21st Zi’Da 716
It was hard for an army to move through snow. Even a small army. The cold was relentless and the wind, especially in the air was frozen. Elyna was sure that there were icicles on her eyelashes, the only part of her body not covered in wool. A hat pulled low over her brow and scarf up past her nose. Even with the gloves Faith had given her, her hands were numb beneath the leather and wool. No matter how many layers she’d pulled on beneath her jerkin, it was cold after a long day spent flying over the frigid landscape. The Skyrider’s didn’t have the same problems as the army on foot or horse, lifting over the treeline. Her muscles ached all the same however, just in different places. Elyna knew that the army would be setting up camp in Oakleigh and the thought of a warm fire, was almost enough to send her turning back before sunset, almost.
The skyriders had been making the most of their range however and spreading in circles over the terrain. Flying high was colder, but meant there was less chance of being spotted as they wheeled over the land. It was mostly a dense forest. The trees making it hard to spot movement below. She’d sent the majority of her team back with Emily two breaks before, but remained sky bound with Rafa. She was so cold it was hard to concentrate and hard to stay away. Hunkered down over the back of the Volareon, she knew that if they had to perform any tight turns or sudden manoeuvres, her body would be too slow to relax. Her mind and body craved sleep or the blaze of a warm fire. She glanced across at Rafa, he seemed equally miserable, and yet still excited. It was after all, a beautiful thing to see the world stretching out below and something she’d never grow tired of.
The woman pulled down the scarf that covered her nose and mouth. The blast of icy air was like a slap to the senses and she sat a little straighter. She wondered if Emily and the others had made it back safely and found the camp. She wondered most of all about Malcolm, and if he was safe and if he’d received any further threats from Yoreth.
In a blaze of golden pink, the suns started to set beyond the mountain peaks. Elyna and Rafa sank with the clouds so that they could keep an eye on the tree’s. Beneath the weather the world turned through slow washes of grey. The young woman about to give up their search and return back towards the mainland when she spotted it. Night fell thick and fast and she urged her mount lower, still far above the tree-line but she smelt the fire before she could see it. Damp wood throwing up smoke that lined the back of her throat with the scent of ash. She glanced across at Rafa and signalled the young man to rise. He obeyed without question, his mount climbing fast into the clouds and vanishing above. A lone volareon wasn’t an unusual sight, but two?
Keeping her distance, Elyna turned her mount side on the camp, speeding on a horizontal line to it. As night thickened the glow from beneath the tree’s grey clearer. Rebels? It was hard to be certain, but this was the first sign of life that they’d been able to see all day. The skyrider counted perhaps twenty shapes moving in the shadows. Under cover of darkness the Volareon was a shadow atop the trees. All the birds falling silent as it flew over the canopy. With the best estimation she could make, Elyna nudged the mount to the side and they circled upwards. Ghosting through the clouds she emerged to find Rafa hovering. She waved to the young man before directing him back Oakleigh. It didn’t matter that her whole body and hands and feet were now totally numb. At least there was now a direction for the scouts to travel in.
***
The pair returned long after the dark had fallen and the clouds had moved on. It was a clear and frozen night and her breath turned to mist as it left her lips. The Volareon landed, clumsy in the snow and she pitied the creature. Luckily though the skyriders that had returned earlier had seen to their own mounts and could help her down.
“What did you see?” Emily pushed a steaming mug of tea into her hands.
Even through her gloves the sudden shock of heat was enough to feel like burning and the woman fumbled, passing the mug onto Kit who almost dropped it.
“F-fire,” Elyna hadn’t realised just how cold she’d gotten, the words caught in her throat.
“We’ll take care of Blue,” Emily assured, “make sure he’s warmed up.”
“R-rafa?” Elyna peered around the animal to see Rafa being helped by Rosa, another skyrider tending to the mount.
“We’ve got this Captain,” her friend ushered her towards the fire, “go defrost, before you turn blue.”
“I hear it’s a g-good look,” she returned with a smile, “maybe it can be next seasons f-fashion?”
Defrosting was one word for it. Kit pressed the mug back into her hands, and it no longer burnt to hold. Slowly, the sense of movement returned to her hands. Stood beside the fire, she felt as though the ice was melting from her bones. It was quieter where the skyriders camped, they tended to keep to the outskirts of the main army. Not all horses were tolerant of Volareon, which was understandable given the ability of the flying mounts to kill a horse on the run. The volareon could also be finicky, as a polite explanation and intolerant to large crowds of people.
Most of the ‘Riders themselves took it in turns to visit the main camp for food, taking it in turns to socliase and catch up with the day’s gossip. There was usually a few regular Knights who found themselves drifting over the skyrider encampment, fascinated with the creatures. The fire was quiet though, two riders sat on logs as they warmed themselves legs and feet stretched towards the flame. Tents in a circled and interspaced with volareon perches. “Have you given your report captain?” one of her crew called across the fire.
“Just as soon as I can feel my toes, or at least my legs, I’ll be going,” Elyna agreed. Malcolm would need to hear what she’d discovered. She hated to delay, but feared the journey through the camp would see her falling over if she didn’t warm up first.

Scouting in such a large, unfamiliar area had been a true test of the unit's endurance, and the skyriders had proved themselves to be invaluable. Malcolm had sent men out on horseback to check the flats while the skyriders had covered a larger area along the mountain passes and over the woodlands. The camp had set up late in the afternoon, and with the sun so low in the sky, Malcolm was forced to work by candlelight, updating the maps they had brought along with them. He filled in some of the minor details previous explorers had missed, small lakes, streams, and valleys that would be useful for the Iron Hand’s records in future.
Malcolm took up a ruler and a drawing compass, and added a larger half circle to the map in order to highlight the area Benjamin, Nathan, and Murphy’s teams had covered. He was still waiting to hear back from two others, and was looking forward to seeing Elyna. He hadn't caught up with her in a couple of days, a lot of his orders passed through lower ranking members they sometimes referred to as ‘runners’. Most of the time this job went to squires, but after the trouble with his last one, the warden had little trust for his underlings, and instead would send knights like Atashi to see that the correct messages got to the right people.
It was not the cold that bothered Malcolm so much as the long hours on horseback. His leg muscles were aching, and an old injury in his left shoulder was burning again. He hadn't been able to determine what had set it off this time, but struggled to turn his head to the left without experiencing a jolt of pain to remind him that he was no spring chicken anymore.
Outside he could see a few of the men huddled around the fire, and envied them from where he sat inside the tent, hunched over a desk trying to get the last of his work done. When Elyna entered, Malcolm sat back in his chair, tempted to jump to his feet and greet her more like a lover or husband, but instead remained on his best behaviour.
“Captain Burhan, I hope you have better news than the last three,” he smiled then, and winked, sure no one else was around to witness the subtle exchange. “Can I offer you a glass of wine, or perhaps something warmer?” The tea had inside his mug had long gone cold, and he got up to prepare some more.

When the cold was bearable, Elyna had pulled herself away from the fire. Not without a few longing glances at the flames as she retreated. Woollen hat and gloves she wove her way through the campsite. Sticking to the edges of the better worn path and therefore walked in fresher snow, instead of the brown sludge that everyone else’s boot steps had churned. Mixing mud with the frozen weather. The fresh snow crunched underfoot and she shivered. Malcolm’s tent was near enough at the centre of the encampment. So much for privacy. She’d hoped, secretly that maybe he’d have been able to join her with the skyriders. It could have done him some good to get some fresh air and clear his head.
Instead she pushed aside the canvas door and stepped into his temporary home. A small brazier wasn’t giving out much heat, although a pot of water sat atop it. Her gaze slid over his features and she smiled. Fingers twitching in desire to reach out and touch him. Instead of wrapping her arms around her lover, she bowed her head in a nod of respect, “Sir, we found a campsite towards the Northwest. It’s a good break or two of flight and nearly a half days march to reach it,” she reported before gesturing for him to sit down again, unable to stand still with the feeling returning to her toes “I’ll do this, Ser.”
He looked cold, and tired and the lines of his eyes indicated that perhaps he was in pain as well. Elyna crossed the limited space to bend, stoking the fire into life so that heat quickly filled the space once more. A quick glance at the paper strewn desk was a reminder of just how much work the man had to accomplish. She waited for the water to boil, steam quick to rise from the pot before she collected his mug, emptied it outside the tent and re-filled it with fresh, black tea and returned it to the man. A quick search beside the brazier and she found a second cup and filled it with the same. She preferred her tea with milk, but wasn’t about to start searching for it.
The captain waited for permission to sit before she sank down on a camp chair. Mug cradled between her fingers. She was out of sight from the rest of the camp beyond the tent flap and she smiled at the man before her. Her own shoulders bowed with exhaustion and cold as she warmed her hands.
“I found a fire and at least twenty armed men,” her brows drew together as she concentrated, recalling the details of her flight. “They didn’t spot myself or Sargeant Rafa. They’ve reached the base of the mountain, I can’t confirm that they’re rebels for certain, but I can’t imagine anyone else wandering the wilderness at this time of year, no one else is stupid enough,” the smile creased across her features before she looked down. The rising steam warmed her cheeks. She peeked at the Warden from beneath her fringe, “how are you?” she asked, voice soft.

Malcolm thanked Elyna for the tea with a nod and looked across at her as she sat. He studied the woman, not as a husband or lover, but a man sizing up one of his knights. “You can’t be sure,” he told her, watching her brow for any sign of disagreement, “that you weren't seen.” He set the tea aside to let it cool, though it probably wouldn't take long in this weather, and leaned forward, fingers knitted. “I don't believe we were spotted,” the warden coached.
How was he? The question didn't seem worth answering. Most of it was obvious, he wasn't sleeping, he was sore and frustrated with the campaign, and some of the men, but most of all he was worried, concerned that the worst had happened to Vaughn. Malcolm fell quiet for a time.
“Twenty,” was the first thing he said when he decided to speak up again. The mortalborn rubbed his jaw and added a new circle to the map in the area Elyna had reported on. The men and women of the Iron Hand were probably too tired to move out tonight, and he didn't want to risk sending a small party only to find out there were more than twenty rebels hiding in the woods, if indeed they were even rebels.
“You're cold,” Malcolm said as if he had suddenly snapped out of a dream. He got to his feet and removed his cloak as he rounded the desk to set the thick fur against Elyna’s shoulders. When he returned to his seat, he tucked his arms against his sides and made his body smaller. “What would you advise, captain?”
Malcolm thought it would be best to move out first thing in the morning, send two scouts ahead or perhaps one on a volareon, and attack with full force, but he wanted to hear what she thought. He had brought the skyriders along for a reason, they had different training to the knights, maybe Elyna had a plan.

He corrected her and she couldn’t help but raise her brows in surprise. It was a strange dance, the moment between the deeply personal and the professional. She lifted her cup and took a sip of the hot tea before answering him. The words thought out and considered, “I can’t be sure,” she agreed, “but I believe that with the cloud cover, and the light provided in the changes at dusk, that it was unlikely we were seen. I took all precautions,” she assured him, “to ensure our safety. In experience, when a volareon is spotted, it would be a rare person not to exclaim and shout out and they did not,” her brows drew in a frown, “it would take an army of exacting discipline to prevent it’s troops reacting to a volareon. From all account’s, I don’t think the Qe’Dreki are such an army,” she delivered her final thoughts on the matter with a small nod. Wondering what was happening behind those emerald eyes.

Malcolm was quiet and the silence was strained. She took another sip of the tea, wishing that she could close the distance between them. He moved with a little stiffness and it reminded the skyrider of their first sparring match. He’d told her of an old injury and she couldn’t help but wonder if it was causing him pain. Then there was Vaughn. Her dark gaze dropped to her drink until he remembered her presence and summoned her thoughts with a single word. She watched the precise movement of his hand, studying him in turn as she would a horse or volareon for signs of pain. Not his right arm perhaps, was it the left?

“Twenty that I could reliably count,” she agreed. He was on his feet, the fur laid over her shoulders. The woman knew that she should protest. Was he going to lend his cloak to any other captain? It was unlikely. What if one of them came in? She shot a glance at the tent lacing and cursed the lack of privacy. It couldn’t be helped though. Although Malcolm now looked as though he felt the sting of cold. Frozen to the bone, Elyna held her tongue and buried herself into the warmth. It smelt of Malcolm. That, was the most important thing of all. She turned her face to inhale the scent of fur, eyes closed. Forgetting for a bit that she wasn’t alone, and the man himself was just before her.

What was her advice? “It depends if you want them dead or alive. We scout to confirm their numbers and then we attack. I think there would be a lot of casualties on their side. If you want them alive…” Elyna stood, balancing herself with the drink and crossed to the table. She bent, leaning over the map to examine it more closely. The mug was discarded with care to one side and she drew a fingertip over a line, “they’re pressed back against the mountain, so it stops an easy escape,” she scratched the back of her neck, “a larger party of volareon could split and rest here, and here, either side of them whilst your army advances on foot,” she gestured around where she believed the camp to be, “if we encircle them and close the gap, I’d hope they would surrender with nowhere to run,” her fingers trailed down the bridge of her nose, “it would be dangerous for the riders. There aren’t a lot of us to split into two teams of five, to watch the flanks. It would be for a limited time though, until he army caught us up and it would mean that they couldn’t decide to make a run for either side, not without us knowing.”

Standing close enough to touch, Elyna reached out and touched her palm to his left shoulder. “if I took the pain,” she offered, “it would heal over the next few days and leave you free to move,” she kept her voice quiet. The words and offer sincere. She could offer to massage his shoulder and was tempted to create a compress for it either way. She wondered if her assumption was right.

Finally she straightened, “the man who attacked you. He would like to apologise. I…had to demote him though, he’s no longer a Squire because he took Faith by the shoulders. He frightened her.” Elyna stood up a little straighter, “I’ve taken him on. His actions are now my responsibility,” she admitted to her commander. It was a foolish thing really and maybe she should have just told him to leave. However she forced herself to meet Malcolm’s gaze, “he’s Yulidh.”

“Those are more assumptions, captain,” Malcolm replied. “A lot of those men in Qe’dreki have many arcs of experience with the U’frek Sailors. My son, your brother, their leader. I know you don't underestimate Yoreth, do you think he underestimates his captain's?” In a roundabout way it was a compliment, Malcolm had sought her advice after all, and he was sure Yoreth did the same with his men.
Elyna explained her plan, and Malcolm was appreciative of that, but there was a lot to consider. Twenty men could do a lot of damage, he knew from his past experience, some of which was very recent. If they were any good with their ranged attacks, and or had been expecting Malcolm’s men, there was a possibility the woods were riddled with traps. Malcolm intended to draw them out… but how?
It had come as a surprise when Elyna offered to take his pain, and Malcolm bowed his head. His eyes were already bloodshot from trying to seek out Vaughn, and more use of his powers would only continue to leave him feeling drained. Even if he wanted to pass the pain on, there was a chance it would do more damage than good. “It's just the cold,” he assured the woman, “an old ache reawoken every winter.”
The conversation took another turn as Elyna mentioned the squire who had attacked him a few days ago. It took Malcolm a moment to work out who she was talking about, the outburst long forgotten with everything else that had been going on. As the noble woman explained the man's situation further, Malcolm leaned back in his chair, brow knitted. Sin should have been on the first ship home, there were hundreds of young men and women in Andaris hoping to become squires, why keep one so keen on making trouble? Malcolm tried to understand that, then remembered who he was talking to.
“I'm not sure I have the time,” he said honestly, “tell him he is forgiven,” Malcolm shrugged. “If there is nothing else, captain?”

He corrected her again and Elyna had little choice but to fall silent in the respect of his experience. More than anyone, she knew the wealth of arcs Malcolm carried, and his approval as her Warden to a newly made Captain mattered. The woman wondered if he was right and hoped that he wasn't. Hoped that the core of the rebellion wasn't as fastidious as his belief.

He returned to his thoughts and declined her offer. His eyes were shot with blood and she couldn't help but disapprove of his using his abilities. How could she ask him to stop though? If it were Elsie he was searching for. He would drain all of his strength, why wouldn't he risk his immortality for the sake of his son? Because Elsie was a baby, and Vaughn a full grown man... A sly voice whispered. Jaw held tight she continued to hold her silence. Instead she turned and found a thick cloth. She poured hot water onto the fabric and folded it. Squeezing out the excess the near- boiling water scalded her fingers before settling. Confident she wasn't going to burn Malcolm she places the now heated fabric on the desk "if you put this over your shoulder, it could help," she encouraged.

He was too busy to meet with Sin. Elyna looped her arms behind her back as she stood. She nodded her response, "yes, ser. I'll pass the message on." His dissapointnent in her decision to keep Sinith at camp was clear. She had it from everyone now, her first action had been a mistake. The woman lifted her chin. She would bear out the consequences

Was there anything else? I miss you, I wish we were both at home with Elsie, her lips parted in response but it wasn't fair to lay any further burdens at his boots.

"Join us one evening," she replied, "it's quieter at the Skyrider camp and some fresh air and space could help you think," she lowered her voice, "join me," she murmered. Give me the chance to help you, her eyes were dark with the pain he carried.

At war with himself, the man sat watching Elyna once more. He knew how hard she could be on herself, and what his opinion meant to her. The captain bid him to join her some time on the outskirts of the camp, and while Malcolm was sure he could do with some fresh air and a bit of time to clear his mind, there was just too much to do. It was on missions like this that their relationship was both tested and strained.
“Go and get him,” Malcolm told her. “It's not too late, he's probably still up or about to go for dinner.” The young man had come this far, and if Elyna had seen something in him, then perhaps, Malcolm thought, he would too.

Malcolm held the hot cloth pressed to his left shoulder and found that it provided some instant relief, but then any heat would. The cloth remained pressed to his skin as he made a few notes on his map and started drawing up a plan of attack. Reconsidering his idea to draw the rebels out, the warden thought that perhaps it would be best to corner them in the woods where their arrows were less likely to find their marks. Whatever disadvantage he put them at, he needed to remind himself that his men would share the same, and there was still the possibility of running into traps or an ambush. No, this battle had to be on his terms, the Iron Hand needed to take the higher ground.
As the cloth cooled it was set aside, and Malcolm finished adding the final details to the map. He wrote out an update for his superiors back in Andaris, and passed the notes on to Ronald who had come to hand out the mail and take anything bound for the capital the following morning. Ronald put a small parcel down on the warden’s desk, and Malcolm stared at it. “Another one?”
Ronald nodded. “I'm afraid so.”
Malcolm sighed. “Will you pass it on to Benjamin for me?”
“Of course, ser.”
“Thank you, Ronald.” Malcolm dismissed the man and awaited Elyna’s return.

This is the first Maylna thread I’ve graded where their relationship was in the professional sense and not the emotional and personal sense. It’s interesting to see the way they interact with each other and they try to hold on to professionalism and keep their feelings out of it. These two work so well together. A+!
