. As he slowed down Keke to a near-halt, with some reluctant and grumpy bleating on Keke’s part, he noticed that someone had tied a variety of silvery metal pots and pans to a branch of the tree with a piece of string. They made a soft sound whenever they moved in the very light breeze, as if they were some sort of makeshift windchime. That was the shimmer that he had noticed!

He wondered why someone had installed a windchime there when there was no house nearby for a few moments before he shrugged his shoulders and simply decided to ride on. Maybe, they had put the windchime there for no reason. He sometimes did things for no reason at all, just because he happened to feel like it, as well, after all. Doing things that didn’t make any sense was fun and made the world a less boring and predictable place!

Re: Rainbow Glowing Birds!? (Part 2)

Eventually, Devin came to a small grove. He could hear the birds sing even from some distance away, and when he rode closer, slowly, so as to not scare them, he saw something amazing, a veritable miracle in fact. There, on one of the higher branches sat not one, but two birds. He didn’t know which kind of birds they were, because he was not a bird expert, at least not yet, but only a bird lover, but they were beautiful and colourful, and they glowed.

That was all that really mattered!

He immediately decided that he would persuade them to accompany him back home, but he also wanted to find out why they had started to glow all of a sudden because he really loved finding things out and solving mysteries. The beer crisis had been the result of worms that had a parasite inside, so, maybe worms were to blame this time as well?

Worms were probably to blame for a lot of stuff!

He was just wondering whether he should go and look for worms and subsequently persuade a scientist to examine them when he suddenly realized something, and he tried very hard not to let out a cry of triumph as a consequence because that would likely have scared the birds away.

A couple of trials earlier, the sky had been covered with rainbow-colored clouds. It had also rained. Maybe, the rain that had come from the rainbow-colored clouds had gotten onto the birds and caused them to slowly change color. Why had the rain not changed any other animals it had touched though?

Come to think of it, why were there no rainbow-colored people? He had heard stories of people that danced on the beach in the rain, so, why were there no reports in that regard?

He thought about that for a few moments before he came to the conclusion that only birds had changed color because birds were much closer to the clouds than any other animals (or people, for that matter).

For that reason, they had probably gotten a lot more of the rainbow-colored stuff on them.

Satisfied with his theory, he turned to the birds in the tree that had stopped singing in order to use his Birdtongue ability before they decided to leave. It was just as he was about to open his mouth that he could hear a most unexpected voice behind him though, and he abruptly turned around and stared at his roommate Aidan who appeared to be out of breath.

“Devin!” the human exclaimed which caused the two birds in the tree to abruptly take flight – apparently, they had not appreciated his loud voice. “I’ve been looking for you! Why did you just ride away when I waved to you?” he wanted to know in a slightly accusing tone of voice before he waved his hand somewhat dismissively and continued, “Something happened at the manor, something really strange! You have to come and take a look! Something’s the matter with Crow! He … he …” he stammered.

“I thought that you were just wishing me a good trip!” Devin explained before he raised a hand. “Stop and start from the beginning, please. What is the matter with Crow? He’s not sick, is he?” he asked, and his eyes widened. Crow was his pet crow, and he loved him.

He didn’t want him to be sick!

“No!” Aidan quickly replied and shook his head, as if he still couldn’t believe what had happened before he abruptly blurted out, “He’s rainbow-colored now, and he glows! Please come home with me and take a look, Devin! I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with him!”

Re: Rainbow Glowing Birds!? (Part 2)

At first, Devin had been quite grumpy because Aidan had scared the birds he’d wanted to talk to away with his loud voice, but his grumpiness and his anger dissipated quickly when he realized that he had a multi-colored glowing bird of his own, a bird that he didn’t have to persuade to move in with him first. He couldn’t wait to take a look at the new Crow!

There was just one thing …

“Did you really just run after me?” he wanted to know and looked at Aidan quite incredulously. He’d been riding for approximately a quarter of a break. Granted, he’d been riding very slowly so as to not accidentally miss something and because it was hot, but still, he was some distance away from the manor now.

“You could have sent a guard or borrowed my Stone Horse. You can always borrow it”, he reminded him before he abruptly dismounted, rooted through his bag and handed a bottle with a drink to the slightly older man. He didn’t understand Aidan, but he was sweating, and he was exhausted, so he should get something to drink in his opinion.

“I wasn’t able to think clearly. I was panicked”, Aidan admitted, blushing slightly before he accepted the bottle, took a few big gulps and finally wiped his mouth with the back of a sleeve. “Anyway, can we go back now, please?” he asked a few moments later and looked at Devin.

When the Mortalborn nodded, they started to walk down the road in the other direction, back to Smooglenuff Manor. Devin did not climb on Keke’s back again. Instead, he led him by the reins because riding when Aidan had to walk would be pretty rude.

Besides, talking was easier when you were walking next to each other!

The two men stopped twice on the way back, to rest and drink some more (Keke got something as well, of course!), and then Smooglenuff Manor with its guardhouse that had been finished just two trials before finally came into view, and Devin’s heart started to beat faster.

It would only take a few moments now!

Re: Rainbow Glowing Birds!? (Part 2)

Even though he had begun to be nearly overwhelmed with curiosity, Devin did not rush through the gate of Smooglenuff Manor and into his private quarters, but led Keke into the stable, fed him and gave him some more to drink. Only when the winged goat had been taken care of, did he enter the manor proper, Aidan who was still talking a whole lot, quite contrary to his usual habit, in tow.

“I’m pretty sure that the thing that made the birds change colour isn’t dangerous”, Devin assured the older man again as they walked up the stairs to the first floor where his room was located, only briefly stopping in order to greet a maid. “It seems to be a common occurrence and is, possibly, related to the rainbow-colored clouds we saw a couple of trials earlier. Look, what I got, by the way”, he said, pulled the two multi-colored glowing feathers he had collected earlier out of his bag and showed it to Aidan.

A moment later, he quickened his pace, opened the door to his room – and stared at the very big and luxurious cage where Crow stayed when he was alone, his eyes so wide that they nearly threatened to drop out of their sockets. Crow looked even more amazing than he had thought.

His feathers that had been black before glowed in a multitude of different colors now!

When Devin opened the cage door in order to give him some food – because such a magnificent creature deserved the best food in the world in his opinion – he let out a loud cry.

Crow’s voice, Devin thought amusedly, as he closed the cage door again and knelt down in front of the cage in order to admire his pet some more had apparently not been affected at all.

“Isn’t he absolutely magnificent?” he asked Aidan who seemed to be marginally calmer now that he had heard Devin’s story in a dreamy tone of voice, his eyes wide with fascination.

“If there are rainbow-colored clouds again, and it rains, we should take a couple of animals that we want to become rainbow-colored onto the roof. It would not only confirm my theory – or not, although I consider the chance of me not being right to be miniscule”, he continued in a very excited and confident tone of voice, still looking at the new and greatly improved Crow. “We could probably also make a whole lot of money with this!” he pointed out and proceeded to smile all over his face.

Aidan didn’t say anything.

He just stared at Devin incredulously and tried very hard not to laugh as he pictured him procuring a rope and trying to haul a pig, a cow, or Immortals forbid, his Scalvwing, onto the roof in order to test his theory.
Notes
From the Scalvoris calendar:

Rainbow Glowing Eggs!?: We've had rainbow eggs, we've had glowing eggs - on the 16th Saun, a tourist asks one of the locals about the multi-coloured glowing chicken they saw. It spreads like wildfire - random chickens (and other birds) have become rainbow-coloured and glowing. They lay rainbow-coloured glowing eggs, they shed rainbow-coloured glowing feathers!

Notes:

I like the way you opened the thread, with a brown bird excitedly chattering at Devin that it'd spotted a lot of attractive birds around. That was a great way to introduce us to the premise of the entire thread.

Keke is such a fine addition to Devin's threads. I like how even though he's a legendary mount, he still has lots of personality and a will of his own, going to munch on grass rather than staying put, and complaining as Devin slowed down. Keke is a free spirit like his master, for sure. Devin is a good master to his animals , it really seems. He's so caring of them, and deferential.

I enjoyed the prospect of Devin going to fetch one of the glowing rainbow birds that had been cropping up. Then we get treated to a twist, after Aiden follows Devin all the way from the manor, after Devin had been riding at a moderate speed on his goat, no less! Aiden surely seems dedicated. The enws he had to share about Crow was alarming and exciting all at once. I'm surprised that when Devin arrived at the house, he didn't just let Keke go off and do whatever, but took the time to care for and feed him. Again, he's a very good pet owner.

The astonishment and wonder at seeing Crow so transformed was well described. I thought Devin's theory that the rainbow clouds were somehow responsible was amusing. Even more amusing was his proposal that they bring a bunch of random animals to the roof to get exposed to the rainbow rain.

It was an amusing story, all in all! Well written!
