Lucia is a Newblood in the Skadiri. As such, she has been undergoing test after test after test. It seems the tests may never end and whether she is passing them all, or merely skirting by, it seems impossible to figure out. During one of the nights that Lucia drinks a bit too much, she is kidnapped with a hood over her head. She wakes up in a dark, damp location, tied to a chair, with water continually dripping on her head. A Shadowwalker Skadiri appears and starts to ask her questions about her father, her magic, and her intentions within the Skadiri's branch. Why didn't she join the Syns? What does she hope to accomplish? What are her deepest fears? Her noblest aims?

Many questions are asked, and all the while, the water drips on Lucia's head. Does she answer the Shadowwalker and hope for mercy? Does she attempt an escape in the moments when the Shadowwalker appears to turn away? Is this yet another test or is it something else? Will she discover the Shadowwalker is considering making her their mentee? Or will Lucia crack under the pressure?
