The Guard House

Image
Saun 14, Arc 721

On the 14th of Saun, Devin Thorn, High Priest of Delroth, medical genius in progress and unexpected Baron (He’d just wanted Alyssia to have the job, but Saoire had given him one third of it!) left his very luxurious room with a spring in his step and a wide smile on his face because he was just so excited to finally see the newest addition to Smooglenuff Manor finished. From now on, there would not only be a wall around the manor; there would also be a guard house next to the gate, and the Barony would be even better protected against bandits and other unlawful elements, provided that such people existed on Faldrass.

Since this was a very special occasion, the young Mortalborn had decided to wear very special clothes. He had put his Duplicity Suit on – and made it look like a material that was not unlike black velvet and that shimmered slightly when the sunlight touchedt it. Underneath was a very fine and slightly frilly white silk shirt, and he wore black leather boots with a small heel that ended a little below his knees. Of course, he had also put shiny accessories in his hair and wore shiny rings, to match his very shiny and absolutely stylish outfit.

In his hands was a small box wrapped with green paper, with a bright yellow bow on it. It contained a gift because Marvin, the mouse Cadouri that oversaw the various building projects around the manor and the barony really deserved one for his great job in his opinion. He couldn’t wait to see the look on his face, and he had no doubt that he’d love it!

His walk took him down the stairs and into the entrance hall where he stopped for a moment in order to admire his surroundings. A couple of seasons had passed, and he still couldn’t believe his luck sometimes. He’d always, always wanted to be someone rich and famous, and now he was finally someone rich and famous, and it was absolutely awesome. He really loved his new home with its expensive marble floors, its stained-glass windows and crystal chandeliers, and all that beautiful and very luxurious furniture.

Of course, he decided, the best part about the manor was the purple roof. Purple was his favourite color!

He nodded at a maid that was just dusting off a vase before he opened the very large and imposing wooden entrance door and finally stepped outside, taking a deep breath as he did so. A moment later, he was already walking down the path to the gate that was framed by a lot of flowerbeds. He bent down in front of one of them in order to smell the flowers – they smelled very sweet and pleasant, he noticed – and then he walked on.

Finally, Devin reached the large cast-iron gate. He stopped there for a moment, raised a hand in order to shield his eyes against the bright Saun sunlight and took in his surroundings once more before he waved – he could already see Marvin. The brown mouse Cadouri was sitting on a simple wooden bench in front of the new guard house that looked just great and waiting for him. He couldn’t wait to talk to him and take a look inside!

Re: The Guard House

Devin had met Marvin and his sister Miranda for the first time the cycle before. Back then, they had been students at Saoire’s School, and they had accompanied Herman McGerman who had overseen the construction of Smooglenuff Manor itself. Now, they worked for him though – and for his fellow Barons, Darius and Nir’wei, of course, and he was so happy that they did so. He would never admit it out loud, but he really liked Cadouri because they were so cute and fluffy, and they were always so positive and curious about the world!

“For you, for all the great work you’ve done and will continue to do!” he told Marvin with the brightest smile that he was capable of and thrust the box at him. The Cadouri who was dressed in a fancy pale blue suit looked up for a moment, his brown eyes wide, and then he abruptly removed the bow, ripped the paper away and opened the box.

Marvin didn’t say anything at first – he was not a man of many words; you might in fact wonder if he was mute if you didn’t know him – but he smiled all over his face as he held up the two long sausages – made of venison, with plenty of spices – the freshly baked rolls, the bacon and the two small bags that were filled with chocolate chip cookies (with white and black chocolate) and orange and lemon cookies. Finally, he popped an orange cookie into his mouth.

“Thank you, my lord”, he finally said, remembering his manners, set the box down on the bench next to him and bowed deeply and respectfully. “I love food”, he continued, stating the obvious – Marvin ate a lot, as much as some humans – before he wanted to know, “Shall I give you a tour now? I made sure that the walls and the windows are especially sturdy and that you can see if someone approaches from every direction”, he told Devin.

“What do you think about the roof, by the way, my lord?” he wanted to know a moment later – while he had been his usual quiet self before, he just couldn’t seem to stop talking now. “I think I managed to make it exactly the same color as the roof of the manor itself”, he proclaimed with an incredibly proud look on his face, and his whiskers twitching slightly.

Devin raised his head and looked at the roof of the guard house that had two floors (although the walls weren’t quite as high as the walls of the manor itself). A moment later, his eyes lit up. As far as he was concerned, the color was exactly the same tasteful and utterly awesome shade of purple, and it was just …

“Perfect!” he exclaimed and clapped his hands before he grinned and told Marvin, “Let’s go in!”

Re: The Guard House

Image
The guard house of Smooglenuff Manor was smaller than the guard house that you might find at a city gate, of course, but as Devin stepped across the threshold, he decided that his guard house was much better looking. The walls were made of the same grey stone as Smooglenuff Manor itself. The ground floor was furnished with benches, a table, shelves, an arms rack, a fireplace (because it could get quite cold in winter) and a stove so that the guards could make tea and such when they were taking a break.

And then there was …

“What’s that?” Devin asked and held up what looked like some sort of bucket made of leather, a slightly confused expression on his face. “Why are all those buckets here? They are not for …” he continued, trying not to look too horrified. The guards of Smooglenuff Manor would not do their business in some sort of bucket that wasn’t even made of wood, thank you very much! That would be demeaning! They deserved lots of amenities!

“For firefighting, so that the guards can act quickly in case of an emergency. I read up on guard houses beforehand and learned that guards often also take care of firefighting duties”, Marvin explained before he gestured for Devin to follow him up to the stairs. Devin did so with quite an excited look on his face.

He’d given the young engineer pretty much free reign when it came to building the guard house and acquiring the proper furnishings – because he knew absolutely nothing about guard houses, among other things - and he was quite pleased with how thorough he was. He would, he decided, surprise him with another box of food very soon!

“Here we have beds for the guards, so that those that are taking a break from work can rest a bit”, Marvin explained and gestured at a couple of wooden platform beds. “The windows all have shutters, and this hatch here”, he continued and pointed at the ceiling. “Opens onto the roof. There is a flat section on the roof where you can stand”, he proudly added.

“So that the guards can fire arrows if someone attacks?” Devin asked, his eyes shimmering brightly. He hoped that nobody would ever attack Smooglenuff Manor – he wasn’t even sure where the attackers in question were supposed to come from; this was Faldrass and not that place where the Lotharro lived – but he liked the idea in general. Firing arrows at your enemies from the roof sounded like a great combat strategy to him!

“Or to watch people that approach the manor”, Marvin said and shrugged his shoulders.

Devin nodded before he abruptly walked over to one of the beds and plopped down on it in order to test if it was comfortable enough. It was quite nice - although his own bed was even nicer, of course. His own bed was surrounded by velvet curtains and contained more pillows than you could count!

It was just as he was wondering whether he should climb through the hatch that something occurred to him. The buckets were not there for the guards to do their business in.

Where did they …

“You didn’t forget to add a toilet, did you?” he asked.

“The guardhouse has the appropriate facilities”, Marvin explained and wanted to know, “Would you like to take a look?”

“No, thanks, that won’t be necessary”,
Devin quickly replied and suppressed the urge to make a face and look disgusted before he decided to climb up the narrow staircase to the roof anyway, open the hatch and take a brief look at the sky – and the landscape that surrounded Smooglenuff Manor.

A moment later, he closed the hatch and joined Marvin once more, smiling even more than he had smiled in the beginning, if that was at all possible because he was having so much fun.

The Barony was getting better and better. It had a road that was actually two roads now, he had hired Vega to make benches for him, he had made lots of contacts, and now there was this beautiful guard house where the guards could stay and make sure that the manor was well protected.

And soon, he’d have a party at the manor, too!

“You’ve done a really great job, Marvin, an awesome job in fact!” he gushed, and the Cadouri who beamed at him. “Let’s go outside again though, shall we?” he continued which Marvin agreed to immediately. Soon, both of them were sitting on the bench in front of the guardhouse, and Marvin was eating more of his cookies – and even handed Devin one of them. The young Baron tried to start another conversation with the Cadouri because he really liked him – but Marvin who had been absolutely talkative for a while was quiet again.

He had exhausted his supply of words for the trial!
Bought
2 large rooms. I’ve used the 20% discount mentioned here which reduces the price from 16 WP to 13 WP (well, 12,8 WP). The guardhouse and its furnishings are Tier 10 seeing as Smooglenuff Manor is Tier 10 as well.

Notes: You would think touring a new addition to a house would make for a slightly uneventful thread, but you really always find a way to bring out the excitement with Devin. He's so ebullient and enthusiastic, it's hard not to share that sense with him as he explores the newest guard house for the manor.

Marvin seems like a very useful character to have on retainer, perhaps he can be persuaded to work for the Barony again, or even as a permanent architect/superintendent for the manor! Just a thought.

I found the situation with the leather buckets and the idea of guards doing their 'business' in them an amusing misconception on Devin's part. Of course Marvin being an engineer would ensure they had appropriate facilities for their very demanding job of guarding the manor at all times. It's important to keep those guards happy, and I doubt anyone of them would be satisfied with a leather chamberpot held in the same area.

I like that Devin gave a present to Marvin as sort of payment, in the form of breakfast and food. That was nice of him!

Great writing!
