General Information

Quick Facts:

Highly Aggressive predator, excellent hunter, fur has a chameleon effect.

Height: 10 ft when standing Weight: 900 lbs Location: Found living wild in the Melrathi Mountains. It has been known to travel farther south in search of prey.

Appearance:

The Grendel is fairly similar to a bear but uglier. It can move on all four or only on two legs. It is covered with a short fur that color shifts to reflect something similar to its back ground. The creature is much skinnier then a real bear. It appears like it hasn’t eaten well, with loose skin. It’s back paws are much larger than its front paws, but the smaller size gives the Grendel better control of its paw movement, though it doesn’t have the dexterity humanoid races.

The Grendel has a skeletal type face, and large canines that add to its general ugliness. The face appears as a cross between a bear and a humans. Its eyes are a sickly green, and seemed to have a wild and frenzied look. When out hunting they make shrill screams that can unnerve a listener.

Habitat:

Found within mountains, they prefer high slopes to live on, but will wander farther south to go hunting. Females will rarely wander into a village, although males may do so if there are a large number of them in an area. Though this is normally done solely out of hunger and desperation.

Lifespan and Development:

Gestation takes about a cycle an half. Grendel are born as a brood, left alone in the back cave of their mother’s home. They are left to find their way to the main cave where the one that survive their early trials will be raised by their mother for an arc before they are forced out of the cave. Female Grendels can live up to 4 decades before dying of old age. Males very rarely die of old age. They are either killed when they ravage an area by other creatures, or are killed after mating.

Diet:

Grendel usually eat plant life that grows around them most of the Arc, but they all get a craving for meet once an arc. That is when they will wander out of their mountains looking for a lot of meat. It is at this time that the Grendel and Sleipnir will cross paths, a couple of these horses will satisfy these creatures and they will return home, if they have to eat smaller creatures there kill count goes up until they are satisfied.

Female Grendels rarely leave the mountains, they usually mate at this time and eat the males.

Temperament:

The Grendel is normally lazy and apathetic. It just wanders around its cave snacking on food and sleeping it off. If another Grendel of the same sex enters its territory it will become provoked and attack until the invader leaves or the Grendel who owns the territory dies.

During their feeding frenzy they are aggressive and sly. This is the monster of stories.

Uses:

The Furs are used for cloaks when found especially by people who travel the wilds, as it retains some of its chameleon ability.

These animals are considered impossible to tame.
