Zi’da 54, Arc 721
On the 54th of Zi‘da, Devin Thorn, High Priest of Delroth, unexpected Baron (He’d just wanted Alyssia to have the job, but Saoire had given him one third of it!) and Scalvoris’ premier cosmetologist, was standing in the kitchen of Smooglenuff Manor again. He was standing in the kitchen a lot these trials, because the date for his party was drawing closer and closer and he wanted to prepare some of the food himself (with a bit of help). This time, he was standing there in a very fancy pure white suit. He also had a headband that was made of white fur on his head, because fur accessories were all the rage that season.
Over the suit was a scarlet apron with frills, because cooking in a pure white outfit was a bad idea due to the possibility of stains. Devin was pretty sure that he’d be able to pass food stains off as the newest fashion trend – he was that skilled a liar – but anyway, it was better that way!
In his hands was a big bowl that was filled to the brim with a mixture of ground almonds and icing sugar, and on the table in front of him was another bowl with a sieve on top. He poured the mixture into the sieve – and then he sifted it again, and again, because he wanted everything to be absolutely pure and perfect. He wanted to have the best party ever. He didn’t only want to feed his guests during the party, but also before it – and make them happy on top of it. For that reason, he had decided to put a small basket with sweet treats into every guest room, and the first treat he’d decided on making were …
… cucumber macarons!
Next to him Mrs. Adams, the head cook was beating a couple of egg whites into a frothy mixture – when she was doing it, it looked nearly effortless, he decided – while one of her helpers was preparing cookie dough. It was flavored with Night Scented Stock rather than vanilla because Devin had told his staff that he wanted to use a few local ingredients, too!
“Now it’s time to add the caster sugar”, Mrs. Adams, a red-haired woman in her forties remarked, and Devin automatically grabbed the bag that contained the sugar in question, measured it and carefully poured it into her bowl while she continued beating the egg mixture because she had spoken in such a friendly tone of voice. A moment later, when he realized what he’d done, he made a face. He was a Baron, and he didn’t obey anybody’s orders, thank you very much!
He was about to grumble slightly before he realized something, something that he had never thought about before, and he subsequently set the bag down again (Mrs. Adams had all the sugar that she needed now!) and turned to look at the head cook, a curious expression on his face.
“Why is it called caster sugar when it’s really just some sort of weirdly fine sugar?” he wanted to know. “Caster is a name for a person. Why does this sugar have such a name, if you don't mind me asking, Mrs. Adams?”
