Ymiden 721 Wealth Thread.

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

Chamomile and Peppermint

Image
Ymiden 5, Arc 721

It had started to rain again. The storms of Ashan had continued into Ymiden, blanketing the entire landscape in moisture. The sound that the raindrops made when they touched the windows, or the roof, reminded Tristan of some sort of drum. Had it been any louder, he might have found it annoying, but as it was, there was something strangely calming about it. Together with the fire that he had started in the kitchen stove and the smell of fresh herbs, the rain created a relaxing atmosphere. He could not help but feel at ease, and comfortable.

In Rynmere, where Tristan had been born and spent approximately the first twenty-four arcs of his life, he had been a noble and lived a life of absolute luxury. Here, in Melrath, his new home where he had moved after the civil war and the plague, he had to work in order to make a living. He did not mind that at all though. On the contrary, he enjoyed earning his own money and taking care of his family and his friends, especially since he could do so with something that he would have done anyway. Alchemy was not only his job; it was also one of his favourite hobbies.

The trial before, he had been contacted by a lady from the Alfar Hold, one Gudrun Ragnarsdotter, a seamstress. She spent all trial at work, mending clothes, she had told him. It was already quite warm in her shop as it normally was, so she was worried about about what the new cycle would bring. She’d heard about his anti-winter potion, she’d told him. Could he please try to make an anti-summer potion for her, something that would make the Hot Cycle heat more bearable so that she wouldn’t sweat halfway to death?

She’d come and pick the potion up the following afternoon.

Mrs. Ragnarsdotter’s request was the reason why Tristan was eying the flowerpots with various herbs that stood on the windowsill of the window that was in front of the kitchen counter now – parsley, rosemary, thyme, basil and peppermint, among other things – and stroking his chin as he thought about which combination would work best.

Finally, he took the flowerpot with peppermint and carried it over to the kitchen table in order to carefully pluck a few leaves, just enough for a few doses worth of potion. He knew that peppermint was a refrigerant and lowered the body’s temperature, so it would be a good first herb for the potion. With that thought in mind, he put the peppermint away again – if he kept all the herbs here, his table would be filled with utter chaos before long.

He did not return the peppermint plant to its previous place though, but set it down on a different windowsill where it would hopefully get more light instead. Peppermint needed approximately half a dozen breaks of direct sunlight per trial which was a challenge at times like these when it was raining. He also turned the pot slightly so that a different side of the plant would be facing the window as it had already started leaning to the side.

Every part of it should get an equal amount of light!

Following that, he filled a pot with water and put it on the stove in order to boil it and removed a jar with dried chamomile blossoms from a kitchen cupboard. Chamomile had similar cooling properties as peppermint, so, chamomile tea would be an excellent base for his potion.

Besides, the taste of chamomile and the taste of peppermint would hopefully complement each other well.

He didn’t only want to give Mrs. Ragnarsdotter a potion that worked; he also wanted it to taste good!

While the water was getting hotter and hotter, Tristan placed a carefully measured amount chamomile blossoms into a teapot before he retrieved yet another jar from his cupboard, this time one that was filled with fennel seeds. Fennel seeds had a cooling effect on the body as well; and on top of it, they reduced inflammation and promoted proper digestion. Mrs. Ragnarsdotter hadn’t said anything about digestion problems, but three herbs were better than one; and besides, fennel seeds tasted very nice in his opinion!

He decided to crush the seeds into a fine powder with a mortar and pestle first of all, and then he set them aside and retrieved the next reagent that he needed. Certain reagents negated each other without the use of a substance that was known as a binder. He had never seen that happen when it came to herbs, but he decided to use a binder regardless, just in case. Besides, the binder that he had in mind would make the potion taste sweeter!

Just as Tristan was about to mix the crushed fennel seeds with a generous amount of honey – one his favourite binders, apart from snail slime which probably wasn’t safe for consumption – the door that had been slightly ajar was being pushed open though, and a being that was as black as the night itself walked into the kitchen.

Mistral, his cat was getting bored and had decided to see what he was doing and provide him with a bit of company. In Mistral’s case, providing him with a bit of company consisted of jumping onto the kitchen counter, making himself really tall and looking into the cupboard where the herbs were.

Tristan set the bowl he had been mixing his reagents in down for a moment and watched the cat that was really a resident of the Misty Miasma that had gotten lost in Idalos, from what he knew, for a moment with an amused expression on his face.

When Mistral raised a paw in order to reach for the herbs, he quickly stood up from the chair he had been sitting on though and walked over to him in order to gently grab him and set him down on the floor again.

Mistral complained loudly.

Tristan looked at him, looked at the herbs, looked back at him, shrugged his shoulders and finally set a box that was filled with dried valerian down next to Mistral that the cat immediately started to knead, his yellow eyes wide. Tristan knew that he was spoiling his feline companion a bit, but he didn’t care. Mistral had been separated from the rest of his people, possibly forever, so the least he could do was to give him a good life here and give him things that he liked!

Once Mistral was happy and content again, and playing with the box of valerian, Tristan continued to work on his potion. He filled the water that was sufficiently hot now into the teapot and waited … and waited … and waited a whole lot more …

Waiting was his least favourite part of making a potion, and he decided to make that time more bearable by watching Mistral who was still kneading the box of valerian and looking even happier than before.

Once ten bits had passed, Tristan strained the tea, put it back into the teapot and added the peppermint leaves and the mixture of crushed fennel seeds and honey to it. Last came a very small amount of black pepper which would hopefully speed up the reaction as well as strengthen it.

Once all the reagents were in the teapot, he started to stir them vigorously so that they would mix well, and the honey would dissolve, and then he waited again, and strained the tea again, wondering if maybe he should have dumped everything into the teapot at once.

When it came to alchemy that involved reagents other than herbs, doing things in a certain order, and taking care of the base first, made sense, but what was the worst that could happen when it came to some sort of herbal remedy with a small amount of actual alchemy on top?

He decided to give it a try – another trial. For now, he let the potion cool down before he carefully filled it into a number of vials, trying not to spill any of it. Once he had stoppered the vials, he tied a pretty blue bow around each of them, because he didn’t only want his potions to be useful and taste good, he also wanted them to look really nice!

As he carefully placed the vials into a little wooden box, his gaze fell on Mistral again. The black cat had stopped kneading his box and was simply staring at it now, his eyes even wider than before as if he were quite high. Deciding that his cat had had enough, Tristan quickly grabbed the valerian and put it away which was met with a complaint on Mistral’s part.

Since Tristan didn’t want an unhappy cat, he decided to give him a bit of yarn to play with instead.

Re: Chamomile and Peppermint

Tristan had just finished cleaning his various utensils when he heard a knock on the front door. When he rushed into the hallway and opened it, he stood face to face with a Melrathi woman that was approximately middle-aged. Mrs. Ragnarsdotter had a thick blonde braid, stern steel grey eyes, and she was dressed very properly, in a woolen robe with a broad sash. She looked at Tristan whose dark hair was a little messy after all the work he had done in the kitchen, looked at Mistral who had followed him to the door in order to see what was going on and finally asked him,

“Is my cooling potion ready, Mister Venora?”

It was just a break past noon, so it was barely even afternoon, but Tristan did of course not tell her that. He preferred to be nice to his customers so that they would hopefully return. Besides, Mrs. Ragnarsdotter’s being overly punctual was a minor issue everything considered.

“Of course it is”, he told her and gestured for her to follow him into the house and finally the kitchen. “This is Mistral, by the way”, he introduced his cat, because pets shouldn’t be ignored in his opinion. Mistral was an animal, but he was also one of his friends!

To his surprise, the stern looking woman bent down for a moment in order to scratch Mistral between the ears before she turned to look at the box with potions on the kitchen table.

“This should be enough for a seven-trial”, Tristan explained to Mrs. Ragnarsdotter as he handed her the box and accepted the money they had agreed on as payment. “I wouldn’t use the potions much longer than that though. Just like food, potions eventually go bad. I’d be quite happy to make another batch for you though, provided that you are content with this one”, he added and offered her a friendly and gentle smile.

If I’m content, I’ll pay you another visit”, Mrs. Ragnarsdotter replied, having reverted to her normal stern behaviour after the brief interlude with Mistral and carefully put the box with potions into the bag she had brought with her. Having done that, she bid him farewell and left – but not without scratching Mistral between the ears again.

Mistral started to purr very loudly.

“You have the strangest taste in people”, Tristan murmured and proceeded to shake his head – before he scratched Mistral between the ears as well. He loved him even though or because he was a very strange cat!

Notes: I just wanna take the opportunity to say I enjoy the detail you inject even into these slice of life threads. The way you weave a narrative from simple everyday happenings for Tristan is every bit as charming as your more action-oriented and social threads. The gardening portions were fun to see, and it makes sense in overcast conditions to take extra care that every part of the plant gets sunlight!

Mistral is a fun addition to Tristan's interactions with folks, and I haven't read much about him, or seen too many appearances. He's a good cat, and it's a good thing as Tristan took away the Valerian, that he knows it's best to have a happy cat.

It was interesting that Tristan didn't seem to enjoy Mrs. Ragnarsdotter, but MIstral had other ideas. I was amused that Tristan said that Mistral has odd taste in people. Has he ever been mean to someone that Tristan liked? ;)

Great writing, good solo. Enjoy the points and stuff.
