Second trial of school

8th of Ymiden, 720th Arc
Early afternoon
Griseous Wing/Institute of Arcana

It seemed like every trial Viden turned into more and more of a drippy, melty, mud covered icicle. The increase in temperature at the beginning of the season was causing a lot of the top layer of the snow and ice that almost permanently covered Viden to melt. The change in weather brought with it a lot of sick people as well, especially among visitors who spent their first Ymiden in Viden. Tucked away deeply inside his cloak, Sin hiked up the slippery, muddy road leading to the Academy's main building. You'd think that for all their intelligence, the Eidisi would have thought to place their students' beds closer to their classrooms and library but apparently not. At this time of the trial, the city was quite busy, with lots of people all moving along the street, each one for their own business. Sin's business today was his first class on Graft, which he was actually looking forward to. He hoped it would live up to the reputation it had build up in his own head.

Unlike the outside, the Academy's main building was much quieter with most of the students either in classes or in the library. A few groups and individuals still occupied the large open space with several of them lining up in front of the Academy Registry. It would probably be like this for several trials to come but then again, it was the Academy's own fault for not having a set deadline for student sign ups each season. Inside the building, Sin was capable of releasing the tight grip he had on his cloak and simply let it flow around him. He immediately shivered as he did but he ignored it, simply toughening it out. The doors to the Prime Atheneum swung wide open, almost hitting him in the face as several Eidisi came streaming out. One of them bumped into Sin, who had expected the man to move aside instead, but got nothing but a quick glance in his direction as an apology. Once the group of students had passed through, Sin walked into the lower level of the library.

As soon as Sintih entered through the large double doors, his focus moved upward to the third floor balconies on the opposite side of the building. He felt the eyes of a few people on him for the few trills it took him to focus on the space just behind the balustrade and then he was there, preceded by a soft, musical chime announcing his arrival. It was an odd system the Academy had set up. On the one hand they forbade the teaching of magic in any sort of practical fashion but taught it theoretically at an incredibly high level while at the same time there were no rules allowing or forbidding the use or self-study of practical magic. Sin walked down an aisle, in between two seemingly endless shelves of books about magic and any other sort of knowledge the Academy deemed important or special. One set of double doors later, Sin stood in the Institute of Magic, waiting for his teacher to arrive.

Re: Second trial of school

It didn't always work out. Sintih glanced to his side where an Eidisi woman had taken a seat next to him. The Graft class was designed to seat an even number of students in pairs of two. For some reason, this cycle's Graft class was quite limited in number. Eight or nine of the tables in the room were occupied, each with two students sitting next to each other. Sin arranged his parchment and pencils on his side of the table, making sure he had half the table to himself by immediately leaning on it and spreading his elbows out more than was necessary. He didn't want the Eidisi to start bumping into him once the class started. The room was filled with the sound of people rummaging for their supplies and preparing for the start of the class. At the front of the room, an older Eidisi woman was busy opening up the blackboard, which had been folded up by the previous class. "I'm Lilea." The girl sitting next to him said as her hand slid into Sin's peripheral vision, held out for a handshake. Sin reached for his pencil and wrote down the date and name of the class at the top of his paper.

"I am professor Fahe." The professor spoke loud and clear for everyone to hear. From one of the tables came a surprised sounding whisper which drew the professor's attention. The whispering immediately stopped under her glare. "I will be your Graft professor for this Cycle." It seemed like that would be the extend of her introduction as she put up two large images on the blackboard, each on drawn on a large, rolled up scroll which promptly unrolled as soon as they were hooked up to the top of the blackboard. "Graft is the domain magic of change. It is known for healing and altering the bodies of living things." Sin scribbled down notes as he listened to the professor, only occasionally looking down to make sure he wasn't writing on the desk. "It allows for feats such as this." Professor Fahe tapped her wooden pointer on the image to her left. On the scroll was an imagine of a man in a circle, arms and legs stretched out to meet the edge of the circle. Except the man had four arms, pointing at ten, eleven, one and two as well as four legs, pointing at four, five, seven and eight. A pair of short wings came out from just above his hips, pointing towards three and nine and a tail with a sharp, arrow-like end pointed straight down to six. "And this." She tapped the scroll to her right, a detailed image of a man's torso with outstretched arm which, at the elbow, turned into a scaly Ithecal arm with sharp claws.

"Now, these are of course very ambitious examples but I always hope they draw everyone's attention on the first day." Professor Fahe set her pointer aside on the desk and flipped a page in the large book in front of her. "Graft comes to be because Graft mages are capable of altering, of bringing change to the bodies of their subjects, whether they are others or themselves. They do so by altering two things: Flesh and Energy." She picked up a chalk and wrote both words on one of the side boards she had opened up earlier. "Flesh are the physical parts of a body like its organs, skin, muscles, blood, roots or leaves. Except for a few exceptions, the Flesh is anything that makes up the physical body of anything. Plants, beasts and humanoids are all made up of Flesh according to Graft. Yes, to add to the confusion, flesh is a part of Flesh." Sin could hear the near constant scratching of pencils and quills on paper as the professor continued to speak.

Re: Second trial of school

"Energy, on the other hand, is a little different. It is invisible to all but a Graft magic user. This energy is present in all living things as it is the defining factor between living flesh and dead flesh. It is a most base force, a primal force, that allows you to think, move and feel. This energy simply is as it does not come from anywhere but the fact that something is alive. You all carry your energy with you, from the moment you are born until the moment you die." She tapped the word Energy on the board with her pointing stick. "It is through this energy that a Graft mage is capable of reaching into living things and altering them, for healing, change or..." The professor halted in her speech and looked over the group of students before her. "...hurt or kill. It is well within a Graft mage's power to use their abilities to bring forth endless suffering as well as recovery from the most heinous wounds."

The lesson continued with the professor continuing her talks about Flesh and Energy and how Graft mages could use both of these aspects to alter living things. Near the end of her three hour lecture, professor Fahe decided to leave her class with a little cliffhanger so they'd be back for her next lesson. "The only part of a living thing that is unable to be affected by a Graft mage is the Flesh that houses their sentience. But we'll get into that next time." Sintih quickly scribbled her lasts words on his parchment, forming multiple large circles around the world sentience, with a big question mark in the corner of it. He quickly put everything away in his backpack and got up to leave. Passing by the professor's desk on his way to the door, Sin quickly signed a thank you at her, which she responded to with a nod, before exiting the room. As a first impression, he thought to himself, the class on Graft was much more his style than the Rupturing one.

As he passed through the double doors back into the third floor of the library, Sin became aware of quick footsteps down the hall behind him. He turned to his left, towards the balconies that lined the edge of the third floor. He heard someone calling for attention and as he continued to walk he got the sense that someone was calking after him. He stepped up to the balustrade and looked down into the open space of the ground floor. There was someone rushing up behind him as he stepped from the third floor balcony down to the ground floor, a soft, melodious chime preceding his arrival. A few steps from him, an Eidisi turned to look at him with surprise on his face before the Eidisi's attention was drawn upward by a sharp scream. Looking upward, Sin could see someone leaning heavily over the balustrade he'd just disappeared from, grabbing onto for dear life. Some sort of joke, perhaps? The Yludih clicked his tongue at the dangerous behavior of the students and walked out the double doors leading back into the main hall of the Academy.

Comments: I like that you paid attention to the calendar and took a look at what the weather is like that day. I agree, that strange, unpleasant heatwave probably leads to a lot of sick people!

I also enjoyed your description of the class itself. You captured the atmosphere quite well in my opinion. The images that the professor used were … interesting. I wonder how that four-legged and four-armed man walked (and where he got his clothes from) though!

You can do a lot of crazy things with Graft though!

Sintih’s reaction to the person holding onto the balustrade for dear life was interesting. He just clicked his tongue at their dangerous behaviour and walked out of the door. That was great!

Enjoy your rewards!
