Saun 2, Arc 720
Under normal circumstances, Victor would likely have enjoyed the ride through the Melrathi countryside that was so different from the area where he had grown up, to the village of Noatun. It had been a while since he had left the city where he lived – he had not gone very far since he had been released from Niflheim. As it was, his mood had been subdued throughout the two trials that his team and he had spent on the road though, and he had been unable to stop worrying.
A few trials earlier, a band of Lotharro raiders had attacked Noatun. They had arrived by land and by sea and brought along great beasts to aid them. Members of the Ragnari had been there and defended the village, but there had still been some damage; and furthermore, thunderstorms had wrecked the eastern coast. There had been several shipwrecks. Instead of helping the people that had been on those ships, people had begun to loot.
Sometimes, Victor could not help but wonder what had gotten into those people. He might have understood it if they had been starving, but not all of the looters had been poor. Some of them had just participated for the fun of it, because they were hoping to get their hands on something valuable. Thievery was illegal in Melrath, and he was pretty sure that looting a wrecked ship or taking whatever goods had been washed ashore was problematic as well.
“We are almost there”, Hestia, a young Melrathi swordswoman with blonde hair that was part of the team that he led remarked. Her tone of voice had been a hint cool. His instant promotion to a Warlock of the Syns had caused mixed reactions among the Ragnari – ranging from admiration and cases of hero worship to outright disdain, challenges to his authority and refusals to address him with his correct title. Some, like Hestia, did their job (mostly because of the money and because they didn’t want to get in trouble with the higher-ups), but made it obvious that they didn’t like him very much.
That was fine with him though. He didn’t absolutely need his subordinates to like him. He was just here to do his job as well – which currently involved taking a look at Noatun in the aftermath of the Lotharro attacks, taking note where help was needed and eventually writing a report (a part of him was disappointed that he hadn’t been there during the attacks, but this here was important as well). And besides, if people saw how devoted he was to his new home, they might eventually change their mind and treat him less like some sort of intruder.
