Magic Mentors

What is the Mage Mentor NPC?:

For mages, the relationship between student and master is often one that is vitally important. Mages do not randomly initiate due to the limited number of students they can bring into Domain and given the low success rate and the dangers of such a practice, each student is appraised for some time before an initiator chooses them.

To be initiated by an NPC, a mage PC is now required to create a single NPC to serve as their initiator and to control in threads related to magic progression. These NPC’s are special in that they are not PB NPC’s that are fully owned by the PC who created them. As the level of power in these mages is usually fairly high, they will be treated as site NPC’s for moderator plots after creation. Consideration WILL be given to the PC who made them before the NPC might be used in a plot, but control of their fates will generally fall to the mods if that NPC would cross into a larger site plot.

A Magic Initiator must be requested in the PSF and only one per PC may be requested. The application is stipulated below. Use of these NPC’s are to be for character progression in magic. Should that player want them to feature in a personal plot, they will need to alert their city Storyteller or the approver of their PSF ticket with a short summary of what their role might be. Depending on the severity of the intervention, a moderator will either take on this role themselves or approve it for the storyline in question.

A magic mentor is the only time in which a PC can self initiate in a thread and can only be initiated in a magic the mentor holds.

A Magic Mentor NPC cannot increase their skill level under normal circumstances. However, with permission from your City mod or in PSF, alterations and advancements to skills for the NPC can be requested should the narrative need arise.

Mentor NPC Application

Please provide the following information in the PSF:

  • Name:
  • Age:
  • Race:
  • Organization (if any):
  • Skills:
    • Domain Magic 1 (Up to 76),
    • Domain Magic 2 (Up to 51)
    • Domain magic 3 (Up to 25).
    • Non magic skill (Up to 51),
    • Non magic Skill (Up to 30),
    • Non Magic Skill (Up to 25)
A Player has a pool of 250 exp to create their Mentor NPC. Please note that, whilst unreleased magics are permitted, due to the restriction of one Mage Mentor NPC per PC, they can not be used until release under any circumstances.
  • Bio: In the Bio, please answer three important questions. Who is this mage? What weight of impact do they have on the world or their organization? And finally, Why is this mage seeking a student?
  • Appearance: Can be written or picture
  • Relationship: This last area is for you to prove you understand the nature of a Mentor PC. Although it does not have to be exhaustive, we are looking for the nature of the relationship that your PC will establish with their Mentor. Magic is not the story of a random old man who initiated you and vanished forever, it is the story of a relationship with a mysterious and immense power...and the person who felt that you, out of all others, deserved this chance to be a mage.

But what about my existing NPC who has magic?

Any existing NPCs with Domain Magic will be converted to Mage Mentor NPCs. Please either PSF or speak to your local Prophet who will update your PNs.

A Note on Faction & Business NPCs

If it makes sense for a faction or business to have magic-using NPCs, the rule is simple. Faction or Business NPC Mages must get signed off by the local mod before being approved in the business / faction and before any use of magic. Usually these NPC's won't become mage mentors, although it is possible with Storyteller permission. This means that it is possible to have mages in a faction or business, but they are overseen by the local prophet and can not be used as personal NPCs.
