Mortalborn story: In many ways, in fact almost entirely, Padraig's birth was a twist of fate. When she found out that she was pregnant, Etta went to the local healer. The young woman couldn't begin to guess who the father was, and had no wish or need to bring a child into the world. She had every intention of asking for the pregnancy to be ended. But it was not to be. The healer came into the room where the young prostitute was, and took Etta into his consulting room. Without either doctor or patient realizing it, they weren't alone. Sharing the room with them, was the ghost of a woman who had, some trials previously, died in childbirth. She held the soul of her would-have-been newborn child. Famula was there, offering the second chance, as she often does; the ghost had refused Vri and now did the same with the lantern-bearer. She would not consign her son to the afterlife. She screamed in hysterics and Famula sighed.

Sometimes, the Immortal of Resurrection knew, things happened, but then seemed to fall into place. Holding out her hands to the ghostly mother, she took the soul of the baby from her. It was already Empty, but the mother would never cross over and so, Famula made a decision. Putting her own essence into the soul, she turned and placed it into Etta Augustin and the beginning of a soul she carried changed. As the healer spoke softly with Etta, Famula watched and listened. This boy would be born, the Doctor said. He wasn't sure why he said it, and he would serve, the doctor added. Of that, he was sure, as it was in his very blood. Etta was immature and unable to manage. But she took the Doctor's words to heart and when he said that she should give the boy to her father to raise, Etta nodded and agreed.

Unaware that the child she now carried had the essence of Famula herself, Etta was equally oblivious to the moving on of the ghostly mother, able to pass on to an afterlife which she felt she had saved her son from. And as for the Immortal of Souls, Famula looked on as the human woman walked out and she smiled a brief, almost cold, smile. Because he would serve. In ways he would never dream of.

Soul Shift As a son of Famula Padraig is able to become a ghost at will. Once every ten-trial, he is able to concentrate and make himself a ghost. While in this form, he is for all intents and purposes exactly that, therefore, most people will be unable to see him. He is able to learn Ghostly skills, but only during the time that he is in this form. He cannot use those skills in his usual physical form, until such a time as he reaches the level identified in the skill as necessary for those who have returned from the dead. He cannot remain as a ghost for more than a trial.

World Walker

Padraig is an explorer, a scientist and with this ability, he becomes a World Walker. As a Ghost, he can develop the ability to traverse worlds, and as such, there are no barriers, of sorts, which will stop him. This power does not allow him to walk through a wall, or to ignore a felled tree in front of a carriage. However, what he can do with this is to step into the Beneath, into Emea; this is the ability to step through barriers from one world to another. To activate this ability, Padraig has to draw a door in his own blood on a flat surface. This then becomes a door and he is able to step through it. He can take one other person with him, but no more than that and he can use this ability no more than once a season.

Attention to Detail Meticulous details are the remit of the scientist and, in order to fully investigate things, each detail is important. Padraig is able to look at a phenomena or item and he can both intuitively see, and perfectly recall, the details of it. Should he look at an example of poison, for example, he will be able to identify the component parts, and will know who the poison will work on and who, if anyone, it will not. Limits, composition, and duration are all visible to him with five bits of concentrated effort. He will not automatically know how to overcome or change the object of his focus (so, he won't know the antidote to the poison, or even the name of it) but the knowledge gained will save him hours of work and experimentation. It gives him the "what", allowing him to focus on the "how" and the "why"
