Rebirth Cycle Event 722: The Magma Beast

The Eternal Empire
The Magma Beast
Date: 120th of Ashan, 722
Location: Imperial Arcane Academy

After the Magma Beast and its smaller kin had emerged and damaged one of the settlements in the Volcanic Mountain Range, the Imperial Army had put out a call for assistance from any who were inclined. This being the empire, it hadn't taken long for adventerous sorts to sign up, nor had it taken long for them to be ferried to the staging area in the Volcanic Mountain Range.

The staging area itself was a platform near the Imperial Arcane Academy, still protected from the heat and ash of the region by the anti-magma shields that protected civilization in the Volcanic Mountain Range. The adventurers weren't the only ones there, as there was an Imperial Batallion that was also going to be aiding in the hunt, should the chase turn violent. This batallion, however, had a much higher than usual population of Mage Corpse members, owing to the regions dangers requiring their assistance.

At the center of the batallion were three crystals, each currently being carried by a member of the infantry, that glowed with a blue light. Near each crystal was a trio of Mage Corps Warrants, whose sole job seemed to be empowering the crystals with ether, though they hadn't begun to do so yet.

Once everyone was in place, a woman in an Mage Corps combat uniform stepped up onto a platform at the front of the Battalion and their accompanying adventurers. "Attention!" she called, her voice a clear command. The soldiers all snapped into place and she nodded. "I am Captain Alicia Streif of the Imperial Mage Corps. I am the commander of this expedition. We have spotted signs of the magma beasts movements and will begin pursuit shortly. Our objective is simple: stop the beast from attacking another settlement. Whether we do that by killing it, capturing it, or deterring it is up to us as the situation unfolds." she said, her tone calm and direct, for all that her voice was pitched to reach the entire Battallion as well as the adventurers.

Then she cleared a hole in the Battalion with a look, exposing the crystal. "For all of you who are new to the region, civilization the Volcanic Mountain Range is only possible thanks to enchantments that keep the air cool and breathable." she said, before pointing the crystals. "We have three of those for this operation. Do not venture too far from them or your chances of survival will plummet. In its normal state, the air in this place can not only burn your lungs, it can burn you. Protection of these crystals is of the utmost importance, as they are vital to our ability to survive away from a fortification or a city in the region." she said, her tone calm.

"Now, are there any questions?" she asked, her tone calm as she waited to see what people would ask for her.

His first major operation! While Lorogh had been involved in a few skirmishes or missions here or there for the Empire, he'd not had to deal with a major crisis, on the scale of a large invasion from the Forest of Corpses or (for example) a large magma beast, as had appeared within the Volcanic Region. He was among the first to sign on to a temporary relocation as the Empire coalesced the loose forces at its disposal. While Cahryst was arguably one of the postings with a larger demand for footsoldiers, given his belonging to the siege sub-division, and capability for engineering and knowing how structures could be either reinforced or broken down, he was given the opportunity by Sergeant for temporary reassignment.

He was very excited, as he was ferried to the staging grounds for the operation. He brought along his domain bag, as well as all of his tools (the ones that could fit it anyway) into that bag. He was equipped with the standard issue black chainmail armor, a round shield, and arming sword of the Imperial Infantry. As well, he'd brought along his crossbow, just in case he needed to take a shot. In his domain bag was also a few journals, for jotting down technical data or various observations that bore further investigation in his workshop.

He was ready for a mission!

Lorogh looked onto the staging area as he arrived with the latest reinforcements from the Imperial Army. There were many soldiers there, and officers. But also a few adventurers. Alec sniffed, and muttered an aside to his fellows, "Adventurers... We don't need their kind. We soldiers are enough!" There were murmurs of agreement within the unit, but Lorogh didn't agree. He spoke up, "I'm sure they come with valuable skills and insights that go beyond military experience. They may well prove crucial!" Lorogh said to Alec in a clear but gentle tone, not to chastise him too harshly. Afterall, they were all here to help make things work!

When at last they were on the staging area, and assembled, the officer in charge of the mage corps explained how they'd be getting around, showing them the doodads that would be crucial to their survival. He wondered what kind of technology they were constructed from, having never heard of arcane contraptions before. But the idea of mixing arcana and engineering was very appealing! When prompted to ask a question, Lorogh was among the first to speak, "I wonder, what kind of arcana or technology are those stones derived from? I've never seen their like before, and it's quite marvelous. Also, how best shall we protect these points of tactical importance, these survival stones? Would it not be prudent to assign some of us toward the defense of these objects? I'm a siege specialist, but I can identify positions that are easily held and fortified if need be, to which we can coalesce and guide the stones."

Lorogh spoke in a humble way, bowing his head before the superior officer, as he made his observations, questions, and suggestions. Then he stood aside for others to do the same, waiting for the next stage in their operation, and the preparation thereof.

Catalina

Newly arrived in the Eternal Empire, Catalina had heard of the situation with a magma beast and she had considered, briefly, whether she should get involved. Then, with a wry smile of self-depreciation, she had finished the rum she was drinking and made her way to where she had to go. Catalina was in a new place, with no ship and no crew of her own. This was a situation which could not maintain, and so she had to make some money. One of the best ways to do that was to take on work like this, she knew. Mercenary work, high danger and high - hopefully - pay. So, she stood and, buttoning up her long coat, she strode off to get started.

They led her to a place - a waiting area, she supposed - in the Volcanic Mountain Range. Not exactly imaginatively named, she considered, but she could appreciate the pragmaticism of it. She did not engage in small talk with any of the people here, there was no need to do so. Instead, she leaned casually and observed, watching what people did, how they moved. Who was the ranking the officer, who held the power in a different way? Those things were important to Catalina and so she adjusted the angle of her hat and observed.

There was a cadouri here, and that was of some interest to her. There had been no such thing as Cadouri when she had disappeared into the Mist which fell on Scalvoris. Now, returned from that, she found the small creatures interesting. They were so much more varied than any other race; the differences in their physical make up was fascinating. Still, she merely swept a laconic gaze around and said nothing.

Quickly enough that she found it mildly impressive, a woman came and spoke of who they were and what they would be doing. Catalina listened and frowned slightly at the thought that there would only be a limited number of these stones. Then, there was a distinct lack of concrete information on them. The cadouri spoke, but asked about how they were made, and Catalina's thoughts were very different.

"Why only three?" She asked, her accent thick. "Why not one each? To rely on only three adds a level of danger which is not necessary, if you have more." She watched the woman's response. How did she react to being challenged? Catalina was challenging her, there was no doubt, but she was doing so relatively politely, even though she thought this "only three" decision was fundamentally stupid if they had more of these. She could have pointed out that what the giving of only three stones meant was that she had to rely on someone else not being stupid in order for her to survive. While she was prepared to work on the assumption that the people here wouldn't be stupid, betting her life on it when there was an option seemed foolish to her.

"If there are not enough for us all, then what is the exact range?" Her eyes shifted from brown to a stark violet. "In order to not 'venture too far' I need to know how far 'too far' is." Such loose terms were not helpful.

So far, she considered, this lot were not exactly impressive. They had no clear objective (kill it, stop it, do something) they had insufficient resources and a distinct lack of clarity. She hoped that things improved. "Also, are there maps of this area for us to see?" If there were, she would study those before hand. Better to know your terrain, after all.

Re: Rebirth Cycle Event 722: The Magma Beast

Image
Over the course of the arcs since he had left his native Lysoria and the safety and comfort of his brother’s fortress in order to travel the world, Victor Amielle had had a fair number of adventures and met a fair number of strange and sometimes dangerous creatures. He had met undead pirates, undead cannibalistic grandmothers and Skinbanes, and even a changeling. In Scalvoris, he had fought a literal Mountain Induk. A Magma Beast was new though. When the Warlock who had come to the Eternal Empire in order to research magic heard of the sighting of strange lava creatures and that an especially large beast had damaged a local town, he thus decided that he would be involved.

The fact that the Imperial Army seemed to be very willing to let random adventures join one of their missions, without assessing their potential beforehand at that, like so many other organizations in the world of Idalos, baffled the Lysorian. When the call for assistance was put out, he immediately signed up nevertheless though. He was, he had to admit, looking forward to being in the field once more, and he did of course come prepared.

He was not sure if conventional weapons or protective gear would help against a Magma Beast, but there were often other foes to deal with. He carried two short swords, one of Adamantite and one of Grave Gold, at his belt, and he wore a set of masterfully made studded leather armor, and his Cavani’s Cloak over it. He doubted that it would prevent all of the negative effects of the Volcanic Mountain Range, but maybe, it would make things a little easier to bear. On one of his fingers was his Ring of Reversal.

He had also brought his domain bag that contained his magical map, writing supplies, his notebook, his pirate coin, three doses of a truth serum, water, emergency rations and a medical kit. He had little skill as a healer himself; he’d decided that it would be a good idea to bring a medical kit nevertheless though, just in case someone got hurt and no medical supplies happened to be nearby, for whatever reason. Chances were that one of the soldiers or adventurers involved in this mission would know how to treat moderate wounds, at the very least.

Victor was not particularly anxious as he was being ferried to the staging area in the Volcanic Mountain Range – he considered such a feeling to be largely counter-productive, especially when it occurred prematurely – but considered what he might be awaiting them all at their destination instead and observed his new surroundings with interest. The fact that that there were not only random adventurers present at the platform, but also a fair number of Mage Corpse members and other soldiers, made him breathe a sigh of relief, he had to admit.

And besides that, he was quite curious about three crystals at the center of the batallion.

When the woman in the Mage Corps combat uniform stepped onto the platform and called for attention, the Lysorian stood straight in order to show his respect, before he listened to her explain their objective and the purpose of those strange crystals and warned them not to stray too far from them. He would of course pay heed to her warning. Recklessness was a kind of behavior that rarely paid off in his opinion. Burning to death sounded like a rather unpleasant way to go to him, no matter if his ring would allow him to come back or not.

Alicia asked them if they had any questions. A Cadouri that looked like he was part of the Imperial Army spoke first. He wanted to know how the stones had been made, and what more, he suggested defending them which was a good idea in Victor’s opinion. A woman dressed in what the Lysorian had decided to dub “pirate chic” raised her voice next, wanting to know why they had only brought three crystals and what their range was.

When she asked about maps, Victor looked at her for a moment before he turned to Alicia. “I have a map that shows the surrounding area, no matter where in the world one is. If there are no maps of the area here, we can use it instead”, he offered, but he would only produce it if Alicia decided that they had need of it. Otherwise, it would stay in the safety of his domain bag.

Having said that, he posed two questions of his own, in a respectful tone of voice, as was appropriate when one was facing a senior officer, “You said that you have spotted signs of the Magma Beast’s movement and will begin pursuit shortly. May I inquire as to what those signs were like?”

“Furthermore, do you have any information on the nature of the Magma Beast? Is anything known about it, apart from the fact that it destroyed several buildings? How big exactly is it, for example?”
he continued. Every little piece of information would help when it came to dealing with the beast and deciding whether it should be captured, killed or driven away in his opinion.

The briefing had been rather brief so far, almost a little too brief, to be honest, which made him wonder. Shouldn’t they at least be told more about the beast that they would be pursuing, and possible strengths and weaknesses?

And besides that, he was still confused as to why the Imperial Army had let a bunch of random adventurers into its midst, and without asking them if they had any useful skills to offer, or any combat experience, at that. Had Alicia considered how the civilians would be used?

He furrowed his brow for a moment as he thought about it before he continued, “I’m a Warlock of the Syns of Melrath. I’m a transmuter and researcher of some experience, in case there is a particular aspect of the mission that you would like to see me involved in”, he added in the same polite and respectful tone of voice as before.

Unlike Catalina, he had decided not to challenge Alicia. He did not tell her that it would be a good idea to get to know the volunteers before they began to pursue the creature. Her answer would hopefully tell him if she had thought about it – and how much planning had gone into the mission.

He also wanted to make it clear to her that he would submit to her authority, despite the fact that he had a relatively high military rank and had been in charge of other people himself once, back in Melrath.

If she wanted him to be in a particular place, that’s where he would be.

Timestamp: 120th of Ashan, Arc 722
Location: Imperial Arcane Academy
Sometimes, Cad had to wonder if he was doing this whole supervillain thing incorrectly.

Villains weren't supposed to take care of problems themselves. They were supposed to send waves after waves of disposable minions at them, or better yet trick the pesky heroes that defied them into doing their dirty work. When news of a great magma beast bringing havoc to the Volcanic Mountain Range had started spreading around the empire, any self-serving villain would have gotten as far away from the danger zone as possible.

Yet by some stretch of foolishness Cad had found himself standing right at its doorstep.

It had seemed like such a good idea yesterday. He was a new face in the empire, without any contacts or allies to call upon to complete his mission, and had seen the notice about the military seeking aid from adventurers as a great debut into imperial society. He could make a few connections with the military, earn a bit of prestige to his name, and perhaps even convince the local government that he was somebody they could trust. All useful tools considering that he was someone they absolutely should not trust in any capacity. He might even score some useful materials from the beast to forge into useful magic items.

What he'd somehow managed to forget right up until the point he'd already arrived was that he was a) weak, b) made mostly of wood, and c) a complete coward. Not the ideal trait one looked for in a gigantic flaming beast hunter. He would have turned back around and left by now, were it not for the fact that he suspected his new patron goddess would be keeping an eye on how this event unfolded. The empire was her old homeland after all, and he didn't want Valtharn to think he was unworthy of her support. It did not take much of a leap of imagination to guess how the goddess of murder would deal with those who fell out of her favour.

At least he'd had the foresight to bring along a weapon. And by weapon, he meant the seven foot golem of pure, bulky stone loosely disguised in a tattered grey cloak and hood behind him. Witcheart Mountain was as tough as a boulder and completely expandable: the perfect walking wall for him to hide behind if things got a little tough. Although the empire seemed to be pretty positive about the use of magic, necromancy had a pretty bad rep in most places, and so Cad had thought it wise to keep the true nature of his golem concealed. As much as one could disguise something with the physique of a troll anyway.

In addition he'd also brought was he considered to be fairly standard adventure gear: chain-mail armour, his bo staff and a set of throwing knives. Wrapped around him and swishing melodramatically in the breeze was his technicolour cloak, ready to keep him pleasantly cool no matter how hot things got, and his magic necklace Ascension's Rise was tucked away out of sight beneath his shirt. Around his shoulder was a small satchel containing his magician's box in case a quick escape was needed, a raw lumite well in case he needed an emergency influx of ether, and his horn Agony's Call just in case he found himself needing to summon every wicked monster for miles around to his position. One never could be too careful with this many heroic adventurers around after all.

When the captain in charge asked if they had any questions, Cad's darted between each of the other adventurers who spoke up in turn. First was a talking otter, who asked about the construction of the cooling stones. A good question, and one Cad would be interested in hearing himself when his life was in a little less imminent peril. Second was a pirate, who asked why there were only three stones available and what their range of effect was. It seemed she was trying to pick a fight with the captain, and Cad mentally sorted her into the "useful rogues" category rather than a typically hero. A potential ally perhaps? Third was the scientist, who asked for more information on the Magma Beast. Perhaps he could convince this man to help him study the Magma Beasts remains should they prove able to slay it? Who knew what potential for evil purpose he might find within the beast's body after all?

When it was his turn to ask a question, Cad raised a hand. "If we capture it, can I keep it as a pet?" He asked, picturing for a moment what mayhem he could unleash with a gigantic lava monster under his command.

Magic/Abilities/Items Used

Witcheart Mountain - Witcheart Mountain is a giant-class golem fashioned primarily from solid stone, albeit with some leather straps in the joints to allow it the flexibility needed to move. It contains no tricks or traps, instead using nothing but its sheer size and weight to clobber enemies. Beneath the large, tattered black cloak it wears it is shaped vaguely like a suit of armour. Although it is a powerhouse of immense durability, Mountain is a very slow golem and is somewhat clumsy with its movements, granting it poor balance.

Re: Rebirth Cycle Event 722: The Magma Beast

When he looked beyond the platform, it seemed like the world was ending.

Surging flows of molten rock cut rivers of fire through the mountainside, and though he could not feel the heat, he could imagine it well enough. The sky was choked with soot black ash as plumes of smoke billowed out from a region that had seen more activity in the span of a trial than it had in a cycle. The enchantments the Mage Corps, the battalion that Russel found himself placed in, kept the black air from reaching his lips. However, those same enchantments could not keep the black mood from infiltrating the Imperials as a swath of adventurers began to file into the staging platform.

Russel stood with the rest of his detachment, and he shared their anxiety about the newcomers. Russel was a part of the Mage Corp, a part of the Imperial Army, and his motivations, along with those that proudly wore the Empress' uniform, were clear. They were here to serve Her will and protect Her citizens. When the order came to his Corp to capture, kill, or debilitate this Magma Beast, Russel and his unit were quick to accept and even quicker to deploy. He, and any other soldier from Cahryst with a writ of approval from their commander, marched together to the Arcane Academy as quick as they could. While his garrison was based in Cahryst, every soldier knew that duty to the Empress knew now borders. What they didn't know, however, was what had brought those adventures to the same staging ground that Russel found himself in.

Clad in his minithelite chain longcoat, colors of that armor shifting slightly as he took position with the rest of his unit, Russel idly thumbed one of the daggers which hung off his belt as he observed the newcomers. He wondered how long of hunt this would be, and how long the Army would trust these adventures to keep rank. It was a risk, Russel figured, to bring in so many unknown variables into the Empire's fold. They weren't military, bound to act independently, chaotically, when the opportunity presented itself.

However, if his training this last season as an Imperial Agent had taught him anything, it was that chaos created as many opportunities as it did risks. More volunteers meant less investment of the Empire's resources. It allowed the military to keep its eyes on the investments they made in the Hotlands, while dealing with a rapidly progressing internal issue. Additionally, adventurers were inherently unknown variables. By providing an opportunity for them to display their mettle, Agents like Russel could catalogue their abilities, their tendencies, and their weaknesses. Useful information should any of the volunteers prove a threat to the Empire's security.

After all, accidents were common in hunting trips like this.

Russel strangled the thought as soon as it arrived. By the Empress, when did he become so cynical? Had his training changed him that much? Or was there more to Ashan's Curse than the blooms which threaded through his skin like ivy on brick?

Thankfully, Captain Alicia Streif's declaration shook him from his musings. He nodded in understanding as she explained the parameters of the enchantments, then smiled as he saw Lorogh launch into a series of well-meaning questions. The Cadouri always had a way of sparking a sense of joy in the dour youth, and he was impressed with the breadth of the engineer's questions. He might have been a small fellow, but it was clear to Russel that Lorogh's mind stretched for leagues beyond his own. The points were well raised, defense of the crystals should be imperative. The loss of even one of those enchantments could spell doom for the entire operation.

Russel furrowed his brow as the swashbuckler spoke next. Her tone was polite, but challenging. Her questions not without merit, it would be important to have as precise a definition on range as possible, but raised in a matter that was clearly more about testing the Captain than about gathering information. The youth nervously began to tap against the chain woven into his longcoat. Social confrontation, even secondhand, sent spikes of anxiety of his spine. He hoped for a speedy resolution, and that there would be less of this type of posturing once they began their pursuit of the beast.

Another civilian added to the list of questions, this one speaking in an academic tone akin to Lorogh's. That was where their similarities ended, however. Where Lorogh's curiosity started and ended with the practicalities of his field, this stranger was keyed into variety of mystery that remained about the beast. And where the swashbuckler had challenged the Captain's strategy, the academic offered to enhance it. Russel made sure note not just his magical and professional experience, but also how his approach differed from the others that spoke. The Kandor was rapidly learning that in intelligence work, no detail was beneath notice.

However, that thought was immediately challenged by the garishly dressed volunteer who had asked to keep the quarry of their hunt. It appeared the adventuring profession took all types.

There was a slight lull after the last volunteer spoke, and Russel, despite his own anxieties, stepped forward. He spoke quickly, hoping to direct the conversation back on course.

"It's m-m-my understanding that the b-b-beast likes to stick to lava flows. Do we have any visibility on w-which ch-channel this one m-might be coming from?" He stammered out, the crowd flaring his nerves. Russel had read the initial reports of the Magma Beast encounter as soon as he arrived at the Academy, but remained curious about how this creature moved through the molten rock. "M-most animals m-move in patterns. Even p-predators. We could w-w-work in r-reverse. M-move from the t-towns the b-beast hit and f-find close lava flows."

Re: Rebirth Cycle Event 722: The Magma Beast

While Balder typically preferred missions he could ride into, it didn't take much to persuade him to help with the strange beast they had been hearing rumors about. Some buildings had been destroyed, which meant this beast had quickly proven to be dangerous to the people of the Eternal Empire. That was enough motivation for Balder to show up today, wearing his scalemail set of armour, his heater shield on one arm and spiked flail held down to his side. Even the armour that he bought for himself was designed with the Imperial Army look in mind, wanting to display his pride as a warrior where possible.

"Think any of these adventurers have swung a sword before?" a Biqaj male called Eer'thor asked, causing a few small laughs from the group of eight Cavalryman that walked alongside Balder. Placing a hand on the mans shoulder, Balder chuckled. "Now now, brothers. Our Empire might be the strongest, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world are children. Besides, last I checked some criminal from Yaralon kicked all our asses to the dirt. An adventurer himself, was he not?" he grinned, making light of the situation now that it was over. Thankfully, nobody had died that day, besides the mercenary who wouldn't go down without a fight. Though many still had a scar to show from that encounter. Most of his comrades nodded in agreement and chuckled alongside him. It was important to remain humble, especially in a public eye such as this.

Stood in a neat formation, Balder and his comrades stood to attention upon the call, a loud resounding echo as every soldier present turned to the way they were supposed to face. All things were explained to those that hadn't already been briefed, Balder letting his glance follow to everyone around he didn't recognize. Truth be told, he spent so much time with the cavalry that it was rare he met other soldiers, let alone some of the strangers here. Many faces that he didn't recognize stood among the crowd, but when the time came to ask questions it was quickly apparent who the people with more character were. A Cadouri, who asked questions and explained his experience with Siege. Another of the Empress's army. When the time came to push a settlement with walls, if he saw great flaming fireballs destroying the walls or breaking through gates, he would be sure to keep eyes peeled for the Otter. An easily recognizable face, after all.

Next was a woman who made her opinions known with little hesitation. From her style of dress, she could have easily been from the same forsaken city as the mercenary he had mentioned earlier, and her confidence spoke the same. If she was even half the fighter he was, she was an asset they may well need, and it was clear that she had the confidence to do what was needed. Following up on her question of a map was a man that went on to explain his profession as a researcher. Certainly a useful trade to have with a creature the Empire knew little about, and his willingness to go where the Captain ordered him to was noted by Balder. It was important in a situation like this to see who would be obedient, who would disrespect orders, who might risk the mission for their own gain, especially if Balder intended on working towards higher ranks now.

The next question caused a few of the men in Balder's battalion to grin, as a man asked if he could keep it as a pet should they capture it. It was hard to tell if Cad was serious or not, though neither made his question any less amusing for some of the squad. Stood behind him was a tall figure in a cloak, though, with a powerful build judging from his size. Certainly two interesting characters, people for Balder to learn more about. Perhaps the man was a Beastmaster of some kind and wished to bring this creature into his collection.

Finally, a voice spoke out with a stammer, another member of the Imperial Army. Another good question that would prove useful should they get an answer, spoken by a brave soldier of the Imperial Army. Thus far, despite a silent air of discomfort from many of the soldiers around, Balder was impressed. Character scared people, bravery and courage made people uncomfortable, meant you could be a wildcard. But Balder knew some of the bravest fighters in Idalos, as far as he was concerned. He'd seen men ride into groups of enemies, leaning off their horse, cleaving through hordes of bandits or mercenaries with ease. He'd seen an Officer ride her horse across terrain most would consider impossible to traverse on horseback, and still maintain the stamina to fight off her enemies after. There was no telling what the Adventurers here could bring to the table, but one thing was for sure.

Balder was excited to see it.

Re: Rebirth Cycle Event 722: The Magma Beast

The Eternal Empire
The Imperial Codex
Alicia listened quietly as the questions came in from two soldiers and the three adventurers. All five of them were people who had been brought in for the assignment from other regions, so she wasn't surprised by some of them, as they were things she hadn't thought to explain, as she had grown up in the region. When the last question was asked, she nodded and looked at the Caduouri who had spoken first. "First, as to how the crystals are made, it's a very long and complicated process that we do not have the time explain here, though the Imperial Arcane Academy can likely indulge your curiosity on the matter afterwards. As to protection, given our limited knowledge on the magma beast, our current plan is to adjust defenses as needed, but with a baseline of five infantry soldiers strictly assigned to their defense. As for siege tactics, if we can take a defensible spot from which to deal with the magma beast, then we'll build up for it, but as we don't know for certain where it lairs, we'll deal with that as it comes."

Next she turned to the young woman in sailor's garb. "There are several issues with bringing more of the crystals. First, each individual crystal has a high ether cost to maintain. Each of the crystals we're bringing with us takes three mages in order to keep it running for the duration of this mission. Second, each crystal weighs about forty pounds, a bit much to carry and fight at the same time. That's why each crystal has a designated carrier. As for their range, they each have a range of 100 feet, and the fields they project will be visible, a transparent blue dome. Don't worry, you won't have any trouble seeing where you're safe. As to maps, those will be handed out shortly." she said. "Oh, as to why only three of them, each of those crystals takes about a cycle to make, and we can't make more than one of them at a time. Plus these portable crystals are a recent invention, less than twenty arcs. We simply haven't made many of them yet and we aren't betting everything on this mission in case it fails." she said, her tone calm.

Then she turned towards the next person to speak, a soldier that had a foreign look to him. "We appreciate the offer to help with navigation. Keep that map handy, in case of emergency." he said, smiling slightly. "As for the signs we saw, it burrows through the magma, causing breaks in the surface. It essentially cracks the surface of the magma when it moves, makes it look there's ridges running through the lava. Of course, this also causes it to spurt out little magma plumes, so they aren't exactly safe. Be careful around the cracks." she said, her tone calm. When he gave his experience, she gave him a considering look, then nodded. "In case something goes wrong, be prepared to help maintain a crystal. Other than, I do not know your training, so I cannot tell you how best to use your abilities." she said, her tone calm.

Next was a man with a prominent moustache and a cloaked golem. She'd wondered at the attempt to disguise the necromancy construct, but she supposed less civilized places still had hang-ups about magic, not to mention that war with Ellasin in Rharne that had happened recently. "If you can tame, you can keep it. I don't advise trying though." she said, her tone calm. Next was another soldier, this one from the mage branch. "We have tracked the beast back from where it hit, it's a sort of plateau formed by several of the lava flows connecting. That's the area we'll be investigating today. " she said, her tone calm.

When all the questions had been answered, she pointed at bridge that connected the platform they were on to the volcanic rock plain they would be traversing. "Crystal teams, form up in front of the bridge, seperated." she said, her tone one of clear command. The crystal carriers, the three mages assigned to each carrier, and the five infantry assigned to protect them all formed into three groups of nine people each. "Local units, on your assigned crystal." she ordered, causing each of the pre-existing groups to form up on their crystals. This led to three groups with an even mix of infantry, archers, and mages. "For those of you who volunteered from other regions for this mission, pick a group. Once everyone's in a group, maps will be handed out and we'll get underway." she said, her tone calm.

Re: Rebirth Cycle Event 722: The Magma Beast

Russel paid acute attention to manner in which Captain Alicia addressed the inquiries. He thought it spoke to her capability as a commander that she regarded each question seriously, and answered without contempt for any perceived insubordination. She was direct, honest, and willing to surrender information if it was relevant to the mission. Any obfuscation appeared unintentional, and quickly rectified in a pragmatic manner. It was no wonder that his Captain, Yssera Kolt, felt comfortable placing him under her command for the extent of the mission.

Once all questions were settled, Captain Alicia had ordered an even unit spread of infantry, mages, and archers. Soldiers of all specialities filed through the space, quickly forming rank and establishing their separations clearly. He thought it a balanced approach to division, ensuring that each crystal team could adapt quickly to the unknowns that they were sure to encounter on the expedition. Russel himself almost moved to join rank out of instinct, but held himself back as he realized it was only local regiment that jumped at the order. Besides, this in itself was a good staging ground to test his burgeoning skills as an Agent. Joining in with rank and file soldiers wouldn't serve to uncover what these adventurers had to offer, or what they had to hide. It would serve him, his assignment, and his Empire best to join with more the unknown variables of this mission.

Eyes drifting over the shifting mass of bodies as volunteers moved to take their place, Russel spotted three pathways he could pursue. Three adventurers that had proven the most vocal out of their lot. The scholar, the swashbuckler, or the stranger.

The scholar seemed helpful and clearly experienced. Experience that could be a boon or a bane depending on how the man wielded it, but the fact that he offered as much as asked spoke to Russel that he was more focused on the mission than any personal gain. A threat to his enemies, he was sure, but Russel didn't think the man considered the Empire his enemy. Not yet at least.

The swashbuckler, a person of both swagger and substance. Willing to challenge, willing to be placed in the forefront, and willing to ask hard, yet necessary questions. Practical, if a bit uncouth. Useful, Russel imagined, if she felt the cause was worthy, but with an independent streak that could prove dangerous if left unchecked. Yssera would like her, which meant that she was bound to be trouble.

The stranger and his enormous friend. At least he made an attempt to disguise the golem, but that clearly marked him as a mage. Mages, as Russel quickly learned in his new division, had an inherent chaotic element to them. With the manner of the man's dress of his speech, the youth was sure that was only amplified in this individual. Clearly here for selfish reasons, but as far as he could tell, not unhelpful ones.

Three variables that were all worthy of observation, but only one whose motives remained mysterious. Head turned to the swashbuckler, the youth kept his step quiet as he approached.

"Private R-russel Kandor, n-nice tah meet yah," He offered his hand to shake in introduction, a slight stammer infecting his speech. "I ap-p-preciate y-you asking those q-questions, good to know that m-m-most people have their h-head on swivel." He looked towards the first company that had assembled on the far left of the platform, and gestured with his remaining free hand. "I w-w-was planning on j-joining up with First Company, and w-was w-wondering if you'd want tah as w-well? M-met some of that unit b-before, good h-head on their shoulders' too."

Russel would move to the First Company regardless if she accepted or not, not wanting to draw suspicion from her, but he figured if he introduced himself as an ally first she'd be more willing to let her guard down around him later. He smiled slightly, waiting for her reply, and moving towards First Company following it.

Cad wasn't sure if Captain Streif was being serious or not when she agreed to let him keep the beast if he could tame it, but her word had been given regardless. Fate was a funny thing sometimes, and though Cad was pretty sure a city-destroying monster was beyond his ability to tame, you never knew what opportunities might come your way. He remained quiet as the captain answered the rest of the questions, then instructed the assembled soldiers to divide into three groups.

Now which group should he join? Each one seemed like a pretty even balance of soldiers, so there was no way for Cad to tell which was the safest to hide behind at a glance. Logically speaking however the captain would probably issue her commands to each group in numerical order, so there was a good chance the first group would lead the way into the volcano, and the third group would follow on form the back. The second group would be right in the middle, protected on two sides from attacks by whatever lava creatures were running rampant in the wake of this Magma Beast's attack. If that was the case then group two was the place to be.

Cad walked over to group two, Mountain lumbering after him, and gave his cape a flamboyant swish as he came to stand before the assembled soldiers. "Greetings peons." He began, eyes flickering between their faces. "My name is Doctor Cad Revel, and this is my friend Mountain. Should you require healing I am your man. Should anything require punching," He jerked his thumb back to Mountain. "He's your man. Any questions?"
