• Solo • Aftermath

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

Saun 2, Arc 720

Under normal circumstances, Victor would likely have enjoyed the ride through the Melrathi countryside that was so different from the area where he had grown up, to the village of Noatun. It had been a while since he had left the city where he lived – he had not gone very far since he had been released from Niflheim. As it was, his mood had been subdued throughout the two trials that his team and he had spent on the road though, and he had been unable to stop worrying.

A few trials earlier, a band of Lotharro raiders had attacked Noatun. They had arrived by land and by sea and brought along great beasts to aid them. Members of the Ragnari had been there and defended the village, but there had still been some damage; and furthermore, thunderstorms had wrecked the eastern coast. There had been several shipwrecks. Instead of helping the people that had been on those ships, people had begun to loot.

Sometimes, Victor could not help but wonder what had gotten into those people. He might have understood it if they had been starving, but not all of the looters had been poor. Some of them had just participated for the fun of it, because they were hoping to get their hands on something valuable. Thievery was illegal in Melrath, and he was pretty sure that looting a wrecked ship or taking whatever goods had been washed ashore was problematic as well.

“We are almost there”,
Hestia, a young Melrathi swordswoman with blonde hair that was part of the team that he led remarked. Her tone of voice had been a hint cool. His instant promotion to a Warlock of the Syns had caused mixed reactions among the Ragnari – ranging from admiration and cases of hero worship to outright disdain, challenges to his authority and refusals to address him with his correct title. Some, like Hestia, did their job (mostly because of the money and because they didn’t want to get in trouble with the higher-ups), but made it obvious that they didn’t like him very much.

That was fine with him though. He didn’t absolutely need his subordinates to like him. He was just here to do his job as well – which currently involved taking a look at Noatun in the aftermath of the Lotharro attacks, taking note where help was needed and eventually writing a report (a part of him was disappointed that he hadn’t been there during the attacks, but this here was important as well). And besides, if people saw how devoted he was to his new home, they might eventually change their mind and treat him less like some sort of intruder.

Re: Aftermath

Noatun was quite a bit smaller than he had expected, Victor noticed and furrowed his brow slightly as he rode into the village. It looked rather quaint, and for a moment the noble that had grown up in a large fortress and was used to more upscale surroundings, couldn’t help but feel out of his element. He had not had a lot of experience with such simple people so far. He had learned that most of the inhabitants were fishermen. He didn’t know anything about fishing. He had not gone fishing once in his life!

Most of the buildings considered of wooden longhouses made from sturdy logs and with thatched roofs, with a few huts where the less sociable inhabitants resided along the northern coast. The architecture was quite different from Raelia’s that reminded him of Ne’haer that he had visited quite frequently in his youth, before the conflict between Ne’haer and his native Lysoria had begun to escalate. The people themselves looked different as well. They wore simple tunics, for the most part, rather than the elegant robes that he was used to. Few, if any of them, wore bright colors or a bit of jewelry.

The streets weren’t paved, for the most part, which made him wonder what the place looked like after a heavy rain shower. He was glad that the weather was fairly pleasant at the moment, and that there was only a light breeze for the time being rather than a proper storm. He did not dwell on the state of Noatun’s streets too long though, but gave his horse the signal to turn left and move towards a building with a big sign above the door.

He was pretty sure that this was the local inn where his team and he would take up lodgings for the duration of their stay in Noatun. The sounds of people talking that he could hear due to one of the windows being open, perhaps in a slightly more subdued way than what would normally be the case (it had only been a few trials since the latest storm) confirmed his suspicions.

Victor was not entirely sure how the locals would receive them (and especially him, as he had not been given citizenship yet), but considering the fact that Ragnari had helped defend Noatun against the Lotharro raiders, he was relatively optimistic, everything considered.

Without them, a lot of lives would likely have been lost.

Once they had dismounted and taken their horses to the adjacent stable (or deactivated it, in Victor’s case – he rode a Stone Horse as such horses were easier to control than their normal counterparts), they entered the inn. It was, as he had expected, a bit on the quaint side, with rough-hewn wooden tables, benches and chairs, and a gigantic stone fireplace, but everything appeared to be clean, and it actually looked quite comfortable, with the furs and tapestries in muted colors on the walls which made him relax slightly.

Maybe it would be alright, after all.

The patrons turned to look their way when they walked in. One of them, an older human with dark hair and a weathered face muttered something about those feking outlanders (he had apparently noticed Victor’s lack of an embla) and how they couldn’t be trusted, but the man next to him, a little younger and with brown hair, nudged him, shook his head and reminded him of how the Ragnari had supported Noatun during the Lotharro attacks and that he might be dead without them.

This man was probably one of a handful of good outlanders. They wouldn’t let any random stranger join!

Victor smiled slightly at him, appreciating his comment (which the brown-haired man ignored, he was a little bit xenophobic himself), before he walked towards the bar in order to talk to the waitress that stood behind it, a human woman of approximately thirty arcs of age with rosy cheeks, blue eyes and two thick blonde braids. “Yes?” she asked, her Melrathi accent thick. “Are you the team that they promised would come?” she wanted to know.

“I didn’t know that foreigners were allowed to join the Ragnari, by the way”, she remarked and quickly added, “Personally, I don’t have a problem with foreigners. My mother is from Ne’haer herself. Not all of us in Noatun are narrow-minded and conservative.” She cast a disapproving glance at the dark-haired man with the weathered face as she said that. He pointedly ignored her and drank from the tankard in front of him.

“Citizenship is not a requirement, although I hope to get the opportunity to petition for citizenship and stop being a foreigner in the near future”, he replied smiling slightly once more. “And yes, we have been sent to assess the damage and see where help is needed, so, if there’s anything that you think requires particular attention, let me know please so that I can forward it to my superiors. And if there’s anything that I can do …”

He thought that it would be a good idea to offer his personal help as well, and not only because it might increase his standing with the people of Melrath and make it more likely for them to accept him, the foreigner. He really wished to do something for them and do his part in making sure that Noatun would become the place that it had once been again.

“I’m not sure if there’s anything that you can do right now, unless you are a builder or skilled in woodworking and know how to repair a boat”, the waitress admitted. “Just tell the people in Raelia that we would appreciate a bit of help. I hope that you don’t mind the food, by the way. The fishermen weren’t able to sail out for a while due to the storms and the Lotharro attacks, so it’s a bit on the plain side, I’m afraid.”

“I don’t mind”,
Victor assured her. “If you show us to our rooms so that we can put our things away, I’ll start to take a look right now so that you can get you the help that you need sooner. I’m Victor, by the way, Victor Amielle”, he added, feeling more confident than he had felt at first. Behind him, Hestia grumbled, as if she didn’t approve of anything that he had said, and the man with the weathered face still didn’t look particularly happy, but barring unforeseen circumstances, they should be back in Raelia before long and get those people the help that they needed.

In his opinion, it hadn’t been a bad start, everything considered.

Re: Aftermath

Victor knew very little about construction and similar trades, having grown up as a noble, and he was not as skilled an investigator as his acquaintance Balthazar Black who he had fought the mountain spirit in Scalvoris with, but he could see whether a building was damaged or not and whether a boat was in need of repairs after the storm as he had a pair of perfectly normally functioning eyes.

His mutations as well as the Gleam Sight, an ability that he had received after he had become a Warlock of the Syns had changed the way that he perceived the world and the people in it. Sometimes it was confusing and distracting and caused him a headache, but at other times, it was quite useful. And sometimes, the beauty that was everywhere around him now nearly took his breath away. He had never seen the world like that before.

There was little of that sense of wonder and confusion now.

He could still perceive things that you shouldn’t be able to perceive in the way that he perceived them – in a way, he could taste the hardness of the ground that he walked on - and he could still see sources of energy everywhere around him, but the effect seemed diminished – or maybe everything was affected by his worry and the fact that he still felt out of place, for more than one reason. Your mood could affect your perception.

His team and he decided to take a brief look around the village on the first trial of their stay in Noatun, make observations about the damage that had been caused and talk to some of its inhabitants (which garnered somewhat mixed reactions; not everyone was nice and friendly, especially when being faced with someone who was obviously not a native). They would continue their work the following morning as they had arrived rather late.

The room that Victor was staying in for the duration of his stay in Noatun was plain – it was about the size of his closet back in Lysoria – but it had a comfortable bed, a wardrobe and a small desk, and the meal, a mutton stew with a side of potatoes had not been anything special, but it had filled his stomach. It was actually more than he had expected considering recent events. He was here to work and provide help, and he could live without luxury for a while.

He was already a bit exhausted – it had been a long trial, and he was a bit sore from being on horseback for such a long amount of time – but after the aforementioned dinner, he sat down at the desk in order to open his notebook and work on the first part of his report regardless. He started with his team’s arrival in Noatun, with what kind of impression the village and its inhabitants had made on him and noted down the blonde waitress’ question about builders and woodworkers that could help repair the boats.

He had seen some of the aforementioned damaged boats on the pier – which had been affected as well – which was another thing that went into his report. Everything considered, he was positive that Noatun would easily be able to recover with some help from Raelia and the Ragnari.

Unfortunately, that would turn out to be a vain hope.

The second trial of Victor's stay in the village would lead to a rather unexpected reunion with an old companion that he had last seen more than a season prior. There would be a most concerning discovery, and eventually there would another catastrophe that would make the Lotharro attacks and the storms that had taken place towards the end of Ymiden seem like minor inconveniences in comparison.

Fortunately, he wasn’t aware of any of that yet.

As the evening went on, and he continued to work on his report, the Warlock almost felt a sense of calm and peace descend over him.

Everything would be alright.

Comments: This was an interesting prequel to The Storm thread. I didn't realize immediately that it would be occurring directly before then, until you reached the very conclusion of the thread. Then I got excited because I remembered Victor meeting Balthazar to confront the prophetess.

You played the disdain that some Melrathi had for Outlanders well, yet for the most part Noatun is a fairly accepting village, especially of any Ragnari, so it was well played overall that most of them were okay with his being there, even though he's not a citizen yet.

I wonder what lies in store for our heroes Victor and Balthazar in the next thread, I suppose we'll find otu soon enough!

Good job and enjoy the rewards!
