120th of Vhalar, Arc 717
From Victor Amielle’s diary:

Scalvoris is one of the most amazing places that I have ever visited. Never have I seen such an abundance of unusual plants and animals. I have seen flying felines and flying bunnies and seagulls that have the appearance of something long dead, but that still have a beating heart and do all the things that ordinary seagulls do. There are stones that are supposedly able to restore life or drain a person of all emotions. The beaches of Scalvoris are made of sand that shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow or that is cool to the touch even during the worst Saun heat. Its inhabitants are no less unusual – mages that talk about their craft openly, girls that look like they are barely out of school, but that are already professors, veritable prodigies … even the Immortals and their children seem to have taken an interest in the island …

The nearly unbearable heatwave that had troubled Scalvoris during the season of Saun had finally let up and made way to a pleasant warmth. Fluffy white clouds dotted the clear blue sky, and there was occasionally a light breeze, coming from the ocean. The nights had become bearable again as well. No longer did Victor who had taken up a position as a research assistant at the Institute of Metaphysics for the time being feel as if he were sweating to death and as if every breath that he took could be his last one. His energy was slowly coming back – and with it the desire to leave the confines of his office at the university, explore and discover something of note that would ensure him a mention in one of the books in the institute’s library or a certain amount of golden nels.

He had left early when the sun had just appeared at the edge of the horizon and painted the world in a soft red and golden light and was travelling along the coast and already halfway on his way to the Sweetwine Woods when it had reached its highest point. He did not know whether he would travel all the way there – it depended on what he would find that trial – but he had packed some things just in case, a small tent, food and drink, something that would hopefully keep dangerous animals away at night and, of course, a weapon. His clothes were appropriate for a trip into the wilderness, but of fine quality – despite the fact that he was unlikely to encounter a lot of people he could not bring himself to looking like some sort of backwoodsman that barely knew how to converse in Common.

He had just decided to stop at a small meadow to sit down and rest when he heard a rustling in some nearby bushes. He immediately jumped up and reached for his sword just as a four-legged creature with an armoured back that was at least the size of a pony stepped out from behind the bushes. He readied himself for the creature’s attack, but no attack came. It seemed to be more interested in the succulent grass in front of it than the lone human that stared at it with a mixture of trepidation and utter fascination. He had never seen anything like it before. He wondered if it would be possible to capture one of its kind and use it as another person would use a horse as it seemed to be quite docile. It would be a sufficiently impressive birth trial gift for his brother back in Lysoria and something that his subjects would talk about for seasons to come.

For now he turned away from it again though as he did not have the necessary tools with him and made his way closer to the ocean. The sight that greeted him nearly took his breath away. The beach that stretched out before him shone like fire – or perhaps a million rubies that were priceless beyond measure. He came closer and knelt down to touch it and find out if one of the Immortals had turned it to crystal, but it felt like sand, and it slipped through his fingers just like sand. It was a beautiful illusion and nothing more.

"I never said my wishes were supposed to do any good," said the Djinn...
The island was unique, that was for sure. Something had always drawn the courageous and adventurous to the Scalvoran waters, both of the criminal and legitimate variety. Plenty of good and interesting people had taken up on the islands since the disappearance of the Lords, and the immense growth of scholarly, religious and magical pursuits had astounded the rest of the continent. Even in its pursuits, though, Scalvoris had managed to keep the same laid-back, vacation-island kind of feel that many had hoped for when visiting the strange place.

For Victor, though, it was more than that. There was always something fascinating to the Lysorian, whose homeland was nowhere near the cavalcade of strange and mysterious. If it wasn't a strange beast, it was flora, or the emanations of magic that the Transmuter could ever so subtly sense around him. The Etherist part of Victor was something that was coming more to fruition, and he wasn't sure if it was the place or himself, but there was a bit of truth to both of those facets. It was Scalvoris, though, that was affording him the ability to see the world for what it could be. The Transmuter's Palate could find true delicacies here, if one knew where to look.

The grandeur of the crimson sands, though, was only the beginning of the splendor of the beach. Glittering water sparkled in the sunslight, and though the air was beginning to cool, the sands seemed to retain the heat the suns' rays had provided for the length of the trial. There was a natural magic in the world that Victor did not quite understand, though not many in the world did. Hell, most Immortals could not understand the natural magic that the spirits of Idalos brought to the world. Instead, they just inhabited the strange world, much the same as the mortals.

Behind Victor, on the edge of the ruby-sand, sat a man. Dressed in flowing silk pants, a dark gold to compliment his tanned skin, and a bare chest, the man watched Victor with interest. A chain, silver and gold intertwined, hung from his neck, covering a bit of his tanned chest. Pale golden eyes followed the man as he crouched and examined the sand, and when he spoke, it was as if he was right behind Victor.

"Such a disappointment, right? I, too, thought they would be made of precious gems... Though, then again, are they not?" When Victor looked back, a large ruby sat at his feet. Half the size of Victor's fist, it shone in the sunslight, casting a darker red pallor over the crimson sand next to it, refracting the light a bit to cause a visual bend. When Victor's eyes came back to the man, who was still a decent bit away, the man was smiling.

"The magic of this place never ceases to amaze me." The man's voice was sharp, like a knife, and quick. He cocked his head to the side and studied Victor. "Go on, then. Pick it up. A gift, you could suppose." The grin from the man gave Victor the impression he was a mouse and the tanned man was a hawk circling him.

"In fact, I swore they would always do as much harm as possible."

Crimson Sands

In all the time that he had spent travelling the world of Idalos, Victor had never seen something as beautiful as the beach on which he now stood. Even though winter was just around the corner, the sand in his hand was warm to the touch, as if some of the sun’s last rays had been caught inside it, and the ocean that was visible in the distance sparkled like a million of sapphires. The salty smell that was in the air filled him with a sense of longing, to move, to uncover the secrets that the world had to offer, to simply lose himself in the sights and sounds and smells around him for a while and make all the things that he could see his.

It was only after a while that he noticed that he was not alone, a gross oversight on his part, for not everybody that one encountered in the wilds was friendly. Had the man just arrived or had he already been there since Victor had come to the beach, watching him?

He turned around and took in his appearance, cautious – and curious for it was obvious that the stranger was not simply another traveler. He had golden eyes, and he was wearing pants of golden silk and a precious chain, and even though he was still some distance away, Victor could hear his voice as clearly as if he were right next to him.

He reminded him of somebody, somebody that had been in his thoughts quite frequently, but that he had never met in person …

He was just about to open his mouth and say something, but stopped abruptly as he noticed the gigantic ruby on the ground in front of him. His eyes grew wide. He hesitated for a moment for it seemed strange to him that he had overlooked something so precious, and then he took it in his hand and looked at it in wonder. He had never seen anything like it before!

He could not help but think about what he would be able to buy with it – it had to be worth hundreds of nels - but then he decided that it would make more sense to hold onto it. He realized that he would never be able to part with it. There were unlikely to be a lot of stones like it on Scalvoris. “Thank you”, he said to the stranger. He did not question his gift, he did not ask what he had done to deserve it or what he would have to do. He did not care.

It was his, and that was all that mattered.

After a moment he reluctantly pulled his gaze away from the ruby and looked up again. The way that the stranger smiled at him reminded him of a hawk watching its prey before it struck, but then again, he had kept such birds, back when he had been a boy in Lysoria. He knew that he had to be careful, but he could not quite bring himself to being afraid, not until he was given a definite reason to be such, at least.

“I’m disappointed, yes”, he continued. His gaze never left the other man’s face. “Who would not be? But disappointment is usually only momentary, and there might be something worthwhile just around the corner. As for this place … it looks like something out of a fairy tale, doesn’t it?”

“One cannot help but wonder why it is so different from the rest of Idalos.”
He paused, and his fingers closed around the ruby, as if he had to make sure that it was indeed real and would not disappear again the moment he let go of it. “I take it that you have been to Scalvoris before then?” he asked, thinking back on what the stranger had said to him.

There were other questions that he wanted to ask as well – whether the man really was who or what he suspected him to be and what exactly he was doing here, so far from the city proper – but he could not bring himself to blurt them out like a child that did not know anything about good manners and etiquette. He was too proud to act like that.

"I never said my wishes were supposed to do any good," said the Djinn...
"I have been all over Idalos." The response came, dryly. When Victor looked back to the man, he was no longer smiling. Instead, his frown curved downward as he examined Victor. Holding the ruby, the man appeared much grander than he was. The man, whose eyes settled uncomfortably on the red gem, gave Victor the sense that he wanted it back.

Unfortunately, it was Victor's. For now.

The man sauntered closer, crouching to quickly scoop a handful of the blood-red sand, before stopping directly before Victor. Strange eyes examined every detail of Victor's face, grains of red sand falling from his hand to land in a growing pile in front of the two. As each grain fell, a small ruby clicked against the others, the pile of precious gems refracting the light to cast darker red shadows around them. With a vicious grin, the man inhaled sharply, looking down at the pile to lead Victor's eyes to it.

"A gift, you could suppose. Or perhaps a payment. You seem a man who may enjoy wonders, are you not? Would you not consider learning more secrets, and being paid for it?" Delroth's eyebrow perked, but Victor still felt like a field mouse. He could tell he was being measured, and he could only hope that his acceptance would tear away that predatory gaze.

"I have need of a man of your talents. Should you accept, I will reward you handsomely... And you may just learn something in the process." Or die, but Delroth let that hand in the air. Suddenly violent, he stepped towards Victor and clenched his left hand into a talon-like shape, his nails sharp and menacing.

"Or you can turn your back with your gift and learn nothing. Make your choice." It was clear he meant right then.

"In fact, I swore they would always do as much harm as possible."

“So have I“, Victor replied as the stranger informed him that he had been all over Idalos. He had travelled the world extensively before he had decided to settle down on Scalvoris for a while and dedicate his time to the study of magic. He had explored the jungles of Southern Idalos and been as far north as Viden. He had collected unusual things during his expeditions – stones, animal bones or pieces of pottery – and often sent samples of his discoveries to his brother Stefan, the lord of Lysoria in an attempt to impress him, but of course …

“But of course I’m unlikely to be as well-travelled or accomplished as you are”, he conceded, all too aware that the man in front of him was unlikely to be just another stranger who had decided to explore the island for a bit. Victor was not normally a humble man who downplayed his accomplishments, but in the face of a being who seemed to have appeared out of thin air and considering his lack of armor and weapons, apart from an ordinary shortsword, it seemed sensible, even though doing so was somewhat difficult for him.

As the man studied him, Victor did the same – but only for a few moments before he realized that the grains of sands that he had touched had transformed into rubies. It confirmed what he had suspected all along. He moved his hand a fraction, as if to touch the treasure in front of him, but then he pulled it back abruptly, and looked at the stranger and into his eyes instead. He reminded him of a predator studying his prey more than ever.

A part of him was, of course, cautious, but another part of him could not help but be envious and admire him.

Delroth had given him a choice – if it really was one. Victor considered the Immortal’s words for but one moment before he replied in an appropriately respectful, but far from servile tone, “I accept. Tell me what you need from me and where you want me to go.” The choice had been easy. If he stopped here, if he took the rubies and went home, he would be rich, but he would never find out more. He would never know what could have happened, and that was unacceptable.

Of course whatever mission the Immortal had for him was unlikely to be easy, but that was acceptable as well. Victor did not mind taking a risk every now and then. In fact those risks motivated him. He did not draw back as the Immortal suddenly moved towards him either, but simply looked directly at him instead, although his heart did beat a hint faster. If Delroth had wanted to kill him, he would already have done so. It was more likely that he wanted to intimidate him.

If that was the case, then it had worked – to some extent.

Crimson Sands

Just for a moment, the winds whipped and swirled around them and there was a sense of danger in those winds. After all, they were Delroth's to control. But then, Victor gave his answer and the Immortal smiled at the Assistant Researcher. It was a beautiful sight, the sight of his smile; as the two of them stood together on the crimson sand, in the now calm and gentle breeze, Delroth looked at Victor and gave a slight sigh.

"Tell you? Not how it works," the Immortal said and he looked at Victor, measuring him with his gaze. "This is a beginning, an opportunity," although the fact that the opportunity was for Victor was not said, it was obvious and explicit. After all, Delroth was the one offering graciously here, and there was no doubting it in his mind. However, there were some simple facts. "You are an explorer. Discoveries, unique things, wealth, you dedicate them to me." And who would not want to do so, after all. "Make me proud, bring me wonders."

There were wonders to be had here, and Victor was well placed to discover them, after all. To Delroth, it was like throwing a pebble in to a pond and watching the ripples. "And so, my new friend, we will build our relationship." He looked at Victor, and clarified further. "I am not interested in the mundane. I desire the glorious, the beautiful, unique and wonderful. That is what I want, and I wish you to bring me such." Gesturing around them, a smirk crossed Delroth's face. "Wherever it is from, bring me wonders and I will support you. I do not speak of such things in anything other than concrete terms."

He did have a specific task or two in mind, which he wanted Victor to perform, he said. The rewards would be glorious. But first? He continued, "I speak in entirely genuine words. What you bring to me, in my name, becomes mine. Sacrificed to me in glory and honour of my name. So, tell me. Of all that you own now, what will you give in offering that is worthy of my gaze upon you?"

That question required action, not just words and Delroth knew that it would separate out Victor from 'could have been blessed' or, perhaps, if it did not go well, it would make him part of that group. Offerings to Delroth were exactly that and must fit his very unique criteria. The Immortal stood and looked at Victor with a mostly bored, vaguely interested expression on his face.

“Of course not”, Victor replied as the Immortal informed him that that was not how it worked and met his gaze. He had thought that he would be given a task that was so challenging that he would reach his limits. He had thought that he would have to fight a thousand beasts with nothing but his bare hands, that he would have to face a thousand necromancers and the abominations that they had created and walk through a fire while being covered in easily flammable substances, but the task that Delroth had set for him seemed surprisingly doable to him. What the Immortal wanted from him was what he had done for the past couple of arcs, on a slightly larger scale. It would be … no, it would not be easy, he correct himself. It would be arrogant to assume that any task set by an Immortal was easy, and yet the explorer could not keep himself from smiling.

“I will bring you wonders”, he informed the Delroth. His eyes were ablaze as he spoke, and his voice was filled with excitement, as if he were already planning his next expedition. “I will search all of Idalos from the frozen wastelands in the far north where hardly anything draws breath to the jungles of Southern Idalos and from the highest mountains to the deepest oceans. I will bring you things that are so beautiful that they will take your breath away and make your heart beat faster. I will bring you gems that are the size of your hand or even your head. I will bring you magic, the unbelievable, the seemingly impossible, and it will all be yours!”

Delroth’s next words were somewhat unexpected, and Victor who had been so enthusiastic before fell silent. The wide smile that had been on his face before disappeared, and he looked thoughtful instead. The Immortal wanted something from him now. Most of what he had collected since he had arrived on Scalvoris the season before would probably impress a normal, mortal man or woman, but Delroth was an Immortal. He had been alive for centuries and experienced more than he could ever hope to.

A piece of gold or silver or the bone of a rare animal would not do. Such things were too conventional. Victor had never been one to give up easily though, but rather gladly accept a challenge and do what he could, and thus he considered all the things that were currently in his possession to find the one thing that might find the Immortal’s approval and keep him from ending things there and then.

Delroth wants an offering, but what shall I give him? That Dinili statue that I found in the graveyard in Almund on the trial that the dead came to life? It’s without a doubt a master sculptor’s work, and its eyes seem to be moving which I haven’t seen any other statue do which suggests that there is some sort of magic at work, but dinili aren’t particularly visually appealing, and Delroth is the Immortal of Vanity. The sight of a dinili might offend him. Maybe I should give him my treasure map. He probably likes treasure. But then again, who knows what kind of treasure the map leads to? Besides, he desires the glorious, the beautiful, the unique, and a map is none of that. He doesn’t want the mundane. He wants wonders! Ah yes … that should do it!

“This here”, Victor spoke and reached into his pack in a somewhat theatrical manner to heighten the anticipation. “Should catch your interest, my lord.” He removed a small book, bound in fine leather, and carefully handed it to the Immortal as if he were afraid of damaging it. “Before you insist that it is not worthy of you – it’s not just any book. It’s a book that writes back to you – a Book of Riddles and priceless beyond measure. Legend says that lost souls are placed within it and communicate with you when written to, on these pages. Very few such books exist in the world of Idalos. In fact, this is the first one of its kind that I have come across in all my travels.”

“It is”,
he added as he waited for the Immortal’s reaction. “Of course only the beginning, the first wonder of many that will be yours.”

Victor promised much, many things which he would bring to Delroth and the Immortal listened. It was like birdsong, those words, the whispering of the wind in its beauty and yet. ...

Yet he had heard it so many times before.

Delroth sighed at the thought of more gems, more mundanities. Did the mortal before him not realise that he was Delroth? He was beyond the mundane, above such things. Words, words, words... that was what he heard but he wanted now to see some action and so he demanded that something was given to him now. It was demanding, he understood that, but if this mortal was interesting enough to be of any use to him, then he would rise to the occasion.

And he offered him a book.

It would be fair to say that the Immortal did not look overly impressed. Possibly, even, just a tinge of boredom on that exquisite face. Still, Delroth considered himself a wonderful, generous and magnanimous Immortal who was as beneficent as he was beautiful and he would, he supposed, take into account the fact that he had put the mortal on the spot, in the moment. So he deigned to take the book, to look at it. In truth it was a little bit interesting, he supposed, and considering that the mortal had been put on the spot, it was quite an impressive little thing.

Delroth looked utterly unimpressed, but the book disappeared into the folds of his clothing. Then, he nodded and graced the little being in front of him with a smile. "Not bad, all things considered. We have a deal, but take care Victor."

The Immortal stood before Victor, but his voice was a whisper in the wind. "Lest a blessing become a curse, should you fail me." There was the sound of beating wings, Victor felt his hair moving in the breeze and then, a bird landed on his shoulder, which left a strange burning sensation where it touched just briefly. The feeling moved over both arms, as Delroth watched and smiled.

"Bring me offerings, prove your worth. Once I am convinced of your dedication, I will set you a task. I'll be watching." Just before he left, he remembered, or seem to, and asked, with a raised eyebrow, "Any questions?"

Words, words, words, but words often preceded action, and Victor already had a few things in mind that would most likely impress the Immortal that stood before him. He knew exactly where he would be able to find them, he just needed the necessary tools and a little time. That did not mean that the expression on Delroth’s face left him unaffected of course. Only a fool would not care that an Immortal was looking at them like that, and if there was anything that Victor Amielle definitely was not, then it was a fool.

In fact, he considered himself to be above average when it came to things such as intellect and wit.

He had not been aware that he had held his breath until the book disappeared into the folds of Delroth’s clothing. “I will”, he replied as the Immortal warned him to take care. “Of course.” He had no idea what being cursed by Delroth would be like, and he had no interest in finding out either, to be honest. It would, most likely, be fairly unpleasant and either involve him turning into a revolting monstrosity or birds trying to kill him at every turn.

If he had any say in that matter somebody else would receive Delroth’s curse!

All of a sudden he could hear the sound of beating wings. He felt his hair moving in the breeze, and then a bird suddenly landed on his shoulder. He turned his head in order to take a look at it, and his heart skipped a bit. It was a small falcon, just like the one that he had owned when he had been a boy, back in Lysoria, so many arcs before. “Shay”, he whispered her name and moved to touch the bird even though he of course knew that it was not really her. He had not known that he was capable of such fits of nostalgia until then.

After a while he noticed that there was a burning sensation where the bird had landed and found it strange. Stranger still was that the sensation seemed to spread over his arms. He resisted to urge to pull his sleeves back and take a look, but kept his gaze firmly trained on the Immortal. Delroth wanted to know if he had any questions, and he had admit that he had a few – it was not every trial that one met an Immortal after all, so this here presented a rare opportunity – but then he came to the conclusion that it would be a bad idea to ask any but the most vital ones, considering Delroth’s apparently somewhat volatile nature.

Saying “I don’t have any questions.” and leaving it at that would be anti-climactic after what had just happened though which was, of course, unacceptable. Victor also did not have any interest in standing there like a shy, overwhelmed little boy that had suddenly lost the ability to utter more than a couple of words at the same time – even though he had to admit that his head was spinning slightly, and there were all kinds of things going through his mind.

For that reason he replied, “I have none – at least none that need to be answered right now. Instead I want to make another promise – a promise that I intend to keep, unlike so many others in this world. I will not only bring you offerings, I will also eventually have a major shrine built for you on this island and fill it with gifts.”

That, he thought. Should appeal to a man as vain as him, especially since there are no shrines to Delroth that are worth mentioning on Scalvoris or Immortal’s Tongue. He is clearly somebody that enjoys being worshipped and admired. I have to admit, I would not mind eventually having a few admirers of my own, even though vanity is a vice … but then again, Delroth is the Immortal of Vanity, and I am apparently his now, so a little vanity is probably required!

At this level, the bird may be of any species of a Medium size, which is roughly 9-16 inches tall. The bird need not eat or sleep, but will often to mimic other birds to avoid suspicion. At this level, the Tarouz can communicate with the bird familiar through flashes of mental and emotional signals, which each interprets flawlessly. The bird can be used to scout, to offer a distraction in combat, or at this level, is mostly used for companionship.
Wings of Steel By using this ability, the Tarouz can grow organic steel feathers all along his or her arms, allowing them both a weapon and armor at a moment's notice. The feathers are as durable as steel, and offer resistance to piercing and bludgeoning damage. They are also razor sharp, though at this level, they must be wielded as melee weapons, as they can't be thrown from the Tarouz. The biggest drawback is that the feathers each weigh a moderate amount, slowing the Tarouz considerably unless well practiced with the ability.
The Charismatics Toolbox The Tarouz may add 3 skill points to any of the following skills: Appraisal, Cosmetology, Falconry, Flying, Persuasion or Seduction. These points may be used to surpass the 100 skill points of the skill chosen.
