Back to work after being exposed

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Ymiden 1, arc 717

Linika stepped into the Veridian Wing from the hall that led to the Infirmary. This was the route she was most familiar with, having originally been employed there. She still had her "private medicine cabinet"; a stock of numerous compounds that she had engineered to be modified with frageon crystals, through one of her best prior deceptions. A doctor and his nurse had been on the spot to save several thousand nels' worth of Frageon, a powerful reagent that allowed literally any reagent to be blended with another.

Linika had manipulated the two, through their own financial desperation, to let her "help" them salvage what she could. It had quickly become obvious that they really only knew how to use it in the various compounds recorded in their books, and possessed no real innate knowledge of the substance's true capability. Being from the southern continent, Linika knew quite a bit more about the stuff, and had them practically doing cartwheels to save the expensive chemical, when it was actually not in danger of being corrupted at all.

Her deception had resulted in their putting what they thought was diluted Frageon through needless processes to extract it from the water. Linika knew that being oil-based, there was no real threat of actual blending and loss of the frageon. The real trick had been to modify it so that it did stay blended with the water, so that it would remain solvent enough, long enough, to blend in with all the medical compounds in an entire cabinet of the Infirmary. She did this on her own time.

So she now had an entire cabinet of drugs, vitamins and medicines that were already prepared to accept any additional reagents, be they medical, toxic, euphoric, hallucinogenic, psychotropic, aphrodisiac, or whatever else served her ends. The real beauty was that the Frageon had no effects of its own, so if someone was to take some of the medicine from this cabinet, there would be no freakish side effects to alert anyone to what she'd done.

Her intent had been to engineer a program of discrediting and scandalizing her superiors through the additions of drugs in their medicines. Mostly they would be behavioral anti-inhibiting compounds that would cause them enough disgrace to be dismissed; which would open up positions for those of her rank to work their way up quicker than usual. She would, of course, try to befriend a few of those that advanced along with her, and set up a reasonably loyal faction that would inadvertently do tasks to advance her agenda without even knowing it.

Then...all had fallen to ruin. She'd been arrested, interrogated, exposed, and worst of all....Blessed with her enemy's mark, Xypha. It was difficult to make a non-naerikk understand what ruin this would bring upon a loyal naer. She was a pariah now. What had been a cover story before was now fact. She was an exile in utter disgrace. Assassins had already been sent from her home in Augiery to execute her as a traitor.

But there were other tactics at work in Yvithia's decision to approach her enemy this way. Linika knew that it was hoped that when she finally gave up on her prayer that this could be undone and she could go home to Augiery again, that she would instead embrace the uniquely ingenious truth that, as a Naer, she could be Viden's greatest spy. It was well known that converts made the most zealous followers. And Linika had no doubt that Yvithia hoped "her naer" would eventually come to embody this level of loyalty.

Naturally, Linika swore to resist this to the last. But every day, her watch for new assassins wore on her resolve. As did the genuine benefits she'd gained from the mark. She tried not to use them, but found herself subconsciously embracing them all too frequently to feel completely successful. Right from the start, she'd suddenly found herself fluent in Grovokian. Part of her preparations for her mission in Viden had been to learn common as a replacement to the Augierian tongue, to make her exile seem more fully encompassing.

But apparently, Yvithia had sensed the slivers of a broken language within her mind, analyzed it and filled all the gaps of fluency. She may have thought it a gift to her recalcitrant spy, but Linika assumed it was just another form of homesick torment the Immortal inflicted upon her. Still, it was another gain she now enjoyed. She found herself fluctuating between appreciating these newfound abilities and hating both herself and Yvithia for their existence.

But now it came to it. She still had this "medicine cabinet"; and either Yvithia did not know about it, or she was intent on allowing Linika the boon of bringing it with her to the Viridian Wing from the Infirmary. Linika had noticed how conveniently matched her recent string of work orders had been for the purpose of replacing those same stocks. She still had to actually make the regular drugs and things for the work orders. But from there, it was very easy to smuggle them back and forth through this connecting hallway; bringing the unmodified stock into the Infirmary and bringing her Frageon-infused stock back to her work station.

Was Yvithia allowing it? She did not know, and hated the fact that she appreciated this ongoing stroke of luck. She did not want to be in debt to her enemy. But then again, it seemed that her mother figure, Audrae, was her enemy now as well. She stopped dead in her tracks at this thought. Looking quickly around, she found eyes only just beginning to note her sudden lack of motion. She faked a sneeze to account for it, and continued on her way, tears of loneliness and abandonment shimmering in her eyes.

It had been proven many times to Linika that when a stranger you were tailing stopped abruptly, the best course of action was to continue on. You do not break pace, you do not hesitate even to walk right by them. Don't go so far as to invite eye contact, but if it should happen, give just a token of a nod. Unless you were in a situation where you were stuck "winging it" alone, you should have a partner in position anyway, to take up where you now had to break off.

There were numerous variations on how one presented the facade of general disinterest in someone you had a great deal of interest in; but it was unanimous that the worst thing you could do was to stop abruptly as well. It was a common enough tactic to use if you thought you were being followed. It was just luck that she'd had no intent of exposing a tail when sh'ed stopped. Nonetheless, the sudden drop in the echoing ambiance of the footsteps behind her showed that she had one.

The problem here was that Linika knew she had stopped for a completely different reason. So the subtle theatrics she would normally employ would now also look clumsy and false. Pretending to have lost track of where she was going should have been included some hand gestures. Feigning a search for a room number is more effective with some slip of paper in your hand. Tripping or slipping had the inherent balance adjustments she'd neglected.

She quickly decided to ignore the possibility that her faked sneeze would be taken as genuine, even though it had not actually been done to throw off an imagined tail. The reading of such subtle insights was what made a superior surveillance operative. But the way her shadow had stopped when she did made her suspect that he - a male, judging by the tone of the heel clicks - was not a particularly skilled agent.

It was now upon her, however, to cover her own gaffe. By the chance of simple poor timing, she figured her tail knew she was onto him. But now the game was afoot! She found herself enticed by the intrigue. Was it the Intelligence Authority, come to pick her up again? She did have just a few vials of her Phrageon-imbued stock with her; she never carried more than that with any run between buildings, if any at all.

There was, of course, the option of dumping the ones she had in the women's privy. But the very fact of the person blatantly following her being so inept at it - even going so far as to inexcusably speed up and slow down to match her pace - gave her good cause to assume it was someone besides those professionals. She'd already had her run-in with the IA and they had taken her completely by surprise; something that still stung her with embarrassment.

So, the thing to do was actually to head right where she had intended to go, but to take a somewhat roundabout way there. Since her tail knew she was onto him, he'd assume she'd gone to some random location, after circling the halls to expose him or throw him off. He'd never guess she'd led him right to where she'd meant to go all along.

Fortunately, another tried-and-true adage of professionalism was in play - the one that said to get an early start in all endeavors. By having left early this morning, she could take this circuitous route and still arrive on time, but by a different door. Her slightly hurried pace would add to the facade that she was just trying to lose him, and there would be no comments, about her being "late", coming from her workmates. Just one such remark could undo her effort. Also, coming in by a different door would add just the right amount of surprise to their faces to support the impression that this was not normally where she belonged.

She turned a few corners, not directly back-tracking, but allowing her path to embody the perimeter of one of the smaller wings. At one such corner, a single set of eyes caught her attention for the contact that locked with hers from amid numerous faces. "You're being followed." the words burst upon her thoughts. Had this been the first time Xypha had been employed upon her, she may have stumbled with shock. But without so much as a tic in her pace, she smirked in return, "I know."

The fact of her automatic response came much closer to undoing her discipline than the reception of the other person's incoming warning. She had never done that before. At least, not without much emotional backlash over her use of her enemy's "gift", and her own rationalizing to avoid feeling like a traitor to Audrae. She still didn't like it. But it had felt so natural this time, so easy, so useful...so...superior.

There was a realization of two things in Linika's mind as she entered by the back door. The first was that the trio of gentlemen waiting by the front door had been completely surprised by her appearance behind them. The second was that whoever had sent her the warning, had not also warned her that anyone was waiting for her at her destination. Either they had not known the men were there, had not known what her destination was, or had assumed she would figure upon the welcoming committee already.

None of the three options displayed much professionalism. Nor did the embarrassed look on the tail that now hurried into the room, to meet scowls on every face involved. "She knew I was follow-..." he began by way of explanation, only to be cut off by an impatient gesture.

"So is this where you think she meant to lead you, or do you think she simply ducked in here hoping to elude your surveillance?" One of the other three man asked the youngster, who was now clearly revealed to be a trainee of some sort. "It's important junior. If she meant to lead you here, it may well have been into an ambush, and then we'd have never gained any information."

The dressing down took place while Linika took the opportunity to go through an unnecessary categorization of the vials contained in the rack she'd carried in with her. It lent a routine appearance to her placing of just a few of them in her the cabinet where she kept the Frageon-imbued products. None of the other regular staff took any notice of this, as they were all just glad to be sure that the ones they were supposed to get ended up in the right places.

Mostly though, everyone was paying far more attention to the poor trainee being chewed out, eventually informed that under normal circumstances, he'd either be dead already, or bound and headed for an interrogation at the hands of the enemy. This last comment was played off as if it had only been for shock value, but Linika caught the eye of one of the men covertly gauging her reaction. While she was curious which "enemy" these men were referring to, since she did not figure them to be stupid enough to reveal such a detail for no reason, she also fell into play-acting.

She gave a heavy sigh and turned to scowl at them, muttering the word "enemy" under her breath, as if they had meant her. "I am just here to do my job, I already endured my interrogation by you gentlemen, and you were none too gentle! What chance is there for me to do any subversive actions anyway? When I am followed about the city like this. The fact is, it's these people who could freely poison anyone they wanted, for there is no doubt I would be blamed. Perhaps you should be watching them instead!" her gesture took in the rest of the staff present.

One of the three men began a controlled, but still somewhat heated tirade about the collective racial guilt of Audrae and her naerikk, citing dates, incidents, casualties, testimony and such things. Almost as soon as it started a second voice broke in, directly to her Xypha connection, 'Ignore him. His act is just for show. Not only am I impressed at how you took the three of us by surprise, I could not help but notice the satisfied look you bore as a result. You must make a better effort to control such reactions. It all too clearly shows that you would still like to be in the game.'

She waited for an opportune moment to nod in what appeared to be agreement with the man still ranting aloud. One of the two men behind her smiled briefly, 'Yes, you know very well how to conduct yourself. I can offer you a part in the game, Linika. We used you today, and you were entirely fit for the task. You were never likely to be a successful infiltrator. But even despite our initial suspicions, we never had proof of anything until you blew your own cover on...your Immortal's behalf. We told our inductee to try to tail you unnoticed, and you marked him with ease.'

Linika still glared at the man before her, jabbing his finger along with general accusations against all members of her race. The voice in her head continued, and Linika found herself intrigued. 'We believe there are other infiltrators, and they may try to contact you for support; or at the least assume you are not working for us. I think you already know how well you could do as an asset for our Immortal. Being a naer, none would ever suspect.'

"Yes, yes, I've been told that before. You don't need to repeat yourselves." She said, appearing to respond to the lecturing agent, but giving just a hint of a nod to the Xypha behind him. A thought struck her, and she sent it toward the second man, 'You know, you really ought to be making an effort to react to your actor's tirade as well. Anyone watching might wonder if you're even listening to him. it might cause them to guess what WE are doing.'

Just a flash of surprise crossed his face, 'You're absolutely right. You are a natural, Linika. And we would love to have you. Give it some serious thought, free of political complications and obligations. Then get back to me.' He then plopped his hand on the shoulder of his 'front man', speaking aloud now, "I think we've made our point. Let everyone get on with their work."

He launched a last sneer at her for effect, "We'll be around."

She responded with a sneer of her own, but said nothing. her mind was already working on the fact that she'd been warned by someone of how she was being followed. That was either another test, or a legitimate enemy of Viden. She was not sure yet how she wanted to deal with the second possibility. It had been a male voice, so it was unlikely to be an agent of Augiery.

But then again, if a naer could work for Viden, a male could work for Augiery. She stared at the now empty door through which the three men, and their humiliated trainee, had departed. Time would tell...
